Wikipedia:WikiProject Deletion sorting/India
| Points of interest related to India on Wikipedia: Outline – Portal – Category – WikiProject – Alerts – Deletions – Cleanup – Stubs – Assessment – To-do |
This is a collection of discussions on the deletion of articles related to India. It is one of many deletion lists coordinated by WikiProject Deletion sorting. Anyone can help maintain the list on this page.
- Adding a new AfD discussion
Adding an AfD to this page does not add it to the main page at WP:AFD. Similarly, removing an AfD from this page does not remove it from the main page at WP:AFD. If you want to nominate an article for deletion, go through the process on that page before adding it to this page. To add a discussion to this page, follow these steps:
- Edit this page and add {{Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/PageName}} to the top of the list. Replace "PageName" with the relevant article name, i.e. the one on the existing AFD discussion. When you save the page, the discussion will automatically appear.
- You should also tag the AfD by adding {{subst:delsort|India|~~~~}} to it, which will inform editors that it has been listed here. You may place this tag above or below the nomination statement or at the end of the discussion thread.
- Please indicate the title of the article in the edit summary, it is particularly helpful to add a link to the article in the edit summary.
Note that there are a few scripts and tools that can make this easier.
- Removing a closed AfD discussion
Closed AfD discussions are automatically removed by a bot.
- Other types of discussions
You can also add and remove links to other discussions (prod, CfD, TfD etc.) related to India.
- Further information
For further information see Wikipedia's deletion policy and WP:AfD for general information about Articles for Deletion, including a list of article deletions sorted by day of nomination.
This list is also part of the larger list of deletion debates related to Asia

- Note: The wubbot removes and archives closed debates from this page a few times a day, so there is no need to manually remove such pages.

- Delete - this is pure and simple WP:LISTCRUFT and is admittedly incomplete. Eddie.willers (talk) 00:56, 12 February 2012 (UTC)

- Nearly every article in Wikipedia is incomplete, so that can't be used as a reason to delete, and "listcruft" is nothing more than a term of abuse rather than a reasoned argument. Phil Bridger (talk) 18:13, 12 February 2012 (UTC)
- Keep. It seems to be standard practice for major popular music stars to have complete discographies on Wikipedia, and you don't get much more major than Mohammed Rafi. This bare alphabetical listing is pretty useless in itself, but could become an acceptable article if it was sorted by year and film, and even better with the addition of the composers of the songs. We don't delete articles that have potential for improvement. The Mohammed Rafi article only scratches the surface of his output. Phil Bridger (talk) 18:13, 12 February 2012 (UTC)

- Keep Higher education institutions are inherently notable. The problem with this article is a lack of independent references (so tag it as unreferenced), though the Institute's own web site ought to be a source. Emeraude (talk) 11:16, 11 February 2012 (UTC)
- Nothing is "inherently notable", it all has to meet WP:GNG. Now for high schools and upwards we have a general assumption that such establishements will be notable, but that's still not beyond challenge. In this case we have no hard sourcing that the place exists as a real school or institute, just one self-published source. For an Indian educational establishment (with all the self-serving puffery, plagiarism and downright lying that implies) that's just not enough. Andy Dingley (talk) 19:36, 11 February 2012 (UTC)
- If this institution doesn't exist then it is incapable of self-serving puffery, plagiarism and downright lying. Please try to make your arguments logically consistent. Phil Bridger (talk) 21:32, 11 February 2012 (UTC)
- By "exist" of course I mean "exist as an accredited educational institution", rather than just being someone with a website and a printer of degree certificates. Andy Dingley (talk) 21:51, 11 February 2012 (UTC)

- Delete - I find it difficult to reconcile those subjects which have inherent notability from the clear statements in Wikipedias notability guidelines. Why Colleges, schools, Bishops, Professors should all enjoy this automatic elevation to notability does not seem , to me at least, justifiable. [edit] Sienna Biotec

