Donna Windsor-Dingle (née Windsor) is a fictional character that appeared in the ITV soap opera Emmerdale. She was originally played by Sophie Jeffery, and later replaced by Verity Rushworth in 1998. Donna was the third longest running character on Emmerdale at the time of her departure. [1].She made her first appearance in the show on 10 August 1993. It was reported on 8 April 2008 that Verity Rushworth had quit, as she wanted to avoid being "typecast", after being in the soap for a decade.[2] Donna left the village on 30 January 2009. Donna's voice was heard on Marlon's answering machine on 2 February 2009.

Character Creation and Development

1993-1997

In 1993 as part of the new Windsor family, Donna Windsor was introduced in 1993, by series producer Nicholas Prosser who cast Sophie Jeffery in the role.

Donna was the only daughter of Viv and Vic Windsor. Donna was a little spoilt as a young child often getting her own way, but she was not as devious as her half sister Kelly or as wild as Scott.

When Donna first arrived with her family, originally from London. They wanted to move to the countryside and it wasn't a very pleasant experience for Donna. On December 31 1993, the Windsors visited the stables to see the horses and Donna wandered off. She had to be rescued from Kim Tate's blazing stables on the night of the plane crash.

In 1994, while being given a ride on tractor with Michael Feldmann, it toppled over and she was injured. Her mum, Viv, threatened to sue. Donna had a habit of going away for long periods of time with only being seen on screen from time to time when she first arrived.

In 1995, Terry Woods got into trouble with Alan Turner when she got drunk with her half siblings. Donna became distraught when the truth came out about her mother's affair with Terry Woods.

In 1996, she was accidentally shot in the head by Scott when Vic attempted to take the gun from him. The accident only left her with a scratch. Donna was later torn between her parents. She eventually moved into the Woolpack with her mother.

In 1997, when Kelly went missing, Donna was upset although she later helped Kelly meet Tom, whom Kelly later had an affair with. More trouble was later to come that year when Andy Sugden led Donna a little of the rails, who persuaded her to bunk off school and go joyriding in Leeds with him and Robert Sugden, which made Viv enemies with the Sugdens'.

1998-2004

Jeffery left the show in 1997 to continue with her school work. By 1998, now a teenager, and replaced by Verity Rushworth.

Donna was devastated when her dad died in the post office robbery, perpetrated by Andy's criminal dad Billy on Christmas Day.

In 1999, Donna was suspended from school for bullying Andy and his foster-brother Robert Sugden. Donna had teamed up with another girl, Chelsea, and they bullied the Sugden boys together. Chelsea was expelled and sent to a special needs school and Donna was warned if she was caught bullying again, she would go to a special needs school too.

In 2000, Viv caught Donna in bed with Marc Reynolds. Shortly afterwards, Marc dumped Donna because Viv told Angie about Marc sleeping with Donna. Later, Donna was upset that Marc and Eve were together.

Donna was also one of the teenagers involved in the hit and run accident that killed their head teacher, Miss Jean Strickland. Donna had to do community service as punishment for the hit and run, but was devastated when Marc was sent to prison.

In 2004, Viv discovered her daughter had contracted chlamydia, after sleeping with her boyfriend, Robert, which caused him distress as he had the condition too. He was also worried about it spreading as he was sleeping with his adoptive brother's girlfriend, Katie Sugden.

Storylines

Donna as she appeared in 1998.

Donna was horrified when her mother had an affair with family friend Terry Woods and left her dad - taking Donna with her. Her relief when they got back together was short-lived as Vic was killed when Billy Hopwood burgled the post office on Christmas Day 1998.

However, things improved on the home front for Donna when her mum married happy-go-lucky Bob Hope. While she had reservations about him, Bob and Donna soon became very close and she saw him as a father figure. When Viv and Bob split up in 2003, Donna was absolutely devastated. In a desperate cry for help, she took an overdose and her actions shocked Bob and Viv into sorting out their problems.

In 2001, Donna started a relationship with Marc Reynolds, to whom she lost her virginity. Their romance ended when Marc was sentenced to a year in a young offenders institute after the hit and run accident that killed Miss Jean Strickland. Donna was also involved as she was a passenger in the car.

Donna started dating village bad boy Robert Sugden. It was just a casual fling as far he was concerned but Donna thought they were serious - until he dumped her for Elaine Marsden. When Elaine left town, Donna and Robert got back together but he was busy pursuing Katie - one of Donna’s best friends - behind her back.

