Overlap WikiProject (Merge?)

I just stumbled upon this WikiProject while tagging articles for the Internet pop culture WikiProject. It seems to me that the two projects have enough overlap to warrant a potential merge. Both projects suffer from a lack of participants (just over a dozen on WP:IPC; even fewer on this one) and putting everyone's heads together might get a lot more accomplished.

I think this is also a good idea I will check out WP:IPC soon thanks! — Preceding unsigned comment added by Thaicares (talkcontribs) 20:20, 3 March 2012 (UTC)

Invitation to participation!

Hello!

As you may be aware, the Wikimedia Foundation is gearing up for our annual fundraiser. We want to hit our goal and hit it as soon as possible, so that we can focus on Wikipedia's tenth anniversary on January 15 and our new project: Contributions. I'm posting across these Wikiprojects to engage you, the community, to work to build Wikipedia by finance but also by content. We seek donations not only financially, but by collaboration in building content. You can find more information in Philippe Beaudette's memo to the communities here.

Visit the Contribution project page and the Fundraising page to find out how you can help us support and spread free knowledge. Keegan, Wikimedia Fundraiser 2010 (talk) 06:04, 8 November 2010 (UTC)

Exploding whale — Featured Article Review

I have nominated Exploding whale for a featured article review here. Please join the discussion on whether this article meets featured article criteria. Articles are typically reviewed for two weeks. If substantial concerns are not addressed during the review period, the article will be moved to the Featured Article Removal Candidates list for a further period, where editors may declare "Keep" or "Delist" the article's featured status. The instructions for the review process are here.

Scope question

Is this project limited to "pop" culture on the Internet (memes etc)? My reason for asking is that I run a blog exploring the impact of the Internet on society ([Human 2.0]) and am interested in the large scale ways in which society is being transformed. (As covered for example by The Virtual Revolution documentary). Let me know if this stuff is relevant here and I will get involved. Thanks Alexbowyer (talk) 18:08, 11 January 2011 (UTC)

It's an interesting topic area, and I'd be happy to collaborate with you. It might be best to start collaborating on some articles, attract other participants, and see where it fits the best. There are a lot of related articles in Category:Computing and society.
As you can see, this project is fairly inactive. I think its scope could be more useful if it were modified and expanded to cover computing and society, or technology and society. --Pnm (talk) 18:57, 11 January 2011 (UTC)
Perhaps. As a sociologist of the Internet, and member of Wikipedia:WikiProject Sociology, I'd like to note that I think all subjects covered by this project fall under WikiProject Sociology. Of course, they also fall under WikiProjects Internet, and Culture... I'd assume that Internet and society is part of this project scope. Computing and society, and technology and society, are however broader themes. C and S may not fall under Culture, and T and S may not fall under Internet, as they are broader.
On the sociological theme, members of this WikiProject may be interested in the existence of the Communication and Information Technologies Section of the American Sociological Association, which is very much the "Internet sociology" section, and AFAIK the closet professional body in scope to that of this WikiProject (note that ASA has also a separate Science, Knowledge, and Technology section, which is the one that deals broadly with non-computer/Internet "technology and society" aspect). --Piotr Konieczny aka Prokonsul Piotrus| talk 19:23, 26 January 2011 (UTC)

Want to advertise your WikiProject?

I have started making a Wikipedia page purely to advertise GOOD and ACTIVE WikiProject some users may find interesting. It's hard for new users to find a good WikiProject. That's why I'm starting this project, to help new users find WikiProjects that are interesting and can give them a few simple jobs. I've selected this WikiProject as one of the few I initially want to see advertised on this very special page. This will bring in a lot of new members to your WikiProject, so make sure you are ready! To get started, all you need is a statement, userbox or any form of advert-so leave a message on my talk page and I'll see what I can do! RDN1F (talk) 19:10, 3 July 2011 (UTC)

The stats are at Wikipedia:WikiProject Internet Culture/Popular pages.

