Getting organized and assigning tasks[edit]

Looking for suggestions here... Next step is to identify an area where we can all pitch in and apply our skills to the creation and editing of NL related topics and articles. WayneRay is very busy creating stubs of the numerous communities in the province. My suggestion is to complete that task with all of our help. HJKeats 19:48, 10 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]

While WayneRay has been creating a large number of articles, he's working with wildly out of date information. Having the populations of communities 50 years ago isn't that useful. If we could work on the communities listed in the last census, that might be better. I'd really like to choose a collaboration article, though, one single article we can all work on, and therefore really be working together. Maybe one of the other cities in NL: Corner Brook, or Mount Pearl, or perhaps a community in Labrador, since I assume they're very sparsely documented on Wikipedia. OzLawyer 00:55, 11 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Yes it is old but I thought it would be a start to the really large number of dead red links = no articles. I have only done two letters so far and added new ones. Shall I stop? If we are only going to have existing villages and hamlets and cities, then the whole list should be cleaned right up? I only put the populations because after I left NFLD in 1966, the outposts and small communities were moved into the larger cities and I felt it was nice, historically, to know early and diminishing populations. Please advise. WayneRay 01:09, 11 June 2006 (UTC)WayneRay[reply]
Well, I'm not the "boss" here--you can do as you wish. And I wouldn't say that these smaller communities should not be included--it would be great if we put them all in eventually. NL geography would be the best documented on Wikipedia, for sure, if that was done. I would, however, say that the current communities--those defined by the province and Statscan, and included as census subdivisions--should be done first. In fact, if we can figure out what existing communities those on your list are now a part of, that would be very useful for inclusion in the articles. The 2001 census numbers for each town are available here, and a map showing which census division each town is located in, which can be used for reference for noting geographic location, can be found here. I realize that this is a very large project, and unless we get hundreds of participants (not likely), it's going to take a long time to get it all up. But if we organize it well, we should be able to start making an impact. OzLawyer 02:32, 11 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Ok go look at the A section and see if this detracts from the article. I initialed the Census Towns in that section so it shows those you think should be worked on, or maybe they could be at the head of the alpha list?? Let me know WayneRay 03:30, 11 June 2006 (UTC)WayneRay[reply]
Making a note of which are census-designated places is good. I would go with bolding census places and italicising non-census places, though. Then it will be very easy to pick them out from the list. OzLawyer 13:51, 12 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]
All Census towns are now bolded WayneRay 16:31, 24 June 2006 (UTC)WayneRay[reply]
Shall we put it to a vote then for this occasion. Rather than ask for suggestions on what area/community to vote on (there are so very many) let's choose from one of the three cities and a Labrador town, Corner Brook, Mount Pearl, St. John's or Happy Valley-Goose Bay! HJKeats 16:52, 11 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Happy Valley-Goose Bay gets my vote. Labrador places are in need of contributors. I'm unfortunately not going to be able to contribute a whole lot these next couple weeks--I really have to focus on getting an articling job. But here's an image to start off the HV-GB cleanup (if others choose to go with that effort):
And don't forget to put the {{nlfocus}} template on the talk page of whatever article you decide to work on. OzLawyer 14:02, 12 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]
My vote goes to Happy Valley-Goose Bay too. Labrador articles in general need a nice bit of work. Jeremiad 15:31, 12 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]
HVG gets my vote also. Let's shoot for 'Feature Article' status HJKeats 15:45, 12 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]
I'll take this as the decision, then, and put the improvement focus tag up. OzLawyer 23:49, 14 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Open letter to Town of Happy Valley-Goose Bay[edit]

Hi fellow NL Wikipedians, I shall be sending an email letter to the Town of Happy Valley-Goose Bay apprising them of our current collaborative project to write about the town. I shall include it here for you all to review and suggest changes to ensure it says what we wish to get from the town. That would be a critical look at the article, suggestion for topics, some input to the topics and pictures if they wish to have them included in the article. Please read it and make suggestions to its content. FYI - The click here statements will have hypertext links embedded in the document

Mrs. Sheppard;

My name is Hayward Keats and I live in St. John’s. For the past year or so I have been writing articles in Wikipedia pertaining to Newfoundland and Labrador and its history, including events, places and its people.

