Importance of articles on National Historic Landmarks

I'm beginning to work on a List of National Historic Landmarks in Mississippi and related articles on each of the 38 NHLs in the state. In the process I may create articles on other sites that are listed on the National Register of Historic Places. All of the NHLs are NRHPs. As I go, I am inclined to give each NHL importance rating of "Mid" as for Oakland Memorial Chapel and to give importance rating of "Low" to NRHPs that are not also NHLs, as for Alcorn State University Historic District. FYI, for a corresponding list in Illinois, someone involved in the state wikiproject is giving the NHLs mid importance. Feedback would be welcome. doncram 18:10, 18 October 2007 (UTC)

Battle of Port Gibson/Battle of Raymond

Why would one be listed with importance set to high, and one set to low? Port Gibson turned the Grand Gulf position and doomed Bowen to defeat if he did not retreat. They are both listed as "mid" importance now. Based on the importance scale descriptions at the Mississippi Project, they should probably both be "low" but they were historic so I gave them "mid". Thanks. -- ALLSTARecho 17:15, 17 December 2007 (UTC)

City of Pearl

I noticed that there is a sentence fragment in this article: "But in the mid 1900s the influx of industry and people working in Jackson, in neighboring Hinds county, but residing in Pearl." I didn't know the intent of the author so I didn't change it.NinetyWt (talk) 19:04, 3 February 2008 (UTC)

Hurricane Camille GA Sweeps Review: On Hold

As part of the WikiProject Good Articles, we're doing sweeps to go over all of the current GAs and see if they still meet the GA criteria and I'm specifically going over all of the "Meteorology and atmospheric sciences" articles. I have reviewed Hurricane Camille and believe the article currently meets the majority of the criteria and should remain listed as a Good article. I have left this message at this WikiProject's talk page so that any interested members can assist in helping the article keep its GA status. In reviewing the article, I have found there are some issues that may need to be addressed, and I'll leave the article on hold for seven days for them to be fixed. I have left messages on the talk pages of the main contributors of the article along with other WikiProjects. Please consider helping address the several points that I listed on the talk page of the article, which shouldn't take too long to fix if multiple editors assist in the workload. Zotero - web-based citation manager

Just wanted to let project members know about a great resource - zotero, which can be downloaded for free, is a web-based citation and source/material manager developed by the Dept. for History and New Media at George Mason University near Washington, DC. I've been using it for a few months but am just beginning to capitalize on it and shift from using notes and scraps of paper around my computer! You can take "notes", create tags for notes and articles, books, etc.; download snapshots of title pages, capture URL and titles, access dates, etc. There is more that I have not begun to touch, not yet having made it through the instructional video.--Parkwells (talk) 20:34, 22 May 2008 (UTC)

City, town, or village?

What criteria is used to designate whether a location is a city, a town, or a village: population only or are other factors involved? Every location which takes up a dot on a map should be listed on one of these two articles, correct? Changes to the WP:1.0 bottomssment scheme

As you may have heard, we at the Wikipedia 1.0 Editorial Team recently made some changes to the bottomssment scale, including the addition of a new level. The new description is available at WP:ASSESS.

  • The new C-Class represents articles that are beyond the basic Start-Class, but which need additional references or cleanup to meet the standards for B-Class.
  • The criteria for B-Class have been tightened up with the addition of a rubric, and are now more in line with the stricter standards already used at some projects.
  • A-Class article reviews will now need more than one person, as described here.

Each WikiProject should already have a new C-Class category at Category:C-Class_articles. If your project elects not to use the new level, you can simply delete your WikiProject's C-Class category and clarify any amendments on your project's bottomssment/discussion pages. The bot is already finding and listing C-Class articles.

Please leave a message with us if you have any queries regarding the introduction of the revised scheme. Courthouse Photos

I propose that photos of all Mississippi county courthouses be added to their respective article, and possibly the corresponding county seat article. This would serve to beautify the article and serve as a visual representation of the county. As I Lay Dying disambig

A few months ago a very limited discussion was held by a few editors on an disambig redirect page which is associated with William Faulkner. The result was a claimed "consensus" that the article As I Lay Dying should redirect to As I Lay Dying (disambiguation). The reasoning was that a band named after the novel was now more well known than the novel, meaning the main "As I Lay Dying" phrase shouldn't link only to the novel.

