PedidosYa is an Uruguayan multinational online food ordering and delivery service based in Montevideo, Uruguay. Founded in 2009 and merged with Delivery Hero in 2017, the company operates in 15 Latin American countries.[1]

In 2020, the company launched PedidosYa Market, a series of dark stores for online purchases, with local pickup and home delivery, which as of May 2022 had 170 stores in 13 Latin American countries.[2][3]

History

[edit]

Pedidos Ya was founded in 2009 by Ariel Burschtin, Álvaro García and Ruben Sosenke, three students from Universidad ORT Uruguay, who had presented the idea of a web page to easily order chivitos as part of a university project in 2008.[4]

In 2008 they presented the project to the National Agency for Research and Innovation (ANII), which granted them a subsidy of US$20,000, and a year later the first online platform prototype with 40 restaurants was launched in Uruguay.[5] In addition, Fondo Emprender granted an initial capital of US$50,000.[6] It quickly expanded into Argentina and Chile, and by 2011, the company was already operating in Brazil, Colombia, Venezuela, and Peru.[7] Later it began to operate in Ecuador, Paraguay, Puerto Rico, Panamá and Mexico.[8] In 2011 the company received an investment from the London-based venture capital firm Atomico and Kaszek.[9]

In 2014, PedidosYa was acquired 70% by the German company Delivery Hero.[10] In 2016 it began to allow online payments.[11] In June 2017, it was listed on the Frankfurt Stock Exchange with a value of US$ 5,140 million.[12] This year it underwent a rebranding.[13]

In April 2020, within the framework of the COVID-19 pandemic, the company opened the first PedidosYa Market dark stores in Buenos Aires, Santiago, and Montevideo.[14] In September, PedidosYa acquired Glovo's operations in Latin America, following its acquisition by Delivery Hero.[15][16]

Locations
