[edit] Simplified Chinese characters
In the standardized character forms, most noticeable is that they contain newly created regular script characters and many characters substituted for other characters. These are collectively called Simplified Chinese characters.
Among characters that are not newly created or substituted, most are orthodox variants. A few common vulgar variants have been adopted. For example:
- 来 This character is an extremely common vulgar variant, having appeared as early as the Han Dynasty, and being more common than 來 in writing. The Taiwan standard and Hong Kong standard use the orthodox 來.

The structural characteristics of characters in this standard is called 新字形 (pinyin: xīn zìxíng, "new character form"). Among characters that are not newly created or substituted, most are orthodox variants. A few common vulgar variants have been adopted. For example:
- 青 Like the Taiwan, Hong Kong, and Japanese standard, this standard adopts a common vulgar variant instead of the orthodox 靑.
Other characteristics include that:
- Unlike other standards, this standard writes the component 儿 as ハ in when there are other components under it, such as in 空囧夌. Some instances are written as 几, such as in 虎船.
- Some instances of horizontal lines in most standards are written as a dot (丶) in this standard, such as in 今食
- Like the Japanese standard, both sides of the 艹 radical are merged into 艹.
