[edit] History
- May 7, 1872 (June 12 in Gregorian calendar): Yokohama Station (original station, now Sakuragichō Station) opens as one of the first railway stations in Japan.
- July 11, 1887: The railway is extended from Yokohama to Kōzu Station. Through trains between Shimbashi Station and Kōzu Station require a switchback at Yokohama Station.
- August 1, 1898: A line bypassing Yokohama Station is opened to avoid the switchback. Through trains stop at Kanagawa Station or Hodogaya Station instead of Yokohama Station, and shuttle trains connect Yokohama and Hodogaya.
- August 15, 1915: The second Yokohama Station opens close to the present day Takashimachō Station to allow Tōkaidō Main Line trains to call at Yokohama Station. The original Yokohama Station is renamed Sakuragichō Station. The Yokohama–Hodogaya shuttle trains cease. JR East uses this date as the opening date of the current Yokohama Station.[1]
- September 1, 1923: The station is destroyed by a fire in the 1923 Great Kanto earthquake.
- September 7, 1923: The station reopens with a temporary building.
- March 18, 1928: Tokyo Yokohama Railway (now the Tokyu Toyoko Line) is connected to the station.
- October 15, 1928: The third (current) Yokohama Station opens on the north side of the second station. The Tōkaidō Main Line also moves to its current route.
- February 5, 1930: Keihin Electric Railway (now the Keikyu Main Line) is connected to the station.
- December 27, 1933: Jinchū Railway (now the Sotetsu Main Line) is connected to the station.
- March 29, 1945: The station is destroyed in the Yokohama Air Raid.
- December 9, 1957: The north side underground entrance opens.
- December 1, 1965: The MARS on-line ticket reservation system is introduced at the station.
- September 4, 1976: The Yokohama City Subway Line No. 3 is connected to Yokohama Station.
- November 7, 1980: The new east station building and east-west passage open.
- January 31, 2004: The Tōkyū Tōyoko Line platform reopens underground.