Nice... I think I can add to it with an 'appears in' section. ReginaldTQ (talk) 08:22, 17 December 2011 (UTC)
So I did a 'see also' section, but it was remoed by someone. I would not mind doing some work for appears in altho would that get removed too? ReginaldTQ (talk) 21:17, 22 December 2011 (UTC)
Well, I was the one who removed it. When something like that happens, feel free to post on the article talk page: Talk:Rage comic. Editors don't always agree about the best way to handle content, style, layout, so we try to reach consensus through discussion. There's a good essay on the bold, revert, discuss cycle which describes the approach I was taking.
The Wikipedia style manual gives some advice on See also sections which says, "as a general rule the 'See also' section should not repeat links which appear in the article's body or its navigation boxes." Since Internet meme was already linked from the lead sentence, and 4chan was linked from the relevant sentence, I don't think they need to be in the See also section, too. – Pnm (talk) 21:51, 22 December 2011 (UTC)

The category viral videos is a subcategory of Internet memes. Yet everything in the categorized as a viral video is also categorized as Internet meme. Shouldn't this be changed? JDDJS (talk) 21:59, 4 January 2012 (UTC)

Probably so. For a few I checked that did not seem to be the case, but this one was in both categories so I removed it from Category:Internet memes. – Pnm (talk) 23:26, 4 January 2012 (UTC)

Racism on social networks

Are there are any articles that cover racism and discrimination on social networks? For example, today, the hashtag #unbonjuif ("a good Jew") was the 3rd most popular French hashtag, setting off a firestorm and condemnations by anti-racist groups, who may pursue legal action against Twitter as well (many of the tweets were anti-Semitic and racist, example, "A good Jew is a dead Jew"). No doubt, there are plenty of Facebook groups that are used to post racist comments on all types of races, religions, ethnicities, and minorities. I think that we can definitely create a comphrensive article on this topic, if one does not exist already.

Thoughts? --Jethro B 03:52, 17 October 2012 (UTC)

I don't really know how to go about this. But currently the "controversy" section on Flickr about the redesign reads like a prosecutor's brief-- wholly one sided, and immediately apparent that the 2-3 authors that have been writing it for 5 days are interested only in magnifying the controversy and focusing solely on negative aspects. What makes it worse is that there appears to be a concerted effort to cite the Flickr Wikipedia page as further "evidence" of the controversy in the only place it exists, more or less in the Flickr Help forum. No idea how to fix this without getting involved in a revert was. Jakerome (talk) 07:07, 25 May 2013 (UTC)

Category:Internet Culture

Would you please add text to that page as to what belongs in that category and what does not. Category:Internet culture is a subcategory of Category:Computing culture which, in turn, is a subcategory of Category:Computing and society. So there are things that are "Computing and Society" that are not "Computing Culture", but which things are included in culture and which are not is not obvious, at least not to me. It would also seem that, since there is no "Internet and Society" category, those things (assuming some exist) should be categorized "Computing and Society", right? I don’t want to sound like I’m insulting the current Wikipedia standards; but scince most, if not all, Internet memes have no copyright owners, it is nearly impossible to add images to this project. Can an exception be made to articles and images in this poject? I mean, if someone actually wanted to be credited for a photo, wouldn’t they care to actually get a copyright on that photo? Please tell me your thoughts. 〜Britannic124 (talk) 02:15, 28 January 2014 (UTC)

  • The internet usually works on appropriation (taking something that isn't theirs in the first place); doubly so with Memes. I doubt that, say, Dancing Baby, was intended to be public domain. Hence why some memes have been brought to court for copyright issues (and found to be fair use); see Downfall. — Crisco 1492 (talk) 12:06, 28 January 2014 (UTC)

Meme Template

Hi All.

I was browsing some meme pages today and found myself frusturated with the lack of a navbox for internet memes. Per WP:BOLD, I took it upon myself to create one. You can see the results at Template:Memes. I originally created it using a script at User:Allanlw/navbox.py which parsed the List_of_Internet_phenomena into a navbox format. I also added the template to a few meme pages, which of course you can see at Special:WhatLinksHere/Template:Memes. I currently don't have the time to add it to all of them (I'm a college student who should be studying for finals...), but I added it to a few that I thought it definitely was fit for.

The template is currently a bit too big, too broad and could probably be pruned down a bit, but I think it's a good start. Hopefully you all over here at WikiProject Internet Culture will agree!

Let me know if you have any comments!

Thanks. -- Allanlw 22:21, 15 December 2013 (UTC)

Seems to be gone now. Sounds like a good idea, tho, maybe someone could see about making a better version of it without violating WP:CSD? Supernerd11 :D Firemind ^_^ Pokedex 02:03, 15 March 2014 (UTC)

Polandball?