Small Indian biochemical firm; the article previously claimed to be partnered with Siena Biotech (an Italian firm) and GlaxoSmithKline, but these claims seem to have been either misleading or entirely unsupported by the sources. The one remaining claim of involvement with a major partner is sourced to a press release from the company, which bears an astonishing similarity to this press release from the other Siena Biotech, here, with the names changed; the supposed partner, Omega, didn't issue a press release on their own site, and so I have real doubts about this claim.
If these claims are removed, we have a relatively small firm (revenues of 82M Rs. ~ 1M GPB, 1.5M USD) with no external sources provided to show its importance. The notability guidelines explicitly require significant coverage in secondary sources, and that simply isn't provided here. I've made some efforts to find any, but it's almost impossible to find anything about the firm that doesn't turn out to be discussing the Italian company. Shimgray | talk | 16:08, 10 February 2012 (UTC)
- Delete I'm the one who removed the false claim. It does appear that this company is attempting to make it appear that it is more important than it is. - Keep The company looks like geographically limited to India with Name, The claim for International association with GSK is fairly possible, looking from techinical point of view, Alzheimer's disease, Huntington's disease and oncology are quite complex diseases and the possible drugs are yet not there in Market. Simillarly Gabapentin and Pregabalin looks like in the International patient list of new pharmaceuticals Drug. However more expert openion is required on this subject.Whileships savedhead (talk) 22:33, 11 February 2012 (UTC)
- Weak Keep The article requires lot of work to meet wikipedia standards, but recent activities with Omega Pharma is contradicting, Similar name also looks like a problem. The News link [[2]] clears some confusion, however I am giving it benefit of doubt, not very sure, I have added the same reference to the article main space.X*chemistry nerd (talk) 22:51, 11 February 2012 (UTC)
- That press release (issued by the company) is an almost verbatim copy of this press release (PDF), with the partner changed to Omega and the quote sourced to someone at Sienna Biotec India - it still refers to "Verona", even! It's either a deliberate attempt to mislead, or an incredibly improbable coincidence. Note that Omega, the claimed partner, has not issued any such release. An incomprehensible block of text full of peacockery, POV and little explanation as to what this is even about. There are far too many Subcontinent articles like this. - KEEP 30 DAYS PENDING In my opinion, the article about this notable geographic and historic area is pretty crude and should be deleted unless a lot of improvement is made in the next 30 days. Here are some suggestions. (A) Turn article into a geography stub that points back to Kerala article, which in turn should point back to India article; (B) Purge non-neutral superior/inferior language (see WP:POV), and where absolutely necessary, use neutral language to report that others think in terms of superior/inferior; (C) Add wikilinks for terms readers in US and Britain are unlikely to know, and it iss ok if they are red provided you later create those articles too; (D) Add verifiable sources for all factual assertions; (E) Add maps and pic or two; (F) Delete after 30 days without significant improvement. NewsAndEventsGuy (talk) 12:14, 8 February 2012 (UTC)
-
- There's not really a good way to keep for a given period of time; inevitably, we'll forget and then there'll be another AFD/MFD that reads "Holy crap we gave this guy 30 days 6 months ago. Kill it with fire." Better, I think, to userfy it and guide the author. UltraExactZZ Said ~ Did 14:10, 8 February 2012 (UTC)

- Ok, then it could be "Keep pending specified improvements" and asking renoms to wait for a minimum of 30 days, and if it turns out to be longer than that the ultimate time period should be treated as irrelevant. NewsAndEventsGuy (talk) 14:19, 8 February 2012 (UTC)
- The time period could be indefinite, if progress is being made. If it sits for a while, someone could shuffle it off to MFD. UltraExactZZ Said ~ Did 14:47, 8 February 2012 (UTC)

- Userfy. None of the problems cited by the nominator are insurmountable, and could be remedied with simple editing over time. The author does not appear to be a speaker of native English, which complicates matters. UltraExactZZ Said ~ Did 14:09, 8 February 2012 (UTC)
- Keep The subject appears notable (a notable ethnic/social group), though the text itself is a mess it looks like there should be an article about this subject at Wikipedia. Given that, I see no reason to delete it; since what it needs is a good cleanup by someone both knowledgable and with a good command of scholarly English. That's also why I oppose userfication, and think it would do much better in the main space. If we userfy it, it will just fester in the userspace of the person who created it, and stands no chance to get any outside attention from anyone that could actually help it. Articles that need cleanup should remain in the mainspace where people can find it and fix it. That's how Wikipedia works, when multiple people with different skills all end up contributing to make something better. Userfying this means it will never get improved by anyone else. Either fix it up now, or leave it for someone else with the proper knowledge and skills can fix it later. There's no rush for a perfect article now (and this one is FAR from perfect.) --Jayron32 17:22, 8 February 2012 (UTC)

