The School was established on 9 April 1979, under the kind patronage of Maharaja Amarinder Singh of Patiala , the son of Maharajdhiraj Yadavindra Singh of Patiala , who was the founder of Yadavindra Public School, Patiala. The school is spread over 20 acres (81,000 m2) of lush green land in a calm, pleasant and pollution free environment. The surroundings are picturesque and ideal for an educational institution.
The School is affiliated to the Council for the Indian School Certificate Examination(C.I.S.C.E.), New Delhi which offers ICSE(Indian Certificate of Secondary Education)-Class X & ISC (Indian School Certificate)-Class XII courses. Indian School Certificate (Class XII) is treated as equivalent to the Senior School Examination of the University of Scotland . This implies that pupils will not be required to obtain “A” level qualifications, or to complete bridging courses, while seeking entry to Universities in the UK and other overseas Universities in the Commonwealth. (Indian School Certification is the only qualification from India that has been granted this special recognition). The school offers both boarding and day-boarding facilities.
The school is a non profit institution. All the profits are ploughed back to develop the infrastructure. The school is equipped with computers in every classroom. The overall personality of the students is catered to. Sports like squash, soccer, hockey, cricket, tennis, etc. are offered. Sports are a compulsory part of the curriculum. The school achieved fame and acknowledgement for being awarded as the most computer literate school in the state of Punjab in 2004. Another remarkable achievement of Y.P.S. Mohali in 2004 was its silver jublee celebrations.
Currently the principal of this prestigious institute is Mr. Janajit Ray.
Y.P.S. has changed a lot in the past few years with the opening of a new junior wing and a kindergarten block. Keeping up to date with technology, the school has installed a computer and an LCD projector in every classroom while revamping the science laboratories and opening a new learning and development centre.
