On this WP:WSS subpage, you can propose new stub types (please read the procedures beforehand!), as well as the reorganization and subdivision of existing stub types. You can also discuss anything else related to stubs on the talk page.

Proposing new stub types – procedure[edit]

Important: If you wish to propose the creation of a stub ARTICLE you've come to the wrong place. If you don't have a username yourself, please go to WP:AFC for proposing a new article. If you already have a username, you can create the article yourself. If you don't know how, add {{Helpme}} to your user talk page to request help from other editors. This page only deals with stub TEMPLATES and CATEGORIES; we cannot help you with creating articles.

Proposing new stub types
If you wish to propose a new stub category and template, please follow these procedures:
  1. Check the List of stub types or under Category:Stub categories to make sure that your proposed new stub does not already exist.
  2. List it at the top of the current month's section, under a header, like the ones shown (if any). Sign it with a datestamp (~~~~).
    • Please bear in mind that a stub category isn't about the importance or notability of the topic!
  3. Find a good number[1] of stub articles, as many as you can, that will fit that template. You may use this tool to scan through categories, or this one in more complicated cases; tagged stubs are always 2 levels down in Category:Stub categories and transclude {{asbox}}. Each of these articles can be:
    • currently marked with {{stub}};
    • currently marked with another type of stub tag (in which case you should justify why your tag is better for the article than the current one);
    • a stub whose categorisation is highly ambiguous or questionable;
    • not marked as a stub.
  4. If you use any category scan (from the tool mentioned above or from any other), please link to it so that other users can confirm that the results are still accurate.
  5. Others may do the same, if they so desire.
  6. 5 days after listing it here, if there is general approval or no objection, go ahead and create the new category and/or template following the format on Wikipedia:Stub. List the new stub type on the stub types list in an appropriate section. If consensus is not clear, or discussion is still ongoing, the proposal will remain open until consensus can be reached.
  7. If you wish to propose a stub type which does not currently have 60 articles that could use it, you may propose an upmerged template in a similar way. An upmerged template would feed into currently existing stub categories until such time that there are enough stubs for a separate stub category. At that point a category for it may be separately proposed.

DO NOT place a proposal here for any stub type which has already been created and is being discussed at Wikipedia:Categories for discussion. The proposal page is only for stub types that have not yet been created, and it is better to keep any discussion of such stub types in one place rather than splitting it between different pages. Wikipedia:Categories for discussion is the correct page for proposals to delete a stub type.

^ . Good number means about 60 articles or more, or 30 or more if it is the primary stub type of a WikiProject, though this figure may vary from case to case.

"Speedy creation"[edit]

A stub type may be proposed for "speedy creation" if it meets one of the following criteria:

  • S1 - the creation of a category for which an approved upmerged template already exists and is now in use on more than 60 articles.
  • S2 - the creation of an upmerged national-level template for a subject in which other such national-level templates currently exist (e.g., X-bio-stub, X-hist-stub, or X-geo-stub, where X is the name of an internationally widely recognised country) or other instances where a clearly established pattern of similar subtypes exists. The proposed topic may not be controversial in scope. Many templates qualifying for S2 are listed at Wikipedia:WikiProject Stub sorting/To do/To create.

List speedy creation proposals in the same proposal listings as normal stub proposals below.

Proposals, January 2015[edit]

Please check how many articles qualify for a stub type before proposing it.

