How about a list on towns in NJ? Many (or most) other states have this, it's easy(ish) to make, and is an easy Featured List. See List of towns in New York. I'd be willing to make or edit it. Project New Jersey: Articles of unclear notability

Hello,

there are currently 10 articles in the scope of this project which are tagged with notability concerns. I have listed them here. (Note: this listing is based on a database snapshot of 12 March 2008 and may be slightly outdated.)

I would encourage members of this project to have a look at these articles, and see whether independent sources can be added, whether the articles can be merged into an article of larger scope, or possibly be deleted. I am interested in joining a WikiProject Central Jersey as a subordinate project to the NJ project. The Central Jersey article has been an impediment to my actually stepping up and forming a subproject as it needs serious attention from WP NJ editors before a project can be contemplated. I've spent considerable time working on WP Erie, a subproject of WP PA, and found it a nice way to focus on northwestern PA. IMO WP NJ would surely benefit from such a narrowing of scope into logical geographic regions as well. --Pat (talk) 03:07, 13 May 2008 (UTC)

Nj Gov shutdown

Changes to the WP:1.0 assessment scheme

As you may have heard, we at the Wikipedia 1.0 Editorial Team recently made some changes to the assessment scale, including the addition of a new level. The new description is available at WP:ASSESS.

  • The new C-Class represents articles that are beyond the basic Start-Class, but which need additional references or cleanup to meet the standards for B-Class.
  • The criteria for B-Class have been tightened up with the addition of a rubric, and are now more in line with the stricter standards already used at some projects.
  • A-Class article reviews will now need more than one person, as described here.

Each WikiProject should already have a new C-Class category at Category:C-Class_articles. If your project elects not to use the new level, you can simply delete your WikiProject's C-Class category and clarify any amendments on your project's assessment/discussion pages. The bot is already finding and listing C-Class articles.

Updates

Following the promotion of 2006 New Jersey State Government shutdown to GA status, I wanted to update the Project page to reflect the addition. I found that the lists of featured and good articles were very out of date. I was bold and updated them according to the assessment categories.

NRHP or Community?

I have noticed that there are several community articles in Category:Registered Historic Places in New Jersey. Most of these are for a historic district within the community. However the community as a whole does not belong to the historic district. I would suggest that the community articles remain about the community and the historic districts and NRHP locations be separate articles.

Local government article

As an Ohioan, I've found New Jersey's local government rather confusing, despite the various articles on the different kinds of government. Here in Ohio, we only have four types of government (city, village, township, and the rare urban township), and I've never seen anything on Ohio's specific "forms". Therefore, I'd find it quite helpful to have an article on Local government of New Jersey or a similar topic, as I think having summaries of each type and form of municipality in a single article would be helpful. What about this idea? I've composed this page strictly from {{NJmunigov}}, and I'm well aware that I'm only ending up with eight forms (or thirteen), but I think that an article on this format could be quite successful. Move of participants list/page reorg

I moved the participants list to a sub page and transcluded it into a collapsable box to save some space. I would like to do something similar to add the auto generated lists of articles needing cleanup that was mentioned above. I just find the whole project page to be getting cumbersome. Any thoughts on improving this so that it is easier to find things, and which things should be prioritized? Many of the sections are really out of date, so if there are more automated tools we could use, those would probably help a lot. Jim Miller (talk) 14:52, 1 August 2008 (UTC)

I must be bored, because I have gone ahead and designed a new WikiProject page. I borrowed pretty heavily from some other projects to come up with something more attractive for us to use. Anyone interested can take a look at User:JimMillerJr/Sandbox/WPNJ redesign and make comments, suggestions, etc. It would include adding pages for some things we need anyway like Assesment work space for the new A-Class requirements, a Peer Review page, and the automated cleanup listing available through User:B. State government articles

Note: This project is not specifically a government project.

  • New Jersey Senate has been completed, and pages exists for all 40 Senators. Alansohn 20:18, 1 November 2005 (UTC).
  • New Jersey General Assembly page has been completed with pages for all 80 Assembly members. Alansohn 20:18, 1 November 2005 (UTC)
  • Governors of New Jersey page has many missing entries. We should create a generic stub with years of service and party for each governor (starting with post-independence and then working backwards), and then make an effort to expand pages.
  • I (AlanSohn) have already created a number of articles regarding New Jersey forms of government (see Faulkner Act (New Jersey) for a starting point. There were a few missing articles for the City (New Jersey) and Town (New Jersey) traditional forms of government which have been complete, and other pages were updated with revised information.   • I (AlanSohn) also updated the New Jersey Legislature page to include the municipalities in each of the 40 New Jersey legislative districts.
  • Board of Chosen Freeholders was created listing how this unique institution works in all of New Jersey's 21 counties. Alansohn 20:18, 1 November 2005 (UTC)
  • I (AlanSohn) created a model template on the Teaneck, New Jersey page that could be used to show the state / federal legislators in each municipality.
  • It would be good to create and coordinate state government articles: Branches, departments, legislators, etc.
  • New Jersey Supreme Court article needs to be expanded and pages for current judges created. Historical information on Judges could also be included on this page.
    • I have created a couple of the judges' articles and plan on doing the rest at my earliest convenience. However, it seems as if the article on Supreme Justice Deborah T. Poritz was copied straight off of njcourts online. I'm pretty sure that this is not allowed (but as a relatively new user I'm not too sure exactly what is and isn't a copyvio), and I have no idea of what to do with (but I wikified it). Reboot updates

WikiPproject NJ has seen quite a few changes over the last week or so. Besides the facelift, there have been some improvements in automation to let members find articles and assist in co-ordination.