Wikipedia, as may or may not know, is an online free encyclopedia that has grown exponentially to include over 1 million articles in the English language over the past few years. My interest is to create articles of interest to the province and those who wish to know of the province and its historic and colourful history. I would welcome anyone to participate in the creation of new articles and to edit existing articles as necessary.

Lately, a group of us who have an interest in creating articles about Newfoundland and Labrador have formed what is termed a Wikiproject. You may have a look at the current status of this project by clicking here. The group has agreed to write quality articles and as a start we have chosen Happy Valley-Goose Bay to collaborate on.

An article has been started for Happy Valley-Goose Bay and you may view it by clicking here. Please have a look at the article and give me your feedback and opinion. The article will require a great amount of work yet to bring it up to Wikipedia standard for feature article status, a goal we have set to get us working together.

Please help us in creating a very informative article about Happy Valley-Goose Bay and its history. If you so desire you may forward any pictures you feel would lend to the article content. I would also recommend that you or any of the residents of the town to become interested in Wikipedia and lend a hand to this article or any others that is of interest.

Yours Sincerely;

All of the existing communities etc[edit]

I found this website and there is a ton of information including all the now, existing communities. NFLD-Grand Banks Perhaps we could divide the article list into two sections, the one you want to work on of existing cities and then communities and a second of de-fucnt and dead (for use of a better word) communities. The lists on this website are quite extensive. WayneRay 21:28, 11 June 2006 (UTC)WayneRay[reply]

Newfoundland & Labrador Music[edit]

Has anybody checked out the Music of Newfoundland and Labrador page? I've been meaning to focus my attention on this article for a long time, but haven't gotten around to it. As of now, it is absolutely atrocious. I've added it to the "Pages that need the hand of an expert" section. Crabbyass 15:06, 14 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Census Division 8[edit]

I noticed in the Census Division 8 that many of the names are not linked and they are linked incorrectly. Someone can go and make the proper links on all the names not in blue they will then be Bolded on the main article page. Thanks for the work on the other 2 Census pages. WayneRay 20:45, 14 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Fixed the census division page, but not the links on the List page. OzLawyer 23:44, 14 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Bolded the Census Towns from the Divisions list, on the main article page and added three community photos WayneRay 16:14, 21 June 2006 (UTC)WayneRay[reply]

Educational institutions[edit]

I just saw the notice about this WikiProject on the Canadian wikipedians' notice board. If you need any help with school, college or university articles, give us a shout over at Wikipedia:WikiProject Education in Canada. And of course, we're always looking for more members. :-) -- Usgnus 21:39, 16 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]

stubs[edit]

Empty articles are misleading - they conceal the fact (shown by red links) that an article is required. Do not create Green's Harbour, Newfoundland and Labrador until you are ready to give it some useful content. -- RHaworth 07:47, 24 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks but again you and others fail to see the big picture, there is a Wiki Project that about 9 of us are working on. I agree with you however about incomplete articles but this is different,
Wikipedia:WikiProject Newfoundland and Labrador & the one you found my photo on: List of communities in Newfoundland and Labrador are being worked on piece by piece, some are supplying articles , some are supplying and working on links, I am working on photos, and others are doing what they can with support etc. I have completed the A, T, U and most of the B Lists with , for right now, small amounts of information OR A PHOTO, to get things going. I know you are trying to help but there is a bigger picture, Thanks for your input, I will post this conversation on the Talk pages and see what others think. WayneRay 16:31, 24 June 2006 (UTC)WayneRay[reply]

You won't prevent other admins deleting empty stubs, so if you want to advise other memebers of the project of image uploads, keep a small <gallery> here. -- RHaworth 20:26, 24 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]

nfld history[edit]

I used to deliver and subscribe to The Downhomer Magazine, here in London Ontariol, it was always full of histories and peoples and things, perhaps others here should be looking in there as well, I no longer have my past copies but the office has moved to St. John's if anyone is there doing this project. Newfoundland & Labrador stub and category[edit]

  • Yes It would make life a bit easier to identify articles pertinent to NL that need work. IMHO, lets do it. HJKeats 02:47, 6 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Q and R Sections[edit]

I have just about finished the Q and R lists of communities. This time I left out about 50 small settlements and places and only focussed on villages and towns. There are for instance 5 Round Harbour's so I may add all 5. I am still collecting photos of places. WayneRay 21:50, 9 July 2006 (UTC)WayneRay[reply]

The Humber Region[edit]

Hello All,

I have access to "mounds" of information on many of the towns in the Humber Region. I have been working with the Great Humber Joint Council, and I am working on Community Profiling of all of the member towns. So when this report is completed I will be updating all of those towns with the information I have acquired, this will include satellite images, lists of council members and things like that, maybe also contact information (but I am not sure). I have been exclusively working on the Pasadena, Newfoundland and Labrador page. So if you have any suggestions I am MORE then willing to accept them. Also if you need information just leave it on my talk page. If there is anything that needs to be completed from the area just leave it below and I will gather things.

