Morishige Katsuren[edit]

I'm removing Morishige Katsuren (勝連盛重) from the list. He's on the Japanese wiki's list and I've found 2-3 references to him as a national treasure via Google searches, but he's not in any of the reference materials I've checked. Also, the Ryukyu Shimpo reports that 1985 was the first time an Okinawan was designated a national treasure[1] and Katsuren died in 1979.--Cckerberos (talk) 11:15, 26 August 2009 (UTC)[reply]

I'm surprised that only one name on this list has a link; I would assume that being considered a "Living National Treasure" would make unquestionably any individual notable by Wikipedia standards. (And I mention this because I'd like some idea of the works &/or performances they accomplished which led to this honor.) -- llywrch (talk) 14:34, 11 April 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Yes, unfortunately only a few (more than one) people have articles yet, while I agree with you that all are notable. I am not sure about your last sentence though. As far as I understand this honor, it is not for particular performances or works but rather for mastery of a skill, kind of a lifetime award. The idea behind it is that these individuals are important to preserve these artforms. The official title is therefore Preservers of Important Intangible Cultural Properties and their owners loose the title at death. It is definitely a prestiguous award: holders are allowed entrance (to some extent) to the Ise Grand Shrine, which is otherwise open only to members of the imperial family or members of parliament. Looking at the official Database of Japanese Cultural Properties, I did not find any information on individuals besides their names. There are likely not a whole lot of English language sources on most of them either. bamse (talk) 16:20, 11 April 2011 (UTC)[reply]