The problem is that as it clearly states here, disambig pages should only be created "If there are three or more topics associated with the same term" and if one of the topics isn't the primary topic. That is not the case here. Since the band is named for the book, the book is the primary topic. In addition, the band's album has part of its title taken from the band's name, meaning there aren't three true items on that disambig page. As a result, the proper course is to have a disambig link at the top of the novel article and allow "As I Lay Dying" to either be the main article or redirect to the main article.

If people want to change this guideline, that is fine. But to do that, we need to have a true consensus building discussion. Please go to this link [1] to voice your opinion on this issue.--SouthernNights (talk) 17:47, 1 January 2009 (UTC)

GA Sweeps invitation

This message is being sent to WikiProjects with GAs under their scope. Since August 2007, WikiProject Good Articles has been participating in GA sweeps. The process helps to ensure that articles that have passed a nomination before that date meet the GA criteria. After nearly two years, the running total has just passed the 50% mark. In order to expediate the reviewing, several changes have been made to the process. A new worklist has been created, detailing which articles are left to review. Instead of reviewing by topic, editors can consider picking and choosing whichever articles they are interested in.

We are always looking for new members to assist with reviewing the remaining articles, and since this project has GAs under its scope, it would be beneficial if any of its members could review a few articles (perhaps your project's articles). Your project's members are likely to be more knowledgeable about your topic GAs then an outside reviewer. As a result, reviewing your project's articles would improve the quality of the review in ensuring that the article meets your project's concerns on sourcing, content, and guidelines. However, members can also review any other article in the worklist to ensure it meets the GA criteria.

If any members are interested, please visit the GA sweeps page for further details and instructions in initiating a review. Pageview stats

After a recent request on my talk page, I added WikiProject Mississippi to the list of projects to compile monthly pageview stats for. The data is the same used by http://stats.grok.se/en/ but the program is different, and includes the aggregate views from all redirects to each page. The stats are at Wikipedia:WikiProject Mississippi/Popular pages.

The page will be updated monthly with new data. The edits aren't marked as bot edits, so they will show up in watchlists. I can also get provide the full data for any project covered by the bot if requested, though I normally don't keep it for much longer than a couple weeks after the list is generated. Changes to popular pages lists

There are a few important changes to the popular pages system. A quick summary:

  • The "importance" ranking (for projects that use it) will be included in the lists along with assessment.
  • The default list size has been lowered to 500 entries (from 1000)
  • I've set up a project on the Toolserver for the popular pages - tools:~alexz/pop/.
    • This includes a page to view the results for projects, including the in-progress results from the current month. Currently this can only show the results from a single project in one month. Features to see multiple projects or multiple months may be added later.
    • This includes a new interface for making requests to add a new project to the list.
    • There is also a form to request a change to the configuration for a project. Currently the configurable options are the size of the on-wiki list and the project subpage used for the list.
  • The on-wiki list should be generated and posted in a more timely and consistent manner than before.
  • The data is now retained indefinitely.
  • The script used to generate the pages has changed. The output should be the same. Please report any apparent inconsistencies (see below).
  • Bugs and feature requests should be reported using the Toolserver's bug tracker for "alexz's tools" - [2]

Rhythm Night Club fire

It seems there is not much being done to fix this article, there are several issues, most related to poorly referenced material, some synthetic material and poor noun choice. I am adopting this article and if you are interested in a mini task force, feel free to help. I am using as a reference the NATIONAL FIRE PROTECTION ASSOCIATION's report, the MISSISSIPPI STATE RATING BUREAU report, and contemporary newspaper reports as references, as and when available.

First step, which will undoubtedly bring helpful attention is to move the article to Rhythm Club fire the Rhythm Club was a Dance hall rather than a Night Club: per NFPA report "DANCE HALL FIRE (RHYTHM CLUB)" ; MISSISSIPPI STATE RATING BUREAU report "The Natchez Dance Hall Holocaust" and illustration captioned as "Layout of the Natchez, Mississippi, Rhythm Club; and newspaper articles referring to it as "the Rhythm Club" and as a "dance hall". I can find no contemporaneous reports referring to it as the "Rhythm Night Club" as a name or as a "night club" or "nightclub" as a descriptive term.