- Keep. I don't understand the policy grounds for this deletion request. The page seems to be validly encyclopedic, or at least almanac, information; it doesn't obviously belong on some other project, and the facts are verifiable. It may be that this page is simply the first instance of a type of page that could be profitably added to each country as soon as someone gets bothered to do it. As Lord Featherstonehaugh-Fanshawe wrote in The Great Western Railway Co. v. Haddock, "there is no precedent for anything until it has been done for the first time." - Smerdis of Tlön - killing the human spirit since 2003! 16:46, 8 February 2012 (UTC)
- Keep
Simply because no other country has corresponding page is not a sufficient reason to decide what content must be compiled and which pages are appropriate on wikipedia.
The reasons proposed for deletion are not listed as wiki's guiding reasons for deletion. Instead of deleting this, I encourage that such pages be created for all countries.
FWIW, tabular fact sheet pages of the kind similar to Fact sheet on India are all over wikipedia, many highly viewed per day. See these for example:
- List of countries by sex ratio
- Lists of countries and territories
- Table of World Heritage Sites by country
- Table of voting systems by country
- Nationwide opinion polling for the United States presidential election, 2008
etc.
Finally, I submit for matter of record that Reichsfurst originally marked the article for deletion with the following claim: "Information contained in article on India - merge would be unnecessary. This seems to basically be information copied from another site."
The proposal and reasons for deletion above, submitted on 16:23, 8 February 2012 (UTC) by Reichsfurst, have not answered my humble question to Reichsfurst. I asked the wiki contributor - "please identify where this information is available, and which site is it copied from?" I have yet to get an answer from Reichsfurst. If an answer is provided, and it is persuasive, I will happily reconsider my position. Thank you. ApostleVonColorado (talk) 16:57, 8 February 2012 (UTC)

- I like 'change the title' suggestion. ApostleVonColorado (talk) 20:19, 8 February 2012 (UTC)
- I just re-read the article on India. Most category metrics of Fact sheet on India are not mentioned. A few that are, do not have the relative basis - that is how many countries is the ranking based on. Being 39th of 40 countries is contextually different than being 39th of 212 countries. Adding relative basis info into India, or merging all the current or future category metrics into wiki article on India may not be appropriate. I am not convinced that economic metrics such as 'Total reserves (includes gold, current US$)' belongs inside a general article such as India. ApostleVonColorado (talk) 20:15, 8 February 2012 (UTC)
- Comment One thing that's a bit troubling about this article leans almost exclusively on the World Bank's data, a fair bit of which seems estimated or subjective. The article almost seems like it should be titled 'The World Bank's development indicators for India'. Nwlaw63 (talk) 21:20, 8 February 2012 (UTC)

- Yes, 60% of the stats are from world bank database, 40% elsewhere. - I appreciate all the comments, as well as reasoned arguments that go with "keep" or "delete." Note that the article was created less than 24 hours ago. My intent was to add sufficient explanatory text, and some context, to put statistics within the article in their proper context for a general reader. For example, not just rank with basis, but how the metric compares with the best in the world, the world average, etc.; plus, what each metric means in a context that the general reader can appreciate. I envision future wiki editors will add more tables and update these tables not only for India vis a vis the world, but also for each state/region/territory within the country - again, with context for the general reader. I feel tables enhance readability of statistical data lists; this when presented with context is validly encyclopedic. ApostleVonColorado (talk) 01:23, 9 February 2012 (UTC)

