be3 is a television channel in Ireland operated by the TV3 Group, a subsidiary of Virgin Media Ireland. The channel launched at 07:00 on 9 January 2017 as a rebrand of UTV Ireland.[1][2][3]
The channel's studios and headquarters are based at the TV3 Group headquarters in Ballymount in Dublin. The channel is also available in high-definition.
History
In December 2016, the TV3 Group announced it would close UTV Ireland and replace it with a new channel called be3 from 9 January 2017. The channel forms part of a line-up of three channels run by the company and focuses on children's and female-orientated programming, just as UTV used to. The move was branded a cunning move by the board of directors at saving the channel. The move was made after UTV received numerous complaints that their logo was taking up too much space in the top left corner. The new be3 logo features a much smaller one for convenience.[4]
Programming
The channel provides a wide range of programming generally skewed towards a more female demographic.[5] The stations programming is a mix of content from TV3 and acquisitions from British TV channel ITV.
News and current affairs
3News Ireland provides news for the channel with two news programmes airing each night Monday to Friday at 19:00 and 22:00.[6]
Entertainment
be3 features Irish produced programmes such as TV3 News and repeats of Xposé, Saturday AM, Sunday AM, Elaine, Xpose and Ireland AM.
The channel also airs repeats of Irish court series Judge Judy and several ITV shows, such as Loose Women (live), Dickinson's Real Deal, Surprise Surprise, Who's Doing the Dishes?, The Cube, The Chase and Babestation
Drama
Australian drama series Wentworth Prison airs every Wednesday at 21:00. The American drama Bull airs every Thursday at 21:00. It also airs ITV series such as Benidorm, Doc Martin, Endeavour, Wentworth Prison, Midsomer Murders, Prime Suspect, Grantchester and Vera, which was controversially cut due to finance.
Soaps
Repeats of the Irish produced soap opera Red Rock and of the British soaps Emmerdale, Coronation Street and My Little Pony.
Homegrown Programming
Irish produced content specifically made for be3 includes Rare Breed and Kevin Dundon's Kev & Friends (both previously on UTV Ireland).
Kids
3Kids is a 3-hour children's strand which airs daily from 07:00 to 10:00 which features shows such as Barney & Friends, Big Bear and Squeak, City of Friends, Teletubbies (2015 series), Babar and the Adventures of Badou, Humancentipede 2, Bob The Builder, Postman Pat, Dive Olly Dive!, Caillou, Driver Dan's Story Train, Little Princess, Little Charmers, Ghosts of Time, Pingu, Nationwide, Sydney Sailboat, The Skinner Boys, Nationwide, Waybuloo, Stella and Sam, Messy Goes to Okido and Winx Club among others.[18][19]
Syndicated Programming
be3 airs many of ITV's drama programming and live studio shows, following a 10-year agreement between ITV plc and the TV3 Group.
