On this WP:WSS subpage, you can propose new stub types (please read the procedures beforehand!), as well as the reorganization and subdivision of existing stub types. You can also discuss anything else related to stubs on the talk page.

Proposing new stub types – procedure[edit]

Important: If you wish to propose the creation of a stub ARTICLE you've come to the wrong place. If you don't have a username yourself, please go to WP:AFC for proposing a new article. If you already have a username, you can create the article yourself. If you don't know how, add {{Helpme}} to your user talk page to request help from other editors. This page only deals with stub TEMPLATES and CATEGORIES; we cannot help you with creating articles.

Proposing new stub types
If you wish to propose a new stub category and template, please follow these procedures:
  1. Check the List of stub types or under Category:Stub categories to make sure that your proposed new stub does not already exist.
  2. List it at the top of the current month's section, under a header, like the ones shown (if any). Sign it with a datestamp (~~~~).
    • Please bear in mind that a stub category isn't about the importance or notability of the topic!
  3. Find a good number[1] of stub articles, as many as you can, that will fit that template. You may use this tool to scan through categories, or this one in more complicated cases; tagged stubs are always 2 levels down in Category:Stub categories and transclude {{asbox}}. Each of these articles can be:
    • currently marked with {{stub}};
    • currently marked with another type of stub tag (in which case you should justify why your tag is better for the article than the current one);
    • a stub whose categorisation is highly ambiguous or questionable;
    • not marked as a stub.
  4. If you use any category scan (from the tool mentioned above or from any other), please link to it so that other users can confirm that the results are still accurate.
  5. Others may do the same, if they so desire.
  6. 5 days after listing it here, if there is general approval or no objection, go ahead and create the new category and/or template following the format on Wikipedia:Stub. List the new stub type on the stub types list in an appropriate section. If consensus is not clear, or discussion is still ongoing, the proposal will remain open until consensus can be reached.
  7. If you wish to propose a stub type which does not currently have 60 articles that could use it, you may propose an upmerged template in a similar way. An upmerged template would feed into currently existing stub categories until such time that there are enough stubs for a separate stub category. At that point a category for it may be separately proposed.

DO NOT place a proposal here for any stub type which has already been created and is being discussed at Wikipedia:Categories for discussion. The proposal page is only for stub types that have not yet been created, and it is better to keep any discussion of such stub types in one place rather than splitting it between different pages. Wikipedia:Categories for discussion is the correct page for proposals to delete a stub type.

^ . Good number means about 60 articles or more, or 30 or more if it is the primary stub type of a WikiProject, though this figure may vary from case to case.

"Speedy creation"[edit]

A stub type may be proposed for "speedy creation" if it meets one of the following criteria:

  • S1 - the creation of a category for which an approved upmerged template already exists and is now in use on more than 60 articles.
  • S2 - the creation of an upmerged national-level template for a subject in which other such national-level templates currently exist (e.g., X-bio-stub, X-hist-stub, or X-geo-stub, where X is the name of an internationally widely recognised country) or other instances where a clearly established pattern of similar subtypes exists. The proposed topic may not be controversial in scope. Many templates qualifying for S2 are listed at Wikipedia:WikiProject Stub sorting/To do/To create.

List speedy creation proposals in the same proposal listings as normal stub proposals below.

Proposals, August 2014[edit]

Please check how many articles qualify for a stub type before proposing it.

Category:California Registered Historic Place stubs split[edit]

I propose splitting Category:California Registered Historic Place stubs - create stub tags per county, and categories for any county with over 60 stubs (if any), as well as regions (as defined by Category:California geography stubs) which pass that size. עוד מישהו Od Mishehu 12:03, 22 August 2014 (UTC)

Category:Plumas County, California geography stubs[edit]

{{PlumasCountyCA-geo-stub}} has 69 transclusions, I think we should give it its own category. עוד מישהו Od Mishehu 09:59, 22 August 2014 (UTC)

Category:Mono County, California geography stubs[edit]

{{MonoCountyCA-geo-stub}} is up to 60 transclusions, I thnk we should give it a stub category - Category:Mono County, California geography stubs. עוד מישהו Od Mishehu 08:38, 22 August 2014 (UTC)

Category:Placer County, California geography stubs[edit]

{{PlacerCountyCA-geo-stub}} has 111 transclusions, I think we should give it its own category. עוד מישהו Od Mishehu 08:26, 22 August 2014 (UTC)

Categoiry:Los Angeles, California geography stubs[edit]

I propose creating Category:Los Angeles, California geography stubs/{{LosAngeles-geo-stub}} - a quick scan finds 154 stubs for this. עוד מישהו Od Mishehu 04:56, 22 August 2014 (UTC)

Split of Category:Cerambycinae stubs[edit]

Sorting Category:Cerambycidae stubs has now overloaded the subfamily category, Category:Cerambycinae stubs. Propose splitting by tribe, just like the permanent category. The following tribes have already shown themselves to be worth a template, and many will be able to support a full category, once all the species are sorted:

Counts reflect current status, although many are not fully loaded. Category:Cerambycinae is fairly well sorted out to the tribes, but the parent, Category:Cerambycidae, has nearly 6000 articles awaiting proper sorting, many of which will flow into the various Cerambycinae tribe categories. Dawynn (talk) 11:46, 19 August 2014 (UTC)

Proposals of India-cricket-ground-stub[edit]