Thanks, Terryrandell

P.S.: I forgot to log in...sorry about that.

Great work, Terry! OzLawyer

Any takers? HJKeats 21:26, 17 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]

While not totally communities related, I just cleaned up this above Category and added the missing subcategories and put the appropriate "articles" which shouldn't have been there, into their appropriate categories and left the section with only the Categories showing. I still have to go to the individual subcategories and make sure they have all of their appropriate Category links as well. I also added missing information related to St. John's, in the article on St. John's. WayneRay 21:34, 23 July 2006 (UTC)WayneRay[reply]

Commons cleanup and links to here[edit]

I have cleaned up the Cat: Newfoundland and Labrador in the Commons and am starting on the Cat: Newfoundland in the Commons. I have created an article called List of communities in Newfoundland and Labrador to match our WikiProject name and am placing photos in there. Some of the articles and categories needed tidying up and I hope they are now better WayneRay 14:11, 12 August 2006 (UTC)WayneRay[reply]

Electorial Districts[edit]

I think it is essential that we try to get some sort of thing up on each of the Electorial Districts. The information is out there it just needs to be put together. Here are a few Websites that I found useful.

Project directory[edit]

Hello. The WikiProject Council has recently updated the Wikipedia:WikiProject Council/Directory. This new directory includes a variety of categories and subcategories which will, with luck, potentially draw new members to the projects who are interested in those specific subjects. Please review the directory and make any changes to the entries for your project that you see fit. There is also a directory of portals, at User:B2T2/Portal, listing all the existing portals. Feel free to add any of them to the portals or comments section of your entries in the directory. The three columns regarding assessment, peer review, and collaboration are included in the directory for both the use of the projects themselves and for that of others. Having such departments will allow a project to more quickly and easily identify its most important articles and its articles in greatest need of improvement. If you have not already done so, please consider whether your project would benefit from having departments which deal in these matters. It is my hope that all the changes to the directory can be finished by the first of next month. Please feel free to make any changes you see fit to the entries for your project before then. If you should have any questions regarding this matter, please do not hesitate to contact me. Thank you. B2T2 18:32, 25 October 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Canadian WikiProjects[edit]

I was looking over your WikiProject and noticed you don't give any reference to other Canadian WikiProjects. I thought it would be a nice addition if you added a list since all of the other Canadian WikiProjects have created directories. Mkdwtalk 04:27, 24 December 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Wikipedia Day Awards[edit]

Hello, all. It was initially my hope to try to have this done as part of Esperanza's proposal for an appreciation week to end on Wikipedia Day, January 15. However, several people have once again proposed the entirety of Esperanza for deletion, so that might not work. It was the intention of the Appreciation Week proposal to set aside a given time when the various individuals who have made significant, valuable contributions to the encyclopedia would be recognized and honored. I believe that, with some effort, this could still be done. My proposal is to, with luck, try to organize the various WikiProjects and other entities of wikipedia to take part in a larger celebrartion of its contributors to take place in January, probably beginning January 15, 2007. I have created yet another new subpage for myself (a weakness of mine, I'm afraid) at User talk:Badbilltucker/Appreciation Week where I would greatly appreciate any indications from the members of this project as to whether and how they might be willing and/or able to assist in recognizing the contributions of our editors. Thank you for your attention. Badbilltucker 21:50, 29 December 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Resettlement[edit]

Correct me if I missed something, but I've read all the articles about Newfoundland, Dominion of Newfoundland, Newfoundland and Labrador, and History of Newfoundland and Labrador, and I didn't see any mention of the controversial resettlement of the 1950's, 60's and 70's. This is such an important part of our history...does it merit it's own page? What do you guys think? Or should we just mention it in the other articles? A good reference would be here -- Crabbyass 02:17, 2 May 2007 (UTC)[reply]

