York College was founded in 1890 by the United Brethren Church. In 1946 the merger of the United Brethren Church and the Evangelical Church (see Evangelical Association) transferred control of the school to the Evangelical United Brethren Church. In 1956 the church transferred control to members of the Churches of Christ.

York is accredited by the Higher Learning Commission of the North Central Association of Colleges and Schools. The college provides both residential, traditional undergraduate education and online, non-traditional programs. Degrees offered include the Bachelor of Arts, Bachelor of Science, and Bachelor of Business Administration.

York's student-to-faculty ratio is 12:1. Student enrollment is 507 for the fall 2011 semester with a typical class size of 22. The student population consists of men and women from 30 states and 15 countries.

The York Panthers compete in the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA) Division II and the National Christian College Athletic Association. York College is a founding member of the Midlands Collegiate Athletic Conference composed of 10 liberal arts colleges with similar philosophies.
Extracurricular organizations include 8 social clubs, 12 athletic teams, 4 performance groups, 4 Christian outreach groups, 3 literary publications, and a wide range of intramural sports.
