WP 1.0 bot announcement[edit]

This message is being sent to each WikiProject that participates in the WP 1.0 assessment system. On Saturday, January 23, 2010, the WP 1.0 bot will be upgraded. Your project does not need to take any action, but the appearance of your project's summary table will change. The upgrade will make many new, optional features available to all WikiProjects. Additional information is available at the WP 1.0 project homepage. — Carl (CBM · talk) 03:27, 22 January 2010 (UTC)

Portal:Iowa[edit]

There is a push to create wp:portals for all states. For now I have made Portal:Iowa a redirect to the Outline of Iowa as a stopgap. There are already a lot of pages funneled through this redirect. Anyone willing to make a proper Iowa Portal? Thanks, Bill Whittaker (talk) 16:09, 29 January 2010 (UTC)

If any spare time shows up for me (unlikely, but I can dream, right?) I'll start working on one. I'd suggest Davenport, Iowa (A-Class) for our first selected article, with Iowa (main topic) and USS Iowa (BB-61) (FA-Class) as the next selected articles.
We seem to have quite a few good images - possible images include File:Americangothic.jpg (Iowa ties), File:Fountain of Four Seasons.jpg (ISU), File:ISU campanile.jpg (ISU), File:Old capital iowa city.jpg (Old Capitol/U of I), File:Iowa capitol.jpg (Capitol), File:Flag of Iowa.svg (Flag), File:Iowa and Nebraska lands10.jpg (Iowa land poster), File:Iowa.JPG (Welcome to Iowa sign), File:Iowa.JPG (Iowa seal w/ motto), File:Iowa quarter, reverse side, 2004.png (Iowa quarter). Am I missing any obvious articles or pictures?--Philosopher Let us reason together. 21:20, 29 January 2010 (UTC)
...and don't forget one of Iowa's icons - the Iowa butter cow (File:Butter Cow.jpg)! Unfortunately this head-on image has too much glare to automatically put it in my list above (with apologies to the photographer). --Philosopher Let us reason together. 21:28, 29 January 2010 (UTC)
Phil- Sounds like a good plan. Thanks! Bill Whittaker (talk) 14:15, 5 February 2010 (UTC)
I concur. CTJF83 chat 19:01, 5 February 2010 (UTC)

Unreferenced living people articles bot[edit]

User:DASHBot/Wikiprojects provides a list, updated daily, of unreferenced living people articles (BLPs) related to your project. There has been a lot of discussion recently about deleting these unreferenced articles, so it is important that these articles are referenced.

The unreferenced articles related to your project can be found at >>>Wikipedia:WikiProject Iowa/Unreferenced BLPs<<<

If you do not want this wikiproject to participate, please add your project name to this list.

Thank you.

Update: Wikipedia:WikiProject Iowa/Unreferenced BLPs has been created. This list, which is updated by User:DASHBot/Wikiprojects daily, will allow your wikiproject to quickly identify unreferenced living person articles.
There maybe no or few articles on this new Unreferenced BLPs page. To increase the overall number of articles in your project with another bot, you can sign up for User:Xenobot_Mk_V#Instructions.
If you have any questions or concerns, visit User talk:DASHBot/Wikiprojects. Okip 00:44, 28 March 2010 (UTC)

I have cleaned up all articles that are under both Category:People from Iowa and under Category:Unreferenced BLPs to date. J. Edgar Vekilnik, Jr. (talk) 02:20, 2 January 2011 (UTC)

Iowa Portal[edit]

It has been proposed that the Portal:Iowa seen on hundreds of pages be turned into a dead-end red link, rather than a redirect to the Outline of Iowa. I'm scratchin' my head over this one- why anyone thinks this would improve Wikipedia is beyond me. Follow the link at Portal:Iowa for more info. Bill Whittaker (talk) 20:10, 19 April 2010 (UTC)

FYI, {{Iowa portal}} has been nominated for deletion; the portal itself does not exist. 70.29.210.155 (talk) 05:02, 24 May 2010 (UTC)
The portal now exists, and the portal template has now been replaced by {{portal|Iowa}}. Thanks! Plastikspork ―Œ(talk) 01:49, 3 June 2010 (UTC)

Robert V. Hogg of the University of Iowa[edit]

I would appreciate help on improviding the article on the statistician Robert V. Hogg of the University of Iowa. Apparently, the article has been nominated for Did you know-status. In particular, it would be good for an Iowa-savvy editor to contact the public-relations office of the University of Iowa and obtain a picture of Professor Hogg. Thanks. Kiefer.Wolfowitz (talk) 04:29, 16 May 2010 (UTC)