Why does Wikipedia seem to have an article on Polandball in almost every language except English? Is there some sort of a commmunity decision against it? MezzoMezzo (talk) 10:00, 13 May 2014 (UTC)

There was one a while ago, but it's since been deleted, then created later on and deleted again. Supernerd11 :D Firemind ^_^ Pokedex 12:13, 13 May 2014 (UTC)
Wow...that's a major malfunction of our community's understanding of deletion policy if something this notable can be deleted twice. This cannot stand. User:Supernerd11, do you know the other users also working on such a page? Do you need assistance? MezzoMezzo (talk) 04:05, 14 May 2014 (UTC)
User:Babelia/Polandball actually appears to be the only one, the rest of the links are for stuff like the ArbCom case dealing with it, MezzoMezzo. Mine's simply copypasted from simple.en and working it up from there, Babelia's is much different (possibly pre-deletion?). It looks to me reading through the ArbCom like it was just a big issue based on national pride that got it deleted. As for whether I want any help, sure! (I probably won't be around so much these next few months due to a lot of meatspace obligations, FYI). Supernerd11 :D Firemind ^_^ Pokedex 04:36, 14 May 2014 (UTC)

Leaflet For Wikiproject Internet Culture At Wikimania 2014

Hi all,

My name is Adi Khajuria and I am helping out with Wikimania 2014 in London.

One of our initiatives is to create leaflets to increase the discoverability of various wikimedia projects, and showcase the breadth of activity within wikimedia. Any kind of project can have a physical paper leaflet designed - for free - as a tool to help recruit new contributors. These leaflets will be printed at Wikimania 2014, and the designs can be re-used in the future at other events and locations.

This is particularly aimed at highlighting less discoverable but successful projects, e.g:

• Active Wikiprojects: Wikiproject Medicine, WikiProject Video Games, Wikiproject Film

• Tech projects/Tools, which may be looking for either users or developers.

• Less known major projects: Wikinews, Wikidata, Wikivoyage, etc.

• Wiki Loves Parliaments, Wiki Loves Monuments, Wiki Loves ____

• Wikimedia thematic organisations, Wikiwomen’s Collaborative, The Signpost

For more information or to sign up for one for your project, go to:

Comment on the WikiProject X proposal

Hello there! As you may already know, most WikiProjects here on Wikipedia struggle to stay active after they've been founded. I believe there is a lot of potential for WikiProjects to facilitate collaboration across subject areas, so I have submitted a grant proposal with the Wikimedia Foundation for the "WikiProject X" project. WikiProject X will study what makes WikiProjects succeed in retaining editors and then design a prototype WikiProject system that will recruit contributors to WikiProjects and help them run effectively. Please review the proposal here and leave feedback. If you have any questions, you can ask on the proposal page or leave a message on my talk page. Thank you for your time! You may have received a message from me earlier asking you to comment on my WikiProject X proposal. The good news is that WikiProject X is now live! In our first phase, we are focusing on research. If you or your WikiProject are interested, check us out! Note that this is an opt-in program; no WikiProject will be required to change anything against its wishes. You can't review it, you dont have 500 article space edits. But as someone just on the border of 500 article edits, I'd be willing to quickly break through the barrier and approve/reject it on your behalf, if you want to look through and make a summary of why it should pass/fail. Or is that loop holing the rules too much? (I'd also be willing to look through the article myself if you want.) Bosstopher (talk) 12:42, 14 February 2015 (UTC)

The past few months, I've been putting effort into reviving the Webcomic Task Force, with little results. I contacted WikiProject Comics about it, but for some reason, it didn't even cross my mind to contact this WikiProject. One of the articles I have created last month was History of webcomics, one which I rated of high importance to this project. The inactivity of the webcomics project has resulted in increasingly few webcomic articles have been made in recent years. This is a one-time-only message to inform you about a technical proposal to revive your Popular Pages list in the 2016 Community Wishlist Survey that I think you may be interested in reviewing and perhaps even voting for:

If the above proposal gets in the Top 10 based on the votes, there is a high likelihood of this bot being restored so your project will again see monthly updates of popular pages.

Further, there are over 260 proposals in all to review and vote for, across many aspects of wikis.

