Miles Davis Volume 1 is a compilation album with recordings by Miles Davis of 1952–1954 for the Blue Note Record label that were previously issued as singles and 10 inch LPs. Originally released in 1956 (followed by Volume 2) after Davis won the Down Beat readers poll as best trumpeter.[3][4] It contained takes of the 1952 (May 9) and 1953 (April 20) sessions for the lable.

For the CD release remastered by Rudy Van Gelder producer Michael Cuscuna had to compromise, so that the "RVG edition" Miles Davis Volume 1 of 2001 compiled the entire tracks recorded on May 9, 1952, and March 6, 1954, whereas the complete 1953 session is assorted on Miles Davis Volume 2. By appending the alternate takes to the otherwise chronologically ordered master takes of the initial 10 inch release Young Man with a Horn, he did not maintain the original order of the historic record.

The album was identified by Scott Yanow in his Allmusic essay "Hard Bop" in 2010 as one of the 17 Essential Hard Bop Recordings.[5]
