Template:Infobox reality music competition The X Factor is a British television music competition to find new singing talent. The tenth series will air on ITV in 2013. Dermot O'Leary will return to present the main show on ITV and Caroline Flack will return to present spin-off show The Xtra Factor on ITV2, while Olly Murs, who co-presented with Flack for the previous two series, will not return. Louis Walsh will return for his tenth series on the judging panel, while nothing is yet confirmed regarding, Gary Barlow, Tulisa Contostavlos and Nicole Scherzinger, the other three judges from series 9.

Judges and presenters

On 20 April 2012, it was announced that Louis Walsh would be returning for his tenth series on the judging panel.[1] Walsh is the only judge who has so far been confirmed to be returning to the show, while nothing is yet confirmed regarding the other three judges from series 9Gary Barlow, Tulisa Contostavlos and Nicole Scherzinger. Contostavlos has reportedly been fired from the show,[2] but she denies this.[3] Sharon Osbourne, who was a judge on the show from series 1 to 4, is reported as a possibility to return.[4]

Dermot O'Leary will return to present the main show on ITV,[5] whilst Caroline Flack will return to present spin-off show The Xtra Factor on ITV2.[6] Olly Murs, Flack's co-presenter for series 8 and 9, will not return to series 10 so he can focus on his own music career.[7] Several people reported to be possibly replacing Murs include Nick Grimshaw, Dave Berry and Rylan Clark.[8]

Selection process

Between 25 March and 1 April 2013, mobile auditions took place in Inverness, Great Yarmouth, Warrington, Aberdeen, Colchester, Hull, Dumfries, Grimsby, Romford, Belfast, the Isle of Wight, Sunderland, Wakefield, Bangor, Middlesbrough, Yeovil, Aberystwyth, Blackburn, Dublin, Blackpool, Cork, Merthyr Tydfil and Newport.[9] It was reported that around 20 people attended Colchester auditions on 26 March and producers tried to convince passers-by to audition. A spokesperson for the show commented: "The X Factor mobile auditions are taking place across the UK this week, allowing budding artists to try out in towns and cities where the auditions tour doesn't reach. The numbers attending vary from location to location and are on a par with last year when we found our winner James Arthur. Overall applications are strong for this series and are in line with last year. We've had strong turnouts at other locations for the mobile auditions with more than 250 people turning up at Hull and over 100 in Great Yarmouth."[10] Open auditions began in London (ExCeL London) on 6 April[11] and continued in Birmingham (ICC) on 13 April, Cardiff (Millennium Stadium) on 20 April, and Manchester (Old Trafford) on 27 April, before concluding in Glasgow (SECC) on 1 May.[12] Almost 8,000 auditionees attended in London,[11] whilst Cardiff attracted at least 3,000,[13] Brimingham produced around 5,000,[14] over 4,000 auditioned in Manchester[15] and over 2,000 in Glasgow.[16]

This series will see the return of "intimate" auditions last used in series 5, which Cowell hopes will increase ratings. Auditionees will perform in a room in front of the judges with no backing tracks, and those who are successful will then face a second audition in front of a live audience. If they are successful in the second, they will head through to bootcamp.[17] Judges auditions in Liverpool have been axed this year, after having been one of the locations for the past two series.[18] Producers were reportedly undermined with the talent in Liverpool, despite the city having producing three consecutive finalists—Rebecca Ferguson (series 7), Marcus Collins (series 8) and Christopher Maloney (series 9). Producers say they are "mixing it up", but it is claimed[by whom?] that they were unimpressed with local talent in the shape of Maloney.[18] Plymouth is reportedly being considered as a replacement.[18] Additionally, Birmingham, which was replaced by Newcastle upon Tyne in series 9 because producers thought that Birmingham provided "no memorable talent", is returning as an audition city after disappointing results in Newcastle.[19]
