- The terms "Ornate Wolf" and "Painted Wolf" have been used to refer to the African Wild Dog, Lycaon pictus.
- The term "Gold Wolf" has been used for the Golden Jackal.
- The term "Egyptian Wolf" has been used for the Egyptian jackal, one of the larger subspecies of golden jackal.
- Some experts have suggested that the following four subspecies of Canis lupus be recognized as separate canid species:
- Eastern Wolf (North America)
- Himalayan Wolf