When, a few months after Katie’s wedding to Andy, the affair was revealed, Donna felt deeply betrayed and ended her friendship with Katie. [3].

Relationship with Marlon Dingle

Donna became attracted to widower Marlon Dingle but he wasn't interested and she became involved with Danny Daggert instead. The relationship didn’t last long and ended when Donna started getting close to Marlon.

Having finally got over the death of his wife Tricia, Marlon was ready to date again and found himself falling in love with Donna. After nearly a year together, Marlon proposed. Donna was bowled over. They excitedly started planning their wedding – although the happiness was stifled by Donna’s mum, Viv, who insisted they have a double wedding with her and Bob.

Meanwhile, Donna struck up a close friendship with Max King, whom she liked flirting with. When Max was killed in a car crash, Donna was devastated and Marlon tried to help her through her grief. She kept a recording of Max's voice on her phone which she regularly listened to. They continued planning the wedding, even though it was clear Donna was having second thoughts.

On the morning of their big day, Donna confessed she had feelings for Max. After much soul searching, Marlon decided to forgive Donna and they married anyway. They returned from honeymoon to live at Marlon’s with Paddy and Toni and enjoyed being happy newlyweds.

Married Life

Called up before the Dingle Court after stopping Shadrach stealing from her mum's shop, Donna defied Zak and Lisa and revealed she planned to become a police officer. Marlon backed her up.

Desperate to get their foot on the property ladder, the duo entered a competition to win the show home on the King’s River development. They were delighted to win but horrified to discover they needed a £10,000 deposit to clinch the prize! Viv, however, had an idea. She and Bob were desperate to have a baby so Viv asked Donna to be surrogate and she would give them the deposit.

Although horrified at first, the couple started coming round to the idea, knowing it could be the only way to get their own home. Donna agreed and eventually convinced Marlon. However, Marlon and Donna's house exploded on the day of the grand opening because of a gas leak, leading to the deaths of three people and the discovery of a fourth. Now homeless and discovering Viv was pregnant, Donna returned her money, which she got from Tom King.

Lilith's children

In December 2006, Donna and Marlon were left looking after Marlon's cousin Lillith's four children Luke, Matthew, Mark and Jon, following her arrest for armed robbery. This didn't work out and Marlon decided the children should live with their uncle because his and Donna's living arrangements were inadequate. Donna was devastated and the children were miserable with their uncle and eventually ran away. Marlon could see they were unhappy but Social Services insisted the children return to their uncle so he, Donna and the children went on the run. Unfortunately they were soon caught. Donna and Marlon were arrested and the children were placed in foster homes while Donna and Marlon made a formal application for custody of the children.

Donna and Marlon arrived for their meeting with Social Services and glowed with pride as Mrs Jenkins said they had a very positive report. Unfortunately Marlon let slip that the pub's back room had been damaged by fire. Mrs Jenkins looked into it before breaking the bad news: they wouldn't get custody until they had more suitable accommodation.

Shane Doyle

Shane Doyle, Donna's partner on the force, gave her grief over her gender as well as her in-laws and their crimes. Everyone Donna talked to, including Marlon, thought Shane was great, leading Donna to doubt her instincts.

During a party at the Woolpack, Donna decided to make a fresh start with Shane. He misunderstood what she wanted, thinking she fancied him and kissed her. When he began to force himself on her, Donna kneed him in the groin and fled to Ross Kirk's home (Ross witnessed the assault). Donna planned to file a complaint but Shane guessed and before she did, he told Chief of Police Charles Vaughan Donna had made a pass at him and was going through some crisis. Vaughan told Donna to wait before making any decisions as this could seriously harm her career. Unfortunately Ross didn't back Donna up, meaning it was her word against Shane's.

Marlon was so angry, he persuaded his brother Eli to set Shane up as a bent copper. Eli gave Ross drugs to put in Shane's locker and then Eli would phone the station and report it. When Donna found out, she was horrified and rushed to the station to get the drugs. Shane caught her trying to break into his locker. She told him about the drugs and he thought she was bluffing until he found them there. Since then, he has steered clear of the Dingles, following Donna's warning.

Car Crash

In 2008, Viv was arrested for fraud. However she was framed by Freddie Yorke. Wanting to prove her mother innocent, she convinced Ross to help her track him down. The day before Viv's trial, Donna and Ross staked out Freddie's home. Freddie appeared but got away in his car and Donna chased him. Donna lost control of the car and crashed. Ross saved her and they were rushed to hospital. She had to have her spine operated on and her spleen removed as it had ruptured on impact. Donna woke up the next day and her family were thrilled that she could feel and move her legs as the medical staff had had concerns that she wouldn't walk again. Due to the damage to her spine, she stayed in hospital for several weeks.

