[edit] Purpose and goals
This project focuses on creating, improving and organizing content related to the subject of astrology in Wikipedia. Our goals include the improvement of articles on historical, technical, philosophical and theoretical issues involving astrology in different cultures and traditions, as well as its relation to other fields. The project will also work on improving the categorization of astrology-related articles.
[edit] General tasks
- Identify unmarked astrology-related stubs and expand them into full articles. See Articles in need of expansion below.
- Improve and refine existing astrology articles by drawing on reliable sources and academic works and citing them as sources. A good starting point is articles associated with the list of astrologers page.
- Identify and create missing astrology articles.
- Improve this page and make it more useful for potential astrology editors and project members.
- Invite active editors who write for astrology-related articles, history of science articles, or other applicable fields to join the project.
- Add all articles within the scope of this project to the Wikipedia:WikiProject Astrology/Articles page by category. See Templates.
- Improve the categorization and organization of astrological material.
- Gather interest and participation in an astrological community within Wikipedia.
- Maintain the Astrology portal.
- Watch articles within this project's recent changes, including improvements, vandalism, and other changes.
[edit] Current tasks
See the following subsections for information about current tasks, articles and issues that we are focusing on:
[edit] Members
If you are an active member of the project, or you have just joined and you plan on being an active member, then please add your name to the WikiProject Astrology member list.
[edit] Categorization and media
- Wikipedia: Monitor the broad astrology categories and keep them clean by replacing overly broad categories with more specific ones.
- Commons: Ensure that astrology related images are properly categorized, especially in relevant subcategories.
- Wikisource: Upload public domain content related to astrology and ensure that existing content is properly categorized.
[edit] Structure and content guidelines
| This section requires expansion. |
Articles on astrological signs (of the Zodiac) should contain an infobox with basic information about the sign.
The Latin name of the sign in Western astrology should be generally used. The name in English should be given, with the name in Arabic.
A solution needs to be found to allow for the varying dates of the ingresses of the Sun into each sign of the tropical zodiac and sidereal zodiac. One solution would to give a range of dates allowing for the earliest date on the Hawaii time zone to the latest date in New Zealand in each case.

[edit] Writing and editing
[edit] Articles in need of copyediting
- Arabian Parts; a lot has been done already but it is still in need of a fine-tooth combing. Also the name of the article needs to be fixed in accordance to article naming conventions.
- Electional astrology (NOTE: needs VERY heavy copyediting) - The article needs to be broken up into separate articles on electional astrology in different traditions. Right now it is mainly on Indian electional astrology, and most of this info needs to be in a specific page of its own.
- Islamic astrology
- Arab and Persian astrology
- Astrological symbols
- Egyptian astrology - article is in very bad shape with a bunch of bogus information. It basically needs a complete rewrite. We may need to enlist others that are more familiar with Egyptian history who are not astrologers.
- History of astrology - article is in deplorable condition. Needs a massive rewrite.
- Astrological Ages - the first major edit has been completed. Two additional sub-sections are required - The History of the Astrological Ages and Sub-Periods. Hopefully this will occur ASAP, see discussionn tab for further notes on editing the Astrological Ages.
[edit] Articles in need of expansion and cleanup
Zodiac sign articles are 'gateway' introductory articles for many people into astrology - they aren't looking good at the moment.
- Sept 2011 Upate; I've done some development of the pages for Aries (astrology), Taurus (astrology), Gemini (astrology), Virgo (astrology) and Sagittarius (astrology), so these pages are currently not too bad, although they could be expanded further with information, say, on historical origins (rather than mythology), or more detailed analysis of significations not covered. I have tried to bring consistency of content across the pages and hope to update the other pages in a similar fashion as time allows. Any help will be greatly appreciated. If anyone is willing to copy the format and work on one of the other signs, please do! -- Zac Δ talk! 10:43, 7 September 2011 (UTC)
- Cancer (astrology)
- Leo (astrology)
- Libra (astrology)
- Scorpio (astrology)
- Capricorn (astrology)
- Aquarius (astrology)
- Pisces (astrology)
- Astrologer: hopefully it will become a lot like astronomer or even surpass it in terms of breadth
- Cusp (astrology): needs sourcing and more encyclopedic tone
- Natal astrology - [Does this still need more work? It's not looking too bad to me. Would benefit from more content probably but I wouldn't say this deserves immediate attention over other pages which are in worse state -- Zac Δ talk! 10:48, 7 September 2011 (UTC)]
- Celtic astrology (Note - please don't try to expand this with any of the debunked, new age, "tree zodiac" material. Any relevant expansion would be based on the Celtic Studies sources listed, or similar ones that cover actual, indigenous Celtic astrology (such as Early Irish astrology).
- Add a section on the deep astrological/religious/mystical/mythological significance of archaeoastronomical monuments (Stonehenge, Machu Picchu, etc.: see List of archaeoastronomical sites sorted by country)
- Possible astrological/religious/mystical/mythological roots of Australian Aboriginal astronomy? (I personally don't know much about this branch of astronomy/astrology; does anyone else?)
- List of Astrological Organizations [I have worked on this list - what it needs now is more page entries for the well established astrology asssociatuions it features -- Zac Δ talk! 10:48, 7 September 2011 (UTC)]