Split of Category:Ennominae stubs[edit]

Split off some of the larger tribes:

Dawynn (talk) 11:45, 27 January 2015 (UTC)

Split of Category:Tachinidae stubs[edit]

Propose {{Tachina-stub}} / Category:Tachina stubs. Should pull some 80 articles out of Category:Tachinidae stubs. Dawynn (talk) 12:56, 26 January 2015 (UTC)

Category:Pennsylvania election stubs[edit]

Propose creating {{Pennsylvania-election-stub}} / Category:Pennsylvania election stubs. Between Pennsylvania and Pittsburgh, should have more than 75 pages. This will bring Category:United States election stubs back under 800. Dawynn (talk) 12:54, 26 January 2015 (UTC)

Split of Category:Peru geography stubs[edit]

Propose the following as speedy splits:

Dawynn (talk) 12:17, 25 January 2015 (UTC)

Split of Category:Lithosiinae stubs[edit]

Propose the following to help reduce the size of Category:Lithosiinae stubs

Dawynn (talk) 12:12, 25 January 2015 (UTC)

Category:Miaenia stubs[edit]

Propose Category:Miaenia stubs / {{Miaenia-stub}} to be split from Category:Acanthocinini stubs. Will pick up about 80 pages, and bring the parent back under 800. Dawynn (talk) 12:07, 25 January 2015 (UTC)

Split of Category:Siluriformes stubs[edit]

Propose the following new templates and categories.

Dawynn (talk) 12:03, 25 January 2015 (UTC)

Category:Kentucky Derby stubs[edit]

I propose creating Category:Kentucky Derby stubs/{{KentuckyDerby-stub}}, as a subcat of Category:Horse race stubs, Category:Kentucky sport stubs and Category:Louisville, Kentucky stubs (although the last 2 may be replaced by Category:Louisville, Kentucky sport stubs) - a quick scan finds 91 stubs here. עוד מישהו Od Mishehu 09:14, 20 January 2015 (UTC)

Basically no objection. Creating something like Category:Louisville, Kentucky sport stubs/{{Louisville-sport-stub}} was on my to-do list anyway. It just seems to me that both that and Category:Kentucky Derby stubs/{{KentuckyDerby-stub}} would end up on this set of stubs, although certainly both {{Kentucky-sport-stub}} and {{Louisville-stub}} would be removed in the sorting. Stevie is the man! TalkWork 10:15, 20 January 2015 (UTC)
I have been working on US state sport stub types (see many of my recent Category: and Template: namespace edits, as well as my AWB's account's recent edits); and I've proposed per-city types below, which Category:Louisville, Kentucky sport stubs would be included in. עוד מישהו Od Mishehu 11:42, 20 January 2015 (UTC)

Category:New York City sport stubs[edit]

Category:New York sport stubs is getting close to 400 stubs (and may pass it before I'm done populating it); the clearest viable subcat would be Category:New York City sport stubs/{{NYC-sport-stub}}, which is getting close to 200]. עוד מישהו Od Mishehu 17:41, 14 January 2015 (UTC)

ANd while we're at it, any other city with a city-level stub category and enough sports stubs to justify a category. עוד מישהו Od Mishehu 05:56, 20 January 2015 (UTC)

1910s film stubs[edit]

I propose creating two new tags: {{1910s-short-comedy-film-stub}} and {{1910s-short-drama-film-stub}}, along with the corresponding categories. A quick catscan shows that there are about 286 articles included in both Category:1910s comedy film stubs and Category:Short silent comedy film stubs, plus 220 articles that are included in both Category:1910s drama film stubs and Category:Short silent drama film stubs. Since the decade categories are overpopulated, the new stub tags would allow the articles to still be tagged as short films and by decade, but with only one stub tag. Please see the discussion here. Rename {{Paralympics-stub}}[edit]

Given that the medalists are at {{Paralympic-medalist-stub}} and all the Olympics categories use {{Olympic-stub}} Before I complete my earlier proposal on splitting this I propse we rename this {{Paralympic-stub}} and then the proposal below follows suit. Just incase anyone hasn't followed I am proposing going from plural to singular. If there is somewhere else that this should be posted please let me know.Waacstats (talk) 00:58, 29 December 2014 (UTC)

Another speedy[edit]

Category:Austrian football biography stubs[edit]

Split Category:Dutch sportspeople stubs[edit]

Split of Category:Russian football midfielder, 1990s births stubs[edit]