  • The banner has been moved to {{WikiProject New Jersey}} and now uses the {{WPBannerMeta}} which allows the extended assessment scale to be used. The redirects from {{Project New Jersey}} and {{WPNJ}} will still work. It also allows us to place bulletins at the bottom of every Project Banner for announcement purposes (as some people may have noticed when I accidentally placed the user page notice on them all!). It can also support task forces if we need them in the future.
  • The Cleanup department is now automated. Each time a new download of the database becomes available the bot will generate a list of all project articles with cleanup tags. It also lists their importance ratings. The current list is from a database snapshot of 2008-07-14.
  • This page now uses two different bots for archiving. User:Miszabot will move discussions with no comments for 30 days into the archives. User:HBC Archive Indexerbot generates an index page that makes it much easier to find old discussions.
  • The navigation bar hasn't been added to all the project pages yet, but should make it easier to move around all the pages we have. Feel free to add the template to a project page if you think it would be helpful.
  • There is a page for a newsletter. Much like the bot-delivered reboot notice, newsletters can be dropped on user talk pages. Of cource somebody would have to write them. Volunteers? There is a seperate page for newsletter delivery signups, so if you don't want the user page spam, just remove your name.
  • Some of our work categories have been updated to a new format that has links to all the other categories. We have also added some new categories to support the extended assessment scale. This allowed us to identify several featured lists that we didn't have in our Best of... section through the new Category:FL-Class New Jersey articles.

Hopefully improvements are still coming. There is a bot in development that will automatically notify us of important article status changes - AfD, FAC, Peer Review requests, Featured and Good article reassessments. We can start using this once it is ready to give us a heads up when these articles needing quick attention are identified.

There have been setbacks, too. The bot that used to add our project banner to pages in Category: New Jersey stubs has not run since October 2007, and is not currently active. There are a lot of new articles tagged with {{NewJersey-stub}} out there that haven't been added to the project yet.

The Article assessment project changed the assessment scale by adding C-Class articles, and tightening the requirements for B-Class. It is optional if we want to use them, but we need to set some Project standards for how to use them. A-Class now requires two uninvolved editors to agree before promotion. We need to come up with a process for doing that as well.

Jim thanks for all of your work in bringing WPNJ up to date. The assessments that have been going on seem to be showing that one of the features missing from many articles is pictures. With people taking time off over the summer, it may be time for a "Wikipedia Takes New Jersey" event (a la a similar event in Manhattan), in which we can try to get images taken and uploaded for places, schools and attractions across the state. Take a picture of town hall, the high school, the "Welcome" sign, major buildings, historic sites, beaches, etc. that can be added to articles and help make them more interesting for readers. Alan, great idea. We could run it through Labor Day and maybe co-ordinate with the NYC project to look for people visiting NJ for their vacation or weekends. I could add a notice to the bottom of the banner asking for pictures, too. We now have a category for images if people tag them correctly, or use the category over at commons. Historic population levels, pre-1930

All, we had previously worked to populate municipal population levels back to the 1930 census. I've been compiling more data, and have nearly complete records back to 1880. Due to time constraints, I'm not making progress as quickly as I would like, and so I'm looking for volunteers to assist. I've been extracting the data by looking at Census PDF scans of the original documents. I've been populating a spreadsheet in Google Docs here: [3]. I'm looking for assistance in two respects:

  1. Examining PDF scans of census documents, extracting data, and populating the above spreadsheet. Google Docs allows collaboration with other Google account holders (free registration).   2. Going through the extracted data and adding it to the municipal articles with appropriate references. Anyone can do this, but lets coordinate to avoid duplication of effort.

Assessing Towns and Cities

Quick question. Assessing towns and cities in NJ. How is their importance determined? --ZeWrestler Talk 02:46, 7 August 2008 (UTC) ?

I have been assessing quite a few lately, and there are some conversations on my talk page about them. There's another started over on the assessments talk page. I have been going with the guideline that CDP and neighborhood articles are of Low importance, and municipalities are of at least Mid importance. There really should be some kind of population cutoff for that, but I don't know how high we should make it. Of course the largest cities should probably be Top priority, but I don't have an opinion about the range we should use to determine the difference between Mid - High - Top. Census-designated place - generally an identified neighborhood in a town, like Cedarville, New Jersey. We have quite a few of them. Jim Miller See me | Touch me | Review me 15:40, 10 August 2008 (UTC)
A cutoff of about 40,000 population would include the 50 largest municipalities in a top category (about 10% of municipalities), or a 50K cutoff gets the top 30 (a little over 5% of the total). I would also add other, smaller municipalities listed on the NJ template (for example, Asbury Park and Hoboken, if I recall) that have some measure of notability. A 20K or 25K cutoff would leave 50 - 100 mid levels. The rest, including CDPs and ZCTAs, are all probably low. There are other arbitrary calls, but using population is not a bad guide. I think current scheme is that places with a strong historic or cultural significance get importance=high. Examples include Newark, Camden, Trenton, Atlantic City, and Jersey City. All others are importance=mid. Importance=top is reserved for articles with wider significance, I'm not sure any NJ location qualifies. Importance=low is reserved for really ancillary topics that don't have any real bearing on the project. The vast majority of articles should be in importance=mid, and, IMO, all communities should be at least importance=mid. --ChrisRuvolo (t) 16:01, 11 August 2008 (UTC)
According to the NJ Wikipedia article, NJ has 566 municipalities. How about we set a goal of having all 566 articles relating to those municipalities assessed by 30 September. What do you guys think? --ZeWrestler Talk 01:14, 12 August 2008 (UTC)

