Template:Contains Persian text Samarinda International Airport (Abbrev.: BSB) is the future main airport in Samarinda. It is in the village of Sungai Siring, which is one of five villages in Samarinda Utara subdistrict. It is colloquially known as Sungai Siring Airport (فرودگاه سیرینگ), to distinguish it from its predecessor, SRI Airport.
The airport has been officially constructed since 2005, will replace SRI Airport, and will be an important regional transportation centre, passenger hub and gateway for destinations in Nusantara (with over eight destinations) and cities in Kaltim. It will be the Kaltim's busiest cargo gateway and busiest passenger airport.[2]
Sungai Siring International Airport is home to Kaltim's largest passenger terminal buildings. It will be operated by PT Pengelola Bandara SB, 24 hours a day, and is the primary hub for Kaltim Airlines.[3] BSB is an important contributor to Samarinda's economy. About 6 airlines will operate flights from the airport to 15 cities across Indonesia. BSB will handle 5,000,000 passengers, surpassing Sultan Aji Muhamad Sulaiman Airport.
History
Sungai Siring Airport was designed as a replacement for the former Samarinda International Airport (commonly known as SRI Airport) originally built in 1973. In the densely built-up Pinang River District with a single runway extending into settlements, SRI had only limited room for expansion to cope with steadily increasing air traffic. By the 2000s, SRI had become one of Kaltim’s busiest airports — it far exceeded its annual passenger and cargo design capacities. One out of every 25 flights experienced delays, largely due to lack of space for aircraft, gates, and the runway.[4]
A 1992 planning study by Pemerintah Daerah Tingkat 1 Provinsi Kal-Tim identified the village of Sungai Siring, on Samarinda Utara, as a possible replacement site. Away from the congested city centre, flight paths would be routed over Samarinda Utara rather than populous urban areas, enabling efficient round-the-clock operation of multiple runways.[5]
The Sungai Siring (BSB) airport master plan was completed in 1998. The Airport Location Study by the Transportation Ministry came up with four recommended locations for overall strategic development in Samarinda. One of the four assumed a new airport at Kelurahan Makroman; a second assumed a new airport at Kecamatan Palaran; the third assumed a new airport at Kelurahan Sungai Siring; and the fourth assumed a new airport at Bayur.[6]
In November 2003 the governor of Kaltim announced that a decision had been made on the Airport Location Study. The decision was a replacement facility at Kelurahan Sungai Siring.[7] Construction of the new airport began in 2005.
The construction period was very slow; specialists considered only 2–3-year period was sufficient for this aviation project. There was the uncertain future of the airport construction after Panitia Pengadaan BSB manipulated the nomination of PT NCR as the contractor. It was originally believed that BPKP preferred to keep everything investigated and minimise financial commitments for that projects temporarily, therefore stopping all construction. In practice, the airport did not finish in time for the investigation. However, Kaltim gave an additional year's deadline.[8][9]
Construction of the new airport was only part of the Master Plan of MP3 EI, which also involved construction of new road and rail links. The detailed design for the airport terminal was awarded to a consortium led by Waskita Karya with Airmas Asri as specialist designers for airport related aspects. The project architects were PT Waskita Karya.
Composition
The airport has four boarding gates,[10] with four jet bridge gates. All the jet bridges are capable of handling the Airbus A320.
Passenger terminal building of the BSB, Terminal 1 is large with an area measuring 16,468 m2 (177,260 sq ft).[11]

The airport is operated by PT Pengelola Bandara SB, a statutory body established and wholly owned by the government of Dati I Provinsi Kalimantan Timur. The runway, which is 3000 metres in length and 60 metres wide, enables it to handle Airbus A320 200-sized aircraft. The runway has an ultimate capacity of over 27,400 aircraft movements a year. The parking bays of Sungai Siring Airport are capable of accommodating 12 aircraft.[12]
Air traffic
The airport provides search and rescue services, medical evacuation and general purpose flight for the government.
Passenger facilities
Very, Very Important Person Centre
The Very Very Important Person Centre (VVIP) is next to the terminal 1 and has its facilities separate from the public terminal. It provides a full range of services for executive aircraft and passengers.[6]
Cargo facilities
The airport operates one 600 m² air cargo terminal on site.[12]
Airport based ground services
The Air Traffic Control Complex (ATCX), next to the hangar, is the nerve centre of the air traffic control system. The Airport Meteorological Office (AMO) provides weather services for the aviation community. Rescue and fire fighting services are covered by PKP PK Bandar Udara Internasional Samarinda Baru.
Ground transport
The airport was built with ground-transportation considerations in mind, connected by the Samarinda Utara Road on Sungai Siring, linking to inner Samarinda.
Rail
The airport will be reached by Samarinda Rail, a dedicated rail link provided by Pemkot Samarinda.[13]