Thank you for your consideration. Please note that voting for proposals continues through December 12, 2016.

Proposed deletion of Baby mugging

The article Baby mugging has been proposed for deletion because of the following concern:

Extremely limited content, little to no chance of expansion. Fails to pass 4 and 8 - The article, the link from from Internet Phenomena, and all of the references (except for the daily mail which appeared to be of extremely limited content) mentioned the creator by name and associated website. The article sounds like a free plug for the bloggers website, or a misguided bio of a living person.

While all constructive contributions to Wikipedia are appreciated, content or articles may be deleted for any of several reasons.

You may prevent the proposed deletion by removing the {{proposed deletion/dated}} notice, but please explain why in your edit summary or on the article's talk page.

Please consider improving the article to address the issues raised. Removing {{proposed deletion/dated}} will stop the proposed deletion process, but other deletion processes exist. In particular, the speedy deletion process can result in deletion without discussion, and articles for deletion allows discussion to reach consensus for deletion. PROD Baby Mugging

Note: The WP:PROD request has been declined. I am going to resubmit for AfD, as I still believe the content of the article falls within the confines of deletion. Popular pages report

We – Community Tech – are happy to announce that the Popular pages bot is back up-and-running (after a one year hiatus)! You're receiving this message because your WikiProject or task force is signed up to receive the popular pages report. Every month, Community Tech bot will post at Wikipedia:WikiProject Internet culture/Archive 2/Popular pages with a list of the most-viewed pages over the previous month that are within the scope of WikiProject Internet culture.

We've made some enhancements to the original report. Here's what's new:

  • The pageview data includes both desktop and mobile data.
  • The report will include a link to the pageviews tool for each article, to dig deeper into any surprises or anomalies.
  • The report will include the total pageviews for the entire project (including redirects).

We're grateful to Mr.Z-man for his original Mr.Z-bot, and we wish his bot a happy robot retirement. Just as before, we hope the popular pages reports will aid you in understanding the reach of WikiProject Internet culture, and what articles may be deserving of more attention. If you have any questions or concerns please contact us at m:User talk:Community Tech bot.

Input on name change and new draft for Uproxx and Brobible owner

Hello! I'm reaching out here to see if members of this WikiProject are interested to review some updates for digital media company, Uproxx Media Group (formerly Woven Digital), which owns sites including Uproxx and BroBible. On behalf of the company, I have written an updated draft to improve the current article and in my edit request, I've also proposed moving the article to the company's new name, Uproxx Media Group. As I do have a conflict of interest, I'm looking for neutral editors to review the proposed draft and provide thoughts on the name change suggestion. Would anyone here be able to help? Email addresses? providers?

I have a problem with understanding which email is connected to which provider. Such as: Hotmail - apparently it is a Microsoft email but how would you know it? iCloud is an Apple email but who would know except a Apple user/device owner? I have actually called Microsoft for help with a Google email problem. Could there be an article which lists some of the various "@example.com " sites or addresses out there? I have to sign on to some devices I have with a "Microsoft account" or an "Apple account" but didn't know which of my emails was considered Microsoft. (It is sort of a dyslexia type problem with me). WikiProject collaboration notice from the Portals WikiProject

The reason I am contacting you is because there are one or more portals that fall under this subject, and the Portals WikiProject is currently undertaking a major drive to automate portals that may affect them.

Portals are being redesigned.

The new design features are being applied to existing portals.

At present, we are gearing up for a maintenance pass of portals in which the introduction section will be upgraded to no longer need a subpage. In place of static copied and pasted excerpts will be self-updating excerpts displayed through selective transclusion, using the template {{Transclude lead excerpt}}.

The discussion about this can be found here.

Maintainers of specific portals are encouraged to sign up as project members here, noting the portals they maintain, so that those portals are skipped by the maintenance pass. Currently, we are interested in upgrading neglected and abandoned portals. There will be opportunity for maintained portals to opt-in later, or the portal maintainers can handle upgrading (the portals they maintain) personally at any time.

Background

On April 8th, 2018, an RfC ("Request for comment") proposal was made to eliminate all portals and the portal namespace. On April 17th, the Portals WikiProject was rebooted to handle the revitalization of the portal system. On May 12th, the RfC was closed with the result to keep portals, by a margin of about 2 to 1 in favor of keeping portals.