Category:Paralympics stubs[edit]

Categrory is large so I would like to prose a split similar to the Olympics stubs so we would have a separate category for Category:Winter Paralympics stubs populated by {{Winter-Paralympics-stub}} and {{2014-winter-Paralympics-stub}}, {{2010-winter-Paralympics-stub}} etc with categories along the lines of Category:2014 Winter Paralympics stubs for any template that reaches 60. Also Template:2012-Paralympics-stub, Template:2008-Paralympics-stub etc with similar matching categories along the lines of Category:2012 Paralympics stubs for any that reach 60. Split of Category:Japanese football defender stubs[edit]

Category:Flea stubs[edit]

More splits for Category:Cerambycinae stubs[edit]

Looks like the following are at least worthy of an upmerged template. The numbers are the articles in the permanent category. Expecting the majority to also qualify as stubs.

Dawynn (talk) 11:31, 5 December 2014 (UTC)

Yes -- I had started tagging with the Tillomorphini template before I realized it doesn't exist. For now, this exists as a redirect to the Cerambycinae template. Dawynn (talk) 11:36, 5 December 2014 (UTC)
    • Templates look good, categories for all those that reach 60 (even those not specifically mentioned). Waacstats (talk) 20:50, 24 December 2014 (UTC)

Split of Category:Tortricinae stubs[edit]

Category:Defunct United Kingdom intelligence agencies stubs[edit]

I am proposing the creation of the Defunct United Kingdom intelligence agencies stub template, to be named {{UK-defunct-intel-stub}} as there are many articles on defunct British intelligence agencies that I have considered stubs, including MI7, MI9, MI10, MI11 and so on. The stub should be a subcategory of the Category:United Kingdom government stubs. — Preceding unsigned comment added by William1835 (talkcontribs) 21:11, 21 November 2014‎

@William1835: How many articles would qualify for this? Are there any similar stub templates or categories for other countries that we could use for comparison? --Redrose64 (talk) 16:52, 22 November 2014 (UTC)

Italian painter stubs[edit]

1. I just created categories for Italian painter, 14th century birth stubs‎ and Italian painter, 20th century birth stubs‎

The Italian painters stub category has over 800 entries and creating subcategories may increase the speed of improvement. I say this meets either

S1 - the creation of a category for which an approved upmerged template already exists and is now in use on more than 60 articles.
S2 - the creation of an upmerged national-level template for a subject in which other such national-level templates currently exist

Rococo1700 (talk) 16:22, 21 September 2014 (UTC)

I think we should have a way to categorize "Disappearance of" type articles, since they are not appropriate for {{bio-stub}}. The code I have worked up is:

The reason I brought this here is that I can't find a suitable Icon to use. Something with two people, (like File:Crystal Clear app Login Manager.svg) involving a question mark, maybe? File:At a loss.svg is the only one even close.--Auric talk 14:09, 21 September 2014 (UTC)

Century stubs for short stories and short story collections[edit]

The Category:Novel stubs cat is very well diffused, but not the Category:Story stubs and Category:Short story collection stubs. I'm willing to help diffuse these cats. I suggest starting with centuries: 19thC-story-stub, 20thC-story-stub, 21stC-story-stub and their corresponding collection cats 19thC-story-collection-stub, 20thC-story-collection-stub, and 21stC-story-collection-stub. We can later add decade stubs as we see fit. Thanks, Aristophanes68 (talk) 23:14, 14 September 2014 (UTC)

Most of the entries in Category:Play stubs are plays whose dates are not readily available. But most of the ancient and medieval play-stub articles do have dates listed, but they have no category to sort into because we have no cats for anything before the 15th century--see Category:Pre-18th-century play stubs for the available options. There aren't a lot of these articles, but it seems odd to have no other place to put them, given how many other time-based play-stub cats we do have. Therefore I propose we create an "early-play-stub" template that would cover all the pre-12thC play stubs and that would be placed in the pre-18th-century category. Thanks, Aristophanes68 (talk) 21:16, 13 September 2014 (UTC)

