[edit] Miro on Linux

Hi, I very much like the idea of free and open video, I am using a free and open OS since a long time now and think that free software is totally important, so open video will be!

BUT why is THIS http://www.mirovideoconverter.com/ not availyble for Ubuntu Linux??? —Preceding unsigned comment added by 62.143.152.104 (talk) 11:26, 28 April 2010

[edit] Simpler workflow

Someone might like to mention on the Project page that if editors use Clesh instead of the already-mentioned iMovie or Windows Movie Maker, they can export videos directly into Ogg format ready for upload into Wikipedia. This simplifies the process somewhat. Clesh runs in a browser, and so works on most Macs, PCs (and many Linux machines) without installation. Stephen B Streater (talk) 19:57, 5 July 2010 (UTC)

[edit] can't upload

[edit] WikiProject Lights Camera Wiki/Wildlife and Earth Touch

Why do the example movies have earth-touch.com logos on them? I thought Wiki didn't endorse other websites like that. This is supposed to be free content, nobody wants to use something with another website's logo on it. Not that I've got anything against Earth-touch.com, they do some excellent work, but Wikipedia shouldn't be advertising for them. --Calibas (talk) 06:19, 13 September 2010 (UTC)

Yes, I agree. What's this about? —innotata 14:25, 13 September 2010 (UTC)
I left some questions for User:Totallynuts and invited him to discuss here. He's the one that added the Earth Touch stuff to the site. --Calibas (talk) 17:11, 13 September 2010 (UTC)

More on Earth Touch: The content there is not under an open license "you acquire no rights other than the right to download materials for personal, non-commercial use, and you undertake not to use materials in any other way", and it's sold commercially "we survive by selling our content through traditional media channels like television". I'm not sure exactly what Wikipedia has to gain from this partnership. I'm emailing Earth Touch about this. --Calibas (talk) 17:23, 13 September 2010 (UTC)

Clarification about Earth Touch: The example movie with the logo was just that, an example movie created before we had proper access to the plain video files. The videos that have been used in actual articles as at Hippopotamus (see also Commons:Category:Images from Earth-Touch), are without the logo and have been specifically put under a CC-BY-SA 3.0 License.--Pharos (talk) 17:35, 13 September 2010 (UTC)
Cool, that makes me feel much better about the whole thing. Thanks for the clarification. --Calibas (talk) 16:08, 14 September 2010 (UTC)

[edit] From LCW

What's the difference between a video "from Lights Camera Wiki", and one not from the project? Is it that the LCW ones are uploaded directly to en, while ordinary ones are uploaded to Commons? If so, how can LCW be good? Jim.henderson (talk) 10:25, 16 September 2010 (UTC)

There isn't any sharp difference between LCW videos and non-LCW videos; "Lights Camera Wiki" is really just an initiative to encourage video contributions in general, and does this through providing tutorials, background materials, and illustrative examples of subjects in which work can be helpfully contributed. Of course these videos should be uploaded as other media, to Wikimedia Commons rather than just to English Wikipedia.--Pharos (talk) 01:06, 29 September 2010 (UTC)

Yeah, I should have read more and thought more before writing. By coincidence, yesterday I put a small video into Trikke, for which neither a true video camera nor a tripod was available (on my way home from photographing the Hudson River Museum I spotted an opportunity that called for motion). I didn't edit it or replace the sound track with a narration, not having studied the tools for that. I didn't say it was "From LCW" because that wouldn't mean anything. So yes, there should be pages with elementary technical advice for budding videographers as well as still photographers, sound recordists, digital painters, etc with links to more advanced or detailed external sites, but I don't see much reason to credit the school or book or Wikiproject that led us to understand how to make a good picture. [edit] New WikiVideo mailing list

I'd like to invite folks to join the new WikiVideo-l mailing list, which will cover both creative and technical topics of video on the Wikimedia projects. Old hands and newbies alike are both very welcome!--Pharos (talk) 02:16, 29 September 2010 (UTC)

[edit] Portuguese localization

Hi!

How can we get the Portuguese messages displayed at Portuguese Wikipedia instead of things like "[mwe-enable-gadget]"?

The English message is shown correctly if we add &uselang=en to the URL. If there is no message in Portuguese, I think it should use the English one as fallback. Is that possible? Helder (talk) 20:23, 12 October 2010 (UTC)

Reported at bugzilla:25516. Helder (talk) 22:39, 13 October 2010 (UTC)

[edit] Alternative still photos

Is there any way the Wiki software could offer an option to include an alternative still photo to replace the video when an article is used in print, such as Wikipedia-Books, or other cases where video cannot be displayed? – VisionHolder « talk » 16:08, 1 January 2011 (UTC)

[edit] New Contributions from Alverno College Students

Today my students added videos to the following articles: Alpine skiing, B-boy, Basilica of St. Josaphat, chipmunk, Disc golf, Greendale, Wisconsin, Italian cuisine, Modern dance, Pitch (baseball), and Quinceañera. I'm not sure if all of the videos are appropriately placed within the articles, and I'm open to feedback about how we could improve our approach. We will have another batch of four more videos in the next week. Jgmikulay (talk) 21:43, 5 May 2011 (UTC)

Cool! I've put all of the videos in a category on Wikimedia Commons here: Category:Videos by Alverno College Advanced Media Studies.--Pharos (talk) 23:59, 5 May 2011 (UTC)
Today students added more videos to the following articles: Drum kit, Shorewood, Wisconsin, Hip hop production, Prairie dog, and North Point Lighthouse. Jgmikulay (talk) 13:39, 13 May 2011 (UTC)
