Tomas Jurco (born 28 December in Kosice,Slovakia) is a Major Junior Ice Hockey right winger currntly playing for the Saint John Sea Dogs of the QMJHL. Jurco is 6'02" and weighs 193lbs. He was drafted 4th overall by the Sea Dogs in the 2009 CHL Import Draft and is currently ranked 24th among all North Amarican Skaters for the 2011 NHL Entry Draft. Jurco had an impressive first season with the Sea Dogs in the 2009-10 season earning 26 goals and 25 assists (56 points) in 64 games played. He also added 7 goals and 10 assists (17 points) in 21 playoff games played. Jurco started the 2010-11 campaign strong earning 15 points in the first 6 games en route to having Saint John be ranked the top team in the CHL for a streak of over 7 weeks in a row which is still an active streak tying the teams previous record of 7 weeks. Around the middle of his first season with Saint John, Jurco became a YouTube sensation by having 2 videos of him posted. The first video is a compilation of various puck handling tricks on a driveway with a net. The second video is a shootout goal against the Cape Brenton Screaming Eagles where he skates to the front of the net coming in from an angle, leaves the puck on one side of the net, does a complete 360 degree turn bringing his body back into play and putting the puck in the back of the net. Jurco is well known for his ability to do many different puck tricks. These tricks have earned him segmants on television shows such as Sportcentre and NHL on the Fly. He was announced to the Team Cherry roster for the 2011 Home Herdware CHL/NHL top prospects game where he also competed in the skills competition. He proved himself in the breakaway challenge trying some fancy moves that got the crowd pumped up, but the final shot topped them all when he skated past his teammates on an angle, picked the puck up on his stick a mere 6 feet away from the net, spun around and fired the puck in mid-air past the helpless Team Orr goaltender. All of the tricks he's done have been getting him noticed by scouts all over the NHL. Jurco was named to the Slovakian 23-man squad which competed at the 2011 IIHF World U-20 Championships in Buffalo. Jurco is expected to be a returning member for the Slovakian squad at the 2012 IIHF World U-20 Championships in Alberta. |