I believe there should b an article about the subject. I know there are some wonderful pictures around that could do the article justice. Also the List of communities in Newfoundland and Labrador could be better laid out such that it would list which communities that were re-settled and those that were abandoned or otherwise just died out.--HJKeats 11:36, 2 May 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Newfoundland Pine Marten[edit]

I just checked and there is no current article about the Newfoundland Pine Marten; Pine Marten links to the European Pine Marten and there is a link from there to the American Marten, of which ours is a subspecies. Given that it's on the endangered list I think this would be a good candidate for an article. Also - anyone know the status of the breeding project at Salmonier? The Nature Park web page is way out of date and lists the last update as December 2001.Vulcan's Forge 01:48, 19 May 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Commons Photos[edit]

I have just spend one weeks vacation on the west coast of Newfoundland and photographed quite a bit of the small coastal towns, post offices, lakes and Long Range Mountains. I have started adding the photos to the article List of communities in Newfoundland and Labrador, you can link there from our Wiki article by the same name. I will be adding more later and feel free to use them while expanding the communities articles WayneRay 14:16, 14 August 2007 (UTC)WayneRay[reply]

Articles for smaller communities[edit]

I've added stubs for several smaller communities in central; they need some work. Most of them were put in the communities in NL category and have almost no information, but it's a start. We really need to focus on providing information on smaller towns just as much as the larger ones like St. John's. ~NeonFire372~ 17:13, 9 November 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Template merge with WikiProject Canada[edit]

Like the other provinces, this project's template has been merged with the {{WikiProject Canada}} template. You can now tag articles' talk pages with {{WikiProject Canada | nl=yes}}. This will allow you to assess articles using class= and importance=. Once you have tagged a few and waited a few days for the bot to notice the changes, you will have a WP:1.0 assessment table here.

It can also be used with {{Infobox Settlement|pushpin_map=Newfoundland}}, such as in Stephenville, Newfoundland and Labrador.

Request to modify the template {{Infobox Settlement}} to accommodate the uniqueness of the Province[edit]

Currently there are 282 incorporated municipalities within the province as can be seen from the Department of Municipal Affairs official list, as found here. Then there are many communities that once existed but came under the Resettlement Act of 1965 and eventually de-populated. Many of these communities can be found here. Then there were communities that existed only as fishing stations for many years and finally became abandoned and while still others were permanent settlements but they too were abandoned for various reasons. A 1965 compiled list can be found here. Certainly every one of these communities will, at some point in time, have an article created for and about them.

Hence my suggestion to make some subtle changes to the infobox {{Infobox Settlement}} to account for the uniqueness of these communities.

Wikipedian Neelix has kindly agreed to run a script to incorporate the infbox into all of the existing community articles. But before this is done we would like to get a consensus from everyone concerned to make changes to the infobox.

Initially I would like to suggest the addition of field name to include “status“ of the community which can be populated with terms like abandoned, resettled, amalgamated, etc.

Please express your opinion and offer suggestions. --HJKeats (talk) 00:58, 23 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]

I have had a go developing a standard template and applied it on the Town of Bay de Verde. If everyone is in agreement, this could be the standard template for all communities in the province. --HJKeats (talk) 13:13, 23 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]
{{Infobox Settlement}} has quite a few customizable blank fields that can accommodate these specific needs, there's no need to alter the template, just use its features. Here are a few usable fields:
|blank_emblem_type =
|blank_emblem_size =
|area_blank1_title =
|area_blank1_km2 =
|population_blank1_title =
|population_blank1 =
|blank_name =
|blank_info =
|blank1_name =
|blank1_info =
|blank2_name =
|blank2_info =
|blank3_name =
|blank3_info =
|blank4_name =
|blank4_info =
|blank5_name =
|blank5_info =
|blank6_name =
|blank6_info =

Many more parameters can be customized, depending on where you want the field placed. --Qyd (talk) 02:30, 27 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Opposition leaders[edit]

Can someone help me with Leader of the Opposition (Newfoundland and Labrador)? I got stuck at 1972 as I can't find who was the Leader of the Opposition from 1969 to 1971 when Frank Moores was Tory Party leader but didn't have a seat in the House of Assembly. St. John's Article needs work[edit]

I think that the St. John's article should be a major focus for improvement on this project. It was just rejected for featured article status this week based on some very rational reasons. As the primate capital of NL theres no reason we shouldn't be able to work together to improve the article.