Missing Decade-Play-Stub Cats[edit]

Under the S2 criteria, I propose creating Category:1900s play stubs (35 articles), Category:1910s play stubs (37 articles), Category:1940s play stubs (50 articles), Category:1950s play stubs (58 articles), and Category:2010s play stubs (53 articles). I believe that the decade-categorization is sufficiently established that it should not matter how many stubs are in these categories and that filling in the missing decades is more important. Also, I half-created the 2010s play stub cat before I realized that they needed to be requested here; it's still up, but not listed in any stub cats yet. Sorry! Aristophanes68 (talk) 02:59, 13 September 2014 (UTC)

Speedy create stub tags, create categories where the stub tags are used on enough articles. עוד מישהו Od Mishehu 19:58, 13 September 2014 (UTC)
I'm not sure I know what you mean. The stub tags exist, but they don't have matching categories yet, so they're all lumped together in Category:20th-century play stubs, etc. Are you saying create new stubs, or new cats? Aristophanes68 (talk) 20:21, 13 September 2014 (UTC)
I didn't know the tags existed. Try using them on existing stubs; any btag which is used on 60 stubs can get its own category. עוד מישהו Od Mishehu 03:20, 14 September 2014 (UTC)
I've been doing that with Category:Play stubs and have dramatically reduced the number of stubs in that catch-all category. As you can see from the numbers above, the 1950s stubs are just under 60, and the 1940s are close behind. Aristophanes68 (talk) 21:08, 14 September 2014 (UTC)

Category:Wisconsin people stubs[edit]

There are at least 100 articles in the current Category:Wisconsin stubs which are biographies. Additionally, there is the daughter category Category:Wisconsin politician stubs, with four daughter categories of its own, and containing over 400 articles. I believe this may be an S2, but am not sufficiently familiar with this area of Wikipedia to say. --Orange Mike | Talk 18:32, 13 July 2014 (UTC)--Orange Mike | Talk 18:32, 13 July 2014 (UTC)

Support but create {{Wisconsin-bio-stub}} too: the threshold for stub templates is lower than for stub cats, so if a cat is justifiable, the template must be as well. --Redrose64 (talk) 19:15, 13 July 2014 (UTC)
Not sure - how many of these 100 people are notable due to anything related to Wisconsin and are not politicians? Politicians in the US are always state-level, with the exception of candidates to become President or Vice President - and these usually had previous political roles. Any other person, though, is usually just some notable person who happens to have lived there - not enough to have them stub-tagged for it. עוד מישהו Od Mishehu 13:00, 14 July 2014 (UTC)
Owners and founders of local busiinesses; ditto local sports teams; chancellors of major universities; heads of Wisconsin-based religious bodies -- need I go on? --Orange Mike | Talk 03:46, 16 July 2014 (UTC)
Support with caution. Please only populate with people important for their impact on Wisconsin. For instance, the article on Augustin Langlade claims that his trading post helped establish what later became Green Bay, WI. But really -- Americans move around so much that, unless the person truly impacted the state in some way, there's no reason to tag them specific to the state. That all being said, precedent had already been set with other states (e.g. {{Texas-bio-stub}}). Dawynn (talk) 11:22, 1 August 2014 (UTC)

Split of Category:Romantic drama film stubs[edit]

Propose the following tags to add year of release and reduce double-tagging of film articles:

Dawynn (talk) 13:27, 14 May 2014 (UTC)