There's an article in the current edition of the Signpost interviewing project members about the RfC and the Portals WikiProject.

Since the reboot, the Portals WikiProject has been busy building tools and components to upgrade portals.

So far, 84 editors have joined.

If you would like to keep abreast of what is happening with portals, see the newsletter archive.

If you have any questions about what is happening with portals or the Portals WikiProject, please post them on the WikiProject's talk page.

Thank you.    — The Transhumanist   10:58, 31 May 2018 (UTC)

HELP WANTED

For a number of years we have been experiencing a steady decline in the number of administrators as a result of attrition and a declining number of editors willing to consider adminship. Things have reached a point where we are starting to experience chronic backlogs in important areas of the project including noticeboards, requests for closure, SPI, CSD & etc. If you are an experienced editor with around two years (or more) of tenure, 10k edits give or take and no record of seriously disruptive behavior, please consider if you might be willing to help out the community by becoming an administrator. The community can only function as well as we all are willing to participate. If you are interested start by reading WP:MOP and WP:RFAADVICE. Then go to WP:ORCP and open a discussion. Over the next few days experienced editors will take a look at your record and let you know what they think your chances are of passing RfA (the three most terrifying letters on Wikipedia) as well as provide you with feedback on areas that might be of concern and how to prepare yourself. Lastly you can find a list of experienced editors who may be willing to nominate you here. Finally, I may not have this page on my watchlist, so if you want to reply to me directly please ping me. New game: "Bloodstreams Battles Online"

Hi,

This may be a request, but Bloodstreams Battles Online may or may not need an article creation. It's a brand new web browser game (like Cookie Clicker) I had conceived around October 2017 that I'm currently making under the Bloodstreams Corporation name, set for a November 10, 2019 release date.

Info about the game: Online will feature over 214+ characters, a character creation tool (remember this from Soulcalibur III and/or Mortal Kombat: Armageddon?), stage creation (from Super Smash Bros. Brawl and future titles), and a story mode where Lyndon Johnson travels in time to defeat both historical figures and fictional characters of the Bloodstreams Battles series as an attempt to deceive "Corruption Dragon", who starts a fictional war called in-game as "World War III", as a result of him losing the tournament the game prior, which not only follows, but is the unknown 2017 title, Bloodstreams Battles: Zero Hour.

We'd like to collect information on how the current tool is used by....you! How do you yourself and the other maintainers of your project use the web tool? Which of its features do you need? How frequently do you use these features? And what features is the tool missing that would be useful to you? Shock Sites Revisions

Hello! I have been revising the Shock Site page as previously there was very little information about it. I integrated the old information into the sections I added about History, Legality, Morality and Media when I first revised the page. Would anyone be willing/able to look at the site and make recommendations of any more changes to make? Additionally, another user asked to add back the original information at the end under "Examples", which means the information is now duplicated. I am considering removing it from the other sections, but that means the Media section will likely have to be removed as there will be little information and leaving BestGore out of the History section feels like missing part of the story (so to speak). Do you have any advice on what I should do? -Bcstanley1 (talk) 05:00, 12 November 2019 (UTC)

Project YouTube

Hi, WikiProject YouTube appears to be inactive/defunct, i.e., there are no obvious activities, also see WT:WikiProject YouTube#Closing shop? with some related alerts since December 2019. Zombie projects are bad for lots of reasons, and one possible way to fix this could be to merge everything YouTube to your project, because a project with a focus on one Google company is anyway odd, e.g., Social in the City is (now) about Internet culture including Instagram, Twitch, and YouTube.
I'm talking about roughly 1,200 pages, and some (many?) are already also covered here. Counter-example, so far Kim Iversen is not covered here, journalism on YouTube is fine, but not exactly my idea of "Internet culture". Similar example, Emma Blackery as VidCon + SitC panelist should be okay here, but if she were only a musician on YouTube this wouldn't be clear.
What do you think of "inheriting" project YouTube almost wholesale, assuming that it ends up as defunct and not only inactive? Presumably that would be a bot job, for all talk pages in namespace 1 (article talk pages) remove project YouTube and if necessary add project Internet culture. –84.46.53.188 (talk) 04:06, 18 February 2020 (UTC)