I'm on it. Bill Whittaker (talk) 13:42, 17 May 2010 (UTC)
Now I know how Jules felt when Marcellus Wallace dispatched Winston Wolf! :) Thanks, Kiefer.Wolfowitz (talk) 16:27, 17 May 2010 (UTC)
Hope Wolf had better luck than I did. Photo services says the web images of Hogg are not theirs (this is fine, since they charge money), but I have not had any luck getting the Stats department to repond to my request. If anyone gets back to me I'll let you know. Bill Whittaker (talk) 16:46, 18 May 2010 (UTC)
Thanks for trying. BTW: It appears that the the article has passed at least the first vetting of the Did you know? process. 19:11, 23 May 2010 (UTC)~
The hook about ASA President "Boss Hogg" has been queued to DYK. Kiefer.Wolfowitz (talk) 21:13, 23 May 2010 (UTC)
According to the webpage on Wikipedia article traffic statistics, roughly 1,300 persons followed the DYK lead to the Robert V. Hogg article on 24 May 2010. (FYI) Thanks, Kiefer.Wolfowitz (talk) 18:56, 3 June 2010 (UTC)

Oscar Kempthorne of Iowa State University[edit]

Another statistician, Professor Oscar Kempthorne (deceased) of Iowa State University, also needs a picture. His article could use expansion also. Thanks, Kiefer.Wolfowitz (talk) 04:29, 16 May 2010 (UTC)

List of United States federal courthouses in Iowa[edit]

This page has been initiated - any help in filling in missing federal courthouses, or providing missing information on listed courthouses (especially pictures) would be appreciated. Cheers! bd2412 T 15:04, 27 June 2010 (UTC)

A History of Iowa[edit]

I note Wikisource has :

http://en.wikisource.org/wiki/History_of_Iowa_From_the_Earliest_Times_to_the_Beginning_of_the_Twentieth_Century

Anyone able to consider writing further volumes to cover the 20 the century?

A very rough outline would be something like this in terms of periods..

- 1900-1910
- 1910-1920
- 20's boom followed by crash
- Depression era..
- Rossevelt's Reforms...
- World War II
- Post War Recovery
- Red Scares and Atom fears
- 60's
- 70's
- Regan Era
- Clinton Era...

I'd appreciate someone knowing more about this expanding the outline for possible use as a basis page for efforts on Wikibooks :) ShakespeareFan00 (talk) 14:13, 3 September 2010 (UTC)

Iowa articles have been selected for the Wikipedia 0.8 release[edit]

Version 0.8 is a collection of Wikipedia articles selected by the Wikipedia 1.0 team for offline release on USB key, DVD and mobile phone. Articles were selected based on their assessed importance and quality, then article versions (revisionIDs) were chosen for trustworthiness (freedom from vandalism) using an adaptation of the WikiTrust algorithm.

We would like to ask you to review the Iowa articles and revisionIDs we have chosen. Selected articles are marked with a diamond symbol (♦) to the right of each article, and this symbol links to the selected version of each article. If you believe we have included or excluded articles inappropriately, please contact us at Wikipedia talk:Version 0.8 with the details. You may wish to look at your WikiProject's articles with cleanup tags and try to improve any that need work; if you do, please give us the new revisionID at Wikipedia talk:Version 0.8. We would like to complete this consultation period by midnight UTC on Monday, October 11th.

We have greatly streamlined the process since the Version 0.7 release, so we aim to have the collection ready for distribution by the end of November, 2010. As a result, we are planning to distribute the collection much more widely, while continuing to work with groups such as One Laptop per Child and Wikipedia for Schools to extend the reach of Wikipedia worldwide. Please help us, with your WikiProject's feedback!

Followup

Many thanks for this feedback. Glancing at the list, they all looked to be excellent suggestions and I had expected to include all or nearly all of them. However, I found that most of them are only Start-Class, and they get surprisingly (to me) little traffic. It may be that the low traffic is somewhat related to the lack of content; I can't see any other reason what an article like Iowa Territory would only get 35 hits per day (For comparison Indian Territory, albeit also weak, gets 259 hits/day). We did include Chet Culver, Terry Branstad and Iowa State University. I'd like to request that you improve the others on the proposal list (Iowa General Assembly, Robert Lucas (governor) and Iowa Territory) up to B-Class in time for our first major release (Version 1.0) early next year. Would that be possible? Thanks again, Walkerma (talk) 16:38, 30 November 2010 (UTC)

WikiProject cleanup listing[edit]

I have created together with Smallman12q a toolserver tool that shows a weekly-updated list of cleanup categories for WikiProjects, that can be used as a replacement for WolterBot and this WikiProject is among those that are already included (because it is a member of Category:WolterBot cleanup listing subscriptions). See the tool's wiki page, this project's listing in one big table or by categories and the index of WikiProjects. Svick (talk) 20:49, 7 November 2010 (UTC)

Invitation to help with WikiProject United States[edit]

Hello, WikiProject Iowa! We are looking for editors to join WikiProject United States, an outreach effort which aims to support development of United States related articles in Wikipedia. We thought you might be interested, and hope that you will join us. Thanks!!!

