Welcome to WikiProject Persondata. Some Wikipedians have formed this collaboration resource and group dedicated to improving Wikipedia's use of Persondata, a hidden template used to store biographical information as metadata. This page and its subpages contain their suggestions and various resources; it is hoped that this project will help to focus the efforts of other Wikipedians interested in the topic. If you would like to help, please join the project, inquire on the talk page and see the to-do list below.

What is Persondata?[edit]

One of the first things you may think about when stumbling across this page is 'What is Persondata?' Well, you can see Wikipedia:Persondata for in-depth explanations, but Persondata is basically metadata which is added to the bottom of biographical articles. It is potentially useful for Wikipedia maintenance and the possibility of a Wikipedia comprehensive CD-ROM. As of July 2014, the English Wikipedia has over 1,157,000 articles with Persondata (see User:Rajah/persondata for past counts of Persondata).

Important: By default, Persondata is invisible to normal users. To make Persondata permanently visible, you must tinker with your account settings:

  1. Go to Special:Mypage/skin.css (this will bring up the custom CSS page for whichever skin you are using.)
  2. Copy-paste the following into your skin.css: table.persondata {display:table !important;}. If you are using Internet Explorer 7 or earlier, copy and paste this variation instead: table.persondata {display:block;}.
  3. Save the page and bypass your browser's cache. This can be achieved in Internet Explorer by pressing Ctrl+F5.

Uses of Persondata[edit]

Wikidata is a metadata system still in development. Eventually, information from Persondata will be moved to Wikidata, and Persondata may become obsolete. However, for now, users may still add and maintain Persondata. Users are encouraged to get involved with the wikidata project. This includes creating and maintaining wikidata for individual pages, as well as working on the mechanics of Wikidata itself.

1 September 2014: An RfC about the removal of Persondata was concluded with this outcome:

At this time, there is no consensus to remove persondata, due to the uses of it for various tools. However, there does seem to be a consensus for revisiting this in the future, when most or all of it has been migrated to WikiData. --Mdann52talk to me! 08:17, 1 September 2014 (UTC)

1 August 2011: Many persondata templates do not have names or descriptions. These are now tracked at Category:Persondata templates without name parameter and Category:Persondata templates without short description parameter.

18 December 2007: A list of biographies has been constructed, and can be found at /List of biographies. Be aware that this list includes articles which already have persondata, and also biographical articles about groups of people (e.g. bands) which should not be given persondata.

This project covers every biography on Wikipedia.

The persondata template should be appended to each article between the end of the main body and the start of the categories (or, if present, before the DEFAULTSORT template). The template fields should be filled in where they apply. Where they do not, the field should be left blank, but not deleted. For example, in the case of a living person:

| NAME = Smillie, Carol
| SHORT DESCRIPTION = Scottish television presenter
| DATE OF BIRTH = 23 December 1961
| PLACE OF BIRTH = [[Glasgow]], [[Scotland]]
| DATE OF DEATH =

The name entries take the form Surname, Forename(s), Title. If more than one name is being listed (in the ALTERNATIVE NAMES field) they should be separated by a semi-colon. The wikilinks in the fields are not mandatory, but may perform a useful purpose in the future. Lengthy piped links should be avoided.

Do not use templates in the date fields, as they can interfere with data extraction. Joe Schmoo's birthday, for example, should be listed as December 29, 1848 and not as {{birth date|1848|12|29|mf=y}}.

Types of articles where Persondata should NOT be used:

  • Music groups
  • Non human subjects (e.g animals or fictional characters)
  • Companies
  • User pages

In the case of dual biography articles where individual articles for the people are not available (e.g. Leopold and Loeb), either create two copies of Persondata or leave out Persondata altogether (please consult relevant talk page archives).