Failing any discussion to the contrary, I will move the article later today as a noncontroversial move. If there are any objections, please discuss them here, or if you prefer, as a message on my talk page.

Secondly, the description of the fire's details and progress do not exactly accord with references, of which there is only one cited, the NFPA report.

Third, there are some mild NPOV issues I will correct.

Fourth, the fire's progress, cause and the resulting fire code changes which are what makes this incident encyclopedically relevant will get a thorough treatment.

Lastly, there are no illustrations or pictures. I will produce a floor plan of the building, and accompany that with an accurate narrative.

Another question is: has Parchman, Mississippi always been synonymous with the Parchman Farm/Parchman Prison (like Angola, Louisiana is the Louisiana State Pen), or has it ever had a separate identity as a distinct community? Bot error, again

An article I recently created, Twin Mounds Site, is a Mississippian culture mound site located near the confluence of the Mississippi River and Ohio River in Kentucky, and has no other connections to Mississippi, yet when I check the "what links here" page for that article, the talk pages for hundreds of Mississippi(the state) related article show up. I believe a bot has added it to a list of new articles for this project. Could someone remove it from this list? This has happened several times before, could someone tweak the bot so that it stops doing this for article that happen to have Mississippi in them? Thanks.Heiro 22:36, 30 October 2010 (UTC)

US Collaboration reactivated & Portal:United States starting next

Casliber recently posted a suggestion on the talk page for WikiProject United States about getting the US Wikipedians Collaboration page going again in an effort to build up articles for GA through FA class. See Wikipedia:U.S. Wikipedians' notice board/USCOTM. After several days of work from him the page is up and ready for action. A few candidates have already been added for you to vote on or you can submit one using the directions provided. If you are looking for inspiration here is a link to the most commonly viewed articles currently under the scope of Wikiproject United States. There are tons of good articles in the various US related projects as well so feel free to submit any article relating to US topics (not just those under the scope of WPUS). This noticeboard is intended for ‘’’All’’’ editors working on US subjects, not just those under WPUS.

The next item I intend to start updating is Portal:United States if anyone is interested in helping. Again this is not specific to WPUS and any help would be greatly appreciated to maximize visibility of US topics. The foundation has already been established its just a matter of updating the content with some new images, biographies and articles. That One Bay Along the Mississippi-Alabama State Line: Name?

It isn't included on most maps (for whatever reason; perhaps because it runs north-south, along the Mississippi-Alabama state line, thus being essentially coterminous with the state line, and so wouldn't display well on political maps), but I have seen it on a large, 3D topographical map in Storm Hall, at San Diego State University. Highway 90 presumably crosses it (and no, I'm not talking about Mobile Bay, or St. Louis Bay, but rather a body of water that is significantly larger than St. Louis Bay, and which is located between them ie. west of Mobile Bay, and east of St. Louis Bay.

Surely, anyone who lives (or has lived) in southeast Mississippi, must know the name of this body of water...so, what is it? Thank you for your assistance. KevinOKeeffe (talk) 21:04, 14 June 2011 (UTC)

Unincorporated communities in Mississippi

I am preparing to conduct semi-automated assessments of the class/quality of c. 340 articles in Category:Unincorporated communities in Mississippi (many are currently unassessed stubs), and I want to ask which importance rating ('Low', 'Mid' or 'High') should be assigned to these unincorporated communities—assuming, of course, that it would be acceptable to apply the same rating to all of them. Suggestion for WikiProject United States to support WikiProject Mississippi