A consideration for cross project consolidation of talk page templates[edit]

I have started a conversation here about the possibility of combining some of the United States related WikiProject Banners into {{WikiProject United States}}. If you have any comments, questions or suggestions please take a moment and let me know. --Kumioko (talk) 19:49, 27 November 2010 (UTC)

US Collaboration reactivated & Portal:United States starting next[edit]

Casliber recently posted a suggestion on the talk page for WikiProject United States about getting the US Wikipedians Collaboration page going again in an effort to build up articles for GA through FA class. See Wikipedia:U.S. Wikipedians' notice board/USCOTM. After several days of work from him the page is up and ready for action. A few candidates have already been added for you to vote on or you can submit one using the directions provided. If you are looking for inspiration here is a link to the most commonly viewed articles currently under the scope of Wikiproject United States. There are tons of good articles in the various US related projects as well so feel free to submit any article relating to US topics (not just those under the scope of WPUS). This noticeboard is intended for ‘’’All’’’ editors working on US subjects, not just those under WPUS.

The next item I intend to start updating is Portal:United States if anyone is interested in helping. Again this is not specific to WPUS and any help would be greatly appreciated to maximize visibility of US topics. The foundation has already been established its just a matter of updating the content with some new images, biographies and articles. Please let leave a comment on the Portals talk page or let me know if you have any questions or ideas. --Kumioko (talk) 19:11, 15 January 2011 (UTC)

Adding "Popular pages" to U.S.-related projects[edit]

A very interesting tool of the Wikimedia Toolserver is called WikiProject Popular pages lists. These lists are similar to project-related article lists like U. S. article lists used for generating assessment statistics. The Popular pages lists include the rank, total views, average daily views, quality and importance ratings for the listed articles. Here is the full list of projects using popular pages lists. An FAQ also is available at User:Mr.Z-man/Popular pages FAQ.

I recently added links to lists of popular pages as shown below to the U.S. Portal - WikiProjects box and the nominations sections for each of the selected articles boxes.

Portal:United States/Projects/Popular pages

Because this project was not included, I am bringing up the popular pages tool here. This tool makes it very easy to track three of four balancing dimensions when selecting articles for showcasing at a portal - quality, importance and popularity. When tracking the fourth dimension, topic, the related article lists tool (such as for U.S. article lists tool) also might be useful by filtering on categories of interest.

If you do decide to use this tool, feel free to update Portal:United States/Projects/Popular pages as well.

Suggestion for WikiProject United States to support WikiProject Iowa[edit]

Someone recently suggested that this project may be inactive or semi-active and that it might be beneficial to include it in the list of projects supported by WikiProject United States. After reviewing the project it appears that there has been no active discussions in several months and very few edits made to the project page. Please feel free to contact me if there are any comments or questions. --Kumioko (talk) 00:55, 3 September 2011 (UTC)

This discussion has been open for 6 days without comment. Does anyone have any comments about this suggestion? --Kumioko (talk) 20:35, 9 September 2011 (UTC)
This discussion has been open for 12 days without comment so I am going to go ahead and add it to the supported projects list. --Kumioko (talk) 01:58, 14 September 2011 (UTC)
I'd agree that the project itself is semi-active. The Government workgroup does come to life on a fairly regular schedule, though it isn't at present. However, in the absence of a real issue, this page primarily just serves as a noticeboard for our members. --Philosopher Let us reason together. 06:00, 17 September 2011 (UTC)
I agree, I don't want to pull WP:IOWA under WikiProject United States any time soon. I've worked on the Iowa portal myself a little bit. So, you want me to remove the Iowa WikiProject under WikiProject United States or not? JJ98 (Talk / Contributions) 09:23, 24 October 2011 (UTC)
I see that Iowa is not listed as part of WikiProject United States - and that's how I think it should stay. That said, I have no problem with their linking to us as a "related project." --Philosopher Let us reason together. 18:13, 25 October 2011 (UTC)
Okay, no problem, I will remove it anyway since there is little discussion. In the meantime, why don't you ask Kumioko to not support under WikiProject United States and I will modify the WikiProject Iowa banner myself. JJ98 (Talk / Contributions) 10:21, 11 November 2011 (UTC)
I'm sorry? I don't understand why the banner would need to be modified. Could you please explain? --Philosopher Let us reason together. 11:40, 12 November 2011 (UTC)
I had added Iowa to the supported projects list of WPUS and added it to the WPUS banner after knowone here responded to the post after about 15 days. Thats usually a sign that the project is inactive. I have started to devote my time to other areas anyway cause knowone in WP really cares about making the project better and working together. I'm still going to contribute but not what I was doing before since knowone else seems to care. --Kumioko (talk) 14:38, 12 November 2011 (UTC)
In the next couple days I will remove the Iowa projects from the list of projects supported by WPUS. It just takes a day or 2 to get the template updated. --Kumioko (talk) 19:55, 21 November 2011 (UTC)

