[edit] Los Angeles County Museum of Art
I thought you'd want to know that the Los Angeles County Museum of Art has launched an image library that has both protected images and images that LACMA is releasing to the public domain because "LACMA owns copyright but would like to share this Content with the public without exercising control as part of our mission to engage and educate our communities". These include 10-40MB photos of archaeological artifacts, sculptures, decorative arts, and costumes. The PD status is indicated on the "about this object" link on individual items.
I have created a new "PD-LACMA" license tag in Commons for these images and will be bringing some over as time permits. There are about 2000 files, but not all are Public Domain. - PKM (talk) 19:40, 27 March 2011 (UTC)
- I'm a bit confused by their labeling, e.g.
Copyright
Digital Image © Museum Associates/LACMA
Public Domain High Resolution Image/Terms of Use
- which you can see on 3-D objects such as [1] The link under "Public Domain High Resolution Image/Terms of Use" seems to say the image is released as PD as far as they are concerned, but it's up to us to determine fully. Will that be good enough for the image reviewers here? Smallbones (talk) 20:22, 4 April 2011 (UTC)
- Failure to warrant against 3rd party claims is pretty standard behavior on the part of museum legal departments. I've asked Commons admins to review the wording in the PD-LACMA license tag and there have been no questions (and one of the 3D object images is currently nominated for Featured Picture). - PKM (talk) 22:07, 4 April 2011 (UTC)

- OK with me. There is lots of support for the likely FP and nobody complains about the license - that should settle the matter if it ever comes up again. Perhaps we should upload some more of these? Smallbones (talk) 22:19, 4 April 2011 (UTC)
- You can see which ones have been brought over already in this hidden category. I'm focusing on the costume photos, but it's taking some time because I am expanding the metadata from the exhibition catalog for Fashioning Fashion and placing the images in articles as I go. Which is more fun that just rote uploading... :-) - PKM (talk) 00:44, 5 April 2011 (UTC)

Hey GLAM people. Is this user account you or it is an imposer. cheers --Guerillero | My Talk 19:21, 2 April 2011 (UTC)
- Thanks for asking, but I just created it so that we had to quick link for the email address. Best regards, Rock drum Ba-dumCrash (Driving well?) 19:30, 2 April 2011 (UTC)
[edit] Review Indianapolis Museum of Art article
In case there is anyone who hasn't already been looped in, I wanted to share with you here the revamped Indianapolis Museum of Art article. It is hoped that this project will make a case study in future GLAM collaboration for museums that ask how to best update their own museum's Wikipedia page. While in the past we've tended to stay away from the actual museum articles themselves due to conflict of interest issues, Liam suggested that this would be a great opportunity to work through a process that could be replicated in the future. With the help of the GLAM-Wikipedia community, we will avoid conflict of interest problems while still providing the museum with an up to date article. If any one would like to look over the article, I'd be happy for you to. Thanks! HstryQT (talk) 12:34, 22 April 2011 (UTC)
[edit] Sums it up
I thought this article linked from this month's newsletter deserved a wider audience (?!?) It's an account of the recent work at Derby Museum and Art Gallery with QR codes for QRpedia by a (recently redundant :-( ) curator which is interesting enough in itself, but he gives a great cut-out-and-keep list of bullet points for other institutions, which gains potency coming from their side of the fence :
[edit] Working with Wikipedia and wikipedians
- Making minor edits to Wikipedia articles is incredibly easy to do
- Adding hyperlinks is pretty straightforward, too
- Understanding how to add references can be tricky at first
- Ensuring factual statements are traceable is a pain
- Never state something you know to be true without being able to prove it. This can incur the wrath of other wikipedians.
- Don't use Wikipedia to advertise your organisation. Just link to it whenever appropriate to do so.
- Image rights can be complicated. Be willing to supply images at a sensible resolution - this won't damage your income streams.
- Wikipedians are immensely enthusiastic.
- Museums have lots of stuff they can use (give them access to history files and reference books)
- Wikipedians aren't out to steal our stuff
- Wikipedians want to help museums improve their offer
- Wikipedians can do immensely clever stuff
- They love complexity!
- The opportunities for collaboration between us are immense
And one final thought . . .
- Why has it taken so long for curators to start dating Wikipedians? We were made for each other.

[edit] Working with donated content
There are a number of discussions at Wikipedia talk:GLAM/ARKive which touch upon wiser issues of how we work with GLAMs and in particular how we use their donated content. Further input will be welcome. Andy Mabbett (User:Pigsonthewing); Andy's talk; Andy's edits 20:47, 29 July 2011 (UTC)
[edit] University of Maryland institution staffer wants to participate in Wikipedia
I spotted new User:UMDSpecColl making spam-like edits to Maryland related articles so I welcomed the user and linked the spam page. The user seems to be interested in participating in a larger way so I thought I'd bring this discussion to members' attention. This could be an opportunity to work with a state library special collection in a very positive way for both the pedia and the collection. BusterD (talk) 21:56, 12 August 2011 (UTC)
[edit] University of Houston Digital Library
Someone might want to check out UHDigitlalLibrary (talk · contribs) and see we might establish a mutually-beneficial relationship. Thanks, –xenotalk 13:38, 18 August 2011 (UTC)
- I posted on the talk page and sent an email to the contact at UHD.LoriLee (talk) 23:55, 26 August 2011 (UTC)
[edit] Fuller Craft Museum
I thought I'd mention this here, since it looks like some of you may be interested. The user account of a Fuller Craft Museum employee created the Fuller Craft Museum article, and encountered problems with images licensing issues. He/she asked for assistance here, but the account was blocked indefinitely before we could really help the person. The article has multiple problems. Any help is appreciated. – Quadell (talk) 19:14, 23 August 2011 (UTC)
- Thanks, I emailed a few members of the staff just to let them know we're here to help if they'd like to proceed. LoriLee (talk) 00:01, 27 August 2011 (UTC)
- Wow, that's great of you! I tried to clean up the article as best I could. – Quadell (talk) 01:59, 27 August 2011 (UTC)
- Thanks so much! That's equally great of you :). I often don't have time to dive into the editing, but can shoot off an email of advice rather quickly. Sometimes it just takes some friendly faces coming to their aid. If they reply I'll let them know they have some people on hand willing to help. Appreciate it! LoriLee (talk) 12:46, 27 August 2011 (UTC)