I agree. We need to be clear on the class assessments, too. B-class is already pretty well defined, so the question is about stub, start, and C-class. So many of our town articles have been filled with "boilerplate" material that Start-class is pretty much a given on the municipalities. Alonsohn does yeoman's work in adding additional details and sources to these articles. My question is, just how much is needed to differentiate between Start and C? And do we have a list of exactly what was done in the bot updates so we can tell the difference? I have already done all of the towns starting with A and B, and some Cs, but they may need to be revisited once we clarify the requirements. According to the specs, start-class is largely incomplete. C-class has major topical coverage but is still not topically complete. Also C-class should be decently referenced while start-class may be unreferenced. Note that this is a guide, and all these ratings are somewhat subjective, but that guide has been setup to apply to all articles for all topics, so I'm not sure it is very much up for debate. I think some good examples are Bogota (C-class) and Atlantic Highlands (Start-class). Both of these were rated by you, Jim, and I agree that they are the correct ratings. Bogota is well referenced and has pretty broad topical coverage, but lacks a History section. Atlantic Highlands has basic topical coverage but has large sections that are devoid of references. --ChrisRuvolo (t) 17:49, 12 August 2008 (UTC)
So would an article like Plainsboro be a B class because it has a bit more detail than Bogota, or would it be a C class still because the topics within that section need to be shelled out a bit more? --ZeWrestler Talk 11:19, 13 August 2008 (UTC)
I don't think Plainsboro is B-class, it has whole sections that are unreferenced, and has no photos. I would say that Plainsboro is either C-class or start-class, and where it lies exactly is up to debate, but I am going to rate it as start-class. --ChrisRuvolo (t) 13:08, 13 August 2008 (UTC)

Image needs replacement - Hereford Inlet Light

Hello all...

An image used in the article, specifically Image:HEREFORE INLET LIGHTHOUSE.jpg, has a little bit of a licensing issue. The image was uploaded back when the rules around image uploading were less restrictive. It is presumed that the uploader was willing to license the picture under the GFDL license but was not clear in that regard. As such, the image, while not at risk of deletion, is likely not clearly licensed to allow for free use in any future use of this article. If anyone has an image that can replace this, or can go take one and upload it, it would be best.

New Jersey articles needing geographic coordinates

20 articles in Category:New Jersey articles missing geocoordinate data do not have geographic coordinates. Coords are useful for making the article appear on Google Maps & many other mapping services; and they allow our users to click through to see the article subject location on a map. Cymeky, Please take a look at the guide to task forces. It seems that WikiProject Education in New Jersey is actually a textbook example of what task forces should be. This WikiProject currently serves no purpose at all other than to attempt to get some editors to focus more on this topic. This project has existed for a year and has not expanded beyond the basic setup found in the WikiProject guide. Please let me know your position after reading these two guides. If you still maintain your position, we can put it before the WikiProject Council for an independent assessment. I hope you realize that I'm only pushing this in order to HELP this important topic, not to make it go away. Proposed Coordinator Dept for WPNJ

To coordinate the "inner workings" of our WikiProject, I propose the implementation of a coordinator department to be responsible for the maintenance tasks of the WikiProject. Therefore, the proposal is as follows:

  • Establishment of a coordinator department with 1 Lead Coordinator and a multiple Coordinators to each serve terms of 12 months.
  • Any member of the project can volunteer to be a coordinator. The coordinator page (to be created) will have a section where members can submit their name for consideration, and other members can indicate whether they support or oppose. After a set period of time (2 weeks?), a coordinator will indicate whether the user has been accepted.
  • At the end of the term, coordinators can resubmit their name for another term.
  • There is no limit to the number of coordinators.

Wow, I would have thought from the titles that the latter 2 could be combined, and the first left as a stand-alone. It doesn't look that way. The first two seem to duplicate the NHLD, and the last seems to be strictly about the military installation.
My thought would be that the Historic District should be one article, and another article covering the military installations would still be viable. I would think that Sandy Hook Proving Ground should end up as a redirect to Fort Hancock, New Jersey based on this quote: "A dual military command existed with The Sandy Hook Proving Ground - contained within the site of Fort Hancock...", but I would like to see a discussion involving WP:NRHP as well as WP:MILHIST for more opinions. Regarding municipality articles

Most articles on New Jersey municipalities currently have a sub-section called "Federal, state, and county representation," which are typically stocked with templates like Template:NJ Congress 09 or Template:NJ Governor for easy construction. A good example of the typical standard format can be found here. However, some Hudson County articles, like Bayonne, New Jersey, differ. I think all these subsections could be made uniform with the rest of the NJ municipality articles'. User:Nightscream disagrees and says the standard format isn't the right format.

Here's my rationale for using the current standard for all NJ municipality articles:

  • I disagree with the idea that Thomas A. DeGise, Jon Corzine, Albio Sires, etc. have "nothing to do with Bayonne," and thus don't merit mention in the Bayonne article, as User:Nightscream contends. These individuals govern Bayonne, whether through the Hudson County government, the state government, or through Congress. If you're going to mention what congressional and legislative districts Bayonne lies in (which Nightscream is okay with), why not also say who represents that district? Anthony Chiappone, for example, is just one of three people representing Bayonne in Trenton -- but according to Nightscream, he's the only one who merits mention, simply because he's from Bayonne. To me, that doesn't make much sense.
  • Links to articles about individuals who represent a municipality like Bayonne in the federal, state, or county government can only be helpful to readers; they certainly aren't harming the article by being there.