I just expanded the lead-in paragraph (may need proofing) and tried to give a well sourced into to the (1) geography and importance, (2) population, (3) history, and (4) modern status. As one of the reasons it was rejected.

While I realize there are a lot of other cities that deserve just as much attention, I really think that the St. John's article should be one of the most important tasks/achievements for this project... Its the capital of pretty much all forms for the province, likely one of the most viewed pages, and its only B status.

There is a lot of good and acurate information in the article, but there is NO citations. The only citations in it are the ones I just added to the lead-in. Maybe we can work on the paragraphs one at a time and get this page to the quality it deserves...

Harold Northcliffe, man of mystery or government spy?[edit]

I was workin on the Grand Falls-Windsor, Newfoundland and Labrador article and came across the gent. After looking about I found that the only mentions of the man were Wikipedia, mirrors and the town's web site, and they can't even spell the name of their major employer. Turns out Harold Northcliffe was in the area on the behalf of Alfred Harmsworth who had a younger brother Harold. Now about the time Harold Northcliffe was checking out the place Alfred got a promotion, to Baron Northcliffe. So does anyone know if the two Harolds are the same person? I give up already![edit]

I started created reasonably-started stubs for many of the red-linked articles on Music of Newfoundland and Labrador. Every single freaking one of them has been marked for speedy deletion. Last week, I did dozens of articles in a similar manner for Trinidad and Tobago, and NONE of them were marked for speedy deletion.

I am a big fan of NL music, and hate seeing red-links, but the speedy deletion BS has p'd me off, and I'm done trying. Bwilkins (talk) 13:25, 4 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Hang on -- I removed those speedy delete tags. However, you need to get some referencing in place ASAP, as per WP:RS. In future, please have all of your sources in the article before you post it. Thanks! Ecoleetage (talk) 13:43, 4 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Changes to the WP:1.0 assessment scheme[edit]

As you may have heard, we at the Wikipedia 1.0 Editorial Team recently made some changes to the assessment scale, including the addition of a new level. The new description is available at WP:ASSESS.

  • The new C-Class represents articles that are beyond the basic Start-Class, but which need additional references or cleanup to meet the standards for B-Class.
  • The criteria for B-Class have been tightened up with the addition of a rubric, and are now more in line with the stricter standards already used at some projects.
  • A-Class article reviews will now need more than one person, as described here.

Each WikiProject should already have a new C-Class category at Category:C-Class_articles. If your project elects not to use the new level, you can simply delete your WikiProject's C-Class category and clarify any amendments on your project's assessment/discussion pages. The bot is already finding and listing C-Class articles.

Please leave a message with us if you have any queries regarding the introduction of the revised scheme. This scheme should allow the team to start producing offline selections for your project and the wider community within the next year. Thanks for using the Wikipedia 1.0 scheme! For the 1.0 Editorial Team, §hepBot (Disable) 21:09, 4 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

I just looked through a 1968 copy of the Gazetteer of Canada: Newfoundland and Labrador and realized that our list of communities in Newfoundland and Labrador doesn't list anywhere near the number communities listed there. I started adding some, but I quickly realized how long that would take, so I decided to check here to make sure I'm thinking about this properly. List of communities in Newfoundland and Labrador states, "Newfoundland and Labrador at Confederation in 1949 had nearly 1450 communities." Obviously, not all 1450 are listed. Is that what we're striving for? Is the idea to create an article for every one of those 1450 communities and to list them all on this list?

Also, it seemed to me that more than 1450 communities were listed in the Gazetteer, though I could be wrong. Is anyone familiar with that publication who might know whether or not all the listings are actually communities as opposed to... land formations or something? Neelix (talk) 19:54, 24 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

I have a unpublished manuscript concerning all the postal stations in NFLD and Labrador, I am slowly filling in all the listings and there are tons more in my manuscript than is on this list. You are right there. Some were just 1 or 2 houses while others were only on the CNR Line and later vanished. WayneRay (talk) 20:26, 24 July 2008 (UTC)WayneRay[reply]

Wikipedia 0.7 articles have been selected for Newfoundland and Labrador[edit]

Wikipedia 0.7 is a collection of English Wikipedia articles due to be released on DVD, and available for free download, later this year. The Wikipedia:Version 1.0 Editorial Team has made an automated selection of articles for Version 0.7.