WikiWomen's History Month[edit]

Hi everyone. March is Women's History Month and I'm hoping a few folks here at WP:Iowa will have interest in putting on events (on and off wiki) related to women's roles in Iowa's history, society and culture. We've created an event page on English Wikipedia (please translate!) and I hope you'll find the inspiration to participate. These events can take place off wiki, like edit-a-thons, or on wiki, such as themes and translations. Please visit the page here: WikiWomen's History Month. Thanks for your consideration and I look forward to seeing events take place! SarahStierch (talk) 00:09, 2 February 2012 (UTC)

Villisca Axe Murders articles[edit]

I have been working on cleaning up the Villisca Axe Murders article. As the article had information irrelevant to the crime and investigation, I moved some of the content to a new article, Josiah B. and Sara Moore House. I have added Iowa-related stubs to the article and the {{WikiProject Iowa}} to the talk page.

I find the story very interesting, but unfortunately the original article lacks proper citations. I have found a few sources for national newspapers from 1912 to around 1930. These cover the trial and some of the investigation, but I have found little that covers the investigation to detail that has been written in the Wikipedia article. Is there anyone who has access to quality sources of information?

Cheers. Encycloshave (talk) 04:21, 9 February 2012 (UTC)

Commons legislative galleries[edit]

In case anyone's interested, I've created a few Commons galleries for Iowa legislators for the 81st through 84th General Assemblies. Bob Feller Farm Photo[edit]

The Feller Farmstead, a national registered historic place, is NE of Van Meter in Dallas County. There is a house and is or was a red barn. The barn may have recently collapsed, I'm not sure. I'm working on a article for this NRHP. Is there someone that has or can get a photo of the house and/or barn? Much thanks! PumpkinSky talk 02:35, 13 April 2013 (UTC)

Photo of Chief Wapello statue[edit]

Hello! Posting this info for any of the Iowa group wh may be within easy driving distance of Ottumwa. The large (450 lb) statue of Chief Wapello -- created originally circa 120 yrs ago -- will be on display inside the Wapello County courthouse in Otumwa for the next few weeks. This statue normally resides atop the courthouse however it was damaged by a t-storm in June 2012 and has undergone repair and restoration. That work is now complete and probably sometime in July it will return to its rooftop location five stories up.

My point: Only twice before (last in the 1950s) in its history has the rather ornate statue been on ground level. This would be a most opportune time for someone to take a photo and upload to Wikipedia Commons for addition to the Chief Wapello and Wapello County articls. Statue photos get rather tricky (licensing wise) sometimes, but considering the original age I think it would qualify as Public Domain, the orginal creator being long since dead. I live in Missouri and cannot make it to Ottumwa to snap a photo, but I thought I'd alert the Iowa Wikiproject group about it in case someone wanted to take up the task. Best regards, Sector001 (talk) 07:31, 4 June 2013 (UTC)

Revision of "Antoine LeClaire" article (métis trader from Iowa)[edit]

To whom it may concern,

Unless one can source it, I highly doubt the authenticity of the following statement: "His father, Francois LeClaire, was French Canadian and came to the Americas with Lafayette."

The LeClaire name came to Québec (part of French North America) probably sometime in the late 1600s or early 1700s. This would have been way before the time of Lafayette and the American War of Independence in the 1770s...

The French in Québec (as well as métis further west) and the French soldiers of Lafayette who came from France are not the same... Moreover, I doubt French soldiers of Lafayette (coming from France) would have stayed and settled in Québec after the US War of Independence since at that time Québec (and all of French Canada) was ruled by the British, having officially taken it over in a 1763 treaty. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Acadien42 (talkcontribs) 17:28, 3 September 2013 (UTC)

I'm sure you've resolved this by now, but a dubious unsourced statement like this can generally be removed. Unfortunately, I don't know anything about the topic, so can't help out. – Philosopher Let us reason together. 03:51, 4 November 2013 (UTC)

Town Photo Collection Now Available[edit]

Hi Iowa Wikipedians! Long time. Just wanted to let you know that I have finally put my collection of 7204 photographs from 213 towns in 59 counties in Iowa on line. They can be found at: http://digital.lib.uiowa.edu/cdm/search/collection/iowatowns
