"With Friends Like Steve's" is the fifteenth episode of the second season and the twenty first overall episode of the animated comedy series American Dad!. It aired on Fox in the United States on May 7, 2006, and is written by Erik Durbin and directed by John Aoshima.[1]

In the episode, Steve loses interest in his activities with Stan, who quickly dumps him for Barry, a kid who appreciates him. But Barry's very different when he's not taking his vitamins. Meanwhile, Roger's beer-swilling skills come in handy when he wants to join a fraternity at Hayley's college.

Plot[edit]

When Steve tires of hanging out with his dad, Stan discovers that Steve's mentally retarded friend Barry is actually interested in his stories. Stan then gives Barry all the attention, even encouraging him to stop taking "vitamins" that he has been taking every few hours. Steve quickly becomes jealous of Barry, but then notices an alarming change in his friend's behavior, as Barry becomes a Gary Oldman-sounding evil genius. Barry frames Steve for breaking Stan's prized commemorative plate collection and convinces Stan and Francine to send their son to a youth penal camp. He then buries Francine in the back yard and pulls a pistol on Stan, holding him hostage.

Meanwhile, Roger joins a college fraternity as a pledge, encouraging Hayley's group to study the subculture. The girls quickly become drunk, however, and only interested in partying. Afterward, a hung-over Hayley is ashamed she didn't get the Eskimo studies program she originally wanted, though she does sleep with an Eskimo. When Roger learns that after a party, pledges clean while frat brothers sleep, he quits the fraternity.

At the prison camp, Steve discovers that the pills the inmates are being given to retard their criminal aggression are the same vitamins that Barry has been taking. With two other inmates, he escapes the camp and makes his way home by using skills that he learned from his dad, including identity theft and talking to dolphins. In a scene parodying the iocane powder scene from The Princess Bride (including Stan being tied up and blindfolded), Steve places two drinks in front of him and Barry, saying one of them has Barry's vitamin, and tells Barry to choose one. Barry even references the movie when he tries to figure out which drink to choose.

The episode ends with Barry back to his normal, retarded self and Stan again hating him. When Stan asks Steve how he knew which drink Barry would choose, Steve says he put vitamins in both (again parodying The Princess Bride), while acting just as retarded as Barry, even sporting his voice. Stan then suggests they dig up Francine so she can make them breakfast.

Reception[edit]

The episode was watched by a total of 6.60 million people, this made it the third most watched show on Animation Domination that night, beating King of the Hill but losing to Family Guy and The Simpsons with 8.47 million.[2]