We would like to ask you to review the articles selected from this project. These were chosen from the articles with this project's talk page tag, based on the rated importance and quality. If there are any specific articles that should be removed, please let us know at Wikipedia talk:Version 0.7. You can also nominate additional articles for release, following the procedure at Wikipedia:Release Version Nominations.

A list of selected articles with cleanup tags, sorted by project, is available. The list is automatically updated each hour when it is loaded. Please try to fix any urgent problems in the selected articles. A team of copyeditors has agreed to help with copyediting requests, although you should try to fix simple issues on your own if possible.

We would also appreciate your help in identifying the version of each article that you think we should use, to help avoid vandalism or POV issues. These versions can be recorded at this project's subpage of User:SelectionBot/0.7. We are planning to release the selection for the holiday season, so we ask you to select the revisions before October 20. At that time, we will use an automatic process to identify which version of each article to release, if no version has been manually selected. Thanks! Image needs replacement - Clarenville, Newfoundland and Labrador[edit]

Hello all...

An image used in the article, specifically Image:Hillsfromfar.jpg, has a little bit of a licensing issue. The image was uploaded back when the rules around image uploading were less restrictive. It is presumed that the uploader was willing to license the picture under the GFDL license but was not clear in that regard. As such, the image, while not at risk of deletion, is likely not clearly licensed to allow for free use in any future use of this article. If anyone has an image that can replace this, or can go take one and upload it, it would be best.

You have your mission, take your camera and start clicking.--Jordan 1972 (talk) 21:29, 4 October 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Coordinators' working group[edit]

Hi! I'd like to draw your attention to the new WikiProject coordinators' working group, an effort to bring both official and unofficial WikiProject coordinators together so that the projects can more easily develop consensus and collaborate. This group has been created after discussion regarding possible changes to the A-Class review system, and that may be one of the first things discussed by interested coordinators.

All designated project coordinators are invited to join this working group. If your project hasn't formally designated any editors as coordinators, but you are someone who regularly deals with coordination tasks in the project, please feel free to join as well. — Delievered by §hepBot (Disable) on behalf of the WikiProject coordinators' working group at 06:09, 28 February 2009 (UTC)[reply]

I am looking for useful tips on getting Beaumont-Hamel Newfoundland Memorial up to GAN. I have completely re-written the article and it is nearly to an acceptable state. As a memorial, it is unique because it is a preserved battlefield park dedicated the the Newfoundland Regiment but contained numerous sub-elements. I need help;

  1. developing the significance of the memorial, more so its influence on Newfoundland.
  2. Someone with a copy of Smallwood's Encyclopedia of Newfoundland and Labrador please and see if additional details can be added anywhere. I Could use something about him offering space for the 51st highland memorial on the site
  3. obtaining an aerial image or map that would give people some perspective.

Any help would be appreciated.--Labattblueboy (talk) 12:44, 13 March 2009 (UTC)[reply]

This is a notice to let you know about Article alerts, a fully-automated subscription-based news delivery system designed to notify WikiProjects and Taskforces when articles are entering Articles for deletion, Requests for comment, Peer review and other workflows (full list). The reports are updated on a daily basis, and provide brief summaries of what happened, with relevant links to discussion or results when possible. A certain degree of customization is available; WikiProjects and Taskforces can choose which workflows to include, have individual reports generated for each workflow, have deletion discussion transcluded on the reports, and so on. An example of a customized report can be found here.

If you are already subscribed to Article Alerts, it is now easier to report bugs and request new features. We are also in the process of implementing a "news system", which would let projects know about ongoing discussions on a wikipedia-wide level, and other things of interest. The developers also note that some subscribing WikiProjects and Taskforces use the display=none parameter, but forget to give a link to their alert page. Your alert page should be located at "Wikipedia:PROJECT-OR-TASKFORCE-HOMEPAGE/Article alerts". Questions and feedback should be left at Wikipedia talk:Article alerts.

Message sent by User:Addbot to all active wiki projects per request, Comments on the message and bot are welcome here.

