On this WP:WSS subpage, you can propose new stub types (please read the procedures beforehand!), as well as the reorganization and subdivision of existing stub types. You can also discuss anything else related to stubs on the talk page.

Proposing new stub types – procedure[edit]

Important: If you wish to propose the creation of a stub ARTICLE you've come to the wrong place. If you don't have a username yourself, please go to WP:AFC for proposing a new article. If you already have a username, you can create the article yourself. If you don't know how, add {{Helpme}} to your user talk page to request help from other editors. This page only deals with stub TEMPLATES and CATEGORIES; we cannot help you with creating articles.

Proposing new stub types
If you wish to propose a new stub category and template, please follow these procedures:
  1. Check the List of stub types or under Category:Stub categories to make sure that your proposed new stub does not already exist.
  2. List it at the top of the current month's section, under a header, like the ones shown (if any). Sign it with a datestamp (~~~~).
    • Please bear in mind that a stub category isn't about the importance or notability of the topic!
  3. Find a good number[1] of stub articles, as many as you can, that will fit that template. You may use this tool to scan through categories. Each of these articles can be:
    • currently marked with {{stub}};
    • currently marked with another type of stub tag (in which case you should justify why your tag is better for the article than the current one);
    • a stub whose categorisation is highly ambiguous or questionable;
    • not marked as a stub.
  4. If you use any category scan (from the tool mentioned above or from any other), please link to it so that other users can confirm that the results are still accurate.
  5. Others may do the same, if they so desire.
  6. 5 days after listing it here, if there is general approval or no objection, go ahead and create the new category and/or template following the format on Wikipedia:Stub. List the new stub type on the stub types list in an appropriate section. If consensus is not clear, or discussion is still ongoing, the proposal will remain open until consensus can be reached.
  7. If you wish to propose a stub type which does not currently have 60 articles that could use it, you may propose an upmerged template in a similar way. An upmerged template would feed into currently existing stub categories until such time that there are enough stubs for a separate stub category. At that point a category for it may be separately proposed.

DO NOT place a proposal here for any stub type which has already been created and is being discussed at Wikipedia:WikiProject Stub sorting/Discoveries or Wikipedia:Categories for discussion. The proposal page is only for stub types that have not yet been created, and it is better to keep any discussion of such stub types in one place rather than splitting it between different pages. Wikipedia:Categories for discussion is the correct page for proposals to delete a stub type.

^ . Good number means about 60 articles or more, or 30 or more if it is the primary stub type of a WikiProject, though this figure may vary from case to case.

"Speedy creation"[edit]

A stub type may be proposed for "speedy creation" if it meets one of the following criteria:

  • S1 - the creation of a category for which an approved upmerged template already exists and is now in use on more than 60 articles.
  • S2 - the creation of an upmerged national-level template for a subject in which other such national-level templates currently exist (e.g., X-bio-stub, X-hist-stub, or X-geo-stub, where X is the name of an internationally widely recognised country) or other instances where a clearly established pattern of similar subtypes exists. The proposed topic may not be controversial in scope. Many templates qualifying for S2 are listed at Wikipedia:WikiProject Stub sorting/To do/To create.

List speedy creation proposals in the same proposal listings as normal stub proposals below.

April 2014[edit]

Category:Italian painter stubs sub category[edit]

Since we have 15th-18th century birth stubs subcategories, I propose having Category:Italian painter, 19th century birth stubs‎. I don't have an exact number for all the years, but using Cat Scan reveals that 75 painters were born from 1801-1820. I can provide a link if needed. MrLinkinPark333 (talk) 23:24, 19 April 2014 (UTC)

Category:Figure skating biography stubs sub-categories[edit]

Proposing new figure skating sub-categories.

Also there is a bunch of other countries with 20+ relevant stubs, yet Category:Ukrainian figure skating biography stubs has 17 articles - why is there this inconsistent number limit? Thanks, Kirin13 (talk) 18:45, 18 April 2014 (UTC)

Okay - that makes sense in why it was created ... but why is it okay to retain categories of under 20 if we don't allow creation of categories of 30? Looking at Category:European figure skating biography stubs there is 467 articles there. Wouldn't it be better organization (& easier for less experienced editors) if we took out the countries that have 20/30/x articles and gave them their country category. I understand why we wouldn't want to do this everywhere, but with sports, we have a pretty established categorization system so if there is x number of articles, why not split? Why have the magic number be 60? Also, when countries are in the upmerged category, they get intermixed, unlike countries who have their own category. Why don't we at least sort by country if they are in the upmerged category? Sorry if I'm asking stupid questions, I'm still learning. Thanks, Kirin13 (talk) 20:52, 18 April 2014 (UTC)
Sorry, more questions. 1) Using S2, does the 60 article requirement apply? If not, what rules apply? 2) Since 'speedy support' does that mean I can create category now or should I wait five days? Besides creating category, what else must be done? Is there a fast way to edit category in 60+ articles? Thanks, Kirin13 (talk) 23:01, 18 April 2014 (UTC)
S2 is for templates, but {{Austria-figure-skating-bio-stub}} and {{Switzerland-figure-skating-bio-stub}} already exist. However, you're asking for categries, which are S1, so it's a 60-article threshold for creation of the cat. Action to take is to edit the two stub templates (use {{Germany-figure-skating-bio-stub}} as a guide), then create the two categories (use Category:German figure skating biography stubs as a guide). Then updateWikipedia:WikiProject Stub sorting/Stub types/Sports#By sport (use the existing entry for Germany as a guide). --Redrose64 (talk) 09:08, 19 April 2014 (UTC)