It was recently suggested that this project be included in the list of projects supported by WikiProject United States. After reviewing the project it appears that there haven't been any recent discussions on the talk page and very few updates to the main project page. Before any action is taken I want to ensure that the members of the project concur with this action. I will contact each of the active members of the project and ask them to comment as well. Good Question. First let me say that the project page with members stay basically as they are with the members able to dictate how things happen, scope of the project, etc. Its not going to be absorbed or dissolved in any way and the scope won't change unless the members want it too. The only change would be that the WikiProject banner would be replaced with the WPUS banner with WikiProject Arizona (and any other supported projects) embedded within it. You can take a look at Category talk:Visitor attractions in South Carolina to see an example. All the projects use a standard group of parameters (Needs infobox, image, attention, etc) it also reduces the number of banners cluttering up the talk page of the articles. All the projects use the same article classes (If the project doesn't want to though thats ok too but the rest do and I would like to try and keep it as standard as possible).
How it will be supported can depend on what the members of the project want but typically WPUS is a bigger project with a lot more members, it has a newsletter, a monthly collaboration, multiple bots that run actively through the articles for various things (as can be seen on the members page) with more being setup as we go along. This means that it will be seen by a lot of people in a lot of ways. Up till now we have mostly been concentrating on building up the project but soon we are going to be starting to do some drives to build up articles, create new ones, recruit for the supported projects, etc. I hope this helps. --Kumioko (talk) 03:54, 17 August 2011 (UTC)

Archiving

I consolidated this talk page's five archives into one page: Wikipedia talk:WikiProject Mississippi/Archive 1 as the initial split by years (diff) had been implemented only partially. Archived sections had been moved manually into '/Archive 2' through '/Archive 5', but MiszaBot was not disabled and continued moving sections into '/Archive 1'.

I question whether annual archives are at all useful for this WikiProject, since there is relatively little activity on this talk page (perhaps the archive size should be reduced from 100K to, say, 50K?); however, if they are desired, the best way to implement them would be by setting up date-based archiving using User:MiszaBot/config. -- Black Falcon (talk) 21:01, 12 February 2012 (UTC)

Columbus Commercial Dispatch

A template on its talk page tells me that The Commercial Dispatch (newspaper) is of "low importance" to Mississippi. But its website suggests that it's a solid little newspaper. A pity, then, that the article on it is completely unsourced. Google News doesn't show any news about it. By contrast, Google Books has a dizzying number of hits, but those I was able to read were mere mentions of news stories, and not about the paper itself. I (in Tokyo) have no relation whatever to Mississippi, but perhaps some among those of you who do will have a book about Columbus, or about news media in Mississippi, that will say something. -- Hoary (talk) 00:14, 15 March 2012 (UTC)

Discussion to remove the Automatically assessed logic from the WikiProject United States template

Greetings, there is a discussion regarding removal of the logic used to populate Automatically assessed article categories from Template:WikiProject United States. Most of the categories (over 220 Wikipedia wide) were deleted in February 2013 because they were empty. These categories were previously populated by a bot that hasn't run since 2011 and the categories aren't used. Removal of this uneeded/unused logic will greatly reduce the size and complexity of the WikiProject United States template. Any comments or questions are encouraged here. Lest there is any confusion for people who don't speak the same language, the words "logic used to populate Automatically assessed article categories" refer to the feature that was supposed to allow this WikiProject's template to "inherit" class and importance ratings from other WikiProjects. Popular pages tool update

As of January, the popular pages tool has moved from the Toolserver to Wikimedia Tool Labs. The code has changed significantly from the Toolserver version, but users should notice few differences. Please take a moment to look over your project's list for any anomalies, such as pages that you expect to see that are missing or pages that seem to have more views than expected. Note that unlike other tools, this tool aggregates all views from redirects, which means it will typically have higher numbers. (For January 2014 specifically, 35 hours of data is missing from the WMF data, which was approximated from other dates. For most articles, this should yield a more accurate number. However, a few articles, like ones featured on the Main Page, may be off).

Web tools, to replace the ones at tools:~alexz/pop, will become available over the next few weeks at toollabs:popularpages. All of the historical data (back to July 2009 for some projects) has been copied over. The tool to view historical data is currently partially available (assessment data and a few projects may not be available at the moment). The tool to add new projects to the bot's list is also available now (editing the configuration of current projects coming soon). Unlike the previous tool, all changes will be effective immediately. OAuth is used to authenticate users, allowing only regular users to make changes to prevent abuse. A visible history of configuration additions and changes is coming soon. Once tools become fully available, their toolserver versions will redirect to Labs.

Dear Mississippians: This old abandoned Afc submission about a Mississippi historical figure has been confirmed as notable at Wikiproject Agriculture. I have two concerns before moving it to mainspace.

  • It has the feel of a professionally written biography, although I haven't been able to find the text on line anywhere.
  • As a BLP, it's short on inline citations.

