Wulguru is a suburb of Townsville, Queensland.
Wulguru is a fine suburb with a variety of different houses and landscapes. The bushy hills near Lexington Street and Coral Sea Crescent provide panoramic views of Townsville and Magnetic Island. However, most of this lovely area is owned by the Australian Army and is fenced off. "Wulguru" is the name of an extinct Aboriginal language and it is claimed that the word itself means "windy valley". The Edison Street Plaza is the main shopping centre of the suburb consisting of a Edison Street Seafood, video hire, Chinese dining, a bakery, a St vincent De Paul store, a butcher, a hairdresser and a handy mini-mart. Across the road from this thriving shopping plaza is Wulguru State School which is where the vast majority of Wulguru children are educated. Next to the school is a beautiful park and several good soccer fields as well as a scout hall. Other schools close to the vicinity of Wulguru are Southern Cross Catholic School and William Ross High School.
Wulguru is a centrally located suburb with two major shopping centers near by being Fairfield Waters and Annandale Central.
Around Wright Street there are many beautiful Queensland-style houses. The best thing about Wulguru is the friendliness of all the residents, the privacy, the proximity to shopping centres and other places of interest and the unique style of having, in some places, a backyard on the bush. In the scrub incresting Wulguru, people have witnessed kangaroos fighting each other, eagles attempted to kill baby kangaroos, the army taking live training and most importantly some unimaginally spectacular sunsets. Wulguru's population is 4450.
At the corner of Diamantina St and Stuart Drive (road to Charters Towers) is a large block of land at the base of Mount Stuart (opposite the Wendal Shopping Centre). During World War II, this was the site of No. 3 Fighter Sector RAAF including bunkers.
3 Fighter Sector Headquarters comprised 32 rooms in the large rectangular concrete building with caneite partitions forming various passageways. The building still stands today and is 60 ft X 42 ft. The mezzanine floor has long since disappeared.
The bunker structure is apparently classified in the Heritage register (ref: 601708) and encompasses the boundary of Diamantina Street, Stuart Drive and Hill Street, Wulguru.
Wulguru is home to the most indigenous Australians than any other suburb in the Townsville region.
Overall, Wulguru is a great part of Townsville, simply teeming with delightful people, a rich history and a natural beauty to which this country boasts.