Category:1930s British film stubs splitting[edit]

Hi there. Since this category has over 800 articles, I suggest splitting this category by year. A quick search in the category reveals:

Category:1931 British film stubs [2] 65

Category:1932 British film stubs [3] 73

Category:1933 British film stubs [4] 89

Category:1934 British film stubs [5] 91

Category:1935 British film stubs [6] 88

Category:1936 British film stubs [7] 130

Category:1937 British film stubs [8] 114

Category:1938 British film stubs [9] 74

I also wish to propose an upmerged template for the following years:

Category:1930 British film stubs [1] 53

Category:1939 British film stubs [10] 50

With these categories, the backlog for this category would be greatly reduced. MrLinkinPark333 (talk) 20:18, 17 April 2014 (UTC)

Do we have any existing stub cats or templates that drill down to a specific year? How about subdividing by genre instead? That way, they could be subcats of e.g. Category:1930s comedy film stubs, etc. --Redrose64 (talk) 22:35, 17 April 2014 (UTC)
That could work. If splitting by genres works better, than I'll support that decision instead. MrLinkinPark333 (talk) 02:51, 18 April 2014 (UTC)

Category:New Zealand people stubs[edit]

Wonder if anyone here remembers me after all this time...

{{NewZealand-reli-bio-stub}} is now used on some 70 articles, and there are a heap more simply marked with {{NewZealand-bio-stub}} which could use it too. Enough for a Category:New Zealand religious biography stubs, I'd say.

If you're looking for further ways to split that oversized bio category, I'd think a {{NewZealand-crime-bio-stub}} would float - there seem to be quite a lot of police officers, prison staff, judges, and criminals in the bio category.

Also - and this is a far trickier one - you could remove a couple of hundred of the NZ bio-stubs in one fell swoop by making some form of Maori tribal leader stub. {{Māori-bio-stub}} is a bit too general, but perhaps {{Māori-leader-stub}} (with a redirect without the macron) would be very useful. Unfortunately, there's no equivalent permcat (Category:Tohunga is too specific), and Māori are divided primarily by their iwi (tribes). Any suggestions? Grutness...wha? 13:13, 12 April 2014 (UTC) (PS - I'm just passing through, not back here full-time!)

Reli category made - currently with 85 stubs and growing fast. Grutness...wha? 01:42, 19 April 2014 (UTC)
crime bio template made - and now on 61 articles... juuust enough to speedy the category. Grutness...wha? 08:17, 19 April 2014 (UTC)

Category:Aviation stubs[edit]

In light of the increasing integration of complex airplane systems, active development of related standards, and the hundreds of pages in the Category:Aviation stubs, I propose Template:Avionics-stub and Template:Avionics-software-stub which could also be associated, respectively with Category:Electronics stubs and Category:Software stubs. Some present stubs I would re-categorize:

Future Airborne Capability Environment
AIDS (aeronautics)
Built-in test equipment
Flight computer
Flight information display system
Operational display system
Stick shaker

Hong Kong people stubs[edit]

There are a couple categories in Category:Hong Kong people stubs, which are too specific to meet the threshold. I propose creating:

Fortdj33 (talk) 17:43, 7 April 2014 (UTC)

Category:United States museum stubs split[edit]

I propose splitting Category:United States museum stubs to tags (and categories where at least 60 are present) by state and categories by region (as we have for Category:United States building and structure stubs anbd some of its subcats) - the category is already above 500, and that's excluding the one state which has its own stub category - Florida. עוד מישהו Od Mishehu 04:13, 4 April 2014 (UTC)

Proposals, March 2014[edit]

Category:Human migration stubs [edit]

I suggest creating this category, it's a really important topic and it hasn't got a category yet. 15:00, 29 March 2014

If you look at WP:WSS/P#Proposing new stub types – procedure, you'll see that it asks you to "find a good number of stub articles, as many as you can, that will fit that template"; so, what articles would you put in your proposed stub category? --Redrose64 (talk) 15:05, 29 March 2014 (UTC)
- This one, for example: Immigrant language — Preceding unsigned comment added by Darekkk (talkcontribs) 20:08, 29 March 2014‎
That's easily stub-sorted - {{Sociolinguistics-stub}} places it into Category:Linguistics stubs and Category:Sociology stubs. But that's just one - you really need 60. --Redrose64 (talk) 20:28, 29 March 2014 (UTC)

Category:2000s rock song stubs split[edit]

I propose splittting Category:2000s rock song stubs by decade:

With over 500 articles now, the category could approach thousands of articles by the end of the century. --Jax 0677 (talk) 23:51, 28 March 2014 (UTC)

It shouldn't need a split. Stub categories beginning "2000s" are always for a decade, not a century. --Redrose64 (talk) 00:00, 29 March 2014 (UTC)
I agree. If editors are adding the 2000s song stub into articles for 2010s songs, they are doing so incorrectly. Such songs that could be placed in the suggested stub template should be placed in both {{2010s-song-stub}} and {{rock-song-stub}}. When the number of song articles in both categories reach 60 (which I believe is the threshold), the 2010s-rock-song-stub can be created through proper procedures. --StarcheerspeaksnewslostwarsTalk to me 00:46, 29 March 2014 (UTC)
  • I'm not a regular here, but I know CfD. It seems to me that the 2010s rock song stub category is going to be needed and, as someone has created it, it should be retained now—all the more so, as the latest official specific rock song stub "2000s" is likely to be misunderstood by some inexperienced editors. – Fayenatic London 16:54, 29 March 2014 (UTC)
  • Reply - I agree with Fayenatic London on this one. Whether it is incorrect or not, inexperienced users who do not see a 2010s template available may use the 2000s template in its place, irrespective of whether it is correct. If other decades from the 20th century have required this, I am almost certain that decades in the 21st century will require it as well. --Jax 0677 (talk) 18:00, 29 March 2014 (UTC)
The normal process at WSS/P is that we create a decade-specific category when there is a demonstrable need, and not speculatively. Very few stub cats exist for centuries; in fact the only one that I know of is Category:20th-century play stubs and of its ten decades, six have their own subcategories, the other four upmerge. --Redrose64 (talk) 18:06, 29 March 2014 (UTC)
Comment While splitting is the wrong proposal here, I took it upon myself to diffuse Category:Rock song stubs, populating Category:2010s rock song stubs to 70 stub articles. I'm sure further digging within Category:2010s song stubs and Category:2000s rock song stubs will find more candidates for inclusion. --StarcheerspeaksnewslostwarsTalk to me 03:01, 3 April 2014 (UTC)