Anyway, since my discussion with Nightscream involves hundreds of articles (not just Bayonne's) I decided to bring the discussion here. Anyone's opinion would be appreciated. A Stop at Willoughby (talk) 14:35, 31 August 2009 (UTC)

Having created these templates, I feel strongly that they serve the purpose of telling readers interested about a municipality who represents that place at the county, state and federal level. Making the changes to the templates is a breeze and all related articles are updated. There is a quirk that relates to freeholders. 20 of New Jersey's counties have freeholders representing the whole county on an at-large basis. Hudson County has freeholder districts, where each freeholder represents a portion of the county. See Hudson County, New Jersey#Government and administration for the details of how each municipality in Hudson County may be represented by just one of the nine freeholders or as many as six (for Jersey City, New Jersey). Bayonne, New Jersey, in District 1, is represented solely by Doreen McAndrew DiDomenico, so it would make sense to list that one member. But to say that "the 31st district of the New Jersey legislature is represented in the assembly by Bayonne's Anthony Chiappone" leaves the potential misperception that he is the only representative, not one of three. I do support some differences for Hudson County, but I agree that the full set of federal, state and county representatives for the municipality should be listed in all 566 municipalities, with the only difference being how freeholders are handled in Hudson County. I have to agree that the templates are appropriate for inclusion. Under User:Nightscream's interpretation, the town of Harrison would not show any representation above the municipal level, as none of the elected officials are actually residents of Harrison. Also, Sandra Bolden Cunningham and L. Harvey Smith are elected representatives of Bayonne in the State Legislature, and rightfully should be mentioned in the article. To leave out such germaine information would be inappropriate. Finally, as a matter of style, the WikiProject has adopted the templates and their usage. I understand the argument that a state-level politician may be too much to include in an article on a municipality, but I actually - on balance - think that it's better to include too much than rather than too little. I see you are well-meaning, but I don't think repetitions of "The Governor of New Jersey is Jon Corzine (D, Hoboken).[1]" in main text of every New Jersey municipality article adds to those articles. It seems similar to wp:link-spam, which is repetition of an external link in many articles, and which is deemed unhelpful. Likewise I don't think mention of any other higher level representative is appropriate, unless there is a specific connection to the municipality, like "Our Town's state representative Porky Smith brought home the bacon again with funding for a bridge to nowhere in Our Town". doncram (talk) 17:07, 31 August 2009 (UTC)
Doncram, I see your point about the repetition. I don't believe that non-editing readers would see it that way. Those of us who edit, and especially related articles within a project's scope like these, would notice the repetitiveness of the inclusion. The average reader is probably not reading every article on towns in NJ. I would suspect (although I have no data to back this up) that the average reader looks at only one or just a few articles about a town for a specific reason. If they are thinking of moving there, have read about it in a news item, are looking for history, or any other specific reason for seeking out the particular article then they will see the one town's article and only see the information once. In those cases, I believe that showing the representatives contributes to the fuller picture of the subject and the links will provide a convenient means of finding further information. Legislative districts bind multiple towns together in ways that we should not separate. In the example used, Bayonne is inextricably tied to the southern portions of Jersey City. A reader who is not familiar with the makeup of NJ Legislative districts would be left with the distinct impression that Bayonne has only one representative in state government instead of three. I'm a person who believes in continuity for the sake of easy usage by novices of the site. I believe that a rule should apply to all things that are alike, except when a really special circumstance (eg. Hudson's Freeload...I mean, Freeholder...districts) arises. That being said, I went through about 20 different states' cities, towns, and villages, of all sizes, and found not a single one tells who represents them in Congress or who the governor of the state is. The fact is, it's fluff for the sake of fluff, and it's wasting space. If someone wants to know who the governor of New Jersey is, they can, in the search box, type Governor of New Jersey and get the full article, having a large mug of Corzine on the right. There's nothing wrong with putting which congressional district(s) cover the city in question, but link it to the appropriate article instead of a template. Simplicity, folks. Make it simple for the people who don't use this site as much as us. Being different than everyone else just ends up confusing people and making the situation more convoluted than it needs to be. Comment It's great to see WPNJ reinvigorated on an issue that might make some progress, as it's been quiet for a while. The issue of at-large/districts exists in Atlantic County, and that template has been updated, listing both the at-large members and the district representatives accompanied by the municipalities in their district. In rethinking this through, Essex County, New Jersey has the same mix of at-large and wards and also needs to be addressed. So far, that's 3 out of 21 counties, with the vast majority of municipalities in the 18 counties whose freeholders are all elected at-large. Alansohn (talk) 21:06, 31 August 2009 (UTC)

Overnight, I have realized another concern with this situation, and I find it specifically troubling with the Bayonne article. Do we leave ourselves open for the appearance of bias by not listing the complete legislative delegation? In this case, the change has eliminated any mention of the two-thirds of the delegation who are African-American, yet retains mention of the lone caucasian. I think that all articles should use the standard format. the templates make editing easier and If you want to know who represents you, you can find it in one place. Otherwise you would need to look at the district and then go to another place to see who represents that district. Information that does not pertain to an article's subject does not belong in that article. It's one thing to mention that Bayonne is in the tenth and thirteenth Congressional districts and 31st legislative district, and that a resident is one of its representatives in that district. It's completely another to digress to an explanation of those districts, because the article isn't about them. It's about Bayonne (or whatever other city). Any information that does not pertain to the city in question has no business in the article.
"It's standard" just seems like a euphemism for "that's the way it is", when we should be discussing whether it's "the way it should be". Whether it's "standard" doesn't mean that it's right, and use of such templates is a question of consensus, and is not a "rule", as FanInTampa calls it.
The only information that should be mentioned is what districts Bayonne is in, and any natives who represent it. The rest belongs only in articles that are about those districts, which readers can read by clicking on those districts' links. That's more than enough. Anything more than that, including entire paragraphs about those districts, is inappropriate for an article that isn't about those districts. Mention the districts, and let readers go to those articles, IMO. A template that creates an entire subsection that isn't about the city in question is not appropriate. I will disagree about the relevance issue, because Sandra Cunningham IS the State Senator representing Bayonne, regardless of where she lives. Her holding an office that is directly related to Bayonne is relevant to the town article. I would agree on the use of linking articles to the districts themselves, but we don't have articles on each of the Legislative Districts in NJ. I also don't think they would be necessary. Most of the information they would contain (population, geography, history) would be duplicated by the town articles anyway. If, in the next election, no resident of Bayonne is elected to the State Legislature, do we ignore the entire concept of those residents, and that town, having any representation? I also believe that the need to edit 566 different articles with massive amounts of duplication every 2 years is asking too much of our editors. We shouldn't be making articles that require that kind of maintainance, when that is the very reason we have templates. Today, I updated the template for the Hudson Freeholders (which was out of date by 3 years) and got multiple updates done at once. Too bad all 12 articles don't use the template. If Bayonne is only one of several cities in that district, then she doesn't merely "represent Bayonne", but represents that district. That's is the more relevant scope of her job. This is why it is reasonable to mention that district only as it relates to the city in question, and not have an entire subsection on that district. Again, the city articles in question are about those cities. Not those districts. No one is disputing that mention of them is relevant; the question is, how much of a mention does it merit? If an article is about Bayonne, or Union City, or whatever, it can mention that city is part of that district, and for info, the reader can click on the link for that district's article. Doesn't that make more organizational sense? Look at the government section for Union City, New Jersey. The last three passages mention the organizations or districts of which Union City is a part, but the emphasis on how those passages are written is how those districts relate to the subject of the article. It does not digress into a greater explanation of its legislative districts, the county's Board of Chosen Freeholders, or North Hudson Fire and Rescue.

