Zimmer was founded in 1927 and is headquartered in Warsaw, Indiana, where it is part of the medical devices business cluster there.

Zimmer designs, develops, manufactures and markets orthopaedic reconstructive, spinal and trauma devices, dental implants, and related orthopaedic surgical products. Zimmer has operations in more than 25 countries around the world and sells products in more than 100 countries.[1]
In British English, a "Zimmer" frame has grown to be used as a genericized trademark term for any such kind of walking frame.

Zimmer's 2009 sales were approximately $4.095 billion, slightly less than its high of $4.121 billion, in 2008. The company is supported by the efforts of approximately 8,200 employees worldwide, 4,900 of whom reside in the United States and 3,300 of whom are outside the U.S., primarily in Europe and Japan.[2]