Category:New York City building and structure stubs split[edit]

I propose splittting Category:New York City building and structure stubs by borough:

Jazz composition templates by decade[edit]

We currently have {{jazz-composition-stub}} but I think it makes sense to have:

Category:Jazz composition stubs has 325 articles, I think some of them could be split by decade, what d'ya think?♦ Dr. Blofeld 10:37, 27 March 2014 (UTC)

Suggestion: first start with upmerged templates, then let's see if any of them deserves a separate category. Regards, --Fadesga (talk) 01:59, 28 March 2014 (UTC)
I agree with Fadesga - just do it and create the category for any decade once you pass 60 for it. עוד מישהו Od Mishehu 04:52, 28 March 2014 (UTC)

Category:San Francisco Bay Area building and structure stubs[edit]

Category:Disease stubs split[edit]

Speedy request. Would like subcategories for this huge category. Propose Category:Circulatory disease stubs, Category:Nervous system disease stubs, Category:Musculoskeletal disease stubs and Category:Respiratory disease stubs. The templates are already present and upmerged to the Disease stubs category.

Thanks! EricEnfermero HOWDY! 13:00, 23 March 2014 (UTC)

Category:Wyoming building and structure stubs[edit]

I thiml we should create Category:Wyoming building and structure stub - this would include 2 {{Wyoming-struct-stub}}s, 28 {{Wyoming-bridge-struct-stub}}s, 25 {{Wyoming-school-stub}}s, 6 {{Wyoming-sports-venue-stub}}s, 4 {{Wyoming-airport-stub}}, 4 {{Wyoming-railstation-stub}}, and 2 {{Wyoming-hospital-stub}}s - a total of 71. עוד מישהו Od Mishehu 04:04, 23 March 2014 (UTC)

Category:Hawaii building and structure stubs[edit]

I think we should create Category:Hawaii building and structure stubs - in addition to the 31 articles populating Category:Hawaii school stubs (an obvious child of the proposed category, although whether or not it should exist is a separate question), we have 21 {{Hawaii-struct-stub}}s, 5 {{Hawaii-sports-venue-stub}}s, 2 {{Hawaii-hospital-stub}}s, and 1 each of {{Hawaii-airport-stub}}, {{Hawaii-bridge-struct-stub}} and {{Hawaii-hotel-stub}} - a total of 63 stubs. עוד מישהו Od Mishehu 22:01, 22 March 2014 (UTC)

Category:American tunnel stubs[edit]

Category:United States hospital stubs split[edit]

Category:Norwegian tunnel stubs[edit]

Category:Croatian actor stubs[edit]

Category:Manhattan railway station stubs[edit]

Category:New York City railway station stubs has passed 200 stubhs already. The only viable child stub category, at this point, would be Category:Manhattan railway station stubs/{{Manhattan-railstation-stub}} - although I can't do a scan right noiw, I know that all the contents of the permcat (100 articles), other than 4 (all from Category:Railroad terminals in New York City - Penn, an older station by the same name, Grand Cenral, and Hudson Terminal), are stubs. עוד מישהו Od Mishehu 13:38, 9 March 2014 (UTC)

Category:Italian Roman Catholic clergy stubs[edit]

I have just created the upmerged {{Italy-RC-clergy-stub}}, included both in the Category:Italian religious biography stubs and in the Category:Roman Catholic clergy stubs. Further looking into this scan (74 stubs), maybe it could be a good idea to create a special Category:Italian Roman Catholic clergy stubs. What do you say? Category created. --Fadesga (talk) 23:31, 20 March 2014 (UTC)

Category:Los Angeles, California building and structure stubs[edit]

Category:Texas railway station stubs[edit]

Category:Dallas Area Rapid Transit stubs[edit]

I propose Category:Dallas Area Rapid Transit stubs/{{DART-stub}} - a quick scan finds 63 stubs. Note that the use of abbreviation for the tag and the full name for the category already exists for other systems - e.g Category:Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority stubs/{{MBTA-stub}}. עוד מישהו Od Mishehu 16:03, 2 March 2014 (UTC)

Category:Indian newspaper stubs[edit]

There are 170 stubs related to Indian newspapers (see this scan). Accordingly I propose the creation of the Category:Indian newspaper stubs. Regards, --Fadesga (talk) 14:35, 24 February 2014 (UTC)

Category:Media book stubs[edit]

I propose the creation of a Category:Media book stubs for books about the media - see this scan: 231 stubs. There are already 60 of them at the Category:Film book stubs, but this leaves over 170 stubs for the proposed category. Regards, --Fadesga (talk) 17:18, 20 February 2014 (UTC)

