| This is a WikiProject, an area for focused collaboration among Wikipedians. |
First, an important note for everyone to remember:
The members of this WikiProject have come together to make some suggestions about how Wikipedians may contribute to articles about books and literature in general. These are only suggestions, things to give you focus and to get you going, and you shouldn't feel obligated in the least to follow them. But if you don't know what to write or where to begin, following the below guidelines may be helpful. Mainly, we just want you to write articles!

[edit] Hierarchy definition
Since there are many types of publications, boundaries must be set so that other WikiProjects can guide articles that this one doesn't. So far, the titles that have been included on the List of books by title are those that if most people saw the item in their hands, they would call it a 'book'.
Included:
- Novels (i.e. Fiction books - see Wikipedia:WikiProject Novels#Hierarchy Definition for expansion)
- Graphic novels.
- Collections of plays, poetry, short stories and comics that were published as books.
- Nonfiction books on any subject.
- Reference works (including almanacs, atlases dictionaries, encyclopedias, gazetteers, lexicons, telephone directories and thesauri).
- Books in any language, using any method of reproduction.
- Published albums of pictures or photographs.
- Bound manuscripts and other unpublished books.
- Pamphlets.
Not included:
- Computer files, databases and Internet sites that have never been published on paper.
- Magazines, journals, newspapers and other serials that were issued more frequently than once a year should be included in WikiProject Journalism.
- Documents that are likely to be separate sheets of paper, unbound.

For assessing book articles within the project, see /Assessment. This WikiProject is assessing major literature related articles, see /Worklist. For assessing novels see WikiProject Novels/Assessment.
One of the most common methods used by WikiProjects to monitor and prioritize their work is that of assessing the articles within their scope. The de facto standard for these assessments is the Version 1.0 Editorial Team's assessment scale (shown at right).
This project also makes importance assessments.
