Honorary title granted to the wife of the president of the United States. The present First Lady is Laura Welch Bush. Some of the more famous first ladies in history were Dolly Madison, Martha Washington, and Eleanor Roosevelt.

The first lady has no official governmental duties as she is not elected to any public office. Unofficially, she attends many ceremonies and functions of state with the president.

When a woman is elected president, it remains to be seen what the function of her husband will be.