Category:San Francisco, California building and structure stubs[edit]

I propose {{SanFrancisco-struct-stub}}/Category:San Francisco, California building and structure stubs - While many of the 363 stubs in this scan wouldn't belong there, we could probably find at least 10 not in this scan of 50 (just railway stations). עוד מישהו Od Mishehu 06:40, 19 February 2014 (UTC)

Those that are railway stations ought to have {{California-railstation-stub}}, if they don't already. That populates Category:California railway station stubs which is a subcat of Category:California building and structure stubs --Redrose64 (talk) 16:48, 19 February 2014 (UTC)

Category: KT Red[edit]

I propose the creation of Template:KT-Red-stub (popular social figure). KT Red is a model/actress based in Atlanta and has been featured on numerous television networks and film projects. She is a very well-known figure in the local area, as well as across the states. Her already notable momentum of success continues to increase as she is constantly shooting new projects, ranging from magazine covers and calendars to playing a minor suspect in J Lo's new movie, the dancer kidnapped by Travis Porter on The Game, or a recurring character on Single Ladies, Drop Dead Diva, and Devious Maids. She is also a recording artist with a life-changing story of overcoming solitude and abandonment. Thanks, OfficialKTred 09:26, 11 February 2014 (UTC)

@OfficialKTred: It sounds like you're proposing creation of an article for KT Red. Per WP:WSS/P#Proposing new stub types – procedure, if you wish to propose the creation of a stub article you've come to the wrong place. This page only deals with stub templates and categories; we cannot help you with creating articles. You can go to WP:AFC for proposing a new article; or if you feel confident, you can create the article yourself. Category:Bus stubs split[edit]

I propose splitting Category:Bus stubs - I see that the United States has 256 stubs tagged under this category and its subcats, and the UK has 83 stubs - both enough for {{US-bus-stub}}/Category:United States bus stubs and {{UK-bus-stub}}Category:United Kingdom bus stubs. I think we should also use multiple-upmerged stub tags for the eventual subcats - {{US-bus-station-stub}}, {{US-bus-company-stub}}, and {{UK-bus-station-stub}}. עוד מישהו Od Mishehu 05:48, 11 February 2014 (UTC)

Hi there. I have seen through the Category:Bus stubs and it is indeed very heterogeneous in content, there are bus models, lines, companies, systems, etc. I suggest that a more sensible, wide-ranging approach could be (by comparison with Category:Rail transport stubs): let's consider the creation of a Category:Bus transport stubs, in order to include all the stubs related to the generic topic "buses". The existing Category:Bus stubs could be considered as a sub-category of the new one, and reserved only for "buses proper" (I mean: stub articles currently included under the Category:Buses, of which a scan shows 195). Then, create some subcategories by country, for instance, Category:United States bus transport stubs and Category:United Kingdom bus transport stubs (each of them with the corresponding upmerged stub tags, etc.). Regards, --Fadesga (talk) 13:51, 14 February 2014 (UTC)
By the way, it's Category:United States bus transportation stubs because of ENGVAR - see base category Category:Transportation in the United States. עוד מישהו Od Mishehu 15:53, 18 February 2014 (UTC)

Category:Geography book stubs[edit]

There is the {{Geo-book-stub}} upmerged in the Category:Science book stubs. Looking into this scan, there are more than 80 geography book stubs. I propose the creation of the Category:Geography book stubs. Regards, --Fadesga (talk) 15:42, 8 February 2014 (UTC)

No objections expressed, category created. --Fadesga (talk) 14:00, 18 February 2014 (UTC)

Split of Category:United States bridge (structure) stubs[edit]

Category:San Francisco Bay Area railway station stubs[edit]

I propose creating Category:San Francisco Bay Area railway station stubs, which will include the following:

By my count, this would include 80 stubs+1 subcat with 63 - plenty for a category. Note that the parent category, Category:California railway station stubs, is slightly above 200 now. עוד מישהו Od Mishehu 14:28, 5 February 2014 (UTC)

Laotian sport stubs[edit]

I propose the creation of the Category:Laotian sport stubs. It could include the templates {{Laos-sport-stub}}, {{Laos-footyclub-stub}}, {{Laos-footy-competition-stub}}, {{Laos-sports-venue-stub}} and other related. The corresponding scan gives 99 stubs. Regards, --Fadesga (talk) 18:48, 4 February 2014 (UTC)

{{Laos-sport-stub}} has 27 transclusions; {{Laos-footyclub-stub}} has 13; {{Laos-footy-competition-stub}} has 23; {{Laos-sports-venue-stub}} has 7, for a total of 70. Not sure where you get the extra 29 from. However, I do believe that taken together, this meets WP:WSS/P#"Speedy creation" S1. --Redrose64 (talk) 20:11, 4 February 2014 (UTC)
Category created; sportspeople-related stubs added as well. Regards, --Fadesga (talk) 01:26, 5 February 2014 (UTC)

Proposals, January 2014[edit]

Split of Category:United States rail transportation stubs[edit]

I propose splitting Category:United States rail transportation stubs by state - giving each state a tag and, where there are at least 60 stubs, a category. I aslso propose that we split the country into 4 regions (as we already do for other stub category types, including the child Category:United States railway station stubs). עוד מישהו Od Mishehu 09:53, 3 February 2014 (UTC)

I see that many of the 723 pages concern railroad companies. I expect that quite a few of these crossed state lines; is the intention to apply two or more stub templates (one per state traversed) to these? --Redrose64 (talk) 11:08, 3 February 2014 (UTC)
Many of these referf to lines or companies within a single state. And anything which mainly belongs to a single state, but crosses state lines, I thinik should also be tagged for that state. Of about a dozen I sampled, only one crosses state lines. עוד מישהו Od Mishehu 04:27, 5 February 2014 (UTC)

