Private life
By the late 1960s, Allende had ventured into Spanish-language Soap Operas as well as Photo Soap Operas (magazine soap operas widely produced during the 1970s in many Latin American countries). His matinee idol looks helped Allende become a superstar and teen idol across Latin America almost immediately.
Allende was born in Mexico. His father is a Mexican, and his mother is from Cuba. Allende's grandfather on his father's side was Puerto Rican. Both grandparents on his mother side are Spaniards.
Allende started off in poor conditions. A soon-to-be-friend, Carlos Castillo, offered help to Allende. Castillo asked his own father for various items for Allende, such as shoes and food. One thing that Castillo asked Allende to do was to remember the Castillo family if Allende ever became famous, a favor that Allende did mention in a television interview.[citation needed]
During the early 1980s, Allende moved to Hollywood, and became a respectable success in the "movie capital of the world" landing major roles in important productions. During this time Allende met his current wife, María Mediavilla, from Puerto Rico. The new couple moved to Aspen, Colorado, and lived there for 15 years. They have two sons, Elán and Adán.
Career
During the 1981–1982 television season, Allende had a recurring role on the NBC prime time soap opera Flamingo Road as "Julio Sánchez". Furthermore, Allende became the host of the Spanish version of the television singing contest Star Search (Buscando Estrellas).
His wife had been a world traveller during her single years and Allende had become a regular vacationer at European spots. His two boys consider Venice, Italy, and Mykonos, Greece, their favorite vacation spots, but Allende and his wife mostly prefer London, where the latter had lived for many years while pursuing a graduate degree.
Fernando and his wife forged a friendship with Prince Michael of Kent, seventh in line for the British throne. Queen Elizabeth II became interested in their friendship and had the British secret service conduct a major investigation into the Allende family.[citation needed] Nothing significant came out of the investigation and eventually the Queen approved of their friendship. They were guests of honor at the 100th Anniversary Celebration of the Victoria and Albert Museum held in London. They were also invited to travel with the Kents to the Gala Opening in the Houston Museum of Art where the collection of the V & A started its world tour.
In 2001, Fernando and his wife moved to Puerto Rico, where Fernando has successfully returned to his career as an actor and singer, and initiated a new career in painting. Furthermore, he has directed and produced his own movies and mini series. He has also been one of the steady judges of the popular Puerto Rican talent/reality show, Objetivo Fama, and presently hosts his own television variety show called: Entre Amigos (Among Friends). He owns El Dorado Studios, a TV and motion picture facility in Dorado, Puerto Rico.
In December 2007, he was the host for Miss World 2007 in Sanya, China, alongside Angela Chow.He presently is working on a multicultural theme sitcom made in Puerto Rico called "Qué familia más normal" on TuTv, with actors from Mexico and Puerto Rico.
