Some Wikipedians have formed a project to better organize information in articles related to plants. This page and its subpages contain their suggestions; it is hoped that this project will help to focus the efforts of other Wikipedians. If you would like to help, please inquire on the talk page and see the to-do list. To join the project, add your username to the list at WikiProject Plants/Participants or just jump in.

[edit] Scope and goals
This WikiProject aims primarily to describe all plants, that is, all species and natural hybrids belonging to the kingdom Plantae. This project's scope also includes notable artificial hybrids and cultivars, botanists and botany-related articles.
Goals:
- Describe all ranks and notable clades (particularly orders, families, genera, species, and natural hybrids) of the kingdom Plantae.
- For species, natural hybrids, and notable artificial hybrids and cultivars, describe botanical properties, distribution, multiplication, usage (medicine, food, etc.), botanical history, cultivation information, and common names.
- Develop and implement a robust method of naming plant articles for the ease of navigation and searching for Wikipedia users.
- Maintain Category:Plants and its subcategories.

[edit] Guidelines
[edit] Plant article naming conventions
Article naming for flora articles differs from standard Tree of Life guideline in the following ways:
Scientific names are to be used as page titles in all cases except the following, as determined on a case-by-case basis through discussion on the WikiProject Plants talk page:
- Agricultural and horticultural cases in which multiple different products stem from the same species (eg. brussel sprouts, cabbage & broccoli). In such a case, a separate page with the botanical description of the entire species is preferred (eg. Brassica oleracea).
- Plants which are economically or culturally significant enough to merit their own page, using the common name as a title, describing their use. Example: Coffee. (A) separate page(s) with the botanical description(s) of the taxa involved, using the scientific name, is preferred.
- Where a genus is monospecific (has only a single species), the article should be named after the genus, with the species name as a redirect. If a family contains only one genus, the article should still be at the genus name, as that is more likely to be commonly recognised.
Common names (vernacular names) are to redirect to scientific names.
- The redirect page can be placed in categories and tagged as printworthy. For example see Golden bladderwort, which has the content
- #REDIRECT [[Utricularia aurea]] {{R printworthy}}
- [[Category:Utricularia species by common name]]
Ambiguous common names, applied to multiple taxa, are to be listed on a set index article.
- Tree peony (set index article)
All known common names for a taxon are to be listed in the article about that taxon. There is currently no consensus regarding capitalization of common names in articles.
- Hesperoyucca whipplei (syn. Yucca whipplei; Our Lord's Candle, Spanish Bayonet, Quixote Yucca, Common Yucca) is a species of flowering plant...

[edit] Assessment
For the criteria used in assessing articles for this project, see Wikipedia:WikiProject Plants/Assessment#Quality scale. It is important to rate the quality of articles correctly; the number of Stub-class articles shown in the table below is much larger than the number of articles which are actually stubs. It appears that editors who expand stubs often forget to alter the quality rating.