  • Weak oppose. An examination of all the articles in Category:Romantic drama film stubs shows that not all of these templates are necessary. Yes, sometimes stub categories need to be broken down by decade because of size, and the 1910s and 1990s templates might have enough articles to warrant their own categories. But per WP:STUB, it is unnecessary to create a stub tag to indicate decade of release if 1) there aren't enough articles using it to meet the threshold for a stub category, and 2) all the articles involved already have a genre stub tag that is sufficient to cover the subject's main notability. Fortdj33 (talk) 13:56, 14 May 2014 (UTC)
  • I ran some quick catscans with results posted above. I only looked at movies from the specific parent categories. As noted above, the romantic drama category is obviously undersorted. Dawynn (talk) 15:05, 14 May 2014 (UTC)
I still can't advocate creating stub templates to break down this category by decade, unless there are enough articles for those templates to have their own categories. Adding {{1960s-romantic-drama-film-stub}} to only 16 articles, would not serve any purpose that {{romantic-drama-film-stub}} doesn't already serve. Fortdj33 (talk) 15:27, 14 May 2014 (UTC)
Granted -- this would fall under instruction 7 above. These would be upmerged , exploratory templates, upmerging to both Category:Romantic drama film stubs and the appropriate decade category (e.g. Category:1990s film stubs) while we get a better idea of whether we can find the appropriate numbers for a full category. Meanwhile, it would help any editors who have expertise of a particular decade of film to find these articles, rather than assuming that all movie viewers have equal interest in all of cinema history. Finally, this would help to succinctly tag articles with a single tag indicating both year of release and genre for these films. Dawynn (talk) 16:40, 14 May 2014 (UTC)
There may be specific projects for film genres and films from certain countries, but it is naive to believe that there are editors "who have expertise of a particular decade" for films. The only reason to break down a film category by decade, is because it is too large and needs to be divided into sub-categories. That is not the case here, so most of these templates are unnecessary, because they will all still feed into the same category. Fortdj33 (talk) 17:04, 14 May 2014 (UTC)
I will grant that "expertise" was a poor choose of words. But I would guess that users are probably more familiar with particular decades rather than all of cinema history. For myself, I have only rarely watched films older than about 1980. I would be more familiar with films in the 1980s, 1990s, and 2000s, and thus more inclined to edit those films rather than all films from any given time period, just because they fit a certain genre. I see a benefit in sorting by genre, but I don't understand the reluctance to sort by decade when it can be so beneficial toward helping users find film articles they want to edit. Category:American film biography stubs split[edit]

  • Support per nomination. The stub tag {{US-audio-engineer-stub}} has been created. Current count shows about 286 articles would qualify [2]. Fortdj33 (talk) 16:57, 14 January 2015 (UTC)

Category:1930s British film stubs splitting[edit]

Hi there. Since this category has over 800 articles, I suggest splitting this category by year. A quick search in the category reveals:

Category:1931 British film stubs [2] 65

Category:1932 British film stubs [3] 73

Category:1933 British film stubs [4] 89

Category:1934 British film stubs [5] 91

Category:1935 British film stubs [6] 88

Category:1936 British film stubs [7] 130

Category:1937 British film stubs [8] 114

Category:1938 British film stubs [9] 74

I also wish to propose an upmerged template for the following years:

Category:1930 British film stubs [1] 53

Category:1939 British film stubs [10] 50

With these categories, the backlog for this category would be greatly reduced. MrLinkinPark333 (talk) 20:18, 17 April 2014 (UTC)

Do we have any existing stub cats or templates that drill down to a specific year? How about subdividing by genre instead? That way, they could be subcats of e.g. Category:1930s comedy film stubs, etc. --Redrose64 (talk) 22:35, 17 April 2014 (UTC)
That could work. If splitting by genres works better, than I'll support that decision instead. MrLinkinPark333 (talk) 02:51, 18 April 2014 (UTC)
Support the genre proposal. Aristophanes68 (talk) 03:14, 13 September 2014 (UTC)

Category:New Zealand people stubs[edit]

Wonder if anyone here remembers me after all this time...