{{WPSS-cat}} {{Stub Category |article= [[cricket ground]]s in India |newstub=India-cricket-ground-stub |category=Cricket grounds in India}} [[Category:Indian sports venue stubs|Cricket]] [[Category:Cricket ground stubs| India]] — Preceding unsigned comment added by Harshhussey (talkcontribs) 10:19, 19 August 2014‎

@Harshhussey: What exactly are you proposing? You appear to have copied the code from a category page (and I've had to enclose it in <nowiki>...</nowiki> to prevent this page from being wrongly categorised), that is not how new stub types are proposed - see WP:WSS/P#Proposing new stub types – procedure for advice on proposing a new stub type, and see below for some examples of proposals. --Redrose64 (talk) 14:12, 19 August 2014 (UTC)

Rethinking Category:Polyphaga stubs[edit]

Split of Category:Cerambycidae stubs[edit]

We have previously approved a subfamily-level split for this category. I will be working on that -- although even some of the subfamilies are reaching capacity. Looking to pull off the larger genera into categories of their own. Based on current record counts, the following can support their own categories:

(I only looked at the family-level category for this request. More requests may follow) Dawynn (talk) 12:25, 13 August 2014 (UTC)

Category:Washington, D.C. politician stubs[edit]

I propose creating Category:Washington, D.C. politician stubs - {{WashingtonDC-politician-stub}} has 64 transclusions. עוד מישהו Od Mishehu 12:03, 11 August 2014 (UTC)

Category:Lycosidae stubs[edit]

New Telangana templates[edit]

Category:North America university stubs[edit]

Category:Italian painter stubs speedy category[edit]

The template Template:Italy-painter-19thC-stub has reached 60 articles. I suggest creating Category:Italian painter, 19th century birth stubs‎ to help with this overpopulated stub category. --MrLinkinPark333 (talk) 02:15, 3 August 2014 (UTC)

Category:University of Louisville stubs and {{ULouisville-stub}}[edit]

Category:Louisville, Kentucky stubs has gotten very large again (~1,000) as I've been identifying stubs that belong there and adding them. One seemingly high growth area are stubs/articles related to the University of Louisville, with articles of its athletes, teams, alumni growing like bunny rabbits, and I anticipate this only putting increasing strain on Category:Louisville, Kentucky stubs. There are currently 233 stubs that would qualify to be moved from Category:Louisville, Kentucky stubs to Category:University of Louisville stubs. This is more than the recently created Category:Louisville, Kentucky building and structure stubs holds. This approach follows that of {{UGeorgia-stub}} that uses its own dedicated category. Because I anticipate significant growth, I think a dedicated category is called for here as well. I will make Category:University of Louisville stubs a subcat of Category:Louisville, Kentucky stubs, Category:Kentucky university stubs and Category:University of Louisville. Note that Category:Kentucky university stubs would be new as well, and I will direct {{Kentucky-university-stub}} articles there. Stevie is the man! TalkWork 18:50, 2 August 2014 (UTC)

Merely the fact that vone studied in this university doesn't justify adding the university's stub tag to the article (if it happens to be a stub). And definitely not the universty's city! An article about a person should not have sub-national regional stub tags, unless the person's notability is related to that location (e.g city mayors, U.S. state politicians, etc.). עוד מישהו Od Mishehu 07:02, 3 August 2014 (UTC)
Can you link to the guideline for this? In my experience here, a city-related stub applies to any stub article related to a city, including people who are from that city in some way. An alumnus from a university would be related to that university. I have not seen a guideline that suggests anything as restrictive as your position. Stevie is the man! TalkWork 11:31, 3 August 2014 (UTC)
Upon further examination, I assume that you are referring to "If an article overlaps several stub categories, more than one template may be used, but it is strongly recommended that only those relating to the subject's main notability be used". This appears to be a suggestion in the sense of avoiding too many stub templates, and so keep the 3 or 4 most related to the subject's notability. I would note that in many if not most of the cases involved here, the subject's time spent attending or working/playing at the university is indeed part of their main notability. But I think it's a stretch to deny a stub (the first or second in many cases) because one could argue that the stub template doesn't correspond to the subject's main notability. Stevie is the man! TalkWork 12:38, 3 August 2014 (UTC)
As for articles about persons, I'll take the point about the stub for a university's city, so for those cases, this new stub should be seen as corrective. Otherwise, like I said, in many if not most cases, a person's main notability would indeed correspond to a {{ULouisville-stub}}. We can be selective (over-selective in my view) and withdraw the stub in cases where this is not true, but we will still be left with a large number of cases where having this new stub makes sense. Stevie is the man! TalkWork 12:57, 3 August 2014 (UTC)

Proposals, July 2014[edit]

Category:German football forward stubs speedy category[edit]

The 1990s birth template has gone over 60 articles. I suggest creating Category German football forward, 1990s birth stubs‎ since the template has already been created. --MrLinkinPark333 (talk) 21:41, 25 July 2014 (UTC)

Support as an existing template with enough uses for a category. עוד מישהו Od Mishehu 13:32, 27 July 2014 (UTC)
Created. --MrLinkinPark333 (talk) 18:43, 1 August 2014 (UTC)

Category:United States sport stubs split[edit]

I propose creating state tags for this cateory, and categories for any state with enough stubs (this would include any state with a full-sized sports venue category) and for the 4 regions (based on the Category:United States building and structure stubs tree). In addition to venues, this would include sports teams, major compititions, etc. עוד מישהו Od Mishehu 05:44, 21 July 2014 (UTC)

Category:European spacecraft stubs[edit]

Inline hockey team templates[edit]

