Bhood is well connected by road with adjacent villages and cities in Maharashtra as well. Template:Infobox Indian jurisdiction Bhood (Marathi: भूड) is a village in Khanapur tehsil of the Sangli district in Maharashtra, India.[1] It is located near the city Vita.[2][3] It is famous for Lord Bhoodsiddhnath Temple. Population of Bhood is 1,889 according to the 2011 Census.[4] Agriculture is the prime occupation of the residents of the village. Some residents are also employed in Gold Refinery[which?] and Jewellery business. Bhood is recipient of Nirmal Gram Purskar in Sant Gadage Baba Gram Swachata Abhiyan.[5]

Etymology

Bhood is well known for Lord Bhoodsidhhnatha. The village's name has come from the name of the Lord itself.

History

Bhood was under the administration of Aundh State during the British Raj. Aundh State was a princely state in British India, in the Deccan States Agency division of the Bombay Presidency. After Indian independence, Bhood came under the administration of South Satara district. After creation of Sangli district, Bhood has become the part of Sangli District.

The village has a semi arid, hot and dry climate consisting of mainly three seasons. Summers are long, ranging almost five months from mid February to June. Temperatures in summer fall between 35 °C (95 °F) - 40 °C (104 °F). However, it may reach higher than 40 °C in searching summer. May is the hottest month of a year with an average day temperature of 37 °C (98.6 °F) in the village. Winters are short with temperatures ranging within 15 °C (59 °F) - 21 °C (69.8 °F). December is the coldest month in a year. Relative humidity in winter is the lowest and December is the driest month in a year with the relative humidity as low as 30%. Rains are scarce and occur only during the Monsoon from mid June to September. Annual average rainfall is about 25.5 inches (647.7 mm). September gets the maximum rainfall in a year while July has the maximum rainy days.

Location of Bhood

Bhood is located in south-western Maharashtra at 17°20′11″N 74°41′3″E / 17.33639°N 74.68417°E / 17.33639; 74.68417 in Khanapur (Vita) tehsil of the Sangli district.

Economy

Agriculture

Most people of Bhood are farmers. Main crops in farms are wheat, jowar, bajra, groundnut etc. Some grape farms are also present in Bhood. Main resource of water for farming is rainwater and groundwater. Some farmers grow export quality grapes. Some of them also use drip irrigation method in their farms for water supply. 878 Hectares of land is under cultivation in the village of which 51 Hectares is irrigated. Forest land is about 297 Hectares.

Gold Refinery and Jewelers

Although the main profession of people is farming, many are involved in gold refining and jewellery.

Media and Communication

Marathi language newspapers such as Pudhari, Sakaal, Lokmat are available in the village. Bhood enjoys broadcasting of FM Radio services like Radio Tomato, Radio Mirchi, All India Radio. Cable service for television is available but know days popularity of DTH is widely increasing. Regional Marathi television channels are more popular.

The Grampanchayat Bhood is the administrative body for the village which is directly responsible for the affairs within the village. The village has been divided into 3 Wards, each ward has its 3 elected representatives called 'Gramsadasy' or 'punch'. The gramsadasy elect the 'Sirpunch' of the Grampanchayat which is head of the Grampanchayat. The Grampanchayat elections are held after every five years. The Grampanchayat Bhood is working with Zilla parishad, Sangli and Panchayat samiti, Vita. Bhood is under the Lengare division for Zilla parishad, Sangli and Panchayat samiti, Vita.

Bhood is connected by road to the nearest village Lengare located at a distance of (5 km) by the Bhood-Lengare road which furthur connects to the Vita city. Railway

Nearest railway station is Karad (55 km). Miraj railway junction is 65 km from Bhood. Regular railways to all major cities in India are available from Karad and Miraj railway stations.

Air

Nearest airport from Bhood is Kolhapur (90 km.). Kolhapur has a domestic airport at Ujalaiwadi, 9 km South-east from the Kolhapur city. Its sole regular service to Mumbai by Kingfisher Airlines ceased in November 2011 when the airline pulled out of several towns like Kolhapur due to its financial crisis.[7] Also Pune 175 km is well connected by road from Bhood. Pune airport have regular service to all major cities in India.

Bhood had a population of 1889. Male population is 898 and females constitute 991. There are 1104 females per thousand males in the village. The residents of Bhood celebrate the festivals of Dussehra, Diwali, Ganesh Chaturthi, Krishna Janmashtami, Gudi Padwa, Nag Panchami, Maha Shivaratri, Bailpola, Navratri, Makar Sankranti and more.

Chaitra Ashtami

Annual festival of Lord Bhoodsidhhanatha is held on Chaitra Krishna Ashtami known as Chaitra Ashtami. Chaitra Ashtami is a three day celebration of the Lord's wedding ceremony. On the first day bullock cart race is organised near the temple. Second day is the most important day and on this day Sasankathi(Holy long wooden or metallic bar) and Diva(Holy lamp) are the main attractions. On the third day Kusumba(Type of Bhang) is serveed as Prasadam to the Lord.

Education

Schools

  • Zila Parishad School provides primary education from class 1 to class 7. The school is governed by the Zilla parishad of Sangli with the help of the local Panchayat samiti of Vita and the Gram panchayat of Bhood. The school is located near S.T. Stand of Bhood and is equipped with educational facilities.
  • New English School provides secondary education from class 8 up to class 10 (matriculation level). The school is affiliated to the S.S.C. Board. It is situated near the Bhood-Khanapur road.

Sports

Like wise the rest of India, cricket is the most popular game in the village. People are also involved in other games like vollyball, Kho-Kho and Kabaddi. Bullock cart race is organized during the annual festival of Lord Bhoodsidhhanath. Bailpola is also a popular sport in the village.
