   Assessment

Welcome to the assessment department of the Dogs WikiProject! This department focuses on assessing the quality of Wikipedia's articles about Dogs or Dog-related subjects. While much of the work is done in conjunction with the WP:1.0 program, the article ratings are also used within the project itself to aid in recognizing excellent contributions and identifying topics in need of further work.

The ratings are done in a distributed fashion through parameters in the {{WPDOGS}} project banner; this causes the articles to be placed in the appropriate sub-categories of Category:Dogs articles by quality, which serves as the foundation for an automatically generated worklist.

Statistics[edit]

Frequently asked questions[edit]

How can I get my article rated?
Please list it in the section for assessment requests below.
Who can assess articles?
Any member of the Dogs WikiProject is free to add—or change—the rating of an article.
What if I don't agree with a rating?
You can list it in the section for assessment requests below, and someone will take a look at it. Alternately, you can ask any member of the project to rate the article again.
Aren't the ratings subjective?
Yes, they are, but it's the best system we've been able to devise; if you have a better idea, please don't hesitate to let us know!

If you have any other questions not listed here, please feel free to ask them on the discussion page for this department.

Instructions[edit]

An article's assessment is generated from the class and importance parameters in the {{WikiProject Dogs}} project banner on its talk page:

{{WikiProject Dogs
|class=
|importance=
|breeds=
|GH racing=
|attention=
|needs-infobox=
|reqphoto=
|of=
|dyk=
}}

The following values may be used for the class parameter:

Articles for which a valid class is not provided are listed in Category:Unassessed Dogs articles. The class should be assigned according to the quality scale below.

Quality scale[edit]

Importance scale[edit]

The following values may be used for the importance parameter (they should be entered exactly as given):

Importance parameter values (Category:Dogs articles by importance)
Value Meaning Examples Category
Top "Key" articles, considered indispensable Dogs, Dog breed Top-importance Dogs articles
High High-priority topics and needed subtopics of "key" articles, often with a broad scope; needed to complement any general understanding of the field Companion dog, Dog food High-importance Dogs articles
Mid Mid-priority articles on more specialised (sub-)topics; possibly more detailed coverage of topics summarised in "key" articles, and as such their omission would not significantly impair general understanding Canine distemper, Obedience school Mid-importance Dogs articles
Low While still notable, these are highly-specialised or even obscure, not essential for understanding the wider picture ("nice to have" articles) Bamse the St Bernard, Dog-show judge Low-importance Dogs articles

The importance parameter is not used if an article's class is set to NA, and may be omitted in those cases. If the importance parameter is not yet set, or contains an invalid value, the article will be assigned to Category:Unknown-importance Dogs articles.

Requesting an assessment[edit]

If you have made significant changes to an article and would like an outside opinion on a new rating for it, please feel free to list it below.

To improve an assessment above B class, the evaluation needs to be done through set channels. Information on the Good Article (GA class) is here, and Featured Articles (FA class) is here.

  1. Bolt (character) - Carlminez (talk) 18:53, 9 May 2011 (UTC). - This is my first article on Wikipedia! Some professional opinions or comments would be very interesting.
  2. Chow Chow - ItsWolfeh (talk) 04:54, 2 July 2011 (UTC)
  3. Treo - Chris (talk) 20:34, 13 July 2011 (UTC)
  4. Staffordshire Bull Terrier - Oosh (talk) 04:30, 15 February 2012 (UTC). - I believe this has article has matured beyond 'Start' and warrants a 'higher importance' due to it being popular breed that attracts (unfortunately negative) media attention and popular (by page views) relative to other articles in the project.
  5. Vaccination of dogs has received major updates with current, international, reputable sources and been re-organized into more readable sections. It could now benefit from a GA nomination and review. (Adelle Frank (talk) 15:35, 8 July 2012 (UTC))
  6. Adverse vaccine reactions in pets could use a general review to see if it qualifies for inclusion in this project and, if so, at what levels of importance and quality. (Adelle Frank (talk) 15:35, 8 July 2012 (UTC))
  7. Owney (dog) has had major improvements and expansion since it was first rated as 'Start'. Could someone look it over to see if a higher rating is in order. Thanks.--Doug Coldwell talk 10:46, 12 August 2012 (UTC)
  8. Setter - I've tried to add some substance and images to this 'stub'. Could someone have a look, please? Firstly to make sure what I've done is okay; and also to see if it's ready to lose the 'stub' category? If anyone has further suggestions on improvements to it, I'd be grateful. The images are not great but were all I could find on Wiki Commons. Sagaciousphil (talk) 13:30, 14 October 2012 (UTC)
  9. Anatolian Shepherd - I think this article has improved beyond the 'start' class rating. The Kangal Dog article needs improvement and should be reclassified to 'start' class until Turkish information is cited and referenced. Bebekve (talk) 05:42, 26 December 2012 (UTC)