Category:Louisville metropolitan area stubs and {{LouisvilleMSA-stub}}[edit]

Category:Chicago, Illinois building and structure stubs[edit]

I propose creating Category:Chicago, Illinois building and structure stubs/{{Chicago-struct-stub}} - this would be the intersection of 2 categories, which has almost 150 right now - and there are probably a lot more. Given that Category:Chicago, Illinois stubs is oversized, I think we should create this. עוד מישהו Od Mishehu 13:03, 14 July 2014 (UTC)

Category:Wisconsin people stubs[edit]

There are at least 100 articles in the current Category:Wisconsin stubs which are biographies. Additionally, there is the daughter category Category:Wisconsin politician stubs, with four daughter categories of its own, and containing over 400 articles. I believe this may be an S2, but am not sufficiently familiar with this area of Wikipedia to say. --Orange Mike | Talk 18:32, 13 July 2014 (UTC)--Orange Mike | Talk 18:32, 13 July 2014 (UTC)

Support but create {{Wisconsin-bio-stub}} too: the threshold for stub templates is lower than for stub cats, so if a cat is justifiable, the template must be as well. --Redrose64 (talk) 19:15, 13 July 2014 (UTC)
Not sure - how many of these 100 people are notable due to anything related to Wisconsin and are not politicians? Politicians in the US are always state-level, with the exception of candidates to become President or Vice President - and these usually had previous political roles. Any other person, though, is usually just some notable person who happens to have lived there - not enough to have them stub-tagged for it. עוד מישהו Od Mishehu 13:00, 14 July 2014 (UTC)
Owners and founders of local busiinesses; ditto local sports teams; chancellors of major universities; heads of Wisconsin-based religious bodies -- need I go on? --Orange Mike | Talk 03:46, 16 July 2014 (UTC)
Support with caution. Please only populate with people important for their impact on Wisconsin. For instance, the article on Augustin Langlade claims that his trading post helped establish what later became Green Bay, WI. But really -- Americans move around so much that, unless the person truly impacted the state in some way, there's no reason to tag them specific to the state. That all being said, precedent had already been set with other states (e.g. {{Texas-bio-stub}}). Dawynn (talk) 11:22, 1 August 2014 (UTC)

Category:Plant disease stubs[edit]

I propose splitting this category into Template:Fungal plant disease stubs, Template:Water mould plant disease stubs and Template:Plant pathogenic nematode stubs. The plant disease category contains over 1400 stubs and more than half of these are fungal diseases. I expect that the fungal plant disease need to be subdivided further but that is beyond my technical knowledge.Staranise (talk) 07:01, 5 July 2014 (UTC)

Two remaining continent subcats for Category:Poet stubs[edit]

Category:Poet stubs is mostly divided by continent- except for North America and Oceania, which don't have their own cateogries. Since each of these continents has at least 1 viable subcat, I think we should create these 2 categories - Category:North American poet stubs and Category:Oceanian poet stubs. עוד מישהו Od Mishehu 18:12, 19 May 2014 (UTC)

Category:Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania building and structure stubs[edit]

I noticed that Category:Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania stubs is oversized. I think that we could help deal with that using Category:Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania building and structure stubs/{{Pittsburgh-struct-stub}} - even if we were to look at the intersectionb of the two parent stub cats, we get 63 stubs, plenty for a category; and we would be likely to have many more, including most of the other 33 here from Category:Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania stubs, and others - even possibly a total of more than 200. עוד מישהו Od Mishehu 05:06, 19 May 2014 (UTC)

Split of Category:Romantic drama film stubs[edit]

Propose the following tags to add year of release and reduce double-tagging of film articles:

Dawynn (talk) 13:27, 14 May 2014 (UTC)

  • Weak oppose. An examination of all the articles in Category:Romantic drama film stubs shows that not all of these templates are necessary. Yes, sometimes stub categories need to be broken down by decade because of size, and the 1910s and 1990s templates might have enough articles to warrant their own categories. But per WP:STUB, it is unnecessary to create a stub tag to indicate decade of release if 1) there aren't enough articles using it to meet the threshold for a stub category, and 2) all the articles involved already have a genre stub tag that is sufficient to cover the subject's main notability. Fortdj33 (talk) 13:56, 14 May 2014 (UTC)
  • I ran some quick catscans with results posted above. I only looked at movies from the specific parent categories. As noted above, the romantic drama category is obviously undersorted. Dawynn (talk) 15:05, 14 May 2014 (UTC)
I still can't advocate creating stub templates to break down this category by decade, unless there are enough articles for those templates to have their own categories. Adding {{1960s-romantic-drama-film-stub}} to only 16 articles, would not serve any purpose that {{romantic-drama-film-stub}} doesn't already serve. Fortdj33 (talk) 15:27, 14 May 2014 (UTC)
Granted -- this would fall under instruction 7 above. These would be upmerged , exploratory templates, upmerging to both Category:Romantic drama film stubs and the appropriate decade category (e.g. Category:1990s film stubs) while we get a better idea of whether we can find the appropriate numbers for a full category. Meanwhile, it would help any editors who have expertise of a particular decade of film to find these articles, rather than assuming that all movie viewers have equal interest in all of cinema history. Finally, this would help to succinctly tag articles with a single tag indicating both year of release and genre for these films. Dawynn (talk) 16:40, 14 May 2014 (UTC)
There may be specific projects for film genres and films from certain countries, but it is naive to believe that there are editors "who have expertise of a particular decade" for films. The only reason to break down a film category by decade, is because it is too large and needs to be divided into sub-categories. That is not the case here, so most of these templates are unnecessary, because they will all still feed into the same category. Fortdj33 (talk) 17:04, 14 May 2014 (UTC)
I will grant that "expertise" was a poor choose of words. But I would guess that users are probably more familiar with particular decades rather than all of cinema history. For myself, I have only rarely watched films older than about 1980. I would be more familiar with films in the 1980s, 1990s, and 2000s, and thus more inclined to edit those films rather than all films from any given time period, just because they fit a certain genre. I see a benefit in sorting by genre, but I don't understand the reluctance to sort by decade when it can be so beneficial toward helping users find film articles they want to edit. Category:American film biography stubs split[edit]