Category:Washington DC politician stubs[edit]

The WashingtonDC-politician-stub was proposed back in 2010 ... and these stub articles don't show up in the Category:Washington, D.C. stubs now, as if they don't exist. What happened? Djembayz (talk) 22:41, 2 February 2014 (UTC)

Please note that the cat proposed was Category:Washington DC politician stubs, not Category:WashingtonDC-politician-stub. As to what happened, the proposal was that the cat should be created at 60+ articles; but presently, {{WashingtonDC-politician-stub}} is used on 41 pages (not all are articles, either). --Redrose64 (talk) 00:14, 3 February 2014 (UTC)
Thanks for explanation. Do we repost when it gets to 60 articles? Djembayz (talk) 14:17, 6 February 2014 (UTC)

German football stub templates[edit]

Speedy proposal. German footballers stubs are split into both position and decade, but these three upmerged templates are missing.

Mentoz (talk) 21:22, 30 January 2014 (UTC)

How many pages will these be used on? How are they stubbed at the moment? I take it that the intention is to have upmerged categories like {{Germany-footy-defender-1880s-stub}}/{{Germany-footy-defender-1900s-stub}}/{{Germany-footy-midfielder-1880s-stub}}/{{Germany-footy-midfielder-1890s-stub}}/{{Germany-footy-midfielder-1900s-stub}}/{{Germany-footy-forward-1900s-stub}}. --Redrose64 (talk) 22:30, 30 January 2014 (UTC)
Of the articles that are currently stub-sorted with {{Germany-footy-defender-stub}} or {{Germany-footy-forward-stub}}, there are approx 5-8 articles that will fit in each of the proposed templates, but there are more than 900 articles that use {{Germany-footy-bio-stub}}, so I guess it can be used on some more. Category:Arctiidae stubs split[edit]

Category:Arctiidae stubs is well over 3000 articles, and the permanent itself is similarly oversized. Splitting this category into subfamilies results in two oversized subfamilies. There are a few genera that could support a category of their own, but I would propose a tribe-level split to help tame these categories. Propose all of the following templates, with categories for any that pass the 60 article barrier. My intent is to also build similar tribe-level permanent categories.

Category already exists with 100+ entries, but there's no stub-type (, which essentially leaves out a whole continent of cinema. It seems you copy-pasted a category page into {{Italy-painter-19thC-stub}}, but I fixed it into an upmerged template. I'm wondering though if upmerged templates like that needs another category than Category:Italian painter stubs. I see the 19th century stub-template now is used on 17 articles, I don't see the point of having templates for every century BC, so you should find a reasonable number of stubs for each template, even if there are upmerged. Category:Universalism stubs[edit]

Request, to pick up {{Universalism-stub}}. (32 P) --Devin Murphy (talk) 20:39, 13 April 2013 (UTC)

  • Oppose - only 31 transclusions, not the stub category for a WikiProject. עוד מישהו Od Mishehu 13:44, 14 April 2013 (UTC)
  • Weak oppose - It could, potentially, be a stub category for the Unitarian Universalism work group, but there is already a stub category for Category:Unitarian Universalism stubs which has only 34 articles. I don't know how many additional articles might be creatable based on the list at Wikipedia:WikiProject Religion/Unitarian Universalism work group/Encyclopedic articles, because it doesn't differentiate between Unitarian, Universalism, and Unitarian Universalism, but I think it might make more sense to create some of the missing articles relevant to universalism first. John Carter (talk) 22:20, 14 April 2013 (UTC)
  • There has been a wrench thrown into this proposal by User:Fadesga. Fadesga has removed {{Universalism-stub}} from the Universalist related biography subs that I had put it on and created {{Universalism-bio-stub}} and put it on the Universalist related biography subs instead. Their rationale for this change is this; "the Category:Religion stubs is overpopulated, while the Category:Religious biography stubs is underpopulated". Now {{Universalism-stub}} is only used on 4 stubs. I wonder how this will impact this proposal? --Devin Murphy (talk) 21:47, 19 April 2013 (UTC)
  • A different proposal. I have been looking at these stub templates, that seem to be related to each other:
  • {{UnitarianUniversalism-stub}} with 36 stubs (and they have their own, too small, stub category),
  • {{Unitarianism-stub}} with 25 stubs (and they also have their own, too small, stub category)
  • {{Universalism-stub}} + the directly related {{Universalism-bio-stub}}, together there are 32 stubs (and Devin Murphy is proposing a category).
My proposal is somehow different. Given the fact that there are already two underpopulated categories, I am thinking about some kind of redistribution. (Further looking at other related categories, I see that there is an existing {{Unitarian, Universalist and Unitarian Universalist topics}}). Instead of having each template a separate category, there could be an "umbrella" stub category taking up all of them; or an alternative, using transcluded templates:
My 2 cents... --Fadesga (talk) 12:03, 21 April 2013 (UTC)
  • Category:Universalism stubs would be under my proposal a subcategory of Category:Universalism. I am proposing that all articles marked {{Universalism-stub}} and {{Universalism-bio-stub}} be put into this new category. I am making this proposal as a way to list all the Universalisim stub artistic separately from the Unitarian Universalism ones in the same manner as is done with the Unitarianism subs using Category:Unitarianism stubs. I feel this is a good thing to do as it helps folks who would like to work on only one of these arias and not all three of them to have an easy way to do this. I am open though to alliterative ways to achieve this. --Devin Murphy (talk) 17:34, 29 June 2013 (UTC)