If there's not an article on those districts, then why not write one? Right now, there is this section in the County's Board of Chosen Freeholders article, which correctly gives all the people who represent it. That's what should be linked to. Just because it doesn't have its own article doesn't mean that you should create what is essentially a satellite article inside another one. If you're against duplication, well then, doesn't that section duplicate that info? As for 566 articles, this way of framing the situation assumes that one person has to do this. I think a more accurate way of framing it is to observe that each of those individual city articles tends to be updated by the editors who focus on it. Unfortunately it doesn't look like we're coming to a consensus. Nightscream, your arguments aren't really making much sense to me. I understand that you might be against mentioning which parts of which counties comprise a congressional district in an article about a city in that district. However, your extreme position of excluding everything that doesn't have a close connection to the subject kind of undercuts your position. Let's be honest – it really makes no sense to mention Chiappone but not Cunningham or Smith in the Bayonne article, and so forth and so on. I think Alansohn, Jim Miller, and others have made very positive suggestions that can be implemented fairly easily thanks to the templates. There's nothing "extreme", "unrealistic" or difficult to make sense of in the position that information in an article should pertain to that article's subject, and that tangential digressions into other things should not be in it. What the heck does the fact that Essex County and Union County are part of the 10th District, have to do with an article on a city not in those counties? What other counties are in that district has nothing to do with the Bayonne, period. It's an unwarranted digression that creates two entire paragraphs that have nothing to do with the article's topic. As a compromise, I think those passages should be streamlined to include only the info on those districts relevant to each city. Instead of this:

This passage makes more sense, as it keeps the focus on Bayonne. Who the governor of New Jersey is has nothing to do with Bayonne. You'll also notice that I kept the numerical rendering of "10th" and "31st" consistent, instead of using words for one and numerals for the other. I already addressed that point. I'm not going to go around changing countless city articles. I'm going to restrict myself to those that are on my Watchlist, or which I tend to come across at through random browsing (which tend to be mostly those of Hudson County), and even then, any change I make to it will depend on info that I happen to come across. This is pretty much what I've been doing. If I do not become aware of a change in an office, and someone else does, then they can change it, and those who concentrate on other cities can do the same for those. I think it's somewhat fair to say that we don't need to mention that districts are composed of certain counties in these sections. Also, I'm glad we agree that at least all three state legislators and both congressmen should get their names included in the article. But I still support including a mention of both of New Jersey's U.S. Senators and a mention of who represents Bayonne in Hudson County government. I'm less insistent on the Governor issue, but I still disagree with your assertion that Corzine has nothing to do with Bayonne. He's the Governor of New Jersey, right? Bayonne is a city in New Jersey, right? So Corzine has something to do with Bayonne.
I also agree with Carpetmaster101's sentiments regarding making all these changes. The templates exist for a reason; they make it easy to make these changes to countless articles quickly. Making specific changes to all the articles about the 566 municipalities in New Jersey is a laborious task. Nightscream's willingness to make these changes to the articles on municipalities in Hudson County is a nice gesture but it doesn't do much, considering the fact that only 12 of NJ's 566 municipalities are in that county. Anyway, even if we were to make all these changes, it would be much more difficult to monitor these sections for vandalism or make simple changes to these sections, simply because of the lack of templates. My point here, I suppose, is that while Nightscream's proposal is arguably in the interest of conciseness, it would have negative repercussions for other editors.

I just can't understand why you don't see the obvious flaw in this argument. Because Corzine is the governor of New Jersey, therefore the article for every single city in the state should mention him? I'm sorry, but that's just specious reasoning. The Bayonne article is not about New Jersey. It's about Bayonne. In order to make this bit of reasoning stick, you're employing a tenuous chain of indirect connections, and this is why it doesn't work. You're essentially saying that if something is noteworthy or important about New Jersey that therefore, ipso facto, it should be mentioned in each and every article of its cities, which is preposterous. If you're going to argue this, why stop at the governor and state senators? What other things about NJ could you mention that are not specific to Bayonne, but which you could rationalize mentioning in Bayonne, likes NJ's gross state product, NJ state crime statistics, the state's entire history, etc.? And why stop there? New Jersey is in the United States. The President of the United is Barack Obama. So why not mention that the President of the U.S. is Obama? And what about all the other interesting things about the planet United Nations or the planet Earth, since the U.S. is a part of those things? It sounds silly, but is perfectly consistent with your reasoning.
I'm sorry, but all of that stuff belongs in the article on New Jersey, not in an article about one of its cities, to which that info is not specific. When a reader wants to know who NJ's governor or senators are, by what reasoning do you suppose that they'd go to an article on Bayonne? The relevance you're insisting on is indirect, and that's what we have wikilinks for. One shouldn't have to be play "Six Degrees of Separation" in order to establish relevance to an article's topic.