Category:United States church stubs split[edit]

I propose splitting Category:United States church stubs/{{US-church-stub}} - a category for each of the 4 regions (as Category:United States building and structure stubs and several of its subcats are already split); and stub tags (and categories where at least 60 are present) for each state and DC. Additionally, I propose a category/tag set for New York City (161 stubs, along with tags for each of the boroughs and a category for Manhattan (73 stubs, struct category over 500 stubs). עוד מישהו Od Mishehu 18:05, 29 April 2014 (UTC)

Category:By-elections to the Parliament of the United Kingdom stubs[edit]

I propose creating Category:By-elections to the Parliament of the United Kingdom stubs and Template:UK-Parl-by-election-stub. This to split Category:British election stubs (which currently contains 1,112 pages) on its intersection with Category:By-elections to the Parliament of the United Kingdom. The resulting by-election category would contain 903 pages. If that needs further splitting, a split by constituent country of the UK would follow the structure of Category:By-elections to the Parliament of the United Kingdom. --BrownHairedGirl (talk) • (contribs) 13:32, 24 April 2014 (UTC)

  • Support. Do we have any existing stub cats or templates for by-elections elsewhere? --Redrose64 (talk) 19:46, 24 April 2014 (UTC)
@Redrose64: I can't find any. Tried a search for templates and for categories, but don't see any stubs in the results.
Not sure that it's necessarily relevant whether we have any for other parliaments. --BrownHairedGirl (talk) • (contribs) 00:52, 25 April 2014 (UTC)
My thought was that if others exist, we could copy some of their characteristics. --Redrose64 (talk) 08:51, 25 April 2014 (UTC)
@Redrose64: Thanks, I get your point. Not sure that there are many relevant comparators.
My main concern here is to ensure that the template title doesn't imply that its scope includes by-elections to other Parliaments within the UK. There is also Category:By-elections to the Scottish Parliament, and while we don't yet appear to have any articles on by-elns to the Parliament of Northern Ireland, I'm sure that at least some of the by-elns were notable and coukd be the subject of articles if anyone chose to write them. --BrownHairedGirl (talk) • (contribs) 01:50, 26 April 2014 (UTC)
Propose creating subcats

Looking again at the figures, the proposal above would create Category:By-elections to the Parliament of the United Kingdom stubs with over 920 pages. That's way oversized.
So I think it would be better to split it at the outset into constituent countries:

Those are more manageable sizes. --BrownHairedGirl (talk) • (contribs) 19:09, 28 April 2014 (UTC)

Category:Long Island geography stubs[edit]

I propose Category:Long Island geography stubs - in addition to Category:Queens geography stubs (undersized, with 48 stubs), this would also catch {{BrooklynNY-geo-stub}} (23 transclusions), {{NassauCountyNY-geo-stub}}(13 transclustions) and {{SuffolkCountyNY-geo-stub}} (26 transclusions) - which makes 62 excluding Queens. Note that this category has a permcat - Category:Geography of Long Island. עוד מישהו Od Mishehu 05:44, 24 April 2014 (UTC)

Category:Italian painter stubs sub category[edit]

Since we have 15th-18th century birth stubs subcategories, I propose having Category:Italian painter, 19th century birth stubs‎. I don't have an exact number for all the years, but using Cat Scan reveals that 75 painters were born from 1801-1820. I can provide a link if needed. MrLinkinPark333 (talk) 23:24, 19 April 2014 (UTC)

Just found that the Template:Italy-painter-19thC-stub is used on 35 painters. I have to check if they are accurate. MrLinkinPark333 (talk) 04:12, 26 April 2014 (UTC)

Category:Figure skating biography stubs sub-categories[edit]

Proposing new figure skating sub-categories.

Also there is a bunch of other countries with 20+ relevant stubs, yet Category:Ukrainian figure skating biography stubs has 17 articles - why is there this inconsistent number limit? Thanks, Kirin13 (talk) 18:45, 18 April 2014 (UTC)

