Welcome to WikiProject Hospitals. Several Wikipedians have formed this collaboration resource and group dedicated to improving Wikipedia's coverage of Hospitals and the organization of information and articles on this topic. This page and its subpages contain their suggestions and various resources; it is hoped that this project will help to focus the efforts of other Wikipedians interested in the topic. If you would like to help, please join the project, inquire on the talk page and see the to-do list below.

Goals[edit]

  • Improve all hospital articles within a common framework

Scope[edit]

In scope

  • Physical sites where medical care is delivered as the main activity: Hospitals, infirmaries, clinics, medical centres, institutes, asylums
  • Military hospitals, field hospitals, hospital ships
  • Management organisations of hospitals - whether government agencies or private companies

Out of scope

Ways to improve articles[edit]

There are over 17,000 hospitals in the world and approximately 4,000 hospital articles on Wikipedia. Many of those can be improved by the following:

  • Expand stub articles
  • Add a hospital infobox
  • Update old hospital infoboxes
  • Use 8 way geolocator to locate other nearby hospitals
  • Add coordinates (Google Earth works great)
  • Add a map (use state maps for larger countries)
  • Add articles to WikiProject Hospitals using template
  • Assess article quality
  • Assess importance
  • Add FAA or ICAO Location identifier codes for hospitals with helipads
  • Stub sorting
  • List of hospitals in (state)
  • Hospitals (state) templates
  • Add new hospital articles

Guidelines[edit]

Naming conventions[edit]

Hospital articles should follow the WP:COMMONNAME policy. If disambiguation is needed because several hospitals have the same name, it should adhere to the "Hospital (Town)" format. It should never be "Hospital, Town". This is because we are disambiguating names, not geographic locations like rivers or towns. If both the hospital and town/city name are the same, then you would generally use the "Hospital (Town, State)" format.

Format of articles[edit]

  • Place {{Infobox hospital}} at the top of the article.
  • Avoid promotional laundry lists of services provided.

Notability[edit]

Hospitals, clinics, and related organizations must comply with the WP:ORG notability standard, which requires, as an absolute minimum:

  1. that the hospital has been noticed by two unrelated, independent WP:Third-party sources,
  2. that at least one source that discusses the organization in-depth (many paragraphs directly about the hospital), and
  3. that at least one source that is outside of the organization's local/service area.

A single author or publisher counts as only one source, regardless of the number of publications by this person. Routine coverage and passing mentions (such as "The victim was taken to E. Normous Medical Center" or "Dr Smith of Smallville Hospital, said...") do not count.

Nearly all hospitals, regardless of size, and most medical clinics and related organizations will have been the subject of at least one in-depth article in their local newspaper. In practice, large, regional hospitals will almost always meet all of these standards, but some smaller hospitals and many clinics will not.

Hospitals that do not meet all parts of this standard do not qualify for a stand-alone article, and should instead be described in a section on healthcare or emergency services in their hometown articles or parent organization, with suitable redirects from the hospital's name. Additionally, if the independent sources available to you would not permit you to write more than one or two paragraphs, then it may be preferable to add that information to a larger article, with appropriate redirects.

Finding sources[edit]

Search engines do not always do a good job of finding articles, so sometimes you have to dig a little. You should start with a search engine to find a good regional, national, or international source.

TV stations may be considered as a regional source, so a search of their websites may generate some results. Local and regional newspapers will usually cover a significant event, usually associated with the anniversary of the hospital, purchase of new equipment, or major expansion.

New articles[edit]

Please feel free to list your new Hospitals-related articles here (newer articles at the top, please). Any new articles that have an interesting or unusual fact in them, are at least over 1,000 characters, don't have any dispute templates on them, and cite their sources, should be suggested for the Did you know? box on the Wikipedia Main Page.

User:AlexNewArtBot - New Article Bot[edit]

We have a feed for the New Article bot. The bot reads all the new articles for a day and puts suspected Hospitals-related articles into User:AlexNewArtBot/HospitalsSearchResult. The articles can be sifted for inclusion within the project if appropriate.

The list of rules are in User:AlexNewArtBot/Hospitals. There is also the log at User:AlexNewArtBot/HospitalsLog explaining the rules that sent an article to the search results (the log is cleared every day, so try to look into the history of the log). Please discuss on the talk page if you are interested in the fine tuning of the rules. Any suggestions are welcome.

Assessment[edit]

Assessment

An article can be rated by quality and importance; for example, using {{WikiProject Hospitals|class=Stub|importance=Low}}. For detailed instructions on quality grading, see: WikiProject Hospitals/Assessment. There are many articles that still need to be assessed. You may help us to assess them, please see Category:Unassessed Hospital articles for the complete list.