Come on, Nightscream...that's not really consistent with my reasoning. I am not arguing that everything that is notable about New Jersey ought to be in every article about a New Jersey municipality. I am simply arguing that in an subsection about Bayonne's representation in federal, state, and county government, it makes plenty of sense to mention Corzine's name. Furthermore, your Obama remark is not an accurate extension of my argument. I would argue that my reasoning is not as specious as you think, unless you twist it into something it's not the way you have. And even if we were to remove the reference to Gov. Corzine, I find it hard to believe you would want to remove the Senators' template. How can you argue that Sens. Lautenberg and Menendez are any less part of Bayonne's "federal representation" than Reps. Payne or Sires?
My other concern is that your proposal eliminates all references to county government. Do you object to mentioning DeGise (the county executive), as you object to mentioning Corzine? Personally I favor mentioning DeGise. Apart from DeGise, I'm determined that we should at least be mentioning which freeholder represents Bayonne (DiDomenico), thus fulfilling the "county representation" part of the subsection's title.

It is a perfectly consistent extension of your reasoning. You're reasoning that things that are only germaine to articles on a given NJ city by way a chain of indirect connections or expanding parental categorizations should be included. You're wrong, and pointing out the flaw in this reasoning by merely extending that line of thinking, in order to show that where that chain ends is arbitrary, is a perfectly valid way to illustrate this. If you can refute this point, then do so. Why shouldn't an article on NJ mention who the President of the US is? Why should an article on the US not mention who the leaders of the UN are? The logic is the same.

One more time for the cheap seats: An article on Bayonne is not about New Jersey. Or its Senate. Or Corzine. Or its county. It's about Bayonne. If it doesn't pertain to Bayonne, then it does not belong. Information on things parentally related to Bayonne belongs in articles on those things. Not to be snide about it, but Senators haven't represented states since the passage of the Seventeenth Amendment nearly a century ago. They represent every individual within the state. There is a valid point being made here by myself and others that who represents a town on the county, state, and national levels defines that town as much as who sits on the local council or its geography. It is important to that city, its residents, visitors, and researchers. And of those groups, I would believe that people who already live in a town are the least likely to look up its article here. I would also note that the default infobox for towns - Template:infobox settlement - is designed for including links for national and regional representatives (see Halifax Regional Municipality for the recommended example of representatives being included in the infobox as collapsable lists). Of course, Halifax has an entirely seperate article for its government that lists all of its federal legislative districts, and those all have their own articles as well. I would be supportive of the idea of breaking out seperate articles for the government of each NJ municipality in that same model, and listing the state and federal representatives in collapsible lists within the infobox. Either way, as an editor and as a user of WikiPedia for my own personal and work-related research, I find that no governmental unit can be understood without acknowledging and understanding the officials its residents have chosen to represent them. I continue to disagree that these links, names, and districts don't belong in municipal articles, but understand where someone may see there inclusion as prose as cluttering up the article.

I don't know if an article on the government of every municipality in the state is a good or practical idea, but I do continue to support mentioning Senators, Congressmen, state legislators, and county freeholders where appropriate. Nightscream, to respond to your last point, Senators represent the people of the entire state, but they are just as much federal representatives (small "r") of Bayonne or any other New Jersey municipality as the relevant Congressmen. I've addressed this point many times already; it doesn't matter whether the federal representative represents the whole state or just a congressional district, they still represent the municipality in Congress, and that justifies inclusion.
Did you ever request a WP:3O? For the reasons Jim mentioned above, I doubt the participants there would consider this issue.

Well, this discussion has been ongoing since August 31 here, and briefly before that at Nightscream's talk page. I think it's time to survey those users involved to see if there is a consensus for the proposed compromise. Here it is:

My only concern is with the wording of federal and state representatives, which for most municipalities is handled using templates, which means that all 566 municipality articles can be updated after an election by updating the small handful of districts that changed representatives. WPNJ Education task force

I have been looking at the conversion of the NJ Education WikiProject to a task force, and was wondering if we should work on completing the transformation? I have worked on the necessary changes to the WPNJ banner template to incorporate the task force (it is currently at Template:WikiProject New Jersey/sandbox) by adding task force parameters. The changes would allow us to indicate that articles are covered by the task force, and support the seperate importance levels already used by the task force. Here is an example:

OK, it's been over a week and I have seen no objections. I have added the TF parameters to the WPNJ template and updated the documentation. I have also created a missing category that was needed at Category:Education in New Jersey articles. Now comes the issue of replacing the instances of Template:WikiProject Education in New Jersey with Template:WPNJ and carrying over the appropriate parameters.

My question to the group would be about parent project importance. Some articles already have WPNJ and Education project banners, so they would be easily preserved as they are. I can begin on those articles right away. What do we do about articles that are not already rated by the main project? Do we assign all of the Education articles a default importance of Mid or Low from the main project? Do we leave them as unassessed for WPNJ and go through them manually? If we want to have a bot do these replacements, we will need a full specification for how to do it. Even if we do this manually, we should still have some kind of plan. I have no objection. Coincidentally, this discussion comes as I have created the article for the last missing (non-vocational) school district in the state. I have downloaded the latest data from the 2009 Comparative Spending Guide from the New Jersey Department of Education as well as enrollment data for 2007-08 from the National Center for Education Statistics and I have updated about 120 district articles in the past two weeks or so. Take a look at Stockton Borough School District for an example of the infobox I have created. We can roll through the talk pages and also do some assessments. It's actually better than I thought. Out of 654 Education articles, only 56 do not currently have a WPNJ banner. I can easily create a worklist for those to be done manually. These pages are largely unwatched, and usually contain little more than notes from a page assessment. WPNJ has 104 articles that use this feature. Article tagging bot