Addition[edit]

Just a heads-up to everyone here that in the process of cleaning up the fact that Wikipedia:WikiProject France/Saint Pierre and Miquelon work group had rather laughably been added to Wikipedia:WikiProject Caribbean, I've chosen to add it to this Wikiproject's category — while I know that as part of France rather than Canada it's not strictly a Newfoundland topic, it does have a closely interrelated history that WikiProject Newfoundlanders are almost infinitely more likely to be familiar with than WikiProject Caribbeaners. And given that it's a workgroup rather than a full Wikiproject of its own, putting it in a North American context means adding it to related WikiProjects — of which Newfoundland certainly makes far more sense than the Caribbean.

So just to clarify, I'm not suggesting that it is, strictly speaking, a Newfoundland topic — WikiProject France is the primary owner. But there is enough of an overlap of interest that WikiProject NL should at least maintain a connection to it somehow. Bearcat (talk) 16:30, 4 August 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Newfoundland and Labrador articles have been selected for the Wikipedia 0.8 release[edit]

Version 0.8 is a collection of Wikipedia articles selected by the Wikipedia 1.0 team for offline release on USB key, DVD and mobile phone. Articles were selected based on their assessed importance and quality, then article versions (revisionIDs) were chosen for trustworthiness (freedom from vandalism) using an adaptation of the WikiTrust algorithm.

We would like to ask you to review the Newfoundland and Labrador articles and revisionIDs we have chosen. Selected articles are marked with a diamond symbol (♦) to the right of each article, and this symbol links to the selected version of each article. If you believe we have included or excluded articles inappropriately, please contact us at Wikipedia talk:Version 0.8 with the details. You may wish to look at your WikiProject's articles with cleanup tags and try to improve any that need work; if you do, please give us the new revisionID at Wikipedia talk:Version 0.8. We would like to complete this consultation period by midnight UTC on Monday, October 11th.

We have greatly streamlined the process since the Version 0.7 release, so we aim to have the collection ready for distribution by the end of October, 2010. As a result, we are planning to distribute the collection much more widely, while continuing to work with groups such as One Laptop per Child and Wikipedia for Schools to extend the reach of Wikipedia worldwide. Please help us, with your WikiProject's feedback!

This section of this list article needs cleanup. In particular, references based on reliable sources (not user-generated media such as blogs, forums, tweets, etc.) for the numerous of nicknames are required, as well as weeding out editor-derived/questionable nicknames from the genuine nicknames of widespread usage. I've cleaned up the Alberta section, and am looking to the members of the applicable provincial/territorial WikiProjects to help out with the other sections including this one. Fictional town in Newfoundland[edit]

I just removed a PROD template from this, which had been unref'd since 2009. The ref for the placename was easy to find, as there are ten such placenames in Newfoundland alone and more elsewhere in Canada. None are listed as settlements, however, and I'm not sure where Deadman's Bay is in the regions listed on CGNDB. I've left that mention, with a cite needed tag, and the categories as-is. Why people feel the urge to PROD things for being unref'd instead of looking for a reference, is quite beyond me, but arm a monkey with a button, they will push it.Skookum1 (talk) 06:53, 12 August 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Comment on the WikiProject X proposal[edit]

Hello there! As you may already know, most WikiProjects here on Wikipedia struggle to stay active after they've been founded. I believe there is a lot of potential for WikiProjects to facilitate collaboration across subject areas, so I have submitted a grant proposal with the Wikimedia Foundation for the "WikiProject X" project. WikiProject X will study what makes WikiProjects succeed in retaining editors and then design a prototype WikiProject system that will recruit contributors to WikiProjects and help them run effectively. Please review the proposal here and leave feedback. If you have any questions, you can ask on the proposal page or leave a message on my talk page. Thank you for your time! (Also, sorry about the posting mistake earlier. If someone already moved my message to the talk page, feel free to remove this posting.) Harej (talk) 22:47, 1 October 2014 (UTC)[reply]

WikiProject X is live![edit]

Hello everyone!

You may have received a message from me earlier asking you to comment on my WikiProject X proposal. The good news is that WikiProject X is now live! In our first phase, we are focusing on research. At this time, we are looking for people to share their experiences with WikiProjects: good, bad, or neutral. We are also looking for WikiProjects that may be interested in trying out new tools and layouts that will make participating easier and projects easier to maintain. If you or your WikiProject are interested, check us out! Note that this is an opt-in program; no WikiProject will be required to change anything against its wishes. Please let me know if you have any questions. Thank you!