Okay - that makes sense in why it was created ... but why is it okay to retain categories of under 20 if we don't allow creation of categories of 30? Looking at Category:European figure skating biography stubs there is 467 articles there. Wouldn't it be better organization (& easier for less experienced editors) if we took out the countries that have 20/30/x articles and gave them their country category. I understand why we wouldn't want to do this everywhere, but with sports, we have a pretty established categorization system so if there is x number of articles, why not split? Why have the magic number be 60? Also, when countries are in the upmerged category, they get intermixed, unlike countries who have their own category. Why don't we at least sort by country if they are in the upmerged category? Sorry if I'm asking stupid questions, I'm still learning. Thanks, Kirin13 (talk) 20:52, 18 April 2014 (UTC)
Sorry, more questions. 1) Using S2, does the 60 article requirement apply? If not, what rules apply? 2) Since 'speedy support' does that mean I can create category now or should I wait five days? Besides creating category, what else must be done? Is there a fast way to edit category in 60+ articles? Thanks, Kirin13 (talk) 23:01, 18 April 2014 (UTC)
S2 is for templates, but {{Austria-figure-skating-bio-stub}} and {{Switzerland-figure-skating-bio-stub}} already exist. However, you're asking for categries, which are S1, so it's a 60-article threshold for creation of the cat. Action to take is to edit the two stub templates (use {{Germany-figure-skating-bio-stub}} as a guide), then create the two categories (use Category:German figure skating biography stubs as a guide). Then updateWikipedia:WikiProject Stub sorting/Stub types/Sports#By sport (use the existing entry for Germany as a guide). --Redrose64 (talk) 09:08, 19 April 2014 (UTC)
Is there a way to edit categories of the stub articles in mass? Kirin13 (talk) 23:47, 22 April 2014 (UTC)
@Kirin13: Edit which categories? In what way do they need editing? Editing en masse is often a bot task, but is this something that WP:AWB could do? --Redrose64 (talk) 19:48, 24 April 2014 (UTC)
Nvm, stubs edit themselves, just takes time. Kirin13 (talk) 22:50, 25 April 2014 (UTC)

Category:1930s British film stubs splitting[edit]

Hi there. Since this category has over 800 articles, I suggest splitting this category by year. A quick search in the category reveals:

Category:1931 British film stubs [2] 65

Category:1932 British film stubs [3] 73

Category:1933 British film stubs [4] 89

Category:1934 British film stubs [5] 91

Category:1935 British film stubs [6] 88

Category:1936 British film stubs [7] 130

Category:1937 British film stubs [8] 114

Category:1938 British film stubs [9] 74

I also wish to propose an upmerged template for the following years:

Category:1930 British film stubs [1] 53

Category:1939 British film stubs [10] 50

With these categories, the backlog for this category would be greatly reduced. MrLinkinPark333 (talk) 20:18, 17 April 2014 (UTC)

Do we have any existing stub cats or templates that drill down to a specific year? How about subdividing by genre instead? That way, they could be subcats of e.g. Category:1930s comedy film stubs, etc. --Redrose64 (talk) 22:35, 17 April 2014 (UTC)
That could work. If splitting by genres works better, than I'll support that decision instead. MrLinkinPark333 (talk) 02:51, 18 April 2014 (UTC)

Category:New Zealand people stubs[edit]

Wonder if anyone here remembers me after all this time...

{{NewZealand-reli-bio-stub}} is now used on some 70 articles, and there are a heap more simply marked with {{NewZealand-bio-stub}} which could use it too. Enough for a Category:New Zealand religious biography stubs, I'd say.

If you're looking for further ways to split that oversized bio category, I'd think a {{NewZealand-crime-bio-stub}} would float - there seem to be quite a lot of police officers, prison staff, judges, and criminals in the bio category.

Also - and this is a far trickier one - you could remove a couple of hundred of the NZ bio-stubs in one fell swoop by making some form of Maori tribal leader stub. {{Māori-bio-stub}} is a bit too general, but perhaps {{Māori-leader-stub}} (with a redirect without the macron) would be very useful. Unfortunately, there's no equivalent permcat (Category:Tohunga is too specific), and Māori are divided primarily by their iwi (tribes). Any suggestions? Grutness...wha? 13:13, 12 April 2014 (UTC) (PS - I'm just passing through, not back here full-time!)

Category:Aviation stubs[edit]

In light of the increasing integration of complex airplane systems, active development of related standards, and the hundreds of pages in the Category:Aviation stubs, I propose Template:Avionics-stub and Template:Avionics-software-stub which could also be associated, respectively with Category:Electronics stubs and Category:Software stubs. Some present stubs I would re-categorize:

Future Airborne Capability Environment
AIDS (aeronautics)
Built-in test equipment
Flight computer
Flight information display system
Operational display system
Stick shaker

Hong Kong people stubs[edit]

There are a couple categories in Category:Hong Kong people stubs, which are too specific to meet the threshold. I propose creating:

Fortdj33 (talk) 17:43, 7 April 2014 (UTC)

Category:Hong Kong film directors is pretty undersorted - I found another half a dozen articles at a quick scan and there are quite a few more. The artist stubs category would probably be useful, but I think upmerging might be a bit premature. Grutness...wha? 00:24, 23 April 2014 (UTC)

Category:United States museum stubs split[edit]

I propose splitting Category:United States museum stubs to tags (and categories where at least 60 are present) by state and categories by region (as we have for Category:United States building and structure stubs anbd some of its subcats) - the category is already above 500, and that's excluding the one state which has its own stub category - Florida. עוד מישהו Od Mishehu 04:13, 4 April 2014 (UTC)

Proposals, March 2014[edit]

Category:Human migration stubs [edit]

I suggest creating this category, it's a really important topic and it hasn't got a category yet. 15:00, 29 March 2014

If you look at WP:WSS/P#Proposing new stub types – procedure, you'll see that it asks you to "find a good number of stub articles, as many as you can, that will fit that template"; so, what articles would you put in your proposed stub category? --Redrose64 (talk) 15:05, 29 March 2014 (UTC)
- This one, for example: Immigrant language — Preceding unsigned comment added by Darekkk (talkcontribs) 20:08, 29 March 2014‎
That's easily stub-sorted - {{Sociolinguistics-stub}} places it into Category:Linguistics stubs and Category:Sociology stubs. But that's just one - you really need 60. --Redrose64 (talk) 20:28, 29 March 2014 (UTC)