As a result of creating the work list for the unreferenced BLPs above, I found that a lot of the articles in Category:People from New Jersey are not tagged as WPNJ articles. Our coverage is even worse in other areas. Category:New Jersey contains a total of 136,293 articles(although many are in multiple subcategories, and some subcategories are not on our list), but there are only 5,769 articles currently tagged as part of the project. That leaves a lot of articles we are not seeing in the cleanup listing or in our article alerts. Should we ask at Wikipedia:Bot requests for one of the Category:WikiProject tagging bots to start regularly adding our project tag to all of the articles in our category list? Additional bots for project information

While we already make pretty extensive use of bots to do background work for WPNJ (new pages, cleanup listing, article alerts, talkpage archiving, archive indexing), there are a few more that we could add to help editors find pages that need watching or improvement. There is a bot that will maintain our List of Recognized Content. While I think that the lists generated are a bit too long and inclusive for use on the project main page (the Best of section), a seperate page similar to Wikipedia:WikiProject Universities/Accomplishments which would list all of our articles that have been recognized through one of the various processes. I have set up a new page for this, which should be filled the next time the bot runs. We will have to see if formatting it into the main page and the portal page is worth it, or if this list will be enough to locate updated articles that have been missed in the Best of section.

One of the newer bot processes creates lists of a project's Popular Pages based upon page hit statistics.See Wikipedia:WikiProject Ohio/Popular pages for an example. I think a gallery section ("Pictures") could be created below the table. List of crossings of the Connecticut River has a pic up top, but there's more room for it in that article (the contents box helps -- for some reason there isn't one in the Hackensack crossings article). There seems to be room for a 150px or even 250px pic at the bottom, next to the "See also" and "External links" sections. A gallery would be better if we get more. I hope to return on my own wheels this summer for more. Wanted to do it a month ago but got lost in the warehouse district of west central Secaucus and had to pedal back to Jersey City before sundown. Too many interesting things to photograph; too few days in a lifetime which is why I don't do so much article writing anymore on the theory that there's more good writers around than eager photographers. Pageview stats

After a recent request, I added WikiProject New Jersey to the list of projects to compile monthly pageview stats for. The data is the same used by http://stats.grok.se/en/ but the program is different, and includes the aggregate views from all redirects to each page. The stats are at Wikipedia:WikiProject New Jersey/Popular pages.

The page will be updated monthly with new data. The edits aren't marked as bot edits, so they will show up in watchlists. Incoming proposal

Just as a heads up, there is a proposal by WP:WPUSA to usurp all state project banners with the WPUSA banner. This would effectively include all state projects into an umbrella under WPUSA. While we would see no structural changes to our project, it is something to consider as it would greatly expand the number of articles covered by WPUSA while reducing the number of talk page banners for articles which fall under the area of multiple state projects. US Collaboration reactivated & Portal:United States starting next

Casliber recently posted a suggestion on the talk page for WikiProject United States about getting the US Wikipedians Collaboration page going again in an effort to build up articles for GA through FA class. See Wikipedia:U.S. Wikipedians' notice board/USCOTM. After several days of work from him the page is up and ready for action. A few candidates have already been added for you to vote on or you can submit one using the directions provided. If you are looking for inspiration here is a link to the most commonly viewed articles currently under the scope of Wikiproject United States. There are tons of good articles in the various US related projects as well so feel free to submit any article relating to US topics (not just those under the scope of WPUS). This noticeboard is intended for ‘’’All’’’ editors working on US subjects, not just those under WPUS.

The next item I intend to start updating is Portal:United States if anyone is interested in helping. Again this is not specific to WPUS and any help would be greatly appreciated to maximize visibility of US topics. The foundation has already been established its just a matter of updating the content with some new images, biographies and articles. User:WolterBot has been out of service for almost a year now, and I haven't seen anyone put together a new way to get the page updated. There is a new version available (noted a few threads up), but it only provides the list on the toolserver. It can be seen here. Until someone puts together a new bot to format and copy that data to project space pages, it can't be watchlisted for updates. I will edit the header file there again to point to the new list. Good News - NJ Missing Coordinates

Over the past few weeks, I have been widdling down the list of missing coordinate data for NJ articles. Started at over ~700, down to 10! When we knock out the remaining few (tough ones) I think we'll be the first state with zero. Go Jersey!

Cleanup efforts

Along with TiMike's geocoord work noted above, I have been slowly working my way through the cleanup listing as well as the unreferenced BLP list. On the BLP portion, there are 2 left on the list right now. I have added sources to one and prodded the other. That list should hopefully be cleared very shortly. On the cleanup list, I have made some changes to a number of templates that were causing a lot of articles to show up as having outdated statements. Close to one-third of our articles were listed for cleanup a few weeks ago. When this week's list is generated, I hope to see a large reduction in that number. Having templates like this makes this project much more manageable, we need these templates. Without them, we would need bots to perform changes to the 566 municipal articles every 2 years when there is a new legislature. 2010 Census Data for New Jersey published

To follow up.. There is talk of a bot here (also see talk page): Wikipedia:2010 US Census. Following the instructions on the talk page I was able to retrieve the 2010 census total population data for NJ locations. I've been going through this table, and so far have reviewed the locations starting with A B and C. Note that someone deleted the "XXX CDP, New Jersey" redirects, so I've been recreating those as I go. Reviewing this data, there seems to be a bunch of cases that need to be handled:
  1. Entirely new CDPs. Examples include Brainards CDP, New Jersey.
  2. New CDPs that we have articles for under the same name but based on ZCTA data or no data. ZCTA geography is not co-terminus with CDP geography. Example: Asbury, New Jersey (2000 population of 5589 as ZCTA; 2010 population of 273 as Adbury CDP, New Jersey).
  3. Previous CDPs that are split up. Example: Barclay-Kingston, New Jersey now looks like it is split into Barclay CDP, Kingston CDP and possibly Kingston Estates CDP. Kingston CDP is further split into a Middlesex Cty and Somerset Cty part.
  4. Previous CDPs that are defunct. Haven't come across this yet.
  5. Municipal articles, county articles.
  6. Maps that include CDPs need to be updated.
We may eventually need to get the full data set if a bot does not get created, but I wanted to get things going with a summary of the new data and CDPs. Anything I missed? Thanks. --ChrisRuvolo (t) 00:49, 24 February 2011 (UTC)

