[edit] History
The school was named after Yick Wo (Americanization: Lee Yick), a Chinese owner of a laundry who won a landmark Supreme Court case (Yick Wo v. Hopkins).
Since the school was founded in 1983, Shirlene Tong served as principal until she retired in the 2003-2004 school year. Darlene Lim was the principal until the 2006-2007 school year. Since then, Yvonne Chong has been serving as principal.
In recent years it has received 2 California Distinguished Schools awards (one in 1997 and the other in 2000). Yick Wo also ranks as one of the best elementary schools in the San Francisco Unified School District.[citation needed][who?]