Category:2000s rock song stubs split[edit]

I propose splittting Category:2000s rock song stubs by decade:

With over 500 articles now, the category could approach thousands of articles by the end of the century. --Jax 0677 (talk) 23:51, 28 March 2014 (UTC)

It shouldn't need a split. Stub categories beginning "2000s" are always for a decade, not a century. --Redrose64 (talk) 00:00, 29 March 2014 (UTC)
I agree. If editors are adding the 2000s song stub into articles for 2010s songs, they are doing so incorrectly. Such songs that could be placed in the suggested stub template should be placed in both {{2010s-song-stub}} and {{rock-song-stub}}. When the number of song articles in both categories reach 60 (which I believe is the threshold), the 2010s-rock-song-stub can be created through proper procedures. --StarcheerspeaksnewslostwarsTalk to me 00:46, 29 March 2014 (UTC)
  • I'm not a regular here, but I know CfD. It seems to me that the 2010s rock song stub category is going to be needed and, as someone has created it, it should be retained now—all the more so, as the latest official specific rock song stub "2000s" is likely to be misunderstood by some inexperienced editors. – Fayenatic London 16:54, 29 March 2014 (UTC)
  • Reply - I agree with Fayenatic London on this one. Whether it is incorrect or not, inexperienced users who do not see a 2010s template available may use the 2000s template in its place, irrespective of whether it is correct. If other decades from the 20th century have required this, I am almost certain that decades in the 21st century will require it as well. --Jax 0677 (talk) 18:00, 29 March 2014 (UTC)
The normal process at WSS/P is that we create a decade-specific category when there is a demonstrable need, and not speculatively. Very few stub cats exist for centuries; in fact the only one that I know of is Category:20th-century play stubs and of its ten decades, six have their own subcategories, the other four upmerge. --Redrose64 (talk) 18:06, 29 March 2014 (UTC)
Comment While splitting is the wrong proposal here, I took it upon myself to diffuse Category:Rock song stubs, populating Category:2010s rock song stubs to 70 stub articles. I'm sure further digging within Category:2010s song stubs and Category:2000s rock song stubs will find more candidates for inclusion. --StarcheerspeaksnewslostwarsTalk to me 03:01, 3 April 2014 (UTC)

Category: KT Red[edit]

I propose the creation of Template:KT-Red-stub (popular social figure). KT Red is a model/actress based in Atlanta and has been featured on numerous television networks and film projects. She is a very well-known figure in the local area, as well as across the states. Her already notable momentum of success continues to increase as she is constantly shooting new projects, ranging from magazine covers and calendars to playing a minor suspect in J Lo's new movie, the dancer kidnapped by Travis Porter on The Game, or a recurring character on Single Ladies, Drop Dead Diva, and Devious Maids. She is also a recording artist with a life-changing story of overcoming solitude and abandonment. Thanks, OfficialKTred 09:26, 11 February 2014 (UTC)

Category:Bus stubs split[edit]

I propose splitting Category:Bus stubs - I see that the United States has 256 stubs tagged under this category and its subcats, and the UK has 83 stubs - both enough for {{US-bus-stub}}/Category:United States bus stubs and {{UK-bus-stub}}Category:United Kingdom bus stubs. I think we should also use multiple-upmerged stub tags for the eventual subcats - {{US-bus-station-stub}}, {{US-bus-company-stub}}, and {{UK-bus-station-stub}}. עוד מישהו Od Mishehu 05:48, 11 February 2014 (UTC)

Hi there. I have seen through the Category:Bus stubs and it is indeed very heterogeneous in content, there are bus models, lines, companies, systems, etc. I suggest that a more sensible, wide-ranging approach could be (by comparison with Category:Rail transport stubs): let's consider the creation of a Category:Bus transport stubs, in order to include all the stubs related to the generic topic "buses". The existing Category:Bus stubs could be considered as a sub-category of the new one, and reserved only for "buses proper" (I mean: stub articles currently included under the Category:Buses, of which a scan shows 195). Then, create some subcategories by country, for instance, Category:United States bus transport stubs and Category:United Kingdom bus transport stubs (each of them with the corresponding upmerged stub tags, etc.). Regards, --Fadesga (talk) 13:51, 14 February 2014 (UTC)

{{Laos-sport-stub}} has 27 transclusions; {{Laos-footyclub-stub}} has 13; {{Laos-footy-competition-stub}} has 23; {{Laos-sports-venue-stub}} has 7, for a total of 70. Of the articles that are currently stub-sorted with {{Germany-footy-defender-stub}} or {{Germany-footy-forward-stub}}, there are approx 5-8 articles that will fit in each of the proposed templates, but there are more than 900 articles that use {{Germany-footy-bio-stub}}, so I guess it can be used on some more. Yes, they are intended to work like those other templates. Mentoz (talk) 09:16, 31 January 2014 (UTC)

Category:Arctiidae stubs split[edit]

Category:Arctiidae stubs is well over 3000 articles, and the permanent itself is similarly oversized. Splitting this category into subfamilies results in two oversized subfamilies. There are a few genera that could support a category of their own, but I would propose a tribe-level split to help tame these categories. Propose all of the following templates, with categories for any that pass the 60 article barrier. My intent is to also build similar tribe-level permanent categories.

