New England Wikimedians in January of 2014

Wikipedians from Boston and the surrounding area meet most months, typically in casual get-togethers over food, to talk about all things Wikipedia and beyond. Occasionally, we also gather for special events, like talks from distinguished speakers, edit-a-thons, photo scavenger hunts, and collaborations with local cultural institutions. These meetups are open to everyone. For thoughts about the future of the group, including plans for major future events, see the New England Wikimedians website.

Please sign up for an upcoming event, add a future event, fill out details, link to pictures, and add mugshots of attendees who got nabbed! Connect with other local Wikipedians, or stop by and find out what Wikipedia is about! The Boston Wikipedia group has met since at least 2004, and as of June 2012 has recorded over 71 gatherings.

Events are also discussed on the Boston Wikipedia group mailing list. And since it's a great way to attract people who are interested in Wikipedia but might not find us otherwise, check out our page at our page for more.

January, 2014[edit]

Wikipedia Day celebration at MIT (Full invitation and details at our Meetup page):

2013 was a banner year for the New England Wikimedians, which has, as of December 30th, officially become a Wikipedia User Group!

Come and celebrate our successes in 2013 and help us plan future events for the year ahead. Organizers of the many edit-a-thons, hackathons, and other Wikipedia events held in New England this past year will be on hand to re-cap their experiences. We will take a quick look at some larger Wikimedia initiatives and discuss how we might participate as a distinct user group. We will ask for input on and volunteers for a tentative list of events and meetings during the 2014 calendar year. Finally, we will update everyone on our goal of creating an official Wikimedia chapter in late 2014.

There will be food and drink! There will be music! Let's get this year started off right. We highly encourage new editors or those who may never have attended one of our events to come to this meeting. Among other things, we will discuss how to incorporate those of us outside of the immediate Boston Metro area into regular New England Wikimedian plans and efforts.

Our group did a lot to plan for and host Wikimania 2006. (For more on Wikimania see the public site, Wikimania 2006 wiki, planning info, the at-large discussion list, and the local list.)