Languages spoken by country stubs[edit]

Hi fellow Wikipedians. I am looking at the Category:Nigeria stubs. It looks like there are too many language-related stubs in each of them. I have just created the submerged template {{Nigeria-lang-stub}} which would eventually help de-populate the already big Category:Nigeria stubs. So, my proposal is to create a Category:Language stubs by country, which would include all eventual country-specific language stub categories. What do you say? Regards, --Fadesga (talk) 18:17, 14 March 2013 (UTC)

Do not support. In this case, consider this one vote. I'm frankly concerned about how to interpret "language spoken in Nigeria". I'll use an example from my experience: English is the only official language in the USA. But many companies hire people that speak fluent Spanish, because of the need to communicate with immigrants from Central and South America. Because Spanish has become so prevalent in the US, I could approve an argument that Spanish is spoken in the USA. But, take it a step further. There are conclaves of many different language groups especially in larger cities. Is it fair to say that Chinese or Korean is a language spoken in the USA just because a few neighborhoods might retain the language of their homeland? Do we say that French is "spoken" in the US, just because a large number of schools teach French classes, even though the language is not prevalently used in day-to-day activities? Thus, I find it dangerous first to say what languages are or are not "spoken" in a given country.
Beyond this, I have my doubts that we'll be able to create a need for a "Language stubs by country". Consider: How many countries really have more than 60 languages prevalently in use? For each of those, how many of the languages would be a) documented but b) documented only by stub articles on this English wikipedia? Dawynn (talk) 14:00, 18 March 2013 (UTC)
Just looking at the articles tagged with {{Nigeria-stub}}, and see that there are a lot of language articles for Nigeria. Please wait for other opinions. My naïveté may not be the last word on this subject. Dawynn (talk) 14:08, 18 March 2013 (UTC)

Our geography stubs use preserved counties, which seems strange to me, but I think geo and struct trees shouldn't be using different subdivision styles if avoidable. I'm not sure there is yet reason to split at all, with 172 articles in the main category over 22 counties coming out with less than 8 avg per tag, and churches an easy split-off if needed. --Qetuth (talk) 04:39, 6 January 2013 (UTC)

@Qetuth: You state "our geography stubs use preserved counties, which seems strange to me, but I think geo and struct trees shouldn't be using different subdivision styles if avoidable" - I've checked, and although preserved counties are used for the stub cats, the stub templates are all named after the Principal areas of Wales, and that seems to be the scheme requested by Dr. Blofeld here. --Redrose64 (talk) 14:20, 27 March 2014 (UTC)
Support (disclosure: I've been asked about this by Dr. Blofeld at User talk:Redrose64#A barnstar for you!) I don't have any objection, but I do have some observations. First, I think that we should hold off on creating the county categories; they can all upmerge to Category:Welsh building and structure stubs until there are sufficient pages using each template. Second, I would like the names to be consistent with those used to populate subcats of Category:Wales geography stubs - at present there are two discrepancies: {{MerthyrTydfil-struct-stub}} is suggested above, but the existing -geo- template is {{Merthyr-geo-stub}}; {{BlaenauGwent-struct-stub}} is suggested above, but there is no {{BlaenauGwent-geo-stub}}. --Redrose64 (talk) 14:18, 27 March 2014 (UTC)

Thanks. Yes for some counties at present there might be half a dozen at present max, but I intended creating a few stubs on Grade I listed buildings. If you consider that the Vale of Glamorgan alone has over 700 listed buildings I can assure that there will be plenty of stubs by county to make it worthwhile! Its just quite a few times I've created a stub and been surprised that Powys-struct-stub for example didn't exist!♦ Dr. Blofeld 14:25, 27 March 2014 (UTC)

Minor point: they should have dashs not spaces before stub. I know Victoria (Australia) gets stub tagged as VictoriaAU, so maybe append ES when it's needed? After checking, it looks like we do that already for {{LaRiojaES-geo-stub}} but thre is no prior Guadalajara stub tag as it is covered by {{CastileLaMancha-geo-stub}}. I notice this list is a lot more extensive than the geography categories, eg A Coruna, Lugo etc are grouped under {{Galicia-geo-stub}}, and many others are similarly collected by autonomous community rather than province. I don't know how many articles you are making, but it would currently average less than 10 articles per province. Is a full by province split the best idea when it is already largely split by building type (and Catalonia), or would by Autonomous community to match the geography cats do the job better? --Qetuth (talk) 04:12, 6 January 2013 (UTC)
Do you think I'd have proposed this if the intention wasn't to dramatically populate them?♦ Dr. ☠ Blofeld 22:22, 17 January 2013 (UTC)

Jewish People stubs[edit]

This stub would encompass groups/people who are ethnic Jews or Jewish by descent. It would include the categories Jews, Jewish diaspora, People of Jewish descent, Ashkenazi Jews, Sephardic Jews, Samaritans, and all of the sub-categories within those. I don't know how to make stubs, so please bear with me if I'm not doing this right.Evildoer187 (talk) 03:14, 24 December 2012 (UTC)