  • Support 2x templates and 2x categories. A quick glance shows that there are indeed well over 900 articles, and that the majority are School Districts, with High Schools a close second. Avant-garde and experimental films template[edit]

Category already exists with 100+ entries, but there's no stub-type (, which essentially leaves out a whole continent of cinema. Doubly necessary since Wikipedia is so weak on this topic, and a lot of stubs exist (Symphonie diagonale, As I Was Moving Ahead Occasionally I Saw Brief Glimpses of Beauty), even on the most important films, like Dog Star Man (!!) and one which I just had to create, Tom, Tom, the Piper's Son (film). It seems you copy-pasted a category page into {{Italy-painter-19thC-stub}}, but I fixed it into an upmerged template. I'm wondering though if upmerged templates like that needs another category than Category:Italian painter stubs. I see the 19th century stub-template now is used on 17 articles, I don't see the point of having templates for every century BC, so you should find a reasonable number of stubs for each template, even if there are upmerged. Category:Universalism stubs[edit]

Request, to pick up {{Universalism-stub}}. (32 P) --Devin Murphy (talk) 20:39, 13 April 2013 (UTC)

  • Oppose - only 31 transclusions, not the stub category for a WikiProject. עוד מישהו Od Mishehu 13:44, 14 April 2013 (UTC)
  • Weak oppose - It could, potentially, be a stub category for the Unitarian Universalism work group, but there is already a stub category for Category:Unitarian Universalism stubs which has only 34 articles. I don't know how many additional articles might be creatable based on the list at Wikipedia:WikiProject Religion/Unitarian Universalism work group/Encyclopedic articles, because it doesn't differentiate between Unitarian, Universalism, and Unitarian Universalism, but I think it might make more sense to create some of the missing articles relevant to universalism first. John Carter (talk) 22:20, 14 April 2013 (UTC)
  • There has been a wrench thrown into this proposal by User:Fadesga. Fadesga has removed {{Universalism-stub}} from the Universalist related biography subs that I had put it on and created {{Universalism-bio-stub}} and put it on the Universalist related biography subs instead. Their rationale for this change is this; "the Category:Religion stubs is overpopulated, while the Category:Religious biography stubs is underpopulated". Now {{Universalism-stub}} is only used on 4 stubs. I wonder how this will impact this proposal? --Devin Murphy (talk) 21:47, 19 April 2013 (UTC)
  • A different proposal. I have been looking at these stub templates, that seem to be related to each other:
  • {{UnitarianUniversalism-stub}} with 36 stubs (and they have their own, too small, stub category),
  • {{Unitarianism-stub}} with 25 stubs (and they also have their own, too small, stub category)
  • {{Universalism-stub}} + the directly related {{Universalism-bio-stub}}, together there are 32 stubs (and Devin Murphy is proposing a category).
My proposal is somehow different. Given the fact that there are already two underpopulated categories, I am thinking about some kind of redistribution. (Further looking at other related categories, I see that there is an existing {{Unitarian, Universalist and Unitarian Universalist topics}}). Instead of having each template a separate category, there could be an "umbrella" stub category taking up all of them; or an alternative, using transcluded templates:
My 2 cents... --Fadesga (talk) 12:03, 21 April 2013 (UTC)
  • Category:Universalism stubs would be under my proposal a subcategory of Category:Universalism. I am proposing that all articles marked {{Universalism-stub}} and {{Universalism-bio-stub}} be put into this new category. I am making this proposal as a way to list all the Universalisim stub artistic separately from the Unitarian Universalism ones in the same manner as is done with the Unitarianism subs using Category:Unitarianism stubs. I feel this is a good thing to do as it helps folks who would like to work on only one of these arias and not all three of them to have an easy way to do this. I am open though to alliterative ways to achieve this. --Devin Murphy (talk) 17:34, 29 June 2013 (UTC)

Languages spoken by country stubs[edit]

Hi fellow Wikipedians. I am looking at the Category:Nigeria stubs. It looks like there are too many language-related stubs in each of them. I have just created the submerged template {{Nigeria-lang-stub}} which would eventually help de-populate the already big Category:Nigeria stubs. So, my proposal is to create a Category:Language stubs by country, which would include all eventual country-specific language stub categories. What do you say? Regards, --Fadesga (talk) 18:17, 14 March 2013 (UTC)

Do not support. In this case, consider this one vote. I'm frankly concerned about how to interpret "language spoken in Nigeria". I'll use an example from my experience: English is the only official language in the USA. But many companies hire people that speak fluent Spanish, because of the need to communicate with immigrants from Central and South America. Because Spanish has become so prevalent in the US, I could approve an argument that Spanish is spoken in the USA. But, take it a step further. There are conclaves of many different language groups especially in larger cities. Is it fair to say that Chinese or Korean is a language spoken in the USA just because a few neighborhoods might retain the language of their homeland? Do we say that French is "spoken" in the US, just because a large number of schools teach French classes, even though the language is not prevalently used in day-to-day activities? Thus, I find it dangerous first to say what languages are or are not "spoken" in a given country.
Beyond this, I have my doubts that we'll be able to create a need for a "Language stubs by country". Consider: How many countries really have more than 60 languages prevalently in use? For each of those, how many of the languages would be a) documented but b) documented only by stub articles on this English wikipedia? Dawynn (talk) 14:00, 18 March 2013 (UTC)
Just looking at the articles tagged with {{Nigeria-stub}}, and see that there are a lot of language articles for Nigeria. Please wait for other opinions. My naïveté may not be the last word on this subject. Dawynn (talk) 14:08, 18 March 2013 (UTC)