Note: To receive additional notifications about WikiProject X on this talk page, please add this page to Wikipedia:WikiProject X/Newsletter. Otherwise, this will be the last notification sent about WikiProject X.

Each outline provides a topical summary of its subject, as well as a bird's eye view of the subject's entire coverage on Wikipedia. Together they comprise one of Wikipedia's navigation subsystems. See Portal:Contents/Outlines.

New 10,000 Challenge for Canada[edit]

Hi, Wikipedia:WikiProject Canada/The 10,000 Challenge is up and running based on Wikipedia:The 10,000 Challenge for the UK which has currently produced over 2200 article improvements and creations. WikiProject collaboration notice from the Portals WikiProject[edit]

The reason I am contacting you is because there are one or more portals that fall under this subject, and the Portals WikiProject is currently undertaking a major drive to automate portals that may affect them.

Portals are being redesigned.

The new design features are being applied to existing portals.

At present, we are gearing up for a maintenance pass of portals in which the introduction section will be upgraded to no longer need a subpage. In place of static copied and pasted excerpts will be self-updating excerpts displayed through selective transclusion, using the template {{Transclude lead excerpt}}.

The discussion about this can be found here.

Maintainers of specific portals are encouraged to sign up as project members here, noting the portals they maintain, so that those portals are skipped by the maintenance pass. Currently, we are interested in upgrading neglected and abandoned portals. There will be opportunity for maintained portals to opt-in later, or the portal maintainers can handle upgrading (the portals they maintain) personally at any time.

Background[edit]

On April 8th, 2018, an RfC ("Request for comment") proposal was made to eliminate all portals and the portal namespace. On April 17th, the Portals WikiProject was rebooted to handle the revitalization of the portal system. On May 12th, the RfC was closed with the result to keep portals, by a margin of about 2 to 1 in favor of keeping portals.

There's an article in the current edition of the Signpost interviewing project members about the RfC and the Portals WikiProject.

Since the reboot, the Portals WikiProject has been busy building tools and components to upgrade portals.

So far, 84 editors have joined.

If you would like to keep abreast of what is happening with portals, see the newsletter archive.

If you have any questions about what is happening with portals or the Portals WikiProject, please post them on the WikiProject's talk page.

Thank you.    — The Transhumanist   07:49, 30 May 2018 (UTC)[reply]

A new newsletter directory is out![edit]

A new Newsletter directory has been created to replace the old, out-of-date one. If your WikiProject and its taskforces have newsletters (even inactive ones), or if you know of a missing newsletter (including from sister projects like WikiSpecies), please include it in the directory! The template can be a bit tricky, so if you need help, just post the newsletter on the template's talk page and someone will add it for you.

Merge in St. John's WikiProject[edit]

As discussed at WP:Miscellany for deletion/Wikipedia:WikiProject St. John's, Newfoundland and Labrador, I expressed interest in merging WP:WikiProject St. John's, Newfoundland and Labrador into this one. Firstly, the project is marked defunct and has been mostly abandoned since 2012. One of the options to WP:REVIVE a project is to merge it into another project with similar scope. Given the fact that Greater St. John's contains close to 40% of the provinces population, and is the capital city, there is a great deal of overlap. Plus, considering this WikiProject itself is marked as inactive, merging these together would give the best chance for the combined project to be revived. BLAIXX 22:11, 10 June 2019 (UTC)[reply]

User script to detect unreliable sources[edit]

I have (with the help of others) made a small user script to detect and highlight various links to unreliable sources and predatory journals. Some of you may already be familiar with it, given it is currently the 39th most imported script on Wikipedia. The idea is that it takes something like

  • John Smith "Article of things" Deprecated.com. Accessed 2020-02-14. (John Smith "[https://www.deprecated.com/article Article of things]" ''Deprecated.com''. Accessed 2020-02-14.)

and turns it into something like

It will work on a variety of links, including those from {{cite web}}, {{cite journal}} and {{doi}}.

The script is mostly based on WP:RSPSOURCES, WP:NPPSG and WP:CITEWATCH and a good dose of common sense. I'm always expanding coverage and tweaking the script's logic, so general feedback and suggestions to expand coverage to other unreliable sources are always welcomed.

Do note that this is not a script to be mindlessly used, and several caveats apply. Details and instructions are available at User:Headbomb/unreliable. Questions, comments and requests can be made at User talk:Headbomb/unreliable.
