Scope edit
What is covered in this project

The term "Latin music" has an ambiguous meaning in the music industry. Many sources have different definitions of what constitutes as "Latin" in sound or origin. For the sake of simplicity, the project will the use term "Latin" as defined by the Latin Recording Academy. The guidelines below further elaborate what is covered by this project:

Artists, bands, and musicians Artists and bands fall under the Latin music project if they record in Spanish or Portuguese and perform a musical genre from either language. Artists and bands who frequently crossover to the Latin field by recording in Spanish or Portuguese are eligible to be covered by this project. The ethnicity of an artist or band is not factored. Musicians who are performers of any Ibero-American music are included in this project.

Geographical Geographically, this project mainly focuses on Spanish- and Portuguese-language music from Latin America, Spain, and folk music from Portugal. The project scope also encompasses Latin music in the United States.

  • Albums must have at least 50% of its songs or sound recordings in Spanish or Portuguese and incorporate Latin music. Spanish or Portuguese versions of an album recorded in another language are allowed to be tagged in the project.
  • For song recordings, the project covers Latin songs recorded either in Spanish or Portuguese. Spanglish songs as well as Spanish or Portuguese versions of a song by Latin artists are covered by the project as well.
  • Recordings with dialects such as Basque, Catalan, Nahuatl, Quechua, Galician, Valencian, and Mayan are accepted by the project as well.

See the resources guide for useful sources for articles on Latin music including music charts, certifications, and awards.