According to WP:ORG, An organization is generally considered notable if it has been the subject of significant coverage in reliable, independent secondary sources. Trivial or incidental coverage of a subject by secondary sources is not sufficient to establish notability. There is no secondary source that discusses Dexetra (the company) in detail, the sources are about Iris (the product, not the company). The only reference I can find which has an incidental and trivial coverage about this company is this which I believe is not sufficient to meet the criteria of WP:ORG. The larger question is whether that also-ran personal assistant software for some mobile phones has the kind of significance for all the rest of human history (yes, all 10 1/2 months left of it) needed to support an encyclopedia article at this time; but that isn't the question posed here. But assuming for the moment that Iris (software) merits an article, a brief notice of the developer in its article would not be out of order. - Keep Nominator offers no valid rationale for deletion; the issue is not the subject's "credentials" but whether he satisfies Wikipedia criteria at WP:ACADEMIC or WP:BIO. He does NOT meet the academic standard; his publications are few and citations minimal. However, he appears to meet WP:BIO due to multiple articles about him in the Times of India [4] [5] [6] and other publications [7] [8]. I am uncomfortable that some of these articles tout unproven, unpublished technologies, but Wikipedia standards suggest that this degree of national publicity makes the subject notable, whether or not I approve of everything he does. - Gautam Sanyal is not an elected local or a national politician.
- He is a member of the Indian Civil Service. The retirement age of a member of the civil service in India is 60 years old. Gautam Sanyal retired in 2011 as he turned 60 years old; however, he is the first civil servant or bureaucrat in India to head an Office of the Chief Minister of a state in India after retirement from his tenured service. (this is notability as first in recorded history).
- Please read the following article then you will understand why he 'should have and has a' biography article in Wikipedia.

- Merge to Mamata Banerjee All the 'find sources' GNews hits relate to the subject of the article, but none of the GBooks or GScholar ones do. Of the GNews hits, while many are passing mentions, quite a few, relating to controversy either about his original appointment to his current position (which does not seem to be automatically notable) or to its extension when he reached retirement age, are more substantial - but seem less concerned with the subject himself than with either with the precedents broken by his appointment or its extension or with Banerjee's insistence on appointing and then keeping him. In brief, he seems to have some notability under {{WP:GNG|]] - enough to justify a mention on Wikipedia - but all inherited from Banerjee. As a complicating factor, many of the GBooks hits and almost all of the GScholar ones seem to relate to a biochemist with AstraZeneca whose research publications would probably meet WP:PROF should anyone ever create an article on him. PWilkinson (talk) 12:23, 22 January 2012 (UTC)
_______________________________
- I think there is no need to merge an individual biography to an another persons biography. There is the need to have a single source, legible biography article of 'Gautam Sanyal'. There is a reason for notability and why I created this article which many have either ignored or just skipping off. This is the notability as I mentioned with sources "The post of the Secretary to the Chief Minister of West Bengal" in the Chief Minister Office in West Bengal since India's Independence in 1947 has been held by officers of IAS cadre (All India Civil Service, Group A). However, Gautam Sanyal [officer of CSS cadre (Central Civil Service, Group A)] is the first one in recorded history to break this legacy and become the Secretary to CM.
- The point is - civil servants of central service usually go for deputation to an another state for few months or a single year for experience but not permanent posting. He likely is the first CSS officer, the first non IAS officer and the first retired civil servant who hold the post of Secretary. The post is considered to be the most powerful in the state of West Bengal. However, also civil servants in the state and even India has considered Sanyal to have more power and control than the Chief Secretary of the State. Question; in the bad old days, senior civil servants were awarded state honours; Order of the Indian Empire/Order of the Star of India. Did India continue with this sort of thing? If so, what awards has he received? Is he covered in a Who's Who - style reference work? — Preceding unsigned comment added by Barney the barney barney (talk • contribs) 18:16, 3 February 2012 (UTC)
- Delete The argument for keep strikes me after straining for notability through a particular rare but not really notable career structure. DGG ( talk ) 01:50, 7 February 2012 (UTC)
- DO NOT Delete DGG is wrong. The article "Gautam Sanyal" is a biography article. The article should exist and live by the virtue of the notability that he is one of the senior civil servants in India who is the most important officer in a state which the State Chief Minister has fought for from many of the civil servants who are allotted in the state and worked for whole their life who did not get the position he serves now.
- The reason why there is not a "career structure" in the article is because this is all the information I have of the person (I should point out that it is not because he has limited or no notable career experience and structure). Hence, the article has limited information with credible references. However, I am working to get as much information of the article on the person. You should see in coming days more references and information in the article.
- You should note that the article has references. I should point out that there are many articles (but not many and not all) in wiki which does not even have a reference and an external link but solely exists on the virtue and principle that the person is important in the state or the head of the government or bureaucracy. I think people should move out of double standards and search for more information on web. Thanks! — Preceding unsigned comment added by 59.178.191.174 (talk) 01:04, 8 February 2012 (UTC)
