Handwara-Jammu And Kashmir Handwara-Jammu And Kashmir is located at 34.40°N 74.28°E . It has an average elevation of 1,582 metres (5,190 feet) above sea level. Handwara is a town of Distt Kupwara of Indian administered Kashmir. It is situated in the North Kashmir. It has a Municipal Committee representing 13 wards. It has its own Tehsil office, ADC office, PWD(R&B) Deptt. and a police station. An additional Sessions court has been sanctioned for Handwara, but it is yet to function. Handwara is an electoral constituency of Distt Kupwara located in the extreme north of Jammu and Kashmir. It comprises the main town consisting of 13 Municipal Wards and various other blocks. The main Blocks are the Magam, Rajwar, and Ramhal block. The thirteen Wards of Handwara Municipal Committee include Durashpora, Herpora, Banday Mohalla, Zargar Mohalla, Khanbal A, Khanbal B, Bagatpora, Kachiwara,Gonipora, Braripora A, Braripora B and Chootipora.
'Banday', 'Sofi' are considered to be the most
renowned families of Handwara. The current MLA of Handwara is Sajjad Gani Lone (jkpc) who won against Chaudhary Ramzan(jknc) by a margin of more than 5000 votes in 2014 assembly elections. Sajjad Lone has an extensive support of Banday Mohallah, Magam, Ramhal, Villgam and Kandi areas. The Handwara is having a good education facilities as it has a Govt. degree college, Govt.boys high secondary school and 'Govt.girls high secondary school. Also Handwara has near about 45 private schools. Some of famous private schools are Kehkashan High School Handwara owned by B.A Khan, Monarch p/s handwara, AAIMS p/s owned by Suliman Mir handwara and others. Handwara is also known for its talent in cricket, Volley ball, foot ball and at present there are two major cricket clubs operating viz Handwara Sports Cricket Club & Star Eleven Cricket Club.