{{NewZealand-reli-bio-stub}} is now used on some 70 articles, and there are a heap more simply marked with {{NewZealand-bio-stub}} which could use it too. Enough for a Category:New Zealand religious biography stubs, I'd say.

If you're looking for further ways to split that oversized bio category, I'd think a {{NewZealand-crime-bio-stub}} would float - there seem to be quite a lot of police officers, prison staff, judges, and criminals in the bio category.

Also - and this is a far trickier one - you could remove a couple of hundred of the NZ bio-stubs in one fell swoop by making some form of Maori tribal leader stub. {{Māori-bio-stub}} is a bit too general, but perhaps {{Māori-leader-stub}} (with a redirect without the macron) would be very useful. Unfortunately, there's no equivalent permcat (Category:Tohunga is too specific), and Māori are divided primarily by their iwi (tribes). Any suggestions? Category:Aviation stubs[edit]

In light of the increasing integration of complex airplane systems, active development of related standards, and the hundreds of pages in the Category:Aviation stubs, I propose Template:Avionics-stub and Template:Avionics-software-stub which could also be associated, respectively with Category:Electronics stubs and Category:Software stubs. Some present stubs I would re-categorize:

Future Airborne Capability Environment
AIDS (aeronautics)
Built-in test equipment
Flight computer
Flight information display system
Operational display system
Stick shaker

Hong Kong people stubs[edit]

There are a couple categories in Category:Hong Kong people stubs, which are too specific to meet the threshold. I propose creating:

Fortdj33 (talk) 17:43, 7 April 2014 (UTC)

Category:Hong Kong film directors is pretty undersorted - I found another half a dozen articles at a quick scan and there are quite a few more. The artist stubs category would probably be useful, but I think upmerging might be a bit premature. Grutness...wha? 00:24, 23 April 2014 (UTC)

Category:Human migration stubs [edit]

I suggest creating this category, it's a really important topic and it hasn't got a category yet. 15:00, 29 March 2014

If you look at WP:WSS/P#Proposing new stub types – procedure, you'll see that it asks you to "find a good number of stub articles, as many as you can, that will fit that template"; so, what articles would you put in your proposed stub category? --Redrose64 (talk) 15:05, 29 March 2014 (UTC)
- This one, for example: Immigrant language — Preceding unsigned comment added by Darekkk (talkcontribs) 20:08, 29 March 2014‎
That's easily stub-sorted - {{Sociolinguistics-stub}} places it into Category:Linguistics stubs and Category:Sociology stubs. But that's just one - you really need 60. --Redrose64 (talk) 20:28, 29 March 2014 (UTC)

Category:Arctiidae stubs split[edit]

Category:Arctiidae stubs is well over 3000 articles, and the permanent itself is similarly oversized. Splitting this category into subfamilies results in two oversized subfamilies. There are a few genera that could support a category of their own, but I would propose a tribe-level split to help tame these categories. Propose all of the following templates, with categories for any that pass the 60 article barrier. My intent is to also build similar tribe-level permanent categories.

Category:British painter stubs[edit]

There are currently over 500 articles in this category and it would aid editors like myself, wishing to expand stubs, if we could break them down into centuries of birth, at least e.g.

Sionk (talk) 18:28, 27 November 2013 (UTC)

I would support doing the same thing we did for the US. Tag using the decade of birth, but categorize using the century:

Apart from the anonymously added list, do I take silence as consent? As the anonymous editor points out, there is precedent for this. I'd cite the French and Italian painter stub templates as a more comparable precedent ...though I'm sure if someone has the time and inclination they can categorise by decade too. See...

