An overview of changes[edit]

Just to summarize what I've done (and plan to do)

  • I've redesigned the Welcome to Wikipedia header. Just like this one better.
  • Added a searchbox. I feel this will help new users navigate around.
  • Changed colors. I like them, but they're not a sticking point.
  • Re-arranged content. DYK, which I enjoy reading is now on the top left. TFA is moved over. ITN is where DYK used to be.
  • Added a featured quote. The idea of having a quote of the day seems cool to me.
  • Shortened everything. Less DYK, ITN, and OTD entries. Shorter TFA Blurb. The old page was too cluttered for me.
    • Intend to do but haven't done:
  • Add inter-language links. I plan on only having links to the first line (300,000+ articles). Most other main pages do the same. A link to the full list will be provided
  • Sister projects. Undecided, but likely to be made similar to inter-language links.
  • Portal. I'd like to add them to the top next to the header. Don;t have technical knowledge to do so at this time.

Colors[edit]

I don't like these colors! Miserlou (talk) 18:04, 6 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Me neither :/ Gary King (talk) 20:45, 6 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Maybe making them lighter might help? These look a bit too dark. -- RyRy (talk) 20:58, 6 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]
I like the size of the page, but the colours need to be neutralized. –thedemonhog talkedits 22:36, 6 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]
I actually like the bright colors. But I'm a software engineer and my wife often sighs when she sees me picking out my own clothes... :P CosineKitty (talk) 23:04, 6 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]
I also like the colours. The main difference I see between the main page and other articles is that articles need to have good content while the main page is to attract readers and thus be eye-catching. GizzaDiscuss © 07:51, 8 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Yeah, the colours are the biggest problem with this one; might be interesting to see it with the colours toned down a little. Anaxial (talk) 20:59, 8 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Comments[edit]

I like how you have reduced the amount of text. It seems less cluttered. futurebird (talk) 18:39, 6 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks, that was the key idea to my whole thing was to declutter the page. I still have to add sister projects and launguages. 5:15 00:34, 7 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Comments[edit]

i like the greater prominence of "Did you know" which alsways helps lead users to new and interesting articles. The colours however are jarring and old fashioned looking. The subtle blue/gray/greens add some elegance to the site I feel. --Brideshead (talk) 21:34, 6 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

colors[edit]

So it looks like people eithor love or hate the colors. Any suggestions on which colors to use? 5:15 00:35, 7 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

I say just lighten the colors on all of them then it will look a lot better. And maybe center the "Welcome to Wikipedia" box, looks out of place on the left hand side.

Oh and nice idea with the Today Quote section. Samaster1991 (talk) 09:17, 9 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

quote[edit]

What does everyone think of idea to add a quote of the day? 5:15 00:50, 7 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

...that sounds like the main page for Wikiquote. --haha169 (talk) 18:00, 7 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]
I think it's a good idea, links to another project doesn't it? Million_Moments (talk) 16:36, 10 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Filler content[edit]

Could you add some filler content to boxes that don't have any right now? Or use {{lorem}}. Gary King (talk) 01:06, 7 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

center[edit]

This main page needs to take into consideration of widescreen computers. The top box needs to be centered somehow, but aside of that, great job! --haha169 (talk) 18:01, 7 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

I agree I love the layout apart from the offcentre-ness (I'm sure thats a word) of the search box and banner. Million_Moments (talk) 16:35, 10 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]
