Contents |
[edit] Scope
This WikiProject maintains articles regarding New York state routes and related highways in New York. These include:
- Interstate Highways
- U.S. Highways
- New York state touring (signed) routes
- New York state reference (unsigned 900-series) routes except bridges, as detailed below
- Generally, reference routes will not have articles unless the route is a parkway (such as the Taconic State Parkway).
- Toll roads
- Freeways, parkways, expressways, and similar controlled access or semi-controlled access roadways, regardless of whether it carries a numbered route
- Historic auto trails
- Former alignments of numbered routes except city streets, as detailed below
- Any notable roadway of regional significance which does not fall under the purview of WP:USST.
- County routes
This does not include:
- Most city streets, which fall under WP:USST.
- Some city streets carry numbered routes, or did in their past. If a street can be tagged by both WP:NYSR and WP:USST, WP:NYSR will maintain articles about the numbered designation, while WP:USST will maintain articles about the street itself.
- Bridges unless the entire bridge is the entire length of a touring route.
[edit] Goals and purpose
To organize, standardize, and expand the articles on state routes in New York.
This project also maintains Portal:New York Roads, a companion Portal that showcases the best content produced by NYSR and its editors. While the Selected picture and Did you know? sections rotate, the Selected article section is chosen at the end of the prior month and continuously remains on the portal for one month. See Portal:New York Roads/Selected article/March 2012 for the current selected article. Nominations for upcoming months are always welcome.

[edit] Guidelines and structure
If abbreviations for numbered routes ("NY X" for "New York State Route X", "I-X" for "Interstate X", and so forth) are used in the prose of an article, they must be introduced properly. This is done by using the full name of the route when it is first mentioned and placing the abbreviation in parentheses immediately following the full name. From that point onward, the abbreviation should be used instead of the full name. It is only necessary to do this once per route type (state route, Interstate Highway, etc.) per article. For examples of this in practice, see any of the project's Featured Articles.
County routes shall be tagged with |state=NY-CRTF for project article list purposes. If a state route designation redirects to a county route article, then that article shall be dual tagged as |state1=NY and |state2=NY-CRTF. Generally, individual county routes will not have an article unless:
- The county route article covers a former New York state touring route.
- Example: County Route 18 (Otsego County, New York) covers New York State Route 413, which comprised part of modern CR 18.
- The county route has a substantial history, typically but not necessarily relating to a former New York state touring route, that cannot be adequately covered elsewhere.
- Example: County Route 106 (Rockland County, New York) was once part of New York State Route 210; however, merging to NY 210 would result in a substantial loss of article content and merging to the Rockland County Route RCS list would make its section disproportionately large.
County routes that do not meet either of these criteria should be folded into an RCS-style list or redirected to an appropriate location. County routes that are former alignments of New York state touring routes typically do not warrant a standalone article and should be merged to either the touring route in question or an RCS-style list. See also these notability guidelines compiled by the U.S. Roads WikiProject.
The project has developed standards for all lists and articles within the scope of this project, aimed to maintain a consistent format for all lists and articles relating to roads in the state of New York.

All of NYSR's articles are assessed using this set of quality and importance criteria. There are several partially or wholly bot-generated worklists and reports related to assessment:
- Generated by User:WP 1.0 bot: Statewide assessment statistics table, Statewide assessment log
- Generated by User:TwinsMetsFan using a Java program: County by County statistics
Another report, updated by User:JL-Bot, generates a list of all of NYSR's recognized content. That report is transcluded in the Recognized content section below.
The current statewide assessment statistics are transcluded at right.
[edit] Maintenance
The project subscribes to Article alerts, a service that automatically notifies the project when pages within the NYSR scope enter various Wikipedia workflows (such as deletion discussions, good or featured article nominations, peer review, and others). These notifications can be found on the project's Article alerts page.
NYSR also subscribes to Popular pages, a service that tracks the number of page views that each of the project's articles get over the span of one month. The report generated by that service is located at the project's Popular pages page.
[edit] Resources
The project has several external and internal resources that can help you write a high-quality article on New York state routes and related highways. A full list is available at NYSR's resources page. A note: before nominating an article for Good Article status, take a look at the project's pre-GAN checklist. Following the checklist on that page may be the difference between a failed and successful Good Article nomination.
For those interested in collaborating on Internet Relay Chat (IRC), an IRC channel exists at #wikipedia-en-roads. This channel is used by not only New York road editors, but also road editors from around the rest of the world. Feel free to join to discuss/collaborate about anything New York roads. See the IRC page on WikiProject Highways for channel guidelines and instructions on how to join the channel.
Route markers (shields) for all routes and parkways are stored in the New York road sign category on Wikimedia Commons. Guidance on which markers to use for former state routes is available on the project standards page.
