This WikiProject aims primarily to improve Wikipedia articles relating to sociology by organizing articles on the subject, locating notable weaknesses, and editing diligently.

Below are more detailed criteria for including various types of articles under this project's banner. We cannot include all articles related to social activity: that would be millions of articles (all social facts...). Hence, we focus on those elements that are highly related to and mostly exclusive to sociology. Articles on purely sociological issues and terms (such as medical sociology or sociological perspective) should be included. Articles on interdisciplinary issues and terms (such as history of sociology, family, traditions or peace movement) should be included. But articles on specific entities such as a particular family (House of Windsor or element of fashion (brasserie, long hair) are too specific and should not be included, even if there are sociological studies of those concepts; we cannot cover the entirety of social reality. If the subject is notable and reliable sources exist covering it from the sociological perspective, we could however create more specialized articles, so topics like the social construction of the British royal family, sociology of fashion or sociology of clothing may get covered. A biography of a sociologist that has met the notability requirements outlined at WP:BIO (WP:PROF) should be included. But a biography of a famous person who has not directly contributed to sociology, even if he is mentioned by many sociological studies (such as Barack Obama, Martin Luther King or Gandhi) should not be included. When in doubt, please raise the issue for discussion on talk. |

[edit] Improve the bird's eye viewThe entire subject and Wikipedia's coverage of it is intended to be summarized in the Outline of sociology. This is in turn is part of Wikipedia's outline system which is one of Wikipedia's main contents systems. Please look it over and fill-in missing topics. If Wikipedia has an article or article section about those topics, please add links to them. While analyzing the outline, please answer the following questions (and fix the outline as needed):
The overall purpose of the outline is to help readers comprehend the subject by showing what belongs to it, and within the subject what belongs to what. The outline is a taxonomy of the subject, and also serves as a table of contents and navigation aid to browse Wikipedia's articles (and article sections) about the subject. It is also a useful tool for the WikiProject to analyze, plan, develop, and revise sociological material. It is a hub from which to organize related topics. It was built as a "reverse outline", a structural model of an existing work, which in addition to being a summary of the work, can reveal the gaps and other weaknesses for revision purposes. The list below contains recent (~2-3 weeks old) articles which contain the string "sociolog" in them. They should be reviewed to see if they fit in the scope of the project. If they do, our WikiProject assessment template should be added to them, and they need to be assessed on their discussion page for quality and importance. Various copyediting may be required, such as adding a stub template or categories, and the article creators may need to be welcomed to Wikipedia and/or invited to our project.
Articles inappropriate for Wikipedia should be nominated for deletion (see WP:PROD and WP:AFD for how-to).

Primary categories for our project are Category:Sociology and Category:Sociologists. They should be avoided when possible, as usually a more detailed subcategory will exist, and it is preferred that only the most detailed categories are present in the articles.
