Samuel Beckett (1906-1989) was an absurdist Irish playwright, poet and novelist. He is most famous for the play Waiting for Godot, which opened to rave reviews and has remained very popular, as well as for Endgame. Beckett's theatre is stark, fundamentally minimalist, and deeply pessimistic about human nature and the human situation. He was awarded the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1969.