Avant-garde and experimental films template[edit]

Category already exists with 100+ entries, but there's no stub-type (, which essentially leaves out a whole continent of cinema. Doubly necessary since Wikipedia is so weak on this topic, and a lot of stubs exist (Symphonie diagonale, As I Was Moving Ahead Occasionally I Saw Brief Glimpses of Beauty), even on the most important films, like Dog Star Man (!!) and one which I just had to create, Tom, Tom, the Piper's Son (film). There are also thousands of notable films that don't even have stubs yet, so it definitely crosses the "good number" threshold... Tothebarricades (talk) 01:26, 26 November 2013 (UTC)

Category:Universalism stubs[edit]

Request, to pick up {{Universalism-stub}}. (32 P) --Devin Murphy (talk) 20:39, 13 April 2013 (UTC)

  • Oppose - only 31 transclusions, not the stub category for a WikiProject. עוד מישהו Od Mishehu 13:44, 14 April 2013 (UTC)
  • Weak oppose - It could, potentially, be a stub category for the Unitarian Universalism work group, but there is already a stub category for Category:Unitarian Universalism stubs which has only 34 articles. I don't know how many additional articles might be creatable based on the list at Wikipedia:WikiProject Religion/Unitarian Universalism work group/Encyclopedic articles, because it doesn't differentiate between Unitarian, Universalism, and Unitarian Universalism, but I think it might make more sense to create some of the missing articles relevant to universalism first. John Carter (talk) 22:20, 14 April 2013 (UTC)
  • There has been a wrench thrown into this proposal by User:Fadesga. Fadesga has removed {{Universalism-stub}} from the Universalist related biography subs that I had put it on and created {{Universalism-bio-stub}} and put it on the Universalist related biography subs instead. Their rationale for this change is this; "the Category:Religion stubs is overpopulated, while the Category:Religious biography stubs is underpopulated". Now {{Universalism-stub}} is only used on 4 stubs. I wonder how this will impact this proposal? --Devin Murphy (talk) 21:47, 19 April 2013 (UTC)
  • A different proposal. I have been looking at these stub templates, that seem to be related to each other:
  • {{UnitarianUniversalism-stub}} with 36 stubs (and they have their own, too small, stub category),
  • {{Unitarianism-stub}} with 25 stubs (and they also have their own, too small, stub category)
  • {{Universalism-stub}} + the directly related {{Universalism-bio-stub}}, together there are 32 stubs (and Devin Murphy is proposing a category).
My proposal is somehow different. Given the fact that there are already two underpopulated categories, I am thinking about some kind of redistribution. (Further looking at other related categories, I see that there is an existing {{Unitarian, Universalist and Unitarian Universalist topics}}). Instead of having each template a separate category, there could be an "umbrella" stub category taking up all of them; or an alternative, using transcluded templates:
My 2 cents... --Fadesga (talk) 12:03, 21 April 2013 (UTC)
  • Category:Universalism stubs would be under my proposal a subcategory of Category:Universalism. I am proposing that all articles marked {{Universalism-stub}} and {{Universalism-bio-stub}} be put into this new category. I am making this proposal as a way to list all the Universalisim stub artistic separately from the Unitarian Universalism ones in the same manner as is done with the Unitarianism subs using Category:Unitarianism stubs. I feel this is a good thing to do as it helps folks who would like to work on only one of these arias and not all three of them to have an easy way to do this. I am open though to alliterative ways to achieve this. --Devin Murphy (talk) 17:34, 29 June 2013 (UTC)

Languages spoken by country stubs[edit]

Hi fellow Wikipedians. I am looking at the Category:Nigeria stubs. It looks like there are too many language-related stubs in each of them. I have just created the submerged template {{Nigeria-lang-stub}} which would eventually help de-populate the already big Category:Nigeria stubs. So, my proposal is to create a Category:Language stubs by country, which would include all eventual country-specific language stub categories. What do you say? Regards, --Fadesga (talk) 18:17, 14 March 2013 (UTC)

