Xiis, also spelled Heis or Hais, is a town on the coast of the northern Sanaag region of Somalia.
[edit] History
Xiis is said to be identical with the ancient trade post called Mundu that is mentioned in the Periplus of the Erythraean Sea, an anonymous account by an Alexandrian salesman from the 1st century AD. Pottery and shards of Roman glassware from a time between the 1st and 5th centuries have been found near the city.[1]
Situated in the Sanaag region, local control is disputed between Somaliland, a self-declared independent republic that is internationally recognized as an autonomous region of Somalia, the autonomous Puntland region in northeastern Somalia, and HBM-SSC (Hoggaanka Badbaadada iyo Mideynta SSC), a local unionist group whose goal is the creation of its own regional administration (Sool, Sanaag and Cayn or SSC).[2]
[edit] Demographics
Xiis is principally inhabited by Somalis from the Warsangeli and Habar Jeclo Isaaq sub-clans.
