Boxxy is a character performed by American internet celebrity, Catherine "Catie" Wayne, known for her highly energetic vlogs.[1] Her rise in popularity began in late 2008 and early 2009.

Her videos, under the YouTube account boxxybabee were initially made to be posted to her Gaia Online friends.

History

In January 2008, Wayne recorded two videos addressing her friends on Gaia Online and uploaded them to YouTube under the alias boxxybabe. They were reposted to the site i-am-bored.com later in the year, and then eventually appeared on 4chan. Wayne responded to the popularity of her initial videos in a third video that was uploaded to her new YouTube channel, boxxybabee, in January 2009.

The videos depict Wayne in heavy eyeliner[2][3][4] rambling excitedly about various things while displaying "ridiculous" and possibly "fake" odd personality quirks.[1][5]

The presence of the videos created a dispute on 4chan, leading to various flame wars and hacking incidents among factions that claimed to either support or oppose Boxxy.[2][6] This led to a denial of service attack on 4chan itself, shutting the site down for several hours.[1] Participants went elsewhere, launching a "Twitter bomb" that May.[7] On YouTube, the popular Boxxy channel was hacked and the source's identity outed.[8] A number of spoofs, parody videos, and remixes were posted throughout the web.[1][6][8]

In 2010, Urlesque named Boxxy number 104 on its list of "The 100 Most Iconic Internet Videos".[9] In late 2010, Wayne began selling Boxxy items on eBay.[3]

On November 25, 2010, Wayne uploaded an edited clip from the film Star Wars Episode IV: A New Hope under the alias ANewHopeee. The original clip contained Princess Leia Organa's holographic message to Obi-Wan Kenobi. Wayne replaced Princess Leia's speech with her own request for her fans' help in regaining access to her old account, boxxybabee.

On January 10, 2011, she posted a new, more introspective video[10] onto a new YouTube account (ANewHopeee)[11] in-which she tells that Boxxy is a made-up character and that she acts. This video caused some discussions on its authenticity.[3][5] On January 19, 2011, Boxxy was mentioned in a local Fox 11 report on Internet trolls.[12]

On June 17, 2011, Wayne made a third YouTube account (Bodaciousboxxy)[13] and continued uploading videos of herself.[14] In this video she claims that the Boxxy in the video of January 2011 is not the real Boxxy, but a girl who looks a lot like her, who was supposedly hacked by a character named "Svetlana".

On July 21, 2011, Wayne made a new video called "Calm Down, Holden." on the ANewHopeee channel stating that Boxxy and Svetlana are just characters created by her and thanking her fans for all their support.

After a hiatus of almost six months, Wayne returned on October 25, 2012 with a new video titled, "FOAR GURLS FRUM BOXXY". In this video, she is cosplaying as Hatsune Miku for Halloween.

On February 14, 2013, Wayne posted a new video titled, "FOAR BOIS FRUM BOXXY". On this video she is talking about Valentine´s Day.

One month later, on March 22, 2013, Wayne uploaded a new video titled "FOAR EVERYPONY FRUM BOXXY". This video features her talking about the animated television series My Little Pony.[15]

She currently publishes videos to YouTube under the aliases boxxybabee and ANewHopeee. She has previously published videos using two other accounts S4TISFACTION and bodaciousboxxy which are now inactive.

Catherine Wayne, as "Boxxy" is the cover girl and subject of a feature article in "ArtsNFashion Magazine" (Vol 2, Issue 3, Winter 2012) titled, "Boxxy - the power of a smile". [16]