How does this differ from {{Judaism-bio-stub}} (which categorises to Category:Jewish biography stubs)? --Redrose64 (talk) 14:30, 24 December 2012 (UTC)
That stub only encompasses people who are religiously Jewish. This stub would include people who are Jewish by descent.Evildoer187 (talk) 02:06, 25 December 2012 (UTC)
We don't stub sort people by ethnic descent and I don't think it's a good idea or remotely useful to start doing so. Severo (talk) 02:49, 25 December 2012 (UTC)
What are you talking about? There are stubs for people of Irish descent, Polish descent, Iraqi descent, Romani descent, etc. What's the difference here?Evildoer187 (talk) 03:53, 25 December 2012 (UTC)
There aren't any 'people by descent' stub categories, that I am aware of. We have a Category:Romani stubs, but this is for Romani culture in general, not for people of Romani descent. Generally, unlike permcats, stub tags are only applied for a persons single defining feature that leads to them having a wikipedia article. So categories like descent, year of birth, town grew up in, band a member of, etc shouldn't have stub equivalents. People are primarily sorted on occupation, and secondarily by nationality - ideally, nationality would just be how the occupations are subdivided, but in practice, some occupations are rare, or rare in a country, or hard to define, so this leads to further use of the base nationality bio tags. So people who's occupation or mark on history is religious, may be sorted by religion, but others would not, just as sportspeople might be sorted by sport or politicians by party. --Qetuth (talk) 11:20, 25 December 2012 (UTC)
You're missing my point. The current stub is restricted to Jews who are religious eg. rabbis. My proposed stub 'Jewish people' would include them, and those who are ethnically Jewish but not necessarily religious eg. Noam Chomsky, Jerry Seinfeld, etc. Think Romani stubs, which you linked to, but with Jewish people and not Romani.Evildoer187 (talk) 09:50, 27 December 2012 (UTC)
That's exactly the point though, we don't sort people by ethnic or cultural background and I don't think it would be useful to anyone to create such stub types and categories. Severo (talk) 13:05, 27 December 2012 (UTC)
Then why is there a Romani stub page?Evildoer187 (talk) 08:45, 28 December 2012 (UTC)
As I type this, Category:Romani stubs has 81 members in article space. Of those, 20 are biographies: not a high proportion. The bulk of the stubs in the category (over 75%) deal with Romani language, culture, history and so on, and are not biographical.
The biogs appear to fall into two types: (i) people who are significant for being Romani, and (ii) people who have become significant from some academic/musical/sporting/etc. achievement that also happen to be Romani. Those in the latter group - and perhaps those in the former group as well - should perhaps be given s stub category relevent to academia/music/sport/etc. rather than the Romani one. --Redrose64 (talk) 14:08, 28 December 2012 (UTC)

To carry {{poli-bio-stub}}, {{HK-poli-stub}} and {{HK-bio-stub}}, for political scientists, social activists, people appointed to serve as non-official members of LegCo, ExCo, UrbCo, district councils, etc., and people appointed to serve as non-executive heads or members of quangos. These people aren't politicians. (And in HK the word "government" refers almost exclusively to the executive branch, which includes only government secretaries (i.e. ministers) and civil servants.) Not done: New stub templates should be proposed at Wikipedia:WikiProject Stub sorting/Proposals and once approved there, may be created. --Redrose64 (talk) 17:17, 16 December 2012 (UTC)

It would also be good to rename/rescope {{KCR-stub}} to {{HongKong-rail-transport-stub}} - the Peak Tram articles do not appear to be KCR or MTR, and KCR is too small atopic to have its own stub tag --Qetuth (talk) 03:47, 21 December 2012 (UTC)
  • The problem is that these people, who are mostly political scientists, social activists, appointed people, etc., aren't working within the government, nor are they politicians. That's why they ended up with {{poli-bio-stub}}. Further, I'm not proposing any new stub categories for these articles, but only a template to feed them into existing categories.
As for KCR and the Peak Tram, I'd suggest to keep them as they are for the time being. It could be bit complicated, since all KCR stations, tracks, and all facilities are still owned by their previous operator, the KCR Corporation. There are also things that were scrapped before the operation concession was granted to the MTR Corporation Limited, e.g., old stations.
For media, shall we add {{HK-newspaper-stub}} to feed into both Category:Asian newspaper stubs and Category:Hong Kong media stubs? For musicians and singers, I actually found quite a few articles that weren't appropriate tagged. Those stub types are probably underutilised instead of undersized. Let's hang on and see. (talk) 11:39, 21 December 2012 (UTC)
I see your point about poli-bio-stub. For the music, I first noticed albums and musical groups were odd first-level children, and only after that noticed the undersizedness of the various music stubs. But it probably isn't needed. I threw a few newspaper stubs in media already, but didn't seem enough to need their own tag.
For the rail transport, my problem is that KCR only has 6 stub articles and is unlikely to grow, whereas there are clearly other rail transport stub articles which there is currently no stub for. The existence of the Peak Tram stations means I think a general rail tag is needed, and KCR is underused enogh I would have suggest deleting it if the rail one already existed to replace it with, so I tohught rescoping would solve both problems. --Qetuth (talk) 13:03, 21 December 2012 (UTC)
  • I'm working on and off to find out stubs that aren't already tagged with the appropriate Hong Kong singers/groups templates, and I'm quite sure that are still some. As for Hong Kong newspapers, again I'm not suggesting a new stub category, but a template to feed into existing categories.
As for rail transport, the problem is that there are very few other rail transport stub articles not already covered by the existing types to warrant a third stub template. The existing stub types may, nevertheless, split off stations (and stops) as a third type. (talk) 22:15, 21 December 2012 (UTC)

Literary character stubs[edit]

In sorting stub articles that are part of {{WikiProject Fictional characters}}, a lot of character stubs have been tagged with {{lit-char-stub}}, because many characters are introduced in books before they become film or TV characters. Consequently, Category:Literary character stubs is growing (currently 635 articles), but all of these stub articles are also part of {{WikiProject Novels}}, {{WikiProject Literature}} or {{WikiProject Children's literature}}. Since there is already a corresponding {{lit-char-stub}} and {{child-lit-char-stub}} for the latter two, I propose that a new stub tag be created, to better classify these articles, and differentiate the stubs for characters that came from novels. Any suggestions? Fortdj33 (talk) 17:10, 1 December 2012 (UTC)