However, Viv pleaded guilty and was sentenced to 3 years, leaving Donna devastated. While in hospital, she decided to resign from the police but Ross persuaded her not to. She is now back at work.

Affair

Donna tried hard to resist when Ross told her he loved her. Following a police comedy night, at which Marlon and Chas were thrown out, Donna and Ross slept together. Shane became suspicious after seeing a colleague who had been looking for Ross. He knocked on Donna's door, claiming to be room service, and his suspicions were confirmed when he heard Ross in Donna's room.

Since then, Marlon and Donna went on holiday. On their return, they announced their intention to have children, much to Ross's disappointment. He convinced her to put that on hold while they attended a community policing course in London. He also tried convincing her that she made a mistake marrying Marlon so young and having his baby would just make matters worse.

When Donna went to the community policing course, she and Ross continued their affair. When they came back, Donna told Ross that she was going to leave Marlon so they could be together. Shane found out and when Paddy caught them kissing, he punched Ross and told Donna not to ruin her marriage. They ended things and Ross got a transfer and left the village but had to return when Shane's body was found.

Shane's murder

On New Year's Day 2009, Donna told Marlon about the affair because she feared he would find out from Shane's murder investigation. Angry and heartbroken, Marlon told the police that Shane was blackmailing Ross and Donna and implicated Ross in Shane's murder. Donna and Marlon separated briefly but got back together on the condition that Donna never sees Ross again. Since then, she has visited him in prison and he has told her of his suspicions that Jasmine, Debbie and Eli were up to something as they were acting suspiciously the night Shane went missing.

Departure

On April 8 2008, it was reported that Emmerdale actors are heading for the exit after new boss Anita Turner took over. The report also stated that Verity Rushworth, who plays Donna Windsor-Dingle had told show bosses she wants a break after more than ten years on the soap, along with Jenna-Louise Coleman is also reported to be eager to leave her role as Jasmine Thomas. An insider told The Sun: "Both stars are contracted until December but they've warned bosses they don’t see themselves staying. Their final scenes will air early next year." A spokesperson for Emmerdale responded: "Verity and Jenna both expressed an interest last year in taking a break. Nothing will be confirmed until we begin contract negotiations for 2009."..[4].

Both actresses told former series producer Kathleen Beedles separately last year that they would like to take a break from the soap. ."..[5]. It was reported on April 20 that Emmerdale producers were hoping to dissuade Verity Rushworth from taking an extended break from the show. An official statement from the soap earlier this month confirmed that the actress, who plays Donna Windsor-Dingle, may decide to take time off when her contract expires. "Verity has been playing Donna for more than ten years so she's thinking about taking an extended break," an insider told the Daily Star Sunday. "It's only something that she's thinking about. No decision has been made yet." She's got some really exciting stuff coming and her contract doesn't run out until the end of the year, so there's still time to persuade her to stay. She'd be a huge loss.."..[6].

On 25 September 2008, according to a Soap joiners, movers and leavers table at Digital Spy it stated Verity Rushworth is to leave in early 2009.

Transfer to Essex

Since the break up of their marriage, Donna tried to get close to Marlon but he could not face her, despite the news that Ross had left town. Marlon returned to the Woolpack and could not help feeling down, when he learned that Donna was there to see Ross off.

When she arrived at the police station, Donna tried to hand in her transfer papers but the sergeant saw how distressed she was and advised her to give Marlon one more chance to take her back. Katie offered her the same advice but Donna refused to buckle. Fearing she’s losing Donna, Katie roped in Bob, who began to make some progress.

Back at the Woolpack, Marlon grew more uncomfortable at mentions of Ross’s tearful goodbye. Chas went to set the record straight and told Marlon that nothing had happened between Ross and Donna when he left. Both wallowing in self pity, Marlon and Chas drunkenly shared a kiss. Donna arrived to give Marlon one last chance to forgive her but she witnessed the misplaced kiss. Laughing in spite of herself, Donna announced that she was going to Essex. Marlon was unrepentant, sure their marriage was over, and Donna finally knew she had to move on. Donna’s left the village in a taxi on January 30 leaving a tearful Marlon behind.