What are those "lots of reasons"? Please link or list. · · · Peter Southwood (talk): 16:20, 18 February 2020 (UTC)
WT:WikiProject YouTube#Closing shop? Apart from checking AFDs + PRODs projects could help with reassessments on the way to class=A and/or offer up to date article guidelines. One good example I'm aware of is the project for albums. –84.46.52.151 (talk) 04:41, 20 February 2020 (UTC)

WP:ONEWAY questions and case study

Hello: I'm curious to know if there's a precedent for dealing with the following issue:

Suppose some online community exists that is focused on some given theme. If both the community and the theme have wiki pages, and the community page links to the theme page, what sort of standard of notability (or otherwise) should be used to decide whether the theme page should link to the community page?

The specific practical version of this question that I'm concerned about now is whether links should be included from Masturbation to NoFap. This is discussed on the relevant talk page: Talk:Masturbation#MEDRS. Critics have suggested that NoFap is not notable and that it represents a "fringe" view. However, it has 200000 members at present and has been around since 2011, so to me it seems stable and significant enough to mention, if it is suitably contextualised. There are plenty of articles in the popular press linking the topics, and some research articles as well. However, there is some disagreement on the issue, given that NoFap is not "mainstream". Please comment on the above-mentioned talk page if you have a chance. Thanks! I'll be interested to learn your point of view. Arided (talk)

A belated answer: NoFap is notable. It is just that WP:ONEWAY applies to the article Masturbation. There are many phenomena which are notable because of WP:FRIND WP:RS, but we do not mention them in articles upon mainstream topics. Tgeorgescu (talk) 03:32, 28 March 2021 (UTC)

(Redacted) Christine Weston Chandler

Chris Chan has had at least two articles about them deleted and salted. There is no doubt that they meet notability standards now. A google search reveals sources by the New York Post, Yahoo, the Insider and more. Chris is the poster child for internet bullying and trolling and any article we make will be brutalized regularly. How should we proceed? --AdamF in MO (talk) 00:59, 5 August 2021 (UTC)

I have redacted her deadname from the section title. She is a vulnerable private individual and we should not be bandying her name (never-mind her deadname!) about like this. It only helps the trolls. --DanielRigal (talk) 19:30, 5 August 2021 (UTC)
  • 1.) I'm curious why you consider her a private individual. She approved a book written about her [1], and makes public videos and tweets for thousands of followers on youtube and twitter.
  • 2.) This is just my opinion, but by not having a non-pov and well-sourced article about her, I believe you achieve the exact opposite in regards to helping trolls. Assuming it meets notability standards, a wikipedia article would act as a counter-balance to sites like kiwifarms and sonichu.com, which are written with an anti-Christine agenda.Hoponpop69 (talk) 14:20, 6 August 2021 (UTC)
She is an extremely vulnerable person who is relatively easily tricked into agreeing to things that are not in her interests and which can be dishonestly presented to make her look bad. I have no idea whether she really did approve that book in any meaningful way. The book is self-published, by an non-notable author, and absolutely worthless when it comes to demonstrating notability anyway. I don't believe that a non-POV article is possible as pretty much the only people who write about her publicly are people who have, at least to some degree, bought into the sick harassment cult that is hounding her. Maybe they don't approve of the harassment but they have been persuaded that there is a legitimate subject of interest in her and that really is not the case. I don't believe that there is any way to write an article about her that does not implicitly legitimise the doxxing and harassment. There is no BLP in this! Where there is scope for limited and very careful coverage is in the harassment cult itself. The legitimate article here is one about KF. They are the story. Chandler is just one of their victims. --DanielRigal (talk) 14:52, 8 August 2021 (UTC)
The story is now gaining mainstream coverage such as its feature on Fox News in a primetime segment and The New York Post article. Whether or not you agree with its culture war framing by right wing outlets is another matter, but it has breached the mainstream and absolutely is notable enough for an article at this point. It has been trending on Twitter for nearly two weeks, with coverage not only from the press but celebrities, reporters (Dave Weigel of the Washington Post off the top of my head), and countless other Internet personalities of a higher profile (including a plethora of videos about the subject on YouTube). Suffice to say, the cat is out of the bag on this one and it is now both mainstream news and an undeniable part of Internet history that played a huge role in shaping the culture of numerous sites that *are* notable enough for an article (4chan, Encyclopedia Dramatica, Kiwi Farms, etc.). It is not equivalent at all to doxxing at this point because almost of the details have been covered by traditional publications. Whether or not it is in their interest is irrelevant to the notability of the subject for Wikipedia. This needs an article. 2603:8000:B343:77B1:9108:DAE9:4AFA:523D (talk) 23:08, 9 August 2021 (UTC)

