Route 66 shields

Capitol Loop

Ok, I got confirmation today from MDOT that: ""per federal law copyrights can not be placed on sign designs therefore the sign is in public domain. Although [I am] correct that it [Capitol Loop marker] does not appear in the MUTCD it is still consider a route marker." Additionally, "we make it a policy not to give out vector art for the simple reason it can be altered and we don't want altered versions distributed or used." Well, that's fine and dandy, but I could photoshop the current PNG to alter it. They can't prohibit the creation of SVGs though since the design is now stated to be in the public domain. I'm going to need some help to create an SVG to replace File:CapitolLoop.png because of the complexity of the detail in the Capitol Dome. any thoughts? Imzadi 1979 → 21:26, 9 August 2010 (UTC)

Hi, I need shields for these 7 Puerto Rico roads.

PR-139 (this is a secondary road intersecting primary PR-14, thus the "county-style" shield is needed)
PR-501 (this is a tertiary road intersecting secondary PR-123, thus the traditional black numbers on round or oval white background, on square black background, is needed)
PR-502 (this is a tertiary road intersecting secondary PR-132, thus the traditional black numbers on round or oval white background, on square black background, is needed)
PR-504 (this is a secondary road intersecting primary PR-10, thus the "county-style" shield is needed)
PR-511 (this is a secondary road intersecting primary PR-14, thus the "county-style" shield is needed)
PR-578 (this is a secondary road intersecting primary PR-1, thus the "county-style" shield is needed)

Freddie, although they ARE showing up in the respective infoboxes (for example PR-511 and PR-139), they are still NOT showing up whenever the jct template is used. For example see the entries for PR-511 and PR-139 in the infobox at PR-14. Thanks. Mercy11 (talk) 06:04, 24 August 2010 (UTC)

It could be related to the problems Commons was having. The problems are occuring when thumbnails were made for large files, not unlike what {{Jct}} does. I'll try purging the files, perhaps that will help. –Fredddie ™ 22:00, 25 August 2010 (UTC)

New Louisiana shields

As seen in this picture, Louisiana has changed the color on their state route markers. Is it possible for the colors on our set of LA shields to be updated? Dough 48 72 18:13, 8 June 2010 (UTC)

It is my understanding that the green ink used to produce the signs is expensive and fades faster than black ink. I also understand that unlike South Carolina or Oklahoma's recent design changes that Louisiana will replace the old green and whites with black and whites as the individual signs need replacement, to save money and because the basic design didn't change, just the colors. I don't see a rush to create a new full set of graphics, and we should probably wait until someone says that the black and white is more common than the green and white. P.S. My other half is from outside of Morgan City, LA, and his family still lives there. I'll have him periodically ask friends down there that if they start to notice that more of the new signs are in place over the old signs to let us know. I would like to request several historical shields for US and state routes in New Jersey to be used in articles of routes that were removed by 1953.

- Here is a picture of an old US 9W shield from NY. In addition, this page shows a bunch of old Tennessee US highway shields that follow the same specifications as the US 9W shield from NY. Ugggh, what a horrible list, I would need to write a parser to figure out which files are still needed. So instead I decided write a paraser for TxDOT.

For the Ranch to Market Roads, only 3 files are needed File:Texas_RM_2224.svg, File:Texas_RM_2355.svg, and File:Texas_RM_2630.svg (current file uses wrong font). Cause of the low number, I will let humans handle those.
For Farm to Market we need 143 three digit signs and 1135 four digits signs, and one two digit sign. I will let a human handle File:Texas_FM_79.svg as it would use a different font size than the rest. The full list of signs needed can be found with the request: Commons:User:Highway Route Marker Bot/Requests#Farm to Market Road, three digit.

Some Farm to Market roads are missing from the completion list, when I get some free time I will try to add those in. Fredddie pointed out a font issue with my current bot, so I will need to do some additional testing before I run these.--Svgalbertian (talk) 07:52, 18 October 2010 (UTC)

Texas sign correction/request

Hey all, Am requesting an addendum be made for a Business Route sign in Texas. Business 101-B file:Texas Business 101.svg is a sign without the sublettering showing which business route it is, in this case, 101-B. Would like to request a Bus 101 route with the B underneath, similar to others. This does follow MUTCD, but I have no physical proof that the sign looks like this in real life (Google shows the way with the separate BUS sign above the regular state highway shield). Thanks for the above request. I would like to request the rest of the uncompleted business shields, using the automated bot, but i do not understand what it wants for the 2 svg images. I assume you are referring to Wikipedia:WikiProject Texas State Highways/Completion list/Business Highways. Unfortunately the bot was only written to replace strings in one location, so each lettered route would have to be separate template. It also doesn't dynamically adjust font sizes, so 1-99 would be a different template than 100+. That means I would need 17 different templates to create 31 images. So at this point I am not interested, but that is not to say that I am not intrigued and I might re-write the bot in the future to accommodate this.--Svgalbertian (talk) 22:57, 26 October 2010 (UTC)

More Texas

User:25or6to4 said he knew of more FM/RM routes not on the completion list. I guess I beat him to it. I added RM 2462 to the list although it is a former rather than existing route.