Do not support. In this case, consider this one vote. I'm frankly concerned about how to interpret "language spoken in Nigeria". I'll use an example from my experience: English is the only official language in the USA. But many companies hire people that speak fluent Spanish, because of the need to communicate with immigrants from Central and South America. Because Spanish has become so prevalent in the US, I could approve an argument that Spanish is spoken in the USA. But, take it a step further. There are conclaves of many different language groups especially in larger cities. Is it fair to say that Chinese or Korean is a language spoken in the USA just because a few neighborhoods might retain the language of their homeland? Do we say that French is "spoken" in the US, just because a large number of schools teach French classes, even though the language is not prevalently used in day-to-day activities? Thus, I find it dangerous first to say what languages are or are not "spoken" in a given country.
Beyond this, I have my doubts that we'll be able to create a need for a "Language stubs by country". Consider: How many countries really have more than 60 languages prevalently in use? For each of those, how many of the languages would be a) documented but b) documented only by stub articles on this English wikipedia? Dawynn (talk) 14:00, 18 March 2013 (UTC)
Just looking at the articles tagged with {{Nigeria-stub}}, and see that there are a lot of language articles for Nigeria. Please wait for other opinions. My naïveté may not be the last word on this subject. Dawynn (talk) 14:08, 18 March 2013 (UTC)

Minor point: they should have dashs not spaces before stub. I know Victoria (Australia) gets stub tagged as VictoriaAU, so maybe append ES when it's needed? After checking, it looks like we do that already for {{LaRiojaES-geo-stub}} but thre is no prior Guadalajara stub tag as it is covered by {{CastileLaMancha-geo-stub}}. I notice this list is a lot more extensive than the geography categories, eg A Coruna, Lugo etc are grouped under {{Galicia-geo-stub}}, and many others are similarly collected by autonomous community rather than province. I don't know how many articles you are making, but it would currently average less than 10 articles per province. Is a full by province split the best idea when it is already largely split by building type (and Catalonia), or would by Autonomous community to match the geography cats do the job better? --Qetuth (talk) 04:12, 6 January 2013 (UTC)
Do you think I'd have proposed this if the intention wasn't to dramatically populate them?♦ Dr. ☠ Blofeld 22:22, 17 January 2013 (UTC)

Literary character stubs[edit]

In sorting stub articles that are part of {{WikiProject Fictional characters}}, a lot of character stubs have been tagged with {{lit-char-stub}}, because many characters are introduced in books before they become film or TV characters. Consequently, Category:Literary character stubs is growing (currently 635 articles), but all of these stub articles are also part of {{WikiProject Novels}}, {{WikiProject Literature}} or {{WikiProject Children's literature}}. Since there is already a corresponding {{lit-char-stub}} and {{child-lit-char-stub}} for the latter two, I propose that a new stub tag be created, to better classify these articles, and differentiate the stubs for characters that came from novels. Any suggestions? Fortdj33 (talk) 17:10, 1 December 2012 (UTC)

Articles tagged by lit-char-stub by Catscan:
  • Theatre characters: 32
  • Poetry characters: 19
  • Science Fiction characters: 46
  • Fantasy characters: 83
  • Novel characters: 324
  • Children's lit characters: 19
  • Characters in legends: 6
There is of course some overlap, and I haven't figured out where the other 250 or so are hiding, but:
Well, I think that {{novel-char-stub}} would be useful, because the other fictional character stubs are divided by medium (animation, comics, film, etc.) {{Theat-char-stub}} might also be useful, as it would be more specific (such as for characters from Shakespeare and Cats, some of which are currently using {{lit-char-stub}}). But I think that {{fantasy-char-stub}} is unnecessary, as it is too broad and could possibly include characters from more than one medium. Fortdj33 (talk) 21:24, 4 December 2012 (UTC)
I suggested fantasy because sf and MiddleEarth existed, and because I thought potential editors might be more interested in genre than medium, when so many chars cross mediums but few cross genres. (In this sense 'comics' is almost more of a genre than a medium). But thinking further you are right that {{novel-char-stub}} would be useful, and easier to clearly define that fantasy. --Qetuth (talk) 22:38, 4 December 2012 (UTC)