User script to detect unreliable sources

I have (with the help of others) made a small user script to detect and highlight various links to unreliable sources and predatory journals. Some of you may already be familiar with it, given it is currently the 39th most imported script on Wikipedia. The idea is that it takes something like

  • John Smith "Article of things" Deprecated.com. Accessed 2020-02-14. (John Smith "[https://www.deprecated.com/article Article of things]" ''Deprecated.com''. Accessed 2020-02-14.)

and turns it into something like

It will work on a variety of links, including those from {{cite web}}, {{cite journal}} and {{doi}}.

The script is mostly based on WP:RSPSOURCES, WP:NPPSG and WP:CITEWATCH and a good dose of common sense. I'm always expanding coverage and tweaking the script's logic, so general feedback and suggestions to expand coverage to other unreliable sources are always welcomed.

Do note that this is not a script to be mindlessly used, and several caveats apply. Details and instructions are available at User:Headbomb/unreliable. Questions, comments and requests can be made at User talk:Headbomb/unreliable.

Recommended sources list

Might we compile a list of recommended sources for participants of the project to use for internet culture topics?

Some wikiprojects link lists like that. on their project page. The Daily Dot is the only source dedicated to internet culture at WP:RSPS, so we could compile our own list, since that list is just for perennially discussed sources. Two others I can come up with are First Monday and Le Monde's "Pixels" section which has both a French and English edition. Chillabit (talk) 01:49, 7 September 2022 (UTC)

You might want to check out Wikipedia:Notability and Wikipedia:Reliable sources for Wikipedia guidelines on what warrants an article. I'd say do a Google search of the guy, and if you find at least two reliable third-party sources (meaning news articles, profiles, book mentions etc. that aren't published by him or someone associated with him) and there's enough verifiable and notable information to fill out an article, you're probably good. You also might want to check out other YouTuber articles like Hbomberguy, Anthony Fantano, and Jenna Marbles to get an idea of what notability in that area looks like. Project-independent quality assessments

Quality assessments by Wikipedia editors rate articles in terms of completeness, organization, prose quality, sourcing, etc. Most wikiprojects follow the general guidelines at Wikipedia:Content assessment, but some have specialized assessment guidelines. A recent Village pump proposal was approved and has been implemented to add a |class= parameter to {{WikiProject banner shell}}, which can display a general quality assessment for an article, and to let project banner templates "inherit" this assessment.

No action is required if your wikiproject follows the standard assessment approach. Over time, quality assessments will be migrated up to {{WikiProject banner shell}}, and your project banner will automatically "inherit" any changes to the general assessments for the purpose of assigning categories.

However, if your project has decided to "opt out" and follow a non-standard quality assessment approach, all you have to do is modify your wikiproject banner template to pass {{WPBannerMeta}} a new |QUALITY_CRITERIA=custom parameter. If this is done, changes to the general quality assessment will be ignored, and your project-level assessment will be displayed and used to create categories, as at present. Looking for help to improve Plastic Love

Hey everyone, I've been working the last month or so to improve the article for "Plastic Love" with the goal of getting to GA or FA in the future. I think I've scoured the internet thoroughly enough to find and use most reputable English-language sources, and I've been able to find a handful of Japanese ones with the help of Google Translate. That being said, I think the article could still use some work - specifically on its critical reception and on the actual recording process of the song itself. As it is right now, the article relies mostly on English-language sources, so I'm not sure it's at the best state it could be.

Ideally, this article would include contemporaneous media coverage in the 80s of the album (think album reviews, news pieces, etc.), modern articles which discuss the song from a critical or retrospective lens, or interviews with Takeuchi herself. However, I don't speak or read Japanese, so I'm kind of limited in how I can research here. If anyone who does have a knowledge of Japanese and has access to these sorts of resources is able, I would greatly appreciate your help in this research. Toa Nidhiki05 19:04, 23 August 2023 (UTC)