Attention to category changes

After having requested deletion in November 2010, User:Vegaswikian has decided to populate Category:Eponymous categories for populated places in the United States with a selection of NJ municipalities by eliminating all others, such as county, township/city, pop places categories as seen in Category:Weehawken, New Jersey. I was looking at the history of the category, and I really don't understand what is being done. How does Category:Weehawken, New Jersey not belong in Category:Hudson County, New Jersey? Frankly, the Eponymous category seems unnecessary to me and I would have argued in favor of deletion as overcategorization and self-referential had it gone (or should it go) to CfD. Losing the ability to drill down is categories is defintiely a problem, and should be reversed in all cases. A reader should be able to go Category:States of the United States→Category:New Jersey→Category:Geography of New Jersey→Category:New Jersey counties→Category:Hudson County, New Jersey→Category:Weehawken, New Jersey without having to go to the articles, just because that's how category trees work. I, too, am unsure what the category is trying to achieve. Seems that metro areas, or possibly collectively named towns (ie The Oranges or The Ridgefields), might perhaps fit there, but certainly not at the expense or exclusion of others. Township article titles

Several articles titled Xyz Township, New Jersey have recently been moved to Xyz, New Jersey. They are Woodbridge Township, New Jersey; Piscataway Township, New Jersey; North Brunswick Township, New Jersey and East Brunswick Township, New Jersey. In addition, Old Bridge Township, New Jersey was moved over a separate article about Old Bridge, New Jersey but I am attempting to reverse that. I'm not sure if there are any others. There are move requests at Talk:Branchburg Township, New Jersey and Talk:Bedminster Township, New Jersey. Which format is correct? Station1 (talk) 00:10, 11 March 2011 (UTC)

The issue here are the common name policy and the place naming convention guideline. In the case of Old Bridge, that is the common name in usage and by the principle of least astonishment should point to the township and not the CDP. Vegaswikian (talk) 00:20, 11 March 2011 (UTC)
I agree with the first sentence. My understanding is that Old Bridge is the common name for the CDP and Old Bridge Township is the common name for the township, but I could be wrong about that. Station1 (talk) 00:25, 11 March 2011 (UTC)
Well, I have never ever called the populated place currently at Old Bridge Township, New Jersey Old Bridge Township. It has simply been called Old Bridge. A google search on 'old bridge nj' gets about 1,800,000 hits and for 'old bridge nj cdp' about 8,000 so I don't see the cdp being the primary topic. Vegaswikian (talk) 03:51, 12 March 2011 (UTC)
Just to clarify about Old Bridge in particular: The reason I reversed that move was only because another editor had moved the article about the CDP to Old Bridge, New Jersey/version 2, in effect deleting the article without discussion, and then using its name for the township article. If you're correct about Old Bridge, the CDP article should be moved to Old Bridge, New Jersey (CDP) before the township article is moved, and all the wikilinks pointing to Old Bridge, New Jersey should then be updated as necessary. (The same thing might have occurred regarding Bordentown and Boonton if those moves had gone ahead.) The other cases above were only moves over redirects, so I don't plan to reverse those. As to the bigger question, I know townships in NJ are sometimes called Xyz Township in common use, but I don't know if that's only when there's an adjacent town, borough or city with the same name or what, and I don't know about these particular cases. For example, Google maps shows "North Brunswick Township" and "South Brunswick Township" but "East Brunswick". Station1 (talk) 05:44, 12 March 2011 (UTC)
While those map databases are a source, they can be rather problematic at times. As to using township, Princeton Township clearly is use since there are, as I recall, 3 Princetons in New Jersey. Freehold Township is really a mix in usage, but Freehold Township is needed for clarity to differentiate from Freehold Borough. However in that case, you could probably show that the township is the primary use, but is there any advantage in moving the the article giving the mixed usage? So yes, as you point out there are some of these are Foo Township in common use. I don't believe that North Brunswick or South Brunswick are normally used with the Township attached. However as I recall Brick Township, even though it is the only use in NJ of Brick was most commonly called Brick Township and not Brick. Vegaswikian (talk) 20:52, 12 March 2011 (UTC)
Your opening question asked which is correct. These township names seem to be the exception. If policy was to include the full names of every place, then Newark, New Jersey would be at City of Newark (New Jersey) or City of Newark, New Jersey. Also the article names tend to follow the names of the USPS offices, even with the USPS misnames. So for 08857 you get High Bridge, NJ. For 08816 you get East Brunswick, NJ or E Brunswick, NJ. For 07728 you get Freehold, NJ with the USPS not mentioning that this zip covers at least 2 different populated places sharing that name. Vegaswikian (talk) 21:03, 12 March 2011 (UTC)

Legislative districts

Now that the New Jersey Apportionment Commission has issued it's map of new districts, and while we wait for the inevitable law suits to be done with, how are we going to handle the changes in districts? We obviously need a new page to match New Jersey Legislative Districts, 2001 apportionment. I have created it with the town changes here. Articles on incumbent legislators will also probably need to be carefully watched to point to their old and new districts as the filing deadline in the new districts is less than a week away on April 11. We also need replacements for the maps. I will ping User:ChrisRuvolo who did the last ones to see if he can make new versions, but he is on a wikibreak.
