William Carter (bishop)

The Rt Rev William Marlborough Carter[1], KCMG, DD was an eminent Anglican Bishop in the late 19th and early 20th centuries[2].
Born in July 1850[3] and educated at Eton and Pembroke College, Oxford, he was ordained in 1974[4]. Following curacies at Christ Church, West Bromwich[5] and All Saints, Bakewell[6] he was Secretary to the Eton Mission, Hackney until his elevation o the Episcopate as Bishop of Zululand in 1889. He was translated to Pretoria in 1902 and Cape Town in 1909[7]. He died on 14 February 1941[8]. There is a memorial to him at St. George's Cathedral, Cape Town[9].