It looks like the obvious corresponding permcats are all (currently) parent only (eg Category:Football competitions in the United Kingdom and Category:Football leagues in the United Kingdom). So it dosn't look like the template is strictly needed, but it always bugs me when I try to put a stub in a long-existing stub category and can't because it's parent only (it seems to happen at least once a week). Minor point: they should have dashs not spaces before stub. I know Victoria (Australia) gets stub tagged as VictoriaAU, so maybe append ES when it's needed? After checking, it looks like we do that already for {{LaRiojaES-geo-stub}} but thre is no prior Guadalajara stub tag as it is covered by {{CastileLaMancha-geo-stub}}. I notice this list is a lot more extensive than the geography categories, eg A Coruna, Lugo etc are grouped under {{Galicia-geo-stub}}, and many others are similarly collected by autonomous community rather than province. I don't know how many articles you are making, but it would currently average less than 10 articles per province. Is a full by province split the best idea when it is already largely split by building type (and Catalonia), or would by Autonomous community to match the geography cats do the job better? --Qetuth (talk) 04:12, 6 January 2013 (UTC)

Literary character stubs[edit]

In sorting stub articles that are part of {{WikiProject Fictional characters}}, a lot of character stubs have been tagged with {{lit-char-stub}}, because many characters are introduced in books before they become film or TV characters. Consequently, Category:Literary character stubs is growing (currently 635 articles), but all of these stub articles are also part of {{WikiProject Novels}}, {{WikiProject Literature}} or {{WikiProject Children's literature}}. Since there is already a corresponding {{lit-char-stub}} and {{child-lit-char-stub}} for the latter two, I propose that a new stub tag be created, to better classify these articles, and differentiate the stubs for characters that came from novels. Any suggestions? Fortdj33 (talk) 17:10, 1 December 2012 (UTC)

Articles tagged by lit-char-stub by Catscan:
  • Theatre characters: 32
  • Poetry characters: 19
  • Science Fiction characters: 46
  • Fantasy characters: 83
  • Novel characters: 324
  • Children's lit characters: 19
  • Characters in legends: 6
There is of course some overlap, and I haven't figured out where the other 250 or so are hiding, but:
Well, I think that {{novel-char-stub}} would be useful, because the other fictional character stubs are divided by medium (animation, comics, film, etc.) {{Theat-char-stub}} might also be useful, as it would be more specific (such as for characters from Shakespeare and Cats, some of which are currently using {{lit-char-stub}}). But I think that {{fantasy-char-stub}} is unnecessary, as it is too broad and could possibly include characters from more than one medium. Fortdj33 (talk) 21:24, 4 December 2012 (UTC)
I suggested fantasy because sf and MiddleEarth existed, and because I thought potential editors might be more interested in genre than medium, when so many chars cross mediums but few cross genres. (In this sense 'comics' is almost more of a genre than a medium). But thinking further you are right that {{novel-char-stub}} would be useful, and easier to clearly define that fantasy. --Qetuth (talk) 22:38, 4 December 2012 (UTC)

Telephony stubs[edit]

I propose creation of {{telephony-stub}} and Category:Telephony stubs, the latter being a subcat of Category:Telecommunications stubs and Category:Telephony. The telecomm stubs category is much too large and needs to be split up. According to CatScan, there are about 200 telecomm stubs that could be put into the new stub category instead.[2] Category:Telephone number stubs should be made a subcategory of the new stub category; its template would be unchanged.--Srleffler (talk) 05:23, 15 August 2012 (UTC)

I'm not sure the distinction between telephony and telecommunications is clear enough to make this more than an arbitrary distinction to split a large category in half - looking at the telephony category tree, it seems very broad (and closer to 300 stubs when you add more depth to the search). But if we can't find a better option, maybe it'll have to do. --Qetuth (talk) 12:57, 17 August 2012 (UTC)
Telecommunications is a much broader category than telephony. Telecommunications includes broadcasting, particularly radio and television. It also includes data transmission, including the Internet and wireless networking. None of these things is "telephony". Splitting off telephony will take a big chunk out of the overpopulated telecomm stub category, but it is also a sensible way to divide the topic.--Srleffler (talk) 03:30, 18 August 2012 (UTC)
Based upon the permcats, it looks good to me. SeveroTC 10:30, 21 August 2012 (UTC)
Most of these things are already split off: we have Category:Broadcasting stubs, Category:Television stubs, Category:Radio stubs, Category:Internet stubs, Category:Wireless stubs as subcats already. But point taken... --Qetuth (talk) 11:39, 25 August 2012 (UTC)
Yes, although note that the TV and radio stub categories you listed are not going to be the most appropriate sub-stubs for most things that might otherwise be in Category:Telecommunications stubs. The correct stubs would more often be {{tv-tech-stub}} and {{radio-comm-stub}}. Given that those stubs already exist, a stub for telephony seemed like the next most reasonable choice for subdividing the content. I don't see any other good options for new sub-stubs.--Srleffler (talk) 20:05, 25 August 2012 (UTC)

This proposal has been sitting for a while. I still think this makes sense, and I think I have adequately answered the concerns raised above. Could someone close this? Is it possible to have a bot change the stub tags: any page with {{Telecomm-stub}} that is in Category:Telephony should be changed to {{telephony-stub}}. That seems like a better task for a bot than a human editor. This change provides a sensible division of content, and breaks up the overly-large telecomm-stub category.--Srleffler (talk) 02:31, 8 July 2013 (UTC)
