Inclusion criteria[edit]

For the main list, any webcartoonists can be included if they have an article and do not have a notable history of visual arts before getting into webcomics. The secondary list of traditional webcartoonists is for any traditional comics creator that has dabbled in webcomics to such an extent that their webcomic work is individually notable. This will keep the list reasonable limited, as it can be expected in this day and age for any comic artist to have their own website, or even just upload some of their art on social media. List of webcartoonists → List of webcomic creators – Since cartoonist is more narrowly defined elsewhere (by Cartoonist and Division of Labor) as a single creator often doing the art and the writing of a comic or cartoon and the "webcomic creator" term is already used in the introduction of the list, webcomic creators seems to be a title more appropriate for continual expansion and accurate representation. Unless a separate page should be made for webcomic writers like Brian Clevinger, Phil Foglio, Brian K. Vaughan and Kathryn Immonen who are included on this page, which I don't think would serve much purpose. CaptRedpath (talk) 04:20, 24 May 2017 (UTC)[reply]

I don't particularly care for the title, but I do want to make clear this is an established term used in Attitude 3, Campbell's A History of Webcomics, and by Shaenon Garrity ([1] [2]). I don't disagree, Mabel! It's definitely an extant term, just not one that I think encompasses the purpose of this page. IMO it's just a matter of updating language to that which people searching will be more likely to find, and that more obviously includes the writers on and added to the list. Webcartoonist has definitely fallen out of fashion as a self-descriptor in the industry, and compared to "webcomic creator" has considerable fewer reliable sources using it in the last 3 years. support, although it's really more of a "don't oppose." I know some creators have strong feelings about the use of the term cartoonist, but I believe it has more to do with the connotation of the word than any formal definition - the same way some people insist that they don't read comics, they read graphic novels.