Articles tagged by lit-char-stub by Catscan:
  • Theatre characters: 32
  • Poetry characters: 19
  • Science Fiction characters: 46
  • Fantasy characters: 83
  • Novel characters: 324
  • Children's lit characters: 19
  • Characters in legends: 6
There is of course some overlap, and I haven't figured out where the other 250 or so are hiding, but:
Well, I think that {{novel-char-stub}} would be useful, because the other fictional character stubs are divided by medium (animation, comics, film, etc.) {{Theat-char-stub}} might also be useful, as it would be more specific (such as for characters from Shakespeare and Cats, some of which are currently using {{lit-char-stub}}). But I think that {{fantasy-char-stub}} is unnecessary, as it is too broad and could possibly include characters from more than one medium. Fortdj33 (talk) 21:24, 4 December 2012 (UTC)
I suggested fantasy because sf and MiddleEarth existed, and because I thought potential editors might be more interested in genre than medium, when so many chars cross mediums but few cross genres. (In this sense 'comics' is almost more of a genre than a medium). But thinking further you are right that {{novel-char-stub}} would be useful, and easier to clearly define that fantasy. --Qetuth (talk) 22:38, 4 December 2012 (UTC)

Telephony stubs[edit]

I propose creation of {{telephony-stub}} and Category:Telephony stubs, the latter being a subcat of Category:Telecommunications stubs and Category:Telephony. The telecomm stubs category is much too large and needs to be split up. According to CatScan, there are about 200 telecomm stubs that could be put into the new stub category instead.[2] Category:Telephone number stubs should be made a subcategory of the new stub category; its template would be unchanged.--Srleffler (talk) 05:23, 15 August 2012 (UTC)

I'm not sure the distinction between telephony and telecommunications is clear enough to make this more than an arbitrary distinction to split a large category in half - looking at the telephony category tree, it seems very broad (and closer to 300 stubs when you add more depth to the search). But if we can't find a better option, maybe it'll have to do. --Qetuth (talk) 12:57, 17 August 2012 (UTC)
Telecommunications is a much broader category than telephony. Telecommunications includes broadcasting, particularly radio and television. It also includes data transmission, including the Internet and wireless networking. None of these things is "telephony". Splitting off telephony will take a big chunk out of the overpopulated telecomm stub category, but it is also a sensible way to divide the topic.--Srleffler (talk) 03:30, 18 August 2012 (UTC)
Based upon the permcats, it looks good to me. SeveroTC 10:30, 21 August 2012 (UTC)
Most of these things are already split off: we have Category:Broadcasting stubs, Category:Television stubs, Category:Radio stubs, Category:Internet stubs, Category:Wireless stubs as subcats already. But point taken... --Qetuth (talk) 11:39, 25 August 2012 (UTC)
Yes, although note that the TV and radio stub categories you listed are not going to be the most appropriate sub-stubs for most things that might otherwise be in Category:Telecommunications stubs. The correct stubs would more often be {{tv-tech-stub}} and {{radio-comm-stub}}. Given that those stubs already exist, a stub for telephony seemed like the next most reasonable choice for subdividing the content. I don't see any other good options for new sub-stubs.--Srleffler (talk) 20:05, 25 August 2012 (UTC)

This proposal has been sitting for a while. I still think this makes sense, and I think I have adequately answered the concerns raised above. Could someone close this? Is it possible to have a bot change the stub tags: any page with {{Telecomm-stub}} that is in Category:Telephony should be changed to {{telephony-stub}}. That seems like a better task for a bot than a human editor. This change provides a sensible division of content, and breaks up the overly-large telecomm-stub category.--Srleffler (talk) 02:31, 8 July 2013 (UTC)

{{longdistance-athletics-bio-stub}} / Category:Long-distance runner stubs[edit]

We already have Category:American long-distance runner stubs without a higher level generic category, or even template! Propose the template and category for gathering athletes from other countries. Given that we already have an American category, the generic category is needed for proper structure. I would think we should be able to fill it from the perm Category:Long-distance runners. Dawynn (talk) 01:19, 14 August 2012 (UTC)

Support --Qetuth (talk) 05:17, 15 August 2012 (UTC)
The history behind the American category is that it was passed 800 and the only split that seemed reasonable was by event, so we created templates for each event and split out those events that passed 60. Though I wouldn't !Vote against this, some reasons why I would be against this split, It would almost certainly lead to oversized category, It would lead to some athletes being categorized in here but not under there country and others vice-versa leading to confusion. Waacstats (talk) 17:31, 19 August 2012 (UTC)

Further split of language stubs[edit]

Some of the subcats of Category:language stubs have grown a little large. Propose the following sub-families:

Note that most of the top level families have initialised stub prefixes (eg {{nc-lang-stub}} for Niger-Congo stubs), but the existing subdivisions all then go to full names (eg {{WestChadic-lang-stub}}). As the four american families listed are all top level families, perhaps initials would be better for those? (mj- annd om- are obvious, not sure about the others) --Qetuth (talk) 07:54, 13 August 2012 (UTC)

Additional proposal to add to above: {{sign-lang-stub}} for the assorted sign language and manual alphabet stubs, double upmerged to Category:Deafness stubs. Category:Sign language stubs if 60 found. --Qetuth (talk) 08:08, 14 August 2012 (UTC)
