Wikipedia:WikiProject Hiking Trails
This Wikiproject's goal is to establish a standard infobox and create/edit articles on hiking trails and trail systems throughout the world. Eventually, this project will help inform others on hiking trails worldwide and the work done to maintain them.

[edit] Scope
This WikiProject aims primarily to provide a common layout for articles on a specific named trail such as the (e.g. Appalachian Trail), not for articles just related to trail hiking (e.g. hiking).

[edit] Structure
A template will provide a common set of features on a trail organized into a consistent format. The template will include an infobox, that contains the following attributes:
- Name of the trail
- Length - In miles and kilometres
- Elevation - Change in elevation along the entire trail
- Highest Point - Highest point of the entire trail (if available)
- Lowest Point - Lowest point of the entire trail (if available)
- Starting/Ending Points - Where the trail begins and ends
- Difficulty - Difficulty of hiking the entire trail
- Season - The seasons the trail should be hiked
- Use - What the trail may be used for (e.g. hiking, biking, horseback riding) Note: The trail must be used for hiking, at least. Backcountry roads are not to be included here
- Sights - Significant points of interest along the trail
- Hazards - Major hazards along the trail (e.g. Poison Ivy, Wildlife)
The body of the article should try to provide the following information:
- History of the trail
- Geology and biology - Major mountain ranges, flora and fauna
After creating or editing an article, add it to the relevant section on List of long-distance footpaths. If there is an article containing a list of hiking trails for a particular area where the trail runs, add the new entry to that list.
[edit] Categorization
If an article is added or edited to the project, please also add it to the relevant categories: (e.g. Category:Hiking trails, Category:Hiking trails in North America, Trails in Ithaca, New York).
If five articles on hiking trails in a particular country, continent, or specific area are available, please create a category to link them together (e.g. Category:Trails in France)
The current categorization framework is as follows:

{{Infobox hiking trail}} is the primary template to be used in articles about specific hiking trails. The example on the right shows a good example of how a trail template is properly used.
[edit] Usage
The minimum information required to use a template are:
- Name of the trail
- Length of the trail (preferably in miles and kilometers)
- Location of the trail including park, state, county or region where appropriate and country.
- Trailheads (Where trail begins and ends)
- Use (always at least Hiking)
Additional information that may go the Trails Template include:
- Photo of some area of the trail (preferably with a minimum width of 300px)
- Any designation which the trail has received e.g. UK National Trail or U.S. National Scenic Trail.
- The elevation gain and/or loss e.g. "300 metres (980 ft) gain" or "300 metres (980 ft) gain in; 100 metres (330 ft) gain out". Please express the gain or loss in meters or feet, not kilometers or miles. You may use the {{convert}} template to automatically convert values to alternative units. The ElevGainAndLoss field replaces the older ElevChange field which is used to express the sum of the altitude climbed or descended through the trail.
- The highest point in the trail
- The lowest point in the trail
- The Grade in percent, typical with former railroad right-of-ways
- The difficulty of the trail for a typical healthy person based on a reliable source
- The season(s) that the trail may be hiked, or is easily accessible
- The months that the trail may be hiked, or is easily accessible
- Significant sights along the way
- Major hazards that a hiker needs to watch out for
- The trail surface, nature, ballast, asphalt, etc.
- The current or former Right of way, e.g. railroads
- Website of the organization that maintains the trail
[edit] Embed inside another Infobox
The hiking trail Infobox can be embedded inside another Infobox for seamless display of info. For example, a hiking trail that is also a protected area, such as the Kal-Haven Trail. See the testcases for more examples.
Inserting the hiking Infobox inside the parent Infobox
The hiking Infobox can only be inserted after certain field values of the parent template. Specifically, only after fields whose values are not passed to another template by the parent templates source code. In other words, the parent templates source code for the field has to output the fields' value without passing it to a template. This may require examining the parent templates source code. It is ok to insert after field values that contain internal [[]] and external links [].
Example:
{| style="float:right; clear:right; border:0; margin:-0.5em 0 0 0;"
|-
|{{Infobox Protected area
| name = Kal-Haven Trail
...
| governing_body = <div>[[Michigan Department of Natural Resources]]</div>
{{Infobox hiking trail
| Embed = yes
| CellStyle = style="padding:0.1em 0.3em;"
| Name = Kal-Haven Trail
| Title = no
| Length = {{convert|34.5|mi|km}}
...
}}
}}
|}
Note the <div> tag surrounding the governing_body wiki link. It is needed to reduce the vertical spacing between the governing_body field and the first hiking trail field, in this case, Lenth.
Parent Infobox encapsulation
The parent Infobox needs to be encapsulated in a table as in the above example.
{| style="float:right; clear:right; border:0; margin:-0.5em 0 0 0;"
|-
|(parent Infobox)
|}
Parameters
| Field name | Description |
|---|---|
Embed |
Set to Embed = yes when embedding inside another Infobox. |
CellStyle |
Set to a class/style that matches the outer Infoboxes cell class/style so that the columns line up properly. Example for using with {{Infobox protected area}}:CellStyle = style="padding:0.1em 0.3em;" |
Title |
Override the display of the Name for the heading. If not set or empty, the Name will be displayed. If set to no, the heading will not be displayed. If set to anything else, Title will be displayed instead of Name for the heading. |

[edit] Thing To-Do
In the immediate future:
Create a Hiking Template to be placed in the Talk Pages of specific trailsAdd Trail Template to at least one other hiking trailAdd Trail Template to at least ten trails. Zero trails to go.- Add Trail Template to all articles in the Category:Hiking trails in North America.
- Create a Template InfoBox to be placed at the bottom of pages that link to major hiking trail information and major trails
More to come...

[edit] Pictures
Pictures of trails across areas (e.g. Image:Map of Appalachian Trail.png and photos of trails are always welcome.)
-
- I just added photos for the Mountains-to-Sea Trail and the Long Trail. I was pretty surprised that there were no photos yet for the Long Trail. It's pretty easy to get photos from Flickr for something like that. If there are articles that need photos, it's hiking trails. --Omarcheeseboro (talk) 15:25, 18 March 2009 (UTC)