Also, FM 390 has a spur that needs a shield for the article's junction list. Although FM spurs are not designated separately from their parent routes, they are shielded differently. Full suite of 1961 USH markers

I would support this. Are you planning on just doing 1 through 99, or do you intend on doing 3-digit routes too (which would probably require a copy of Series A to be dug up)? I'll support this as well. Just skip US 102 in doing the 3dUSs. It was decommissioned in 1928. US 112 can be skipped as could US 131. (MSHD didn't use the 1961 specs and stuck with the 1948 specs until the early 1970s when they switched. US 131 didn't exist in IN during that time frame.) Imzadi 1979 → 23:49, 28 November 2010 (UTC)

In running Highway Route Marker Bot (talk · contribs) I am not against using commercial fonts, I just want to make sure I am using them legally. I already paid $5.00 to use USHighwaysOldStyleBCBA. My understanding of US copyright law is that the physical shapes of the letters in a typeface can't be copyright-protected. Font files for a computer are computer software, so they can carry a copyright. Having said that, and knowing that I'm not a laywer, once the letterforms are converted to a path, the job of the software is done, just as the job of a commercial image program is done once the image is created. I can't see that there would be any problem with using the series A typeface in this context. I can pitch in for the typeface. Anyone willing to chip in a few bucks as well? New shields for I-95 in SC, VA, and other locations

Two state-specific I-95 articles have had new shields added to their exit lists which aren't showing up. They consist of;

Done Interstate 73(South Carolina) shield for Interstate 95 in South Carolina.
Virginia State Route 8900 (Stafford County) and Virginia State Route 3000 (Prince William County) for Interstate 95 in Virginia. The already exists, but it won't show up on the I-95 in Virginia page for some reason.

Dan, don't use Iowa shields in VA. Seriously, someone didn't use the right shield for VA-3000, using the name for a non-existent shield for Iowa. (Iowa's shields are technically different than other circles.) Using the {{jct}} with the type "sec" for secondaries and county#=<county name> in VA makes things simpler. I didn't put the Iowa shields in. I think it just turned up that way when the anonymous IP who added them worked on the templates. And believe it or not, those junction templates already has "sec" for secondaries and the county names. ----DanTD (talk) 02:09, 2 May 2010 (UTC)

I changed how {{Jct}} handles VA sec markers. Jct will now look for the file 'Circle sign #.svg' first before it will look for an 'Iowa #.svg' marker. That being said, you may see some wide elliptical markers where there should be a circle. I am working on a plan to correct this.

I am creating a set of wide markers in the naming scheme 'Ellipse sign #.svg' These will take the place of most files currently under the name 'Circle sign #.svg' I will then create a set of circular markers, now somewhat residing at 'Iowa #.svg'. Confused? Here's a table:

Any files that are leftover in the 'Iowa #.svg' naming convention that aren't in the Iowa spec will be purged from Commons. This will allow all of the VA sec markers to be under the 'Circle sign #.svg' convention.

I was wondering if the Highway Route Marker Bot could manage to complete my list at User:Brandonrush/AR state highways. I would type the list of routes needing shields, but there are quite a few and it would be quite a task. This would complete the shield needs for the State of Arkansas. Question regarding use of US 1948 shields

So we're slowly building a selection of 1948-style US Highway shields. Since the MUTCD of the period said to post white square "oversize" markers at intersections, would it be a good idea to create a set of white square USHs for {{Jct}}? Texas State Highway 550 toll...

Hey. I thought I had requested this earlier, but can't find a listing, or a shield. The new toll section of TX 550 has recently opened, and I am requesting an updated sign for it. The shield is actually the inverse of the TX toll sign colors: white lettering on blue background. There's a picture of an example on the Texas State Highway 255 page. I can also confirm that the state toll signs that I have experienced (Loop 1, TX 45, TX 130, TX 255, TX 550). Loop 49, on the other hand, uses the proper blue text on white background. Part of the problem with Canadian route markers is that they can still carry crown copyright. But after looking at the current shield, if you ask 10 people to draw a bushy tree most would draw something extremely similar, so I am willing to go out on a limb and say the design falls below the threshold of originality. You can find a vector version of the sign on page 73 of the Drivers's Handbook that could be extracted (the black border should be green, but the rest looks right). My next project is is Saskatchewan (see dicussion), but once that is done I can take on PEI.--Svgalbertian (talk) 21:50, 22 December 2010 (UTC)

The trees in the wordmark are far more detailed than the ones in the road signs. I am willing to go ahead and tag it {{pd-ineligible}}, but if you do get premission be sure to log it with ORTS. The basic design of the trees comes from the coat of arms, and since those were granted in in 1905 they are no longer covered by any copyright. Additionally, while the coat of arms have may have additional protection from the Coat of Arms Act, Wikimedia Commons is only concerned with copyright. But to be safe they can also be tagged {{insignia}} to warn of other protections. At this point I am still willing to go ahead at make these signs.--Svgalbertian (talk) 23:00, 22 December 2010 (UTC)

