"Rabiosa"
Song

"Rabiosa" (English: "Rabid") is a song by Colombian singer-songwriter Shakira featuring rappers Pitbull and El Cata. It will be released as the third single from her third bilingual and seventh studio album, entitled Sale el Sol. Two versions of the song were recorded, one in English, that features vocals from rapper Pitbull, and one in Spanish that features vocals from El Cata. "Rabiosa" entered the top ten of the Spanish Singles Chart and charted within French Singles Chart and the Bubbling Under Hot 100 Singles, and received positive reviews from American critics such as Billboard. The music video for the song was shot in late April in Barcelona, Spain.

Composition

"Rabiosa" was originally written and performed by El Cata on his first album "El Malo",[2] as with the other track "Loca".

Musically, "Rabiosa" is a Merenrap/Dancehall reggae song with Latin and rap influences.[3] The song was recorded in the summer of 2010 in the Dominican Republic, alongside rappers Pitbull and El Cata.[4] The trio has also wrote and produced it, along with Dizzee Rascal.

There are two different versions (such as in the case of Loca & Waka Waka (This Time for Africa)). The original English language version features fellow rapper Pitbull and includes some Spanish lines, while the Spanish version features El Cata and serves as a single in Spain, South America, Mexico and France.[5] The lyrics are both sung and spoken in English as well as in Spanish, concluding a song with Code-switching, where a phrase can include words and expressions in both Spanish and English (for example "Bite me en la boca").[6]

Critical reception

The song received favorable reviews. Jennifer Schaffer from Standford Daily prises the song within the album Sale el sol stating that "One of the best tracks on the album is “Rabiosa,” featuring Pitbull’s familiar interjections. It’s exactly the kind of undeniably sexy song you’d expect from a Shakira/Pitbull collaboration, a smart and seductive dance mix that won’t let your hips sit still. Pitbull’s raspy raps mesh well with Shakira’s sultry moans and invitations to “come get a little closer.”"[7]

Michelle Morgante from Boston said, positively, that: "Shakira has created a new merengue-rock hybrid that lays down bare horn riffs over a driving beat in a groove that is irresistible. (in songs such as Rabiosa)[8]

Allison Stewart from The Washington Post observed that "The Pitbull-assisted "Rabiosa" is giddy, rapid-fire Latin pop."[9]

The website Musicreviews.com praised the song: "... The song already from first listen is very catchy, it's one of those whose chorus goes in the head and it’s hard to forget, and many are already thinking that this new music could become one of the summer hits of 2011. However, it would not be a surprise, considering that every summer Shakira ignites the charts all over the world.[10]

Spencer Kaufman of Pop Crush mentioned that "Rabiosa" might become a summer hit because of its distinctive Latin flavor, despite it is not a pop masterpiece like "Hips Don't Lie": "...The tune has a distinctive Latin flavor that’s sprinkled with spices of Dominican merengue music. The fast-paced track features a sizzling horn section and a steady dance beat throughout. Lyrically, Shakira and Pitbull trade flirtatious lines as they sing about each other’s sex appeal, mixing in some Spanish words into the English verses: “Oye papi, if you like it mocha / Come down a little closer and bite me en la boca.” While ‘Rabiosa’ might not have the mass appeal of a pop song like “Hips Don’t Lie’ or a rock track like ‘Whenever, Wherever,’ it should find a nice following in nightclubs and on beach blankets this summer." He gave the song seven points out of ten.[11]

Within Sale el Sol, "Rabiosa" is considered one of the best songs by Billboard.[12]

Chart performance

Due to digital downloads, the song debuted at number 25 in the Bubbling Under Hot 100 Singles (equivalent of #125 in the Billboard Hot 100) in the United States, prior to the album's release.[13] Thus made Rabiosa become Shakira's fifteenth song to enter the Hot 100 (including the Bubbling under extension) in the history.[14] The next week it fell off the chart, losing over 10,000 sales. After half a year, "Rabiosa" re-enter two Billboard surveys: Hot Latin Tracks[15] and Latin Pop Airplay, where it peaked within the top forty.[16]

After a month of airing on the radios all over the country, the Spanish version of "Rabiosa" (featuring El Cata) reached number 57 in the French Airplay Chart, out of 250 positions.[17] The following week, the song debuted at number 94 in the French Singles Chart, because of the strong digital selling in the week ending March 27. The same week it rose to number 51 in the Airplay Chart. In the French Singles Chart, "Rabiosa" peaked, so far, at number twenty in its second full month in the survey.[18] In the Ultratip Chart from Wallonia, Belgium, the song debuted inside the top 50, at number 47 and reached the top twenty, as it peaked at number-twenty. It then entered the top fifty of the Ultratop Wallonia official chart.[19]

In Spain, the song debuted at number twenty-three inside the Spanish Singles Chart, becoming that week's second best debut, after Lady Gaga's "Judas".[20] The next week, "Rabiosa" climbed to number-six, being the greatest gainer. It then moved further to number-five to reach the top three the next week and finally set its peak to date at number-two.[21] In Portugal the song peaked within the top forty of the Airplay Chart. In the Italian Singles Chart, the song debuted at number twenty-nine.[22] In Switzerland it became an airplay hit and debuted at number twenty-eight ands then moved to number twenty-six within the Swiss Singles Chart.[19] In Sweden, the song debuted at number forty-eight.[19] In Germany it is reported to have debuted at number forty-four within the Media AG charts, though this fact wasn't confirmed thus far. "Rabiosa" have also entered the charts in Argentina, Colombia, Chile and Mexico and received airplay in Austria, Bulgaria, Greece, Hungary, Poland, Romania, Russia, Ukraine and Turkey.[23]

Music video

The music video for "Rabiosa" was shot from April 26 to April 28, 2011 in Barcelona, Spain. The video features Pitbull and El Cata, as well as actor and journalist David Moreno.[24] The director of the video is Jaume de Laiguana, whom also directed Shakira's previous videos for "Gypsy", "Loca" and "Sale el sol" and many others.[25] The video was described as having a "partying atmosphere" by those who took part in the shootings.

A 30-second teaser of the video was released via Shakira's official website on May 18, 2011.[26] As seen in the teaser, the music video will feature a house party including a tub scene.[27] In this video, Shakira wears a brunette French bob wig.[28]