[edit] Art Museum GLAM
Hi everyone. I have an OTRS ticket from a Seattle museum interested in doing a GLAM type event. This is the sort of thing they have in mind. Who do I need to put them in touch with to handle this? --Errant (chat!) 22:35, 26 August 2011 (UTC)

[edit] Wikipedia Loves Libraries
We're discussing possible program activities and growing the Wikipedia:Wikipedia Loves Libraries main page. It occurred to me perhaps we should have a librarian entry point (like the getting started page here). Since coordinating library/wikipedian cooperation is directly within the sphere of this project's interest, I wonder if we can get input from GLAM members about how best to build this event up to its first-year potential. After all, Wikipedia will be here next year, and so will they. Finding common ground seems an easy task. What lessons has GLAM learned which can make this event better in concept? BusterD (talk) 17:46, 27 August 2011 (UTC)
[edit] Where to discuss GLAM outreach?
Please see my question at commons:Commons_talk:Partnerships#Suggestions_for_places_to_reach_out_to. Perhaps that page should link somewhere here? --Piotr Konieczny aka Prokonsul Piotrus| talk to me 22:18, 27 September 2011 (UTC)
[edit] GLAMcamp:Amsterdam
There will be a GLAM planning/coding/best-practice-discussing event in early December in Amsterdam. Please read all about it at m:GLAMcamp Amsterdam. Sincerely, Wittylama 16:09, 11 October 2011 (UTC)
[edit]
I hope its ok with the GLAM project but I added three of the GLAM US related projects to the Joint projects listing of WikiProject United States today. These are teh NARA, Smithsonian and Archives of American Art. Doing this will allow the articles and projects additional visibility and will allow them to be covered by the bots and things running on the articles in the WikiProject United States' scope. --Kumioko (talk) 18:07, 2 February 2012 (UTC)
- This is of course fine! Thanks for doing as much. It's on my agenda to mobilize the US GLAM sphere and get out into the projects better. I admit I'm slightly sad that The Children's Museum of Indianapolis project, which is the longest residency to-date, isn't included ;) ... we get overlooked a lot. I appreciate it and I'm sure I'll be in touch a lot more soon. LoriLee (talk) 21:46, 1 March 2012 (UTC)
[edit] Iziko museum, and / or Het Scheepvaart Museum anyone?
Not even remotely sure whether this is the right place to ask for help. Please see here (and farther up the page, too). We could really do with having the plans of the ship Meermin, to illustrate our article(s) on her. The plans date to 1760, and are held by Het Scheepvaart Museum. They were released to Jaco Boshoff (archaeologist) under strict permissions. It's possible to buy a copy, but then I don't know if it could be used. My understanding of copyright (which is limited, at best) would be that the plans themselves have been public domain for centuries; I'm not at all sure what (if anything) Het Scheepvaart Museum has done to / with them which gives them a renewd copyright of any kind. Can anyone find out exactly how things stand, here? It seems to be an area where a GLAM outreach worker might be able to assist. Pesky (talk) 15:19, 21 February 2012 (UTC)
[edit] Peace Palace Library
Could someone work with User:Andoornborg on appropriate links to the Peace Palace Library? They have a number of potential resources concerning the cause that look like they could be useful (see their userpage), but I think they should be coordinated through GLAM rather than as an individual effort. The user is being careful not to spam and has requested assistance. Acroterion (talk) 15:51, 29 February 2012 (UTC)
- Apologies for the delay, I've since replied. I'd like to ensure that everything followed through with User:Multichill and you both didn't require any further assistance. LoriLee (talk) 22:10, 1 March 2012 (UTC)
[edit] African Film Festival of Cordoba - FCAT
African Film Festival of Cordoba-FCAT (formerly African Film Festival of Tarifa) released text contents under a CC BY-SA license (see right column on website) as part of the project Share Your Knowledge developed within WikiAfrica (GLAM).
I'm going to upload texts from their website in this category. --M.casanova (talk) 11:44, 1 March 2012 (UTC)
- Great news! Thanks for tackling this. This is a similar scheme to the Dictionary of Sydney, and it may be good to use them as a model for articulating the cc by-sa license. See Sydney artists camps as an example, and you'll note at the bottom they have the text italicized and centered: "This Wikipedia article is substantially built upon the essay "Artists' Camps " in the Dictionary of Sydney written by Robin Tranter..." How you're doing it is not wrong at all, just something to consider when it comes to the precedent for the layout. Thanks again - this is great! LoriLee (talk) 22:15, 1 March 2012 (UTC)