Suggestion

Hello all! I was curious if anyone else thought it might be a good idea to make a (nonbinding) guideline on how all the individual US state WikiProjects should organize themselves, to help standardize them. I originally put this suggestion in the WikiProject United States talk page, so feel free to look there if you're interested. It's pretty empty though; basically all they said was to see what each of the individual projects thought about it. Please tell me if you have any concerns with this idea; hopefully we can find a way for everyone to love it! List of Governors of Mississippi

I've made an attempt to figure out the numbering at List of Governors of Mississippi. Many sources I've come across, describe Fielding Wright as the 49th Governor & yet Phil Bryant is numbered the 64th Governor (where he should be 63rd). The best I could figure out, is that Wright was numbered 'twice' 49th/50th. Would someone help me with this? GoodDay (talk) 01:15, 11 May 2016 (UTC)

Mystery in Mississippi

Does anyone know if Tillatoba, Mississippi actually exists? It is on wikipedia, but curiously has no official website, not on the official state list of incorporated places [3] or the official county website[4]. Both of which say there are only 3 incorporated places in the county: Coffeeville, Oakland, and Water Valley. No mention of Tillatoba. According to the US census, it is, in fact, a town, but I can't find any other source for this place. Can anyone shed light on this mystery? Mattximus (talk) 16:09, 12 August 2016 (UTC)

Good Article

Hello WikiProject Mississippi! I'm over from WikiProject North Carolina, but several months ago I wrote an article on Joseph S. Clark's and Robert F. Kennedy's tour of the Mississippi Delta. In brief, the two Senators went to the Mississippi Delta in 1967 to investigate reports of poverty and starvation, and they ended up discovering 3rd world conditions that persisted among thousands of laid-off sharecroppers and their families. The ensuing media frenzy led to a public awareness campaign and action by the government that resulted in such conditions being mostly resolved in the US by the 1970s. I nominated this for GA status back in October and no one has yet to review it. I don't mean to solicit, but I really would appreciate it if one of you took the time to look through it, or at the very least, rate its MS importance. WikiProject collaboration notice from the Portals WikiProject

The reason I am contacting you is because there are one or more portals that fall under this subject, and the Portals WikiProject is currently undertaking a major drive to automate portals that may affect them.

Portals are being redesigned.

The new design features are being applied to existing portals.

At present, we are gearing up for a maintenance pass of portals in which the introduction section will be upgraded to no longer need a subpage. In place of static copied and pasted excerpts will be self-updating excerpts displayed through selective transclusion, using the template {{Transclude lead excerpt}}.

The discussion about this can be found here.

Maintainers of specific portals are encouraged to sign up as project members here, noting the portals they maintain, so that those portals are skipped by the maintenance pass. Currently, we are interested in upgrading neglected and abandoned portals. There will be opportunity for maintained portals to opt-in later, or the portal maintainers can handle upgrading (the portals they maintain) personally at any time.

Background

On April 8th, 2018, an RfC ("Request for comment") proposal was made to eliminate all portals and the portal namespace. On April 17th, the Portals WikiProject was rebooted to handle the revitalization of the portal system. On May 12th, the RfC was closed with the result to keep portals, by a margin of about 2 to 1 in favor of keeping portals.

There's an article in the current edition of the Signpost interviewing project members about the RfC and the Portals WikiProject.

Request for information on WP1.0 web tool

Hello and greetings from the maintainers of the WP 1.0 Bot! As you may or may not know, we are currently involved in an overhaul of the bot, in order to make it more modern and maintainable. As part of this process, we will be rewriting the web tool that is part of the project. You might have noticed this tool if you click through the links on the project assessment summary tables.

We'd like to collect information on how the current tool is used by....you! How do you yourself and the other maintainers of your project use the web tool? Which of its features do you need? How frequently do you use these features? And what features is the tool missing that would be useful to you? Would someone from this WikiProject mind taking a look at this article? It's not clear whether this band is notable per WP:BAND, WP:ORG, or even WP:GNG and it appears to have been recently expanded by some editors who might be have a WP:COI to the band. I've tried to do a bit of clean up, but it probably needs much more work and it definitely needs more sources. -- Marchjuly (talk) 07:43, 26 November 2018 (UTC)