The trees in the drivers handbook were different than seen on the sign, so I had to draw them by hand based on signs on Flickr. Two other concerns: File:US Bike 13 Alternate.svg and File:DE Bike 1.svg are using identical styles (which will eventually lead to two redundant sets of markers over two NCs), and both are using a stretched-out version of the bicycle icon. As a disclaimer, the M1-8 shields are technically not for U.S. numbered bike routes, they are meant to be used for generic numbered bike routes. For reference, the MUTCD refers to the white and green oval marker as "the Bicycle Route (M1-8) sign" whereas the white and black acorn-looking marker is referred to as "The U.S. Bicycle Route (M1-9) sign". Perhaps a naming convention such as "bike route xx US.svg" and "U.S. Bicycle Route xx.svg", respectively, would be slightly more clear? Another comment: The U.S. Bicycle Route sign is fairly new, and is a program where route numbers are approved by AASHTO similar to the U.S numbered highways. Historic MN shields

I need a sample/template for the bot to create a set of 1920 and 1934 route markers for Minnesota. The two are identical save for the color, the 1920 is gold and the 1934 is white.

This is an example of an actual 1920 marker. (Another here.) Another is on the legend of this map and there's a good artist's representation on the back of this one.

I did make a few PNGs in the 1934 style but they're not particularly good and I'm pretty sure they're not shaped right.

Doing... I have a working alphabet and a set of the wider numbers. If skinnier numbers are needed, I can use the font that's available. Now the issue is creating the cutout. Texas FM business route

Shields are needed for Business Farm to Market Road 1431-J. This road is less than a year old and is one of only three such roads in the state. Kinu discovered it while destubbing the parent route. It needs lettered shields for the infobox such as:

There is probably a good reason why it's not there, so here are a few questions for you. Where is/was 4S? What time period? Cutout or square? Block or rounded font? Can you prove it is/was there? –Fredddie ™ 03:05, 9 May 2011 (UTC)

Ohio State Route 4s is located in Dayton, Ohio. I do not know when it was put in but, it still exist today. The shield should be square and have rounded font. The only prove I have of it existing is this list of SR 4s junctions from ODOT (Ohio Department of Transportation):[10]. My link will not work to the PDF so click on the link, Click select route by number, Click 002-039, then find 0004S and click on MOT for proof.

Not done I am going to pass. Checking Street View, it's clear that SR 4S is signed simply as SR 4. However, SR 4B, in Butler County, is signed as SR 4 Bypass, so it simply needs a banner. –Fredddie ™ 20:21, 9 May 2011 (UTC)

1926 U.S. shields for Minnesota

File:US 10N (MN).svg and File:US 10S (MN).svg need to be replaced with the 1926-style shield. Both of these routes were removed in 1934, so the existing images are incorrect.

I would also like to request an example of a 1926 U.S. shield for Minnesota for the bot to use as a sample to create the state's full set. I'm not familiar with that process or what it entails though. --Sable232 (talk) 20:52, 15 December 2010 (UTC)

The current scheme of things isn't to replace shields made in the current, 1971 specs directly with previous versions. We have started to set up types of US 1926, US 1948 and US 1961 in both the infobox and {{jct}}. Combine that with the creation of older spec state markers, and an article can have the right vintage markers for the end year of an old highway. (As an example, look at U.S. Route 112. Even the Michigan state trunklines have cutout versions of the diamonds. Imzadi 1979 → 23:43, 15 December 2010 (UTC)

More shields are needed for the List of county roads in Polk County, Florida, two of which would also turn up on U.S. Route 17 in Florida if they're added(Thanks for settling the issues of the description in Eagle Lake, Florida, Freddie). Also, there's one missing for Lake County Road 46, which is a county extension of Florida State Road 46. I'm still having trouble with the Highway Route Marker Bot, so for now I'll request two county road shields in Florida;

I'd like to request shields like the one in Commons for Arizona (sorry, I tried linking it, but I'm not sure how to shrink it. At Commons:Category:Interstate_Highway_shields_with_name_of_state, I-55, I-94, and I-290 are missing for Illinois; I'd like to request these.

I'd also like to request some historical shields for use at Interstate#Interstate_shield. The article mentions four revisions to the design - 1957, 1861, 1971, and 1978 - I'd like to add a diagram of each to show the changes (if the 1978 design is still used, obviously, we have that). The others will have to correct me if I'm wrong, but I'm pretty sure we have everything we need. It's just not nearly as obvious as it is with the USH shields. The MUTCDs themselves are a bit foggy as the depictions from 1971 edition look just like the 1961 edition. Wikipedia:Unified login should have some links to help you set up a Single, Unified Login (SUL) which would "port" your user name and password to other project pages. It will then also link your accounts on each server together, so that if you login on enwp, it will also log you in on Commons, etc. That's the best place I can think to start on your account issue.

If you're up for it, the Michigan Heritage Route markers are in GIF format here at the moment. There are three of them, but fortunately, the only difference between them is a colored bar with a word on the bottom. They are:
