Kai Po Che! is an upcoming film based on Chetan Bhagat's novel The 3 Mistakes of My Life directed by Abhishek Kapoor,[2] with music by Amit Trivedi and lyrics by Swanand Kirkire. Sushant Singh Rajput, Raj Kumar Yadav and Amit Sadh star as Ishaan, Govind and Omi respectively.[3][4] Kai Po Che!'s trailer was released with Dabangg 2.[5] The first trailer of this movie was released on 20 December 2012.[6]

The film portrays the journey of three friends as they discover cricket, religion and business in their respective fields. Set against the backdrop of religious politics, the story underlines the three mistakes made by Govind. The film as well as the book is set in Gujarat, so the title Kai Po Che.[7][8] The shooting started mid-April in Vadnagar, Ahmedabad.Kai Po Che is releasing world wide on February 22, 2013.[1]

Plot

Best friends Ishaan, Omi and Govind – young, ambitious and restless – are trying to make a mark in the India of the early 2000s. These are exciting times – a new millennium has just dawned, India's a nuclear power and ostensibly shining – a perfect place for the 3 Ahmedabad boys to start a business that could be their ticket to fame and riches. In a country where cricket is religion, they hit upon a brilliant plan – to start a training academy that could produce India's next sporting superstars! What follows is without doubt the greatest adventure of their lives, as they attempt to navigate the big hurdles in the path of fulfilling their dreams. Based on Chetan Bhagat's bestselling novel "The 3 Mistakes of My Life", Kai Po Che (meaning a triumphant yell in Gujarati) is an unforgettable ode to friendship and the magical moments one shares with one's closest pals – celebrating festivals, drunken dancing, watching cricket matches together, strategizing on how to catch the attention of the cute neighborhood girl, being there to watch each other's back in troubled times and to celebrate one's successes by screaming "Kai Po Che"!

Cast

Director Abhishek Kapoor has admitted that the leading Bollywood stars didn't want to be a part of the film.[9][10] Former cricketer Ajay Jadeja has been roped in for a special appearance in this film.[11]

He is the quintessential leader. Popular through his growing years as 'Mr Most Likely To Succeed', he dons an outward alpha-male avatar that acts as a balance for his insecurity as a sporting 'has-been'. He is a pure soul and his understanding of life is straightforward with generous dollops of naivety. Sushant brings Ishaan to life like his own.

His character goes through flows and ebbs beyond his comprehension. He has a loyalty that defines a leader, with no personal aspirations of a similar nature. The confidence may not be in place to project himself outwardly, but that only stems from a lack of aspiration to do so. Circumstances beyond his control push him to the edge and bring him back in due time. His is a journey of redemption and he strikes a fine balance between venturing beyond and coming into his own.

His character provides balance and is the voice of reason and stability. His is a world of facts, numbers, pragmatism, rationalism and reality. He stands tall in his shoes, and his voice projects well over the din of everyday mundaneness. Love finds him in an imperfect world, and brings him closer to himself. We live in an era inspired by Steve Jobs, where all good things come in small packages.

Production

Filming

Filming began in Vadnagar in Mehsana district of Gujarat along majority of scenes canned in old Ahmedabad and continued further in Porbandar, Sabarmati, Diu.[12][13] A scene featuring the trio was shot at Hatkeshwar Mahadev temple.[14] Reportedly, Sushant Singh Rajput had to undergo four months cricket training under two coaches to fit into the book adapted character of 'Ishaan'.[15] A cricket match sequence was shot at a Sabarmati stadium in Gujarat.[16]

Title

Chetan Bhagat, whose book is adapted for the screen, first revealed the title of the film. Subsequently, a short contest was announced by him on Twitter to create the awareness about the film and its title.[17]

Marketing

The director has a four-city unusual promotional strategy in place. There are plans of bonding with friends in four cities and hanging out with them. The producers, UTV, are working on it currently.[18][19]

Release

Kai Po Che release date is confirmed as 22 February 2013.[1]

Accolades

Kai Po Che" will have a world premiere at the 63rd Berlin International Film Festival in February 2013.[20][21][22][23]
